He went down on one knee and got right back up. He said something like "That's ok I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend tonight. What a jerk to throw something when those guys are playing their hearts out. A pretty good example of exactly how good they were and they really weren't that old. They had a machine gun drummer, a solid basist who could back up the vocals, an outrageous front man who didn't even have to sing that well to be a success, and of course the greatest living guitarist in the world.
@@robertschiffhauer1679 I've read so many things about the greatest guitarist in the world that I quit listening to them. Jimmy Page brought a lot to the table, but so did Jimi Hendrix, Chuck, Berry, etc. All of them have one thing in common, that they all did something unique. Personally, Clapton is the most overlooked one.
I remember seeing Van Halen in Fresno,Ca. way back in 1978. As the opening act for Black Sabbath, there was no compairson VH should have been the headline act!!
I saw this tour, Los Angeles Sports Arena, then a few weeks later at the San Diego Sports arena. As I understand, at the San Diego Sports arena show Jan Van Halen was there and That was the most amazing Guitar solo I believe he ever did, it was about 20+ minutes long and every second you were on the edge of your seat. I truly believe Eddie took it to the Next level with his father in the audience. I was so fortunate-(along with my friends), to have been there to witness Edward at the very TOP of his game for his POP. Miss you Ed-The best ever!
That's so cool that you saw them back to back. I tried to see them at the US festival but was too young to go. Was the set list the same or did they fool around a bit?
Luke I attended the SAN DIEGO SHOW also. The band was in top form they were making big-time money and the fans were there in droves. That guitar solo was epic some kind of stereo split. The sound was bouncing off the walls and inside my 🎉🎉brain
Edward was a true genius with the 6 string. The little things like the "inverted pick slide @7:12" to end this song was amazing. Who else could think of something like that? I don't know if there will ever be another guitarist to match him. Then again he set the road for thousands of killer guitarists to follow his many tricks and style. RIP Edward, Jimi ,Jeff, etc. etc. (Rusty)
Ha Treys still shredding, the 90's was just the warm up, this is great by the way, not a huge fan but Eddie was aaaaamazing, nothing but love for this band and their tunes. Phish is the next level👽⚡🕉️

I was there that night at the US festival in 1983. I was serving in the Marines in SoCal during Van Halen’s heyday!! What a time in my life when VH ruled the world!! RIP Edward!!!
Those were all my favorite Van Halen tunes! Those guys were tight and could move back then. I saw them for my first concert in 84 just before my 12th birthday. They are the reason why I play drums!
Good Lord thats incredible! I saw them on the Women and Children First tour(1979) and this is exactly how it was!! Mesmerising, jawdropping and hypnotizing!! Alex's drums were so loud and powerful I almost passed out. Eddie was unreal and Dave is probably the greatest front man of all time, as you see in this video!! Michael Anthonys iconic voice and thumping bass was so great helping make this band unstoppable! I saw them again with Sammy and they were good but not the same at all.
VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, F.U.C.K AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! @@stefanstrittmatter6459 they aren’t overlooked by anyone, its apparently a new trend for people to say dumb shit about someone or something thats always been widely acknowledged and highly regarded and act like its underrated
I love Ed's chord work. Always so full and meaningful. You can get a lot of guys that can rip scales but not many who can make music combining chords and scale single notes.
Exactly. Today's shredders are faster, more proficient, but can't hold a candle to Eddie's rhythm and music writing ability. Only second to hendrix because he was born later.
The very beginning shows two brothers that grew up playing together. They are so tight. And it's been a little while since Eddie's passing and I understand that people feel so close to him without really knowing him. Eddie was our American guitar hero. Van Halen meant alot to us. Eddie's sonic boom and sending us to a different dimension thru a potal in time that's why people were so upset when the break-up happened with Dave. Thanks for Sammy picking up the torch and helping to carry the Van Halen legacy to it's end.
What memories for those of us who grew up when these guys exploded. World was such a different place. Told to get out of the house unless it was raining and “go outside.” No one asked where you were going, just be home by dinner. No cell phones. No woke bullshit. Memories were made…friends won and lost….feelings hurt and backbones strengthened….and music like this!
I saw them open for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die tour. Friends who didn't go would ask "How was Sabbath?" and I'd reply "good, but the opening band Van Halen was amazing!". This tour was probably the most fun I have ever had at a concert....

Maybe the greatest live footage of any band in history. If there is something else out there by ANYONE that tops this, please reply and let me know. These guys were such a visual act, I can't imagine that they don't have tons of footage sitting around, even going back to the backyard party/nightclub era.
there is actually very little live video (but LOTS of soundboard audio) that exists from those early days; primarily due to the fact that their road manager at the time was extremely protective of them and would deal very severely with anyone that attempted to film them then (pre-cellphone era)...quite a shame in retrospect; i was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times during that period though 😎
@@MackAxyzz It sux the high quality video in this clip doesn't even last 3min before they jump to the original footage they used in the MTV era. (which is relatively poor quality). They were in a jam segment of Cream's "I'm So Glad" but anyone can see Roth's wicked genius spontaneity even today in interviews. Like him or not (I always have) he's a force of nature. EVH, AVH and Mike were gladiators that night. I saw them in 1980 and 1982. Sort of sloppy at times then, but it was their rocket ship you hopped on and had their blast with them!

