    Two points regarding the parasitic worm:
    - The reason why Laios got the parasite is because he ate it raw, which is the last thing anyone can do with harvested meat. No one touched it until it was actually cooked, which is the best way to eradicate any parasitic larvae that might still be in the meat.
    - The taste would probably be like eel, since the cooking method is based on Unagi, which is a dish of grilled eel covered and broiled in tare sauce.

      The creation and use of tools isn't an indication of humanity because real animals in the wild (including species of mammals, birds, fishes, insects, cephalopods) have been observed making and using tools to hunt, groom, fight, communicate etc.
      Also "demi-human" isn't a social concept in Dungeon Meshi, it's a biological reality !
      Demi-humans are cross races between a human race and an animal one and so far all confirmed demi-humans have been mammalian (which isn't the case for Merman / Fishmen).
      And Ogres (aka Oni) are biologically humans like Elves and Dwarves are, it's only Tall-Men who don't consider them human (probably due to racism and supremacist ideology).

    • @Vlad-t3f6q
      @Vlad-t3f6q 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@moorhsum9755 i mean, we know that at least on the island demihumans are counted as such if they have a different number of bones from humans, not specifically because of animal traits, its kinda of an arbitrary distinguisher that onis just so happen to not have. what really separates a fishman from a cobolt? a mammal mermaid from orcs? i dont think we have that much information to say whether they have their own languages and cultures and such.
      (i think its also pretty much established in-cannon that everyone in the cast has some concerning views on race, so it makes sense for them to not know)
      so still pretty iffy to eat
      in a world where there are potential sentient animals i would not eat a dolphin even if they May not be People

    • @moorhsum9755
      @moorhsum9755 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      @@Vlad-t3f6q
      If you can't eat sentient animals you should probably be vegan because all vertebrate species are sentient and that represents the majority of what we eat.
      If you meant "sapient", then sure, it's probably better to not eat that...but how does that relate to the topic of Fishmen ?
      Fishmen did not show proof of sapience. None of the monsters eaten by the group did.
      The topic was also never about the ethics of eating sapient animals - the only concern raised in the video is about the possibility that eating Fishmen = Cannibalism which would mean they are related to humans.
      We could debate more about whether there are real differences between demi-human races and human races but that won't answer the question of what Fishmen are.
      If we come to your answer, which is that "demi-human" is a social construct, it won't suddenly mean Fishmen are also related to humans, it will only makes us question how the previously recognized demi-human races should be categorized.
      So let's focus more on why Fishmen can't be related to humans rather than what a demi-human is.
      Let's analyze human and demi-human races and then compare them to the Fishmen. We can't only look at what the character say, we have to consider how Ryoko Kui designed each races.
      Human races include : Tall Men, Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Half-Foot and Ogres / Oni.
      They all have the same number of bones, limbs, organs, etc. The functioning of their biology is also very minimally differenciated. They can seemingly reproduce with each other, though there is concern over the fertility of mixed offsprings (however they're so rare and their growth is so unpredictable that it's impossible to verify if that's actually true).
      Frankly, we don't have to spend a lot of time here, they're humans, they're all mostly the same with a few tiny differences here and there.
      Officially recognized Demi-Humans includes : Orcs, Kobolds, Mermaids and Beast Men. They all share distinctive traits : humanoid bodies with mild biological differences (different number of bones, additional / lesser number of limbs), presence of animal traits (porcine, canine, feline, fish etc), mammalian reproduction and capacity (somewhat) for speech. All except the Mermaids have proven to be sapient.
      Fishmen obviously do not fit the requirements to be recognized as a human race (biology is completely different) but they also don't fit with the patterns established by the recognized demi-humans : they aren't mammalian and they don't have capacity for speech (complete lack of vocal cords).
      Of course, unless Ryoko Kui says it herself, we won't know a 100% what each races are but all of the evidence (including Laios' words) points towards Fishmen not being humain.

