As a current elementary educator and graduate student it is so important to me that I be able to bring learning to life for my fourth grade students and the way to do that is to learn from those who are veterans in the field of education. From those who have also tried a different approach when working with a wide range of students in a general education classroom. I appreciate the feedback and support the teacher community from around the world offers and it allows me to change my approach daily.

As a graduate student, I am currently discussing this topic with several others around the globe. I find it interesting that PLNs have been our major socialization face-to-face and now learning about this increases the value of those relationships. Thank you for this very informative video that I will use and reference in my discussion this coming week.

As a current student teacher about to graduate, I have already seen the importance of building a PLN both as a new teacher and a more experienced teacher. No matter how long you have spent studying education, there are so many things that only experience in the classroom will teach you and allow you to build your skills. Connecting with other professionals allows you to share your experiences and learn from others at the same time you are building your skills as a teacher.

I find PLNs to be so incredibly helpful and I was surprised by how many "groups" I found myself to already be in before knowing what it actually was. I love the idea of spreading good ideas and discussion to people who are in similar professional realms. It is nice and relieving to talk to people who understand the job like no other.

I enjoyed this video. Learning about a PLN started for me as an assignment for one of my Master's of Teaching courses on the journey of achieving my MAT. Now that I have gained some insight via this video and other sources. I am excited to start my own PLN and get connect to online communities creating more opportunities for my life long learning as an educator and also on a personal level.

PLN to me is the community one builds in the ongoing development of learning. Within the network, are people that vary which makes each network unique in their own way. The information that is exchanged amongst the network allows for different points or views to be included. The idea of a PLN is great because it can also be utilized for specific content focus which leaves the options limitless when searching for information that applies to what each person is looking for.

My Personal Learning Network is about endless learning. I can always become more efficient in things as I learn from my peers. I can also develop new skills as my peers show the new trends of learning. I can bounce ideas and problems of people as well. It's a huge benefit to have a group I can rely on 24/7.

To me, PLN is a special backup for educators to have at any time when it is needed. In the real world, it can be time-consuming and difficult to go to events to network with others. This is such a great option to have resources at your fingertips and be able to participate to help others. I love the idea of being able to share ideas and questions and reflect with people from all over the world.

I think PLNs are so awesome because they really can be so personalized to whatever you need them to be. There really is something out there for everyone, and if there isn't, you have the ability to make something yourself! There are so many branches in education, and to find a community of people who are also experiencing what I am can be so encouraging.

With technology and networking sites being so easily accessible, it is a great opportunity to expand your own knowledge, as well as share your ideas with others on a global level. I think creating my own PLN will be an interesting task and I look forward to learning more about them.

I've personally only ever used the term "Professional' learning network but, I really like swapping that for "Personalized". Truly, it feels more authentic to what I am doing. Of course, I am being "professional" but centering professionalism in a creative and open space supportive of stepping out on limbs, taking risks, and failing...makes me feel less likely to take those risks because I have been normed that to be "professional" means to be "competent" and that failure is not a characteristic of that. By centering the "Personalized" nature of what I am doing in these spaces, specific to the unique needs of my students at any given time, I feel like I am more able to give myself grace to ask questions and fail forward. Also, it seems like it adds value to the merits of my endeavors in this space by acknowledging the unique lens I might be bringing at any given point in time; that it is directly impacted by my context and experience as opposed to some wide ranging ideal of "Professionalism" or what it means to be "Professional" (which also varies significantly across time, space, and culture). "Personalized" represents his variation and celebrates it as value adding in a space filled with variety focused on supporting students and colleagues. Definitely going to start using the term Personalized Learning Networks from here on out : ) Anyone have any feedback that might make me consider an alternative or change my mind?

I would define a PLN as a collaboration between people with similar interests learning from each other by sharing experience and knowledge. Individuals throughout the PLN can engage at a level that they are comfortable with and can explore the thoughts and ideas of those that they want to.

When I think of a PLN, I think about having several critical friends available. PLNs are based on what you think you need and who you want to connect to for support, ideas, discussion and lots more. As a classroom teacher, I often found that I was most productive when I could collaborate with others. With the aid of technology, this collaboration is made so much easier because now we can connect to anyone, anywhere, anytime. You can share what you have learned and at the same time learn from others.

To me a PLN is your go to for what you need or what you want to contribute in your field. If I need help with reaching a student I can turn to my PLN to gain insight and direction. Or if I have a specific area I am proficient at I have a place that I can share my success and failures for those who need the help that I once needed. I see the importance of a PLN but a hard part for is to commit to it to make it grow. I have always been an off the grid educator (no social media) so I see this as a challenge to get out of my comfort zone and grow.

All about my understanding of PLN: PLNs is a network of connected educators and resources that support ongoing learning, sharing, and collaborating with each other. Most of the connected educators use their PLNs for professional growth and interactions. The PLN course is a free self-paced course that guides teachers step-by-step through the process of building their own professional learning network (PLN). It has broken down into seven steps and at the end of each step offers a short task to demonstrate learning while connecting with others. All participants who complete the PLN course will understand the benefits of it, how teachers use their PLN, be allowed to use different tools, and have access to a certificate in the seventh step of the course.

