One key is to try and put your own little spin on the project. Make it a little different to set it apart from the pack. Rarely does a project come along that hasn't been made in some shape, form, or fashion by several other people. Also, it seems more and more people are preferring handmade items instead of manufactured IKEA like things which mean the demand will only grow, just my opinion.
