Cold-soaked meals: easy, stoveless dishes for camping, or for when you just don't want to cook

  • We all know that people who backpack are all about efficiency. They know the lightest and easiest way to do anything -- especially make food. So I took a pack from their book, and made a few camping meals that required no flame, no fuel, and no heat -- only patience. Just add water (or whatever liquid) and wait.
    ON THE MENU
    - Couscous with chickpeas, almonds, and dried fruit
    - Peanut noodles (classic!)
    - S'mores icebox cake? pudding? Not sure what to call it.

Something my mom would do when we were young and camping is using pillsbury or store brand buscuits in a can and then wrap each one around a stick and cook them over a campfire, like you would for hotdogs or marshmellows. After experience, you will learn how long to cook them for the "doneness" you prefer. Then dip them in melted butter and then in cinammon and sugar. YUMyum!

But let’s be honest. Everything bagel seasoning never needs justification. It all looked good! And congrats on hitting 9k.

Even when I was an avid backpacker, I like the hot meal. I usually cold soaked my food during the day in a stove safe container, and then use minimal fuel to heat it up.

when doing oats / oatmeal try a juice instead of water. i know apple works well. also the mac & cheese cups / rice roni cups require 3/4 cups water an need to be cooked in boiling water for the usual 8-10 minutes. this gives a one person sized meal. add a tuna or chicken to them to up it a bit. oh yougurt, add some ovailtine chocolate mix about 4 tablespoons to a serving of a fruity yogurt to kick it up. did the orange cream one an came very good. try adding chocolate chips or chunks to the top of the smore mix.

We have a variety of rice called "komol saol" which translates to "soft rice". This can be eaten after soaking in water for 30 to 60 mins. It is quite good when eaten with milk and jaggery. We also have a type of "flat rice" or "chira" which can be similarly softened by soaking with water. For a savoury no cook treat we have soaked chick peas and green grams seasoned with salt, mustard oil & lime juice and mixed with green chllies & onions.

That all sounds so delicious -- especially the rice with milk and jaggery -- that would be a perfect breakfast dish for me. 😋

"Sizzling marshmallow ASMR" for the win!
I'd never heard of sumac as a seasoning. Putting that on my list to try...
    Thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I make a dish with ice cream sandwiches...layer sandwiches, Cool Whip, crushed Oreos, drizzle caramel and chocolate sauces.
Yum! I love a good trifle dish desert, but this could probably be tweaked to be camping certified!

You could crumble oreo or other chocolate cookies on top. I'm definitely making the chocolate fluff

Yum! I have also seen whole oreos instead of grahams for the “cake” layer. Also looked really good!

I think I saw a short with round rice paper sheets dipped in water and then cut into strips to be wide noodles. 6:31

I haven't had any sugar, but felt like I was seeing in a different dimension. I actually licked my finger to get the marshmallow off.

North Vietnamese soldiers would put rice and water in a plastic bag and keep inside their shirt as a trail food.,

Interesting! I’m researching this video, I learned that some backpackers do something similar, and call it a “crotchpot”. You can probably figure out how their method is a litttle different. 😏

These are awesome, I can see myself even bringing some of these for a long day's hike, not just for camping adventures!
How long did you soak the ramen for?

    • @ShoestringMartha
      @ShoestringMartha  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I had them soaking for the 3 hours that I was away from camp, but online sources say they only need 30 minutes!

      I have a formula:
+ I start with rolled oats, not quick oats. I like a little chew.
+ twice the quantity liquid (any kind of milk, yogurt, juice, water)
      + flavoring agents (cinnamon, etc)
      + sweetener (sugar, honey, jam)
      + fruit (dried or fresh)
      + nuts + seeds
+ add ins (protein powder, cocoa powder, PB powder, etc)
EXAMPLE: oats, milk, pumpkin pie spice and vanilla, maple syrup, dried cranberries, pecans, pumpkin purée

🤔 Wondering if you ever read what’s inside those bags/containers of ingredients you’re using to put together your meals?
Just it’s definitely not what your body needs after a long day of activities I feel.

I only eat what makes me happy, which is just about everything - except cilantro 😝 - that stuff can get bent.