A PLN, or personal learning network, is, in my opinion, a collection of people who associate with one another for the purpose of exchanging knowledge, working together, and providing support for one another's educational and professional endeavors. A personal learning network (PLN) is more than just a group of acquaintances; it is a living web of connections and relationships that may connect learners with resources, opportunities, and support. Teachers, students, professionals, and others with a shared interest in a particular subject or industry can all be part of a PLN.

I absolutely love the idea of developing a PLN. It's genius and so so important. I especially found the concept of "lurking" mentioned in this video interesting. For me, before this video, "lurking" had an exclusively negative connotation. But in light of the context provided in this video I think that there are definitely some pros to "lurking". For example, when one is lurking you can gather more information by listening to others instead of constantly focusing on what you have to share. However, the con could be, for me atleast, getting more easily distracted because I know I don't have to share afterwards.

Working in a school with teachers instructing the same curriculum, and having access to the same resources can get a bit stagnant at times. Many of us will ask questions and share ideas, but the answers are most often limited to tools within our own school district. A PLN is a great way to reach outside of our district and learn from educators with different perspectives. We often have professional development trainings on a variety of teaching practices, but a PLN is specific to our needs and interests. Not only does it narrow down our search results, but we as teachers are more inclined to engage in the process because we are in control of what we're looking for. Individual teachers have their own way of doing things, and a PLN offers a new way to individualize and differentiate learning.

To me, personal learning networks can be any group of professionals selected by an individual to be part of a community of learning. As a librarian, I am part of several professional organizations, and I consider those to be my personal learning networks. We are able to get together as a group IRL a couple of times a year to discuss issues related to school librarianship; however, the conversation also extends to email listservs and social media even after our workshops and conferences have ended. Beyond professional organizations, I have a group of educators that I follow on Twitter and Google+. I am also very fortunate to be a part of the Google Certified Teacher Google Group, and I have learned an awful lot about Google tools in the past year from these incredible educators!

PLN is an unavoidable modern platform that someone such as an educator is part of in order to share and receive both personal and professional productive feedback that could help him or her strive in his or her respective profession. PLN is believed to have the potential to tear down geographic walls and make it easy for teachers to connect with other educators throughout the world. One might know that teaching is one of the stressful jobs on earth. It is even more stressful in the 21st century because of the fast-moving technology. By staying connected with one another, teachers have the chance to get supports from other educators that help them grow and become better, more relevant, and extremely culturally responsive teachers.

Personally I believe the concept of “lurking” undermines a lot of the benefits of a PLN. The goal is cooperative development, but in not contributing to discussion you are withholding your knowledge from others, while also missing the opportunity to get feedback and perspectives on the happenings of your professional life. You may also misunderstand what another is saying, and without participating, you miss the opportunity to get clarification and feedback. To me, it is the constant give and take of the PLN that seems the most appealing, but you must provide your own contributions for that to work.

A PLN can be used to give, get, find, and research information. I like the idea of the limitless fascists of possibilities this can bring to the classroom, students, and colleagues in and outside of your school to get , share, and give information and ideas about the information being discussed..

A PLN is a community using social media to learn, collect, communicate, share, ask and create with connected educators from all over the world. You can learn from resources and experiences of the rest of the group. In a way of speaking you are there as an educator and as a student. #ecoredes

What I am taking away from this is that you can be learning and connecting at any time in a variety of ways to improve my knowledge and to share information with others.

I kind of feel like I'm stuck in the "lurk" stage and have not yet moved to "share" stage. I feel like once I've grown my confidence in my PLN, I'll feel more comfortable sharing.

Hmm. How to define PLN. I suppose it is the group of people you interact with who help you grow. That's a very broad definition, and could extend to mean even my mother. Hell, one could even say the entire world is you PLN, if you take it upon yourself to always be learning in every interaction you experience. I get it- this video refines that concept into meaning those within your industry who are sharing ideas and experiences you can learn from. But I feel that is too narrow, and might make people attempt to "stay in their lane". That is where "lurking" comes in. Personally, I find the concept of "lurking" fascinating. One can learn so much through observation. A con to lurking, however, is that some people learn better by interacting with a topic beyond just passively listening. Le shrug. People 'gonna learn what/where/when/how people 'gonna learn. Lurking works for me.

Hi Marc-André. I included your video in a similar presentation I did as a faculty presentation. Unfortunately the thumbnail for my video is now an image from your video! - I apologise, I do not seem able to choose the thumbnail that is chosen. I did give you credit in my description. Hoping you are ok with this.

A PLN allows you to connect with other teachers worldwide and bring the world into your classroom. I look forward to connecting with teachers around the world to gain ideas about how to better infuse technology into the classroom.

I feel a bit confused as to the primary function of the PLN. Is it networking or professional development? If it is networking, is it a complement to LinkedIn, FB etc, or an aggregator? or just an education specific networking concept?

Hi Marc-André, I really this video. Would you mind if I used this as part of a presentation I am doing for classroom teachers about how to create a PLN. Let me know what you think.

I don’t know I had a PLN but the most of the Facebook users I follow are mathematician, so I have a PLN because I contact them to solve their problems and questions, also I share with them some of my youtube videos, then I have a PLN

I like to see what my Computer Science mentor uses as his support system. I also like to subscribe to the national ACM networking community, watch Ted Talks, and using Twitter. Belonging to national organizations in the computing field has helped me in teaching Computer Programming classes.
