    I found this series on the keel rebuild for Aurora by a goole search looking for keel repair. Congratulations on an extremely well presented, highly informative and very detailed presentation of the whole process. So nice that you also explained clearly why each step happens and what the intended result is for each step. I have just received a Moody 41 Deck Salon by road transport. Unfortunately the keel had to be removed for the transport and there was some unsightly and disturbing damage / delamitation in the area that the keel was removed (the keel was very difficult to remove and in desperation to get the boat loaded on time the company removing the keel had a go at it with a forklift pushing the keel from the side until it literally ripped the bolts out of the hull. This is what happens when the bonding paste around the bolts is not fully drilled out before removing the keel). We are now going ahead to repair following the exact process you have described and I now have peace of mind because I understand all the reasons for all the process and how they will ensure that my boat is as good as new if not better. Thank you and congratulation again. GEAT SERIES!

      You are more than welcome sir. That a shame about your boat, its a nice one. I'm sure it will be fine when it's all fixed up.

    • @michaelbeux1077
      @michaelbeux1077 ปีที่แล้ว

      She will be fine. I owe it to her. She is Hull Number 1 for the 41ds so she's also very special. Your videos changed my state of mind from downright depressed and worried and not seeing how we will ever get her back to new to excited as I now understand the process and what's important and now am excited to get started fixing her and put her in the water. She deserves the best and I will personally supervise all the steps. By the way, Patrick is a MASTER. Thank you again for an excellent series. I passed it on to my local boat builder and he embraced it and found it very good material and will follow the process as Patrick did. May you have many happy years sailing Aurora. People who don't love and respect boats, dogs, and their wives aren't people and I'd rather not meet them.

    I just found your channel. I have watched the entire repair series so far and plan to continue with all the rest of your content. But I have to comment how much I enjoyed and appreciate you sharing the repair process. What an amazing company! They really do such high quality work. The fact that they not only allow you to come on site, but also film their work during the process, and even help with some of the footage has blown my mind. In America this would never happen, to much liability.
    I also really love all the tips and techniques you shared. Such good info for us fellow sailors, especially newbies like myself. Thanks!

    Good too see her out in the sun again. Two items of input for you. I was told by our dealer the the factory anodes are made of some material that works both in freshwater and saltwater, and by doing so the “die” faster in salt. Not sure if they are the factory ones, but as others say, the are cheap to change, so definitely do that. Second thing, the gobious. I considered adding 2 additional sensors in ours, but my research told me that it uses quite a bit of power with one sensor, and adding more sensors would increase this almost linear. So I dropped the plan. Might not be an issue for you with your solar panels. Looking forward to more technical videos, these are the best 🙂

      Hi Peter, thanks very much. Sorry llate to get back to you but we have taken a little break, will post an update soon. As for the anodes, I changed them in the end just for peace of mind, they are not that expensive. Yes there are differences in the Anodes, I think we are using zinc, seems to work pretty well. Up here in Stockholm there is some salt but not that much. Really nice comment for you. Cheers, Chris

    • @lonelybay6694
      @lonelybay6694 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      disagree on that. we installed a new check valve after the first passage with high waves rolling from behind. the built in is not watertight enough if you want to keep your bilge dry! if you do not have a bilge sump the water will be all over the place and it’s very hard to find the source > and consider it will only happen in the worst weather:)

  • @wjhann4836
    @wjhann4836 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know how aggressive underwater growing is in the Baltic sea. We have a Bavaria in the Med - were it is growing while you are watching.
    Our Volvo saildrive seems to be similar to the Yanmar - both have a seawater inlet down at the drive.
    Our boat several times had problems with cooling since the tube going up the saildrive has vegetation inside limiting the cooling water flow especially at higher rpm. Sometimes after some 1 - 2 weeks of not using it.
    A guy from the harbor came with a big bottle of compressed air and pushed through that pipe.
    As you and me don't have such a device, I think of buying a tube brush (... for cleaning tubes and hoses) to have it in the boat if that happens. So if the cooling system has a problem, I can disconnect the hose from the saildrive and go through the valve and the tube with that brush.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great idea, a bit like a chimney sweeping device I guess. We don't have too much vegetation growing up here, I would like to clean the other pipes also though. Good information to know though, I guess it can be a really problem when you are sitting in a marina for some time. Cheers, Chris