They had a machine gun drummer, a solid basist who could back up the vocals, an outrageous front man who didn't even have to sing that well to be a success, and of course the greatest living guitarist in the world.
Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist in the world.Eddie’s in the top 5 though.
Personally, Clapton is the most overlooked one.
didn't have to sing that well? he's possibly among the top 10 for excellent vocalists
@@jayyy1041 lol! Youd better rethink that one! Roth, and is 20s, had his voice breaking in live performances let alone when he was 50!
@@jayyy1041 bro thats crazy talk, gotta love Dave but greatest singer he was not, great showman though
This brings me back to a time I miss so much ….no cell phones no social media garbage…….rock and roll

RIP Edward, Jimi ,Jeff, etc. etc. (Rusty)
I was there! First time ever seeing them. I was a young teenager 🤘🏻Still get teary eyed by the loss of the great EVH.
Eddie's sound and performance still outweighs any existing rock guitarist today. Hands down!! DLR is a one of a kind too
Hmmmmm. I'm guess you never saw Trey Anastasio perform with Phish in the 90s....
@@Mesaman0825 kkkkk nunca ouvi falar.
Alex and Eddie were joined at the hip I swear. We're not worthy!
@@Mesaman0825 Who??
Ha Treys still shredding, the 90's was just the warm up, this is great by the way, not a huge fan but Eddie was aaaaamazing, nothing but love for this band and their tunes. Phish is the next level👽⚡🕉️
great footage!
I was fortunate enough to work security on the 1984 tour...what a visual and aural experience! A moment in time that will never be duplicated 👍👍
I was at the L.A. Forum for that tour!
My first concert ever was 1984. I was only in 6th grade.
Fantastic! You should maybe post a blog online detailing your experiences.
Take care.
🎸🙋♀️So cool you got to do that.
it really was...wish I'd had taken photos but even disposable cameras were kinda pricy then🤷♂ @@marlahart2060
Nothing but love, man. The mighty Van Halen. Wow!
Saw them on this tour. Amazing is all I can say. Thanks for the memories.
Van Halen/Boston/Journey/the Police/Santana /AC/DC Ozzy with RANDY ! SRV etc etc ....man ...what a time for music
When Van Halen was on the top of their game!! Great times were had by all!!!
I was there that night at the US festival in 1983. I was serving in the Marines in SoCal during Van Halen’s heyday!! What a time in my life when VH ruled the world!! RIP Edward!!!
Thank you for your Service ! God Bless America, and God Bless The Mighty Vannnnn Halennnn
Those were all my favorite Van Halen tunes! Those guys were tight and could move back then. I saw them for my first concert in 84 just before my 12th birthday. They are the reason why I play drums!
I can relate.... it was EVH and Angus Young that made me pick up a guitar.....
Just two brothers jamming together like they did in their house all those years ago when they were kids. Magical.
Very cool moment.
In total sync. Ed has said, "Alex is the Rock, & I am the Roll" = Absolute perfection!
RIP EDDIE
THREE KEYS TO THE VAN HALEN SOUND: EDDIE’S GUITAR 🎸 ALEX’S SNARE DRUM 🥁 AND MICHAEL ANTHONY’S STRATOSPHERE BACKING VOCALS!!!
The mix on this is phenomenal.
Could you imagine if these guys played at half time at the Super Bowl?
Exactly it would have been the most amazing set. They'd have been flying through the air. Anyway we're still waiting for videos to come out alex is a stubborn son of a b****
Wardrobe malfunctions. Everywhere. Just a continual blur over Dave’s crotch… 🎉
Like circa '81...absolutely...Jack Daniels in hand, DLR shovin his sweaty bulge right in the camera...thats EXACTLY what this country needs.
Oh that would be one way to get me to watch it!
That would of been great
The boys absolutely slaying it at the top of the rock n’ roll mountain!
Nothing will ever top that live performance of Unchained. I'm glad it was captured on film. That's how you start a song.
Amen bro. Killed it from all sides.
That second video loop. I was there in 1981, Fair Warning tour Oakland,California . Best concert I ever saw in my life.
Name one other band that makes covers sound better than the original. Killer
Yeah, but they made that one sound like shit.
Metallica - Garage days, Inc
Even Ray Davies of the Kinks openly admitted that VH's cover of "You Really Got Me" was way better than the Kinks' version
Guns n Roses
Any band with a singer that can sing.
Saw these guys twice...on the Women and Children First and Fair Warning tours in Rochester NY! Threw a homemade banner onstage that they waved to the crowd with the slogan VanHalen Kicks Ass! They told t shirts with that slogan on later tours
Awesome. I think Eddie and Michael’s backing vocals are great and often overlooked.
Agreed. Stellar
Yep..iron Mike still stellar to this day.
Michael's vocals were integral to the band. Didn't sound like VH after they stabbed him in the back.
overlooked? by whom?
@@stefanstrittmatter6459 they aren’t overlooked by anyone, its apparently a new trend for people to say dumb shit about someone or something thats always been widely acknowledged and highly regarded and act like its underrated
Holy crap, that was awesome! What a band they were. Classic!
You have to when you are the only guitarist in the band,
The very beginning shows two brothers that grew up playing together.
I'm so happy I grew up in the 70s and 80s. God was music so good back then. 😊
AMEN!!
I saw them open for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die tour. Friends who didn't go would ask "How was Sabbath?" and I'd reply "good, but the opening band Van Halen was amazing!".
This tour was probably the most fun I have ever had at a concert....
Hey Brother im familiar with VH but could you list the names of the songs that were featured in this vid. Im blown away. Amazing performance.
@@oscargutierrez4770 the 2nd song is Hear About it Later
Yup.
And that was awesome. Watching the two brothers have a conversation with their instruments is incredible.
My iPhone just melted…this was a killer live performance by the mighty VH!!!
There will never be a any band like this again! Energy, humor, great songs, the best showman in rock a d the greatest rock guitarist....this was The Greatest Show on Earth....the original Van Halen!!!!!!!!!!
Just close your eyes for a few minutes & this takes you back to the good old times back in high school. I could just envision every VH concert I went to & this band was the ultimate party band back in the day! Good times man…..
Few people understand what it takes to get in sync like this. Only brothers who have played together for a lifetime can do this sort of thing live.
LOUD and Clear!! Sounds great, looks great, feels great. Ladies and Gentlemen...the Mighty Vaaaaan Haleeeennnn!