    • @Vlad-t3f6q
      @Vlad-t3f6q 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@moorhsum9755 i think we may be arguing past each other. 1) this was never really about wether something was cannibalism or not?
      2)my argument on demihumans IS shaky, but also i dont think the whole limbs and being mammalian thing is ever brought up in cannon, other than laios using it to argue that demihumans a very far removed biologically from humans (which i'm not arguing against, those very much are fish with thumbs)
      3) all that i was saying is that its dubious to eat fishmen, like, ethically?
      we will probably not agree on this one, cause its kinda a matter of interpretation and personal opinion
      i really would rather not get stuck on semantics all day, have a nice :)

    I have to disagree with a lot of your assessments, first of all, mandrake appears to be similar to gobō/edible burdock, which means that the vegetable kakiage would be more akin to diner style hashbrowns with other vegetables mixed in. Secondly, the living armour would be more similar to mussels or oysters than calamari. Thirdly, as some other people have pointed out, the sorbet was just chilled by the ghost and didnt include any ghost essence. Lastly, while I do agree with your assessment on the parasitic worm, I'm surprised you didn't mention how it's supposed to be similar to Japanese grilled eel/kabayaki, since that would make its real world counterpart much more appealing.

    If you want a more orange egg for visual variety, duck eggs might be the way you want to go.
    The freshly stewed vegetables from the Golem gardens is a tried and tested method. Pull them out of the water when done cooking, get better, and substitute a superior protein, and you'll have a great meal. Corned Beef is a particularly choice protein. And if you add grass fed Irish butter? MMMMM
    I can't say I've had good experiences with crab legs, but they were cheap buffet fare, so.... Also, lobster used to be easy to screw up and considered peasant food. Then superior cooking techniques for the sea roaches proliferated during WWII when cheap mass food was needed. And then Lobsters suffered a massive population dip and because food for the more well off.
    The Kelpy grilling seems a bit plain and underexplained for people who aren't experienced. Also maybe slightly overcooked. But in principle, grilling that many tasty looking cuts of meat has me hungry.
    The Undine Stew is quite possibly the second most creative meal in the first half after the living armor. Just... the idea that you take a water spirit and make it the base for your stew to restore mana is just brilliant.
    The Red Dragon pizza and steak is potentially the most tantalizing for the allure of dragon meat. Like, that is a feast available only for grand conquerors of dungeons or the most elite who can afford to hire said conquerors. The tail also looks nicely fatty, though I'd rather sear that instead of putting it in a soup.

    Personally imagined the mandrake as being somewhat starchy like a potato, just with a more herbal bitterness to it, so tbh the kakiage gave me the impression of a potato pancake 🤤 IDK what bat tastes like, but the giant bats don't resemble insectivorous bats, but fruit bats. The floor they live on also has an ample amount fruit from carnivorous plants, so I'm guessing it could taste similar to fruit bats irl.

    Something I noticed and really appreciate is what different dishes get made depending on who seems to be in charge? Laios seemingly has led two dishes, those being the barley with seafood (basically porridge) and the "fish and chips" style dish from later. And both seem much simpler and homier to him (presumably European) as opposed to Senshi's more complex tastes, etc

    I mean, the parasite shouldn't be more questionable than any other meat (arguably less so due to it's more controlled environment). It's nowhere near the right size/species to infect a human so Laios getting a second-order parasite from it is more down to really, really bad luck (/rule of funny).