    Aurora looks great and excited for the upcoming sailing season as I am sure both of you are.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Todd, thanks very much. Yup we are very much looking forward, not long now. She will go in the water 3rd of May, we will release an update soon.
      As for the hidden spaces, I have begun to realise this is just a fact of life when it comes to boat with a grid installed. I have been tempted to make some inspection holes but this will only weaken the structure. The toilet leak was fixed by putting sikaflex around the thread of the fitting, so that was pretty simple. The bow repairs have now been done again, that's just a pretty simple job with some epoxy resin, you can see that on the last episodes of the plastskador repair also. All in all she is pretty much 100% again. :) Cheers

      Hi, we are going to take Aurora out of the charter program. We just can't justify the risk vs reward. The only way we would consider it is to make a charter where there is a captain on board. @milesbuckhurst504 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great videos, very interesting. Anodes should not be effected by the power usage on board. If it is you need to check all the grounding. Anodes protect bare metals higher in the electrochemical series. My recommendation is to paint as much as you can of bare metals so the anode surface area ratio is much greater than the cathode. The anodes will then be even more effective. This is why your anodes on the prop will be offering themselves but not the hull anode. Your prop anode is fine for another year, probably not more. I have painted my particular prop and the anode lasts several years.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike much appreciated with the advice. This year I am not painting the prop as it's bronze and full of Copper, I will see how it goes. I changed the anodes in the end as it's not expensive to do. Cheers, Chris

    • @SailingAurora

      I have sanded the other anode down now also but thinking about it, it maybe just the way they are designed to work. Alot of the electrical connections are earthed around the engine, this might be the reason

  • @DJW007

    OK I agree that the check valve will stop the flow back of water that is in the hose between the top of the loop and the pump, but it also reduces the output capacity of the pump and that water stays in the hose possibly growing algae. As I understand it this is a Backup bilge pump and would only be uses in emergencies “You need full flow capacity”. From time to time it could be tested and any excess water in the bilge cleaned up, but because the pump is at the lowest point the hose would drain and remain dry.
    I still vote for a vented loop and no check valve, but the excess flow back can be a nuisance.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tips, I have been more or less thinking on the same lines. I looked at the vented valve also and I am thinking that if it causes without it, I will just add it in line at some point, it's an easy job. I will put the full installation into the videos soon. I just took a little break to do more work over the last couple of weeks. Thanks for the input, it's appreicated

      Hello there. Within the next couple of weeks I imagine. We have had to take a little break to get alot done before we splash her. I will post an update as soon as we can. Life is just a little manic at the moment.

    Is the rebuild cost more or less then what you have charged out for charter work?

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These damages were taken on the insurance so definitely we have come out on top. As for the heartache and loss of use, this is a different thing

    The anodes are probably the cheapest item to maintain 😂

    Oh my goodness Chris! Are you cheaping out on the anodes? For crying out loud man, you are out of the water, there is a little wear on the anodes, CHANGE THEM DAMN IT! Oh, I can do that in the water, sure, sure you can Chris and waste a day when you could be getting your sail on. Spend the $35 (US) now, and know your anodes are spot on.
    Kudos to Lewmar on the windows. I Noticed that Patrick looks so young for a man to have his skills.
    Chris you sailing channel started 2 years ago when you decided to buy a sailboat. The process of buying a new sailboat can be rather long. You had a chance to sail a very little bit. Decided to charter (whore out) you sailboat to help with the cost. Then the grounding, and repair. It is easy to forget that in the overall analysis your sailboat is brand new with only 3 months in the water. You will have some "bugs" that show up, happens with all new boats.
    Be happy, be safe.

      Haha Larry you are right with the anodes, I did change them a couple of weeks ago in the end. I wish our prices are like in the US though 😕. We are looking forward to this summer for sure and will try to do all the sailing we can. Thanks for the comment 👍

    What does "on the hard" really say? I understand it means the boat in on land but the real meaning of the words.

    Is it ok to screw down the floorboards? I was advised not to and valued that advice. Access to the hull might be very important.

      Good thinking, on the other hand when there is a load of water I would prefer than the floor boards were not floating around the boat. Plusses and minuses to both
