It brings an idea to mind. If it is found by a human, and allowed to squire with him, would the beast then kill the man when it reaches adulthood, or would it allow the humans to build a city below its lair?
@@td335 It was written in the dossier that the Holdtakers usually remember the foster parent who sired them and returns the favour. And seeing it could be fostered by something as small as a Painted bloodletter, why not!

I love how much dragons use their wings in this world other than flight. Flight is a cool ability to have, but I've never seen any other applications for wings explored so thoroughly. I honestly find it fantastic that, though not every dragon can fly, no dragon's wings are ever truly useless. Hullbreakers use their wings to swim, Kinsbane use their wings to glide and crash into prey, Rattle Dreads use their wings as shields while on the ground, and Blindsiders melt the eyes of their enemies with powerful bioluminescence. Holdtakers are the most interesting for me, personally, as their polydactyly allows their wings to effectively double as hands. Though obviously too big and strong to ever need opposable thumbs, since their weight and strength can do the job of bulldozing anything in the way, I do wonder if maybe smaller groups of Holdtaker could one day mutate even more dexterous hands. All in all, these different justifications for dragons having wings regardless of actual flight capability are incredible. Because then they all get to have that moment where they stand over a cowering knight, spread their wings high and wide, and let out that mighty roar! The one, cinematic pose that no dragon could ever go wrong with!
I believe the reason why people haven't domesticated the Holdtaker Dragon with its squiring behavior IS because of its squiring behavior. Imagine a human town was once greeted by a squiring Holdtaker who had imprinted on humans, and the humans decided to keep it alive. The town then prospers as the Holdfast grows into its Guardian Protector, while also providing the humans with a glut of metals. This symbiotic relationship continues for as long as the dragon is alive, however, the Holdtaker needs to have children and those children have an instinctual need to leave the nest. Now the original Holdtaker is an elder Dragon, and the city is surrounded by a ring of Holdtakers that have not imprinted on humans but have originated from their city. This is not a sustainable situation and when the elder Holdtaker dies, his children set upon the city like a pack of hungry wolves.
Good thinking! The Holdtaker is prone to seeing humans as prey shaped as well in adolescence, and will react poorly if people try to harvest its metal for themselves!
The idea of it consuming metal is great and could possibly result in extremely rare subspecies that feed upon very rare/exotic or magical metals giving it and or it's flame unique properties

It sounds like these Dragons could be rather simple to domesticate. If they attempt to form symbiotic relationships when young to obtain food and other resources then, Humans could certainly fulfill those needs as the Dragon grows, including its metallic necessities. Granted, the resources required for caring for such massive creatures as well as their possible ill temperament towards their own species would need some good old fashion Human picked adaptation. Even still, one of these massive Dragons would certainly help Humans to slither their heads out of their holes.
It’s a tempting, simple path that many have tried. The issue is that when the dragon grows, humans enter it’s prey size range in adolescence, then as an adult it would simple raid and take the city. It’s the sort of creature that’s just out of reach for humanity, keen on keeping them under claw
The whole "raids cities to devour their metal" bit does raise a question for me-why don't the cities simply leave out metal for the dragon to take? Unless it requires such vast quantities that such offerings wouldn't be practical, surely it would be cheaper to just leave out some heaps of scrap for the things to take.

Your series is one of the most creative stuff I've seen in a long time! As a biologist, I'm tempted to ask you something: how would these dragons put food in their mouths with so many projections coming from the mandible and the maxilla? And, why do their teeth have no occlusion?
Hey! They can simply bite and eat their food, some of them use their talons to “finger feed”. If by occlusion you mean the lining up of the teeth- they are! Holdtaker’s mouth is slightly open on the illustration, but closes tightly like a crocodile’s
Great video! The holdtaker has such an interesting design, it blends the classic dragon tropes in really well with real biology. Which dragon will you be making a video of next? (I hope its the blindsider( I think that's what its name was)
the minute it released i got recommended one of the rare times youtube recommendations gives me PEAK CONTENT instead of some weird thing by the way, writing fire with these videos can't wait to buy the final book
Make subespecies of the dragons, like a holdtaker thats rusts the armor because of a uncomon quimical reaction and spits molten toxic metal, and rare matutations, like gigantism, two heads, this ones could be legendary folkloric species!
Hi Sawyer! Excellent video as always. I have a question about the slayers: is there any group of slayers known for using firearms to kill dragons? The pepperman are known for their spice weapons, but are there groups who actively use cannons, rifles or any other kinds of firearms?
Ok so since this is 3rd largest flying dragon. . . who's 2nd & 1st? I assume those are the Kinsbane and the Resplendent Armorshear. 6:43. Ok sounds like the sentence was cut off. It stopped with "variety of"
Definitely the Armorshear, but I think the second biggest is the Sunscourge maybe? Kinsbane are huge, yeah, but they’re a mainly grounded species. I could be totally wrong though!
This is amazing art work. Wish I could draw them like this, but going back to the original dragon aka a gold hoarding village raiding one. Can’t wait for more!
What would happen if a dragon squiring what a human Would it then protect the town or would it leave the town alone because this could be a viable strategy for the towns if so
It wouldn’t. They don’t form any bonds with non dragons like mammals. Plus Sawyer wants to keep this dragon as a physical embodiment of humanity and the rise of us using metals and tools. Something he has said off this site. Don’t remember if it was deviant art or his discord.