    My thoughts:
    Giant Scorpion: Basically a less tasty lobster. Scorpions are eaten in some real- world cultures. While I haven't tried it myself, it's supposedly not much different from peeling a boiled crayfish, apart from removing the venomous stinger before cooking.
    Man- Eating Plants: In our world, most- if not all- carnivorous/parasitic plants are unedible, though sundew plants and mistletoes are sometimes used for medical purposes. The fruit of these fictional plants do resemble real- world tomatoes, paprikas, peas, and onions, so I suppose they're good enough to eat (though I do wonder why a plant that injects its seeds into one's skin would even need fruit to reproduce).
    Basilisk and Mandrake: As BreadHead said: Chicken and Eggs. Though the snake part could also be edible, as snakes are eaten in parts of China and Southeast Asia. According to a Finnish traveling show from the early 2000's called Madventures, snake meat resembles pike fish. As for the mandrakes, this plant (which does exist in real life, minus the screaming part) has been used for its medical properties for centuries, though I've never heard of it being used as food. Doubt it's even edible.
    Big Bat: Bats are used as food on some islands in the Pacific, as well as some remote locations of the Philippines and Indonesia. According to Madventures, the meat tastes like chicken, though the innards are pretty bad.
    Living Armor: Since these are molluscs living in rusty pieces of metal, I'd boil them first. It should kill all the bacteria and mold. If any mold remains, discard those. After that, the meat should be pretty good, no matter how you prepare it. Personally, I think deepfrying them after boiling would be perfect, also to make it more appealing for elves.
    Golem Garden Vegetables: Just vegetables. Nothing special.
    Freshly Picked Stewed Cabbage with Spicy Chicken and Stolen Bread: Once again, pretty basic. The bread may be spicy, but I don't mind spicy food. Also love how Senshi hypes up bread in this episode. That has to mean the bread is good, so I'll take your word for it!
    Treasure Bugs: First off, it's totally normal to want to sink your teeth in treasure. That's how people in the old days used to test whether gold coins were real or fake, as gold is soft. Second, Insects are a valuable source of protein to many people around the world, though most people either stir- fry or deepfry them. That's why I'd stir/deepfry the treasure bugs before eating, no matter how appealing they look raw. The only reason I'd eat literal treasure is if it was made of candy.
    Exorcism Sorbet: If the treasure bugs tasted like candy, this could be like any sorbet. But for all we know, this could taste like it was made from decaying corpses. We have no idea what ghosts would taste like, not to mention the moral dilemma of eating something that was once human or any other sentient being.
    Mimic: Basically a lobster/king crab. Same rules apply.
    Porridge: Pretty basic, in addition to the leftowers. Totally beats the traditional Finnish porridges I grew up with (except chocolate porridge).
    Parasitic worm: NOPE! Anything parasitic is a big no- no for me (with the exception of the parasite plant paprikas). No matter how good it tastes, I'm not eating anything that might cause a severe stomach- ache at best, or eat through my stomach like a xenomorph at worst! That's where I draw the line!
    Kelpie: Looks like a horse, and tastes like beef and pork? That's a definite must- try for me! Even if it was just horse meat, I'd still try it!
    Undine Stew With Tentacles and Kelpie: Basically elemental water, with horse meat that taste like beef and pork, with tentacles from some unknown creature living on the ceiling. In other words, A stew of beef/pork meat with squid. Sounds delicious!
    Tentacle Gnocchi/Pasta: Basically calamari pasta. Sounds delicious!
    Cutlets to Conquer the Red Dragon: Pretty much a royal meal the heroes need to fight the dragon. Anything goes IMO.
    Red Dragon Meal: I've never imagined eating a dragon (apart from a scene in the movie Quest for Camelot, where the main villain is served "dragon steak", and a recipe in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm which concists of four dragon flanks). But I'd imagine the meat being though, and resembling high- quality beef (like Black Angus). Though I have heard certain lizard species are hunted as food in some parts of the world, including Australia (mostly among the natives).

