Your uncle was an inspirational figure to me and to many others, Rhett. I was too young to see him with Hawkwind but saw him solo several times and had the great pleasure of meeting him on three occasions. It's often said that you shouldn't meet your heroes but Robert was absolutely charming, a real gentleman who took the time to speak with his audience, even spotty teens such as myself. I still regularly listen to his music and read his words and reflect on what might have been had he not been taken at such a tragically young age.
I was introduced to Robert Calvert and Hawkwind in the late 1980s. Definitely was a unique person and remarkable life that touched so many. I would not have made the music I made without his influence, just from hearing his voice and words on recordings. What a gift it would have been to have known him.
I first heard Hawkwind in 1991 on a compilation CD I bought in and I've been listening ever since. Robert was definitely a talented snd interesting guy.
Met Bob when he stayed at my house I Chorlton for a couple of days 1985 . One of the nicest guys I have ever met .Took him to the Tuesday night night ceilidhs at The Beech pub no drama just a very nice ordinary guy enjoying what was back then a normal mid week excuse for a few beers and music scene.
Did he take acid (continuously ) with hawkwind? If he mentioned? , I know he took amphetamines not good for his mind .And he said he didn't like taking 'loads ' of drugs
I was so very lucky to see him perform live with his band captain Lockheed and the Star fighters and little did I know at the time just how fortunate I was because when he was taken from us so early I would become one of the very few people to see him perform at his very best!!! God bless you lucky Leif
I used to work for Hawkwind & grew very fond of him & Simon King. I found some wedding photos I took of him & wife recently but can’t remember her name. He was treated very badly by the man who runs Hawkwind today in Paris. I know he could be a bit wild but he didn’t deserve that
What a legend RC was! Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is an album I first heard in 1975, it blew my mind, I never stopped playing it, nowadays? I still play it but not too often, but when I do I so enjoy it, utterly brilliant and so unique.
hawkwinds best music is the stuff with Calvert....i remember seeing them on the Bolan show..i do wish there was more footage of him ...but we have the music and that the most important thing ..
Hi Phil, thanks for sharing the information, most interesting. The day that you saw him looking very pale - did he pass away that same day? Such a tragic early death but his poetry and music lives on. Did you ever meet Nik Turner, as I know he was from the area too, but maybe he had moved away by then?
@@6milphil975 I once asked Calvert what Silver Machine was about and he turned round and pointed at that bloody bike leaning against the Lloyds bank wall - he took great joy in terrorising people riding it in the high street all with his flight hat and goggles on - he didnt say whether it was or not - just looked at it
What the hell was wrong with Robert? He plagiarized almost every song he was credited for from various books! Worse than Jimmy Page. I loved his singing and speaking, but the stealing was too much.
Incredibly proud of my uncle and heart-warmed to hear all of your comments. His brother, Derek’s Son.

Love bob! I always liked his story about writing Silver Machine, riding on his bike! :D

I have always liked Hawkwind best when Calvert was a singer. Great music!

Allo, yes same day. I don't think I did meet Nik.
That bike wasn't the one that he wrote Silver machine about was it?
Hah! I truly don't know... but it was indeed silver.
@@6milphil975 it probably was because the joke was that the 'silver machine' was a bicycle, so if he loved it like you say, then it all adds up