One of the greatest live rock bands ever for sure.
This was the peak of their career
Physically all in sic shape, vocals tight, sound was spot on just a juggernaut of a band enjoying themselves
I saw this DIVER DOWN Tour and it was AWESOME!! He wore the stripes that year. Man those shows I can still remember them like they were yesterday. One of the greatset preforming bands ever.
This was the Fair Warning tour, and this was taped at the Oakland Coliseum on June 18, 1981
so many hits. Eddie’s playing is phenomenal imagine they still reaping royalties 45 years later
So this is Love!!! AWESOME Version .. that is some serious classic rock - LIVE!

Thanks for posting - I was 15 and there at the Oakland show in ‘81, and this only existed in my memory; so cool to see it again.
The first clip was from the Us Festival. I had just landed in California a couple of days earlier to visit my cousin
and he told me he scored tickets for the 3rd day "Heavy Metal Day." The bands were:
Motley Crue
Quite Riot
Triumph
Judas Priest
Scorpions
Ozzy Osborne and of course,,,,,THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN🎶🎶🎶🎶
The ticket cost $17,,, I still have the stub😂

Growing up listening to these guys in the late 70's and 80's I wondered why they fired Dave....looking back to live footage now I say "oh, I know why....he didn't do anything they did in studio. LOL It must have been so frustrating on stage with him. Sammy came in and everything was perfect, even live. Take nothing away from Dave, I love him too......I can just imagine being up there with him. Damn they were fucking good though! This is awesome footage!!! Thanks!
I always loved Dave's iconic screams back then!
Goddamn, that band was so good! I thank God I had the good fortune to see them at least with Dave never saw him with Sammy. I wish I would’ve! Man, we miss you, Eddy. But this rock will live on forever and thank you for whoever posted this.
It was symbiotic between Alex and Edward . Ed said many times he didn't like playing live without his brother . Thank you for posting this nice clip.
Imagine what it's like for Alex since Ed died. Those two worked and played together for a long time. There's talk about a Van Halen tribute but I don't think Alex will do it.
@@lolatu8255 I don't think so either . Especially when Sam tried to get in .
Oh the memories. In college in Vermont in 82,83? Drove my 1977 VW baby blue Rabbit down to NYC. Scalped a ticket and saw them with Dave at MSG! FANTASTIC!!!
One of the cleanest versions of Unchained live. Even with Eddies mistake at the beginning. So cool!
Not a mistake.. It's the live version!
@@nodaysback1 That makes no sense. A mistake is a mistake, live or studio. No rock star plays perfectly. They don't even try. But it's still a mistake.

Breathless. One of the ULTIMATE BEST that's ever been...no one comes close for that incredible Rock
This video is just BADASS!❤
This clip th-cam.com/video/9XBrwfwaleQ/w-d-xo.html is only a 15 minute clip but it's probably the best quality I've found so far. Just the best! So glad I saw the early VH - invasion tour!! Such a life Changing experience-
I saw the Diver Down tour in Austin. I still remember some of it. It was an experience .
Listening to the insane riffs and weird chord progressions, you gotta give Dave credit for somehow coming up with memorable Melodie’s over that stuff.
Spot on. He also wrote perfect lyrics for the songs. Ted Templeman's book really illustrates that.
@@ZeNeonKnightI thought Ted's description of Roth's lyrics as beautifully abstract was perfect.
David is a master at his craft
@@Swanlord05 WITHOUT A DOUBT! He was every bit as integral to the band, as EVH. EVERY BIT.
