About Us.
I share our organic homestead, called Byther Farm, with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.
We keep hybrid chickens and also have breeding flocks of Jersey Giants and Australorp chickens and Aylesbury ducks.

Another great tutorial - wether it's a natural mulch (cardboard/straw/chip) or landscape fabric/tarps it's so worth doing to save hours of labour pulling weeds and knocking back grasses!

I pulled up some victorian flagstones in my 1840 built house and there were large flat weeds under - they were absolutely SNOW white weeds that hadnt seen sun for over 150 years - VERY creepy. Within 24 hours they were standing up and dark green. Smothering weeds does not kill them. Strim it, cultiuvate it and then cover it - just as organic and far quicker.
Perennials need to be dug out ASAP! I know this after only 6 months of having an allotment. I thought I could just cover paths with fabric membrane and woodchips. I lightly dug the beds and covered with compost. It looked great at first...now I've realised I have a MASSIVE problem with wild garlic/onions. They're everywhere, bursting through membranes and thick compost layers. Apparently there's no way to get rid of them other than digging them up so I've got alot of work to do😅 all I'm saying is don't rush into this no dig stuff. You may need a whole season of proper digging to get to a decent starting point

I didn't think I had nettles on my place until yesterday, I discovered a patch after I cut down a patch of saplings and weeds, I am going to enjoy a pot of nettles in the Spring, come next year. Our recycling center lets us have some cardboard, and I go to my local hardware center and get their cardboard out of their dumpster (with their permission) I have put this down on the Virginia Creeper, thistles, comfrey and, from the same recycle center I have huge bags of shredded paper I put on top of the weeds and carboard, , Only been a few weeks, time will tell. I had no help, I'm almost 80 yo!

Ammonium Sulphamate is an excellent compost breaker down and if you accidentally spill it onto your really persistent weeds on the way to spray it on your compost you should see said weeds permanently disappear. So said a comical review on Amazon when I searched for a horsetail destroyer. I've been battling horsetail for nearly 40 years so am going to give it a try. On the way to my compost bin of course. I've had black plastic over the worst area for nearly 3 years and will take it up shortly but don't really have much faith that the horsetail (prehistoric weed with enormous roots) will have snuffed it. Oh and I've got stinging nettles and briars which arrived in horse manure.
I stopped weats with the help of a tick carpet on my terrases and pathways. Now I have a better handle on my garden I'm goning to remove it when done with most of the planting in my eatable garden this season.

Well done Liz, looks like that was a big area to cover so a lot of work. We have done a similar thing with our allotment, we used black plastic sheeting to smother a large infestation of couch grass, 5 months down the line the grass is dying off so hopefully we should be able to start using the space next year.

They are waste products from companies who have stuff delivered to them. Look around at local small business parks for companies that might get deliveries and then ask them.

Hi Liz. Hope you are feeling a little better. Can you please tell me what type of weed suppressing membrane you are using. It looks much thicker and stronger than I have previously used. And can you say where you bought it? Before watching You tube I didn,t realise I didn't have to take all the weeds out before laying the membrane. So in my last garden I dug the soil and weeded thoroughly before laying it between my many shrubs. I then used old broken paving stones to hold it down .It didn't look that pretty but because we spent a lot of time away from home at that time , I had to suppress the weeds somehow. The gardens each side of mine were wild. We had a dense hedge on one side which I really liked as it had all sorts of things growing in it including wild blackberries. They had to be kept on top of to stop them taking over. The property we live in now was once a basketball court. The builder laid turf but the ground wasn't very well prepared for it. I am having trouble with a weed with yellow flowers that sends shoots everywhere, I've forgotten the name of it ,and the the lawn is full of dandelions and clover and some pretty little wild flowers. The clover and wild flowers I don't mind .I made a narrow border at the back but I think to widen it I need to have raised beds. It gets very boggy in the one corner and at the other corner is a steep bank. I would like a grape vine mainly for the leaves to make dolmades. They grow well without a greenhouse in the Vale of Glamorgan but I never had any success in the last place in the Rhondda with them. We are now quite high up the mountain . It may be to cold for them without a greenhouse. How are yours doing? Great video. Love Margaret

You are welcome to some from here, I know chickens don't like fresh nettles but they are supposed to like them when they are dried - no one told my chickens this, they give them a wide berth whatever state the nettles are in! I've got a couple of other patches of them too, so we are still supporting the butterflies and other pollinators that visit the garden. :-)

Did you pay for those pallets? Here in the US you could find them for free all the time till those who where giving them away discovered the demand and started charging for them. $2-6 per pallet here. Of course you can get the broken one's for free, but isn't that more work? Good idea keeping the chicken away!

Hi liz, we just inherited a half plot that has very stony ground with lots of weeds as well as the odd bit of veg here and there , its divided by some raspberry brambles, we fancy keeping some brambles and netting them but want to tidy it up and start a couple of no dig patches...any suggestions for getting rid of some brambles but keeping them under control, also can we cover the ground straight away ? sorry, its our first plot so may be a bit ignorant. thanks!
Since you planned to cover the area with elevate-chickens-above-the-surface palettes, could you not have used cardboard and wood chips?
Hi Tam, I chose the membrane because the chickens will move the wood chips and scratch the cardboard letting the light back to the stinging nettles and hogweed. Thanks for watching!

Hi Liz! Love your videos, can I ask if the covering needs to be on a full year? I'm laying one now (Dec 2020) I was hoping to uncover it to begin planting in May, do you think this is enough time? It will have been covered for approximately 5 months

For really strong pernicious weeds the cover needs to be down for around 6-12 months. I've just covered an area that has a few bits of grass and annual weeds which I'll lift in late April or early May to use. The stronger or more vigorous the plant, the longer the cover needs to be down.

I just bought 1.500 square meters of extreemly weedy soil that i want to fix in no-dig way. I cut everything, and now i have to prevent them from coming back.
Local farmers suggested herbicide, burning soil or digging out all roots ( the last one is too expensive, first two I don't like at all) so i would go with a cardboard method.
Hi, for light annual weeds a few months should be enough, for these pernicious perennials I'm leaving it for at least 12 months. I am about to make an update video looking at how well it has worked so far. You can either cover them as shown in this video or you can dig out all the roots - but you need to get every last little piece of root that you can. Do not use a rotavator on the area with bindweed, you will just chop up the roots and have even more plants!

There's couch grass everywhere here too, I have no idea how to get rid of it, it just keeps coming back!
@@LizZorab it will. I am gradually removing every single root by hand. I expect that by the time I've got to the last if it, it'll be growing again where I started 🤦♀️
much better to 'cut' weed control fabric with a blowtorch or similar using scissors you end up with a mass of horrible threads.....
Killing nettles ? Probably the most nutritious plant in your garden.
They are only of use as nutrients if we eat them, which we don't and nor do the chickens or ducks. I keep two other areas of nettles for wildlife to live in and on that covers about 1/10th acre.