    Props to this show for making me wanna eat treasure-looking bugs.
    Since Chilchuk thinks they taste like fish, I could imagine that they may be very similar to soft-shelled crab. They have a crispy to crunchy exterior, but meaty on the inside. The chewy necklace I imagine would be like mochi or ricecake. The jewels probably taste like some sort of jam, they appear very candy-like.

    respect to the video using the actual monsters as a factor but i would do this based on real life dish equivalent as well
    That way you can get the real flavor instead of assumption the ingredients like how some people do(example being marcille)
    , i have eaten most of these in real life. like the treasure bugs can be simillar to kohakutou and chocolate candy coins. Fruit tart is quiche and even the tree root plant is similar to a real life plant. Obviously oyster are Armour and parasite is eel. So besides what monsters and such are to...i recommend if we do more of these rankings, to go flavor profile and dishes similar to it. I like cooking foods from fiction alot, especially from foodwars and cartoons so this show really made me hungry.

    16:20 this is a topic I don't typically like to talk about because people don't usually want to understand what it actually means, but I'll explain in short.
    No, it isn't cannibalism, it can't be considered cannibalism in any way because you have to be the exact same species or race for it to be cannibalism, a Tallman can eat an Elf and it won't be Cannibalism, a Wood Elf can eat a High Elf and it will not be cannibalism but only if both races of Elf originated from different evolution lines. Like Crocodile and Alligator as just an example of two creatures that won't be cannibals for eating each other.

    My list as a picky eater based purely on if I could eat it (sorry for typos im on my phone at 3am, lets go!):
    -scorpion hotpot: TRY/YES :this one seems promising, the scorpion seems p lobsters and the slime noodles seem like rice noodles so the odds of at least being able to eat that are decent! I will be touching nothing else in the pot.
    -fruit tart: MAYBE?TRY :probably a no, but if I picked out all the bits and just had the cake-esk part it could be... alright... possibly...?
    -basalisk: YES : litterally just chicken.
    -basalisk omelet: YES/CAVEAT : I could prob eat just the egg part, just cook up the egg part and it's prob fine. Like my brain might be mean about the snake egg aspect but it seems enough like egg powering through seems plausible.
    -kakiage: NO :bat and veg. No shot. And it's fried weird? Nope.
    -living armour: GOD NO :its fucking osters and shit! Hell! hell! Begone demon!
    -vegi boil: YES? : I.. could eat the carrots and potatoes I guess? That'd be fine?
    -stewed cabbage and spicy chicken: KINDA :I can eat the bread at least ;-;
    -treasure bug snacks: NO :no shot not a chance in your life am I ever gonna be bringing myself to eat bugs, no mater how aestetically mouthwatering they look in jam (which I also can't eat texturally) truly killing me with the sorbet they look so good but I just can't do it rip in pepperoni.
    -Boiled mimic: YES :lobster. First real meal in a hot minute.
    -boiled barley: KINDA : Mimics back on the menu boys! And nothing else :/
    -parasitic worm: NO :its slimy and gross!
    -kelpie grilled meat: TRY/YES :I mean, it's meat. There's a chance I don't like it but there's a higher chance I do. Not eating liver tho.
    -undine stew: TORN :on the one hand Kellie stew seems so, so good. And if it was just that and veg I'd be all over this. But the tentacles.... like I Def will not eat them and depending on the flavor they give the stew I may not eat it either. Very maybe.
    -tenticle pasta: MAYBE :Pasta may be my one great love but again! Tentacles! Of unknown flavor and texture! I am fear.
    -frog coutlets: YES :ah bread, the return of my savior! I could maybe also do the frog coutlets so long as it wasn't placed of the red wine tenticles. It's just like chicken right? Right? ;-;
    -dragon meat: YES :first time I've ever seen something I 100% beleive I'd try in real life no caveats. That is the most succulent red meat I've ever seen. Like it's def tough so idk how long that enjoyment would last, but it's so worth a try. And wrose case there's decent pizza on the right!
    Part 1: 9ish (pos 11) meals out of 17. So like, a bit over half? I'd survive at least!
    (the 3 meals made from treasure bugs were counted as 1. The shakey maybe meals or heavy caveats were tallied as 1/2 meals. The extra 2 pos meals were for the tenticles.)