Metal breathing dragon? You have my attention!!
Imagine just minding your business as a farmer then out of nowhere a giant reptilian horror shreds you to ribbons with sabaton, acdc or disturbed..
Great video! The holdtaker has such an interesting design, it blends the classic dragon tropes in really well with real biology. Which dragon will you be making a video of next? (I hope its the blindsider( I think that's what its name was)
Squiring is such a cool concept
Give this man some comments, he need some love (For the algorithm of course)(and the support)(and the love of the dragons)
It seems I have a new favorite, I love this series
Thanks!!
1:17 it’s that big! I thought it was much smaller than that like the size of wailing Bishop or something I didn’t think it was that big
They definitely grow huge (most of that size is wings too! Most profiles have there wings folded up on other dragons)
Probably my favorite Dragon so far!
Looks awesome
Love the head design
Already looking forward to the next video :)
Awesome, The Holdtaker is my favorite dragons out of the many you have created and seen a video of it is just beautiful.
A dragon with a small feifdom is insanely creative good work!
Nooooo I edited the post now its not pinned lmao
Getting ready for another banger
I can't wait for the book to be available at stores one day I wish I could have donated but alas I cannot I wish the best for this story
Ps this was my favorite dragon so far by a long shot
I need it but I can't have it......But if it appears in a store, then we have a different story.
i can't donate for myself but I'm glad that you got even more than you needed to continue this amazing project.
the minute it released i got recommended
one of the rare times youtube recommendations gives me PEAK CONTENT instead of some weird thing
by the way, writing fire with these videos can't wait to buy the final book
Just subscribe and turn on notofications
You have a knack for creature mouth design
One of my favorite parts to do!
As far as I can tell the Holdtaker is one the closest to the classic European dragon(aside from the Great Kinsbane and any others I don’t know about)
Hold taker and Kinsbane partnership? Yeah I don't think we should fight that.
Love the blue crest a very striking design
Glad you like it! I enjoy blues
Could you make a tutorial video about short face dragons, i have a hard time drawing them without them ending up looking derpy.
Make subespecies of the dragons, like a holdtaker thats rusts the armor because of a uncomon quimical reaction and spits molten toxic metal, and rare matutations, like gigantism, two heads, this ones could be legendary folkloric species!
He has a two headed dragon that was evolved over time through the mutation
I love the fast image change!
My favorite dragon of yours so far.
11:32 I love you world building it is so imaginative. I can’t wait to have your book
Thank you!
@@grantowens7537the Sunscourge isn't even near the second largest
Sea monsters big enough to be a reliable food source for dragons? Brood parasites?? I hope you also get to talk about these creatures one day.
I will!
11:14 Name a stronger mythical duo. I'll wait
darkstalker and albetross lol yeah but a kinsbane and that thing would be unstoppable in that world
I'm unfamiliar with those. Ngl, you're name tripped me out a bit XD Thought I was talking to myself for a moment
@@DragonKing-te9wy lol
We want more sea/ocean based dragons! Maybe breathing boiling water.
This is amazing art work. Wish I could draw them like this, but going back to the original dragon aka a gold hoarding village raiding one. Can’t wait for more!
Thanks man!
What would happen if a dragon squiring what a human
Would it then protect the town or would it leave the town alone because this could be a viable strategy for the towns if so
With a human sorry miss type
It wouldn’t. They don’t form any bonds with non dragons like mammals. Plus Sawyer wants to keep this dragon as a physical embodiment of humanity and the rise of us using metals and tools. Something he has said off this site. Don’t remember if it was deviant art or his discord.
Oh... We are NOT making it out alive of the catacumbs with this one.
