As a windows user there are actually 3 settings apps. The registry where you disable all of microsofts ads, the control panel where you can actually find useful settings, and the settings app, where you can get microsoft 365.

    • @MelodicTurtleMetal

I hate them all. MacOs is borderline useless for any real computing task, and 90% of what it does well can now be done equally well on phones. The remaining 10% can be done equally well on all OS.
Windows update really cripples windows, and it's need to download frameworks and such make it feel exhaustingly slow to do certain tasks - but then again those tasks are usually literally impossible on Mac and almost impossible on any Unix, so what can you do. Too much support is windows problem. All productive software is better on windows - arguing that is just projecting your windows hate.
Linux is great for that 10% that works fine on every OS, but every. single. thing. you want to install or get working is an absolute chore, that both MacOs and windows can achieve effortlessly. Linux as a desktop machine is a joke, and everybody pushing for it just wants attention, live in denial, and just want the 20 hours of their lives setting it up to be borderline useful.

Otherwise a nice thing about macOS is the relatively inexpensive price of lifetime licences to software like Logic Pro and Final Cut (which most people don’t even need since Garageband and iMovie are already pretty good), not to mention the preinstalled office suite. We Linux users choose when to do so (and all that rebooting does is apply any kernel-level changes) by simply typing “sudo apt update” then “sudo apt upgrade -y” and it only takes seconds and will be offered for the entire lifetime of your PC, with some 2011 ThinkPad users with Ubuntu still enjoying support thanks to the fact that they can run version 24.04. Whereas Windows updates are entirely tied to rebooting (or the inevitable crash) and can take several minutes, and Mac updates stop coming when your laptop is like 2 years old.

I choose Windows 11 over MacOS any day of the week. GNU/Linux is obviously preferable, but given a choice between Apple and Microsoft, Microsoft is the clear winner. Why? Three reasons come to mind:
    1) Window management is atrocious on MacOS.
    2) My Apple work computer doesn't have any USB ports (need a dongle).
    3) Apple hardware is subpar for its price range. Intel CPU + NVIDIA GPU is a much better combination for pretty much all use cases.
Battery life is great on MacOS, though, so I guess there's that...

The most intensive computing I ever do on a regular basis is protein folding and Apple hardware is pretty mid, I'd say.
I mean, don't get me wrong, the M2 has good performance w/ low power draw and some simulations need to use CPU, so it's useful work, but generally speaking, I can get the same performance with a GTX 1650 that costs like $150.
I just looked on Amazon and they're selling an MacBook Pro with an M2 processor and 8GB of RAM for $1,500. I'd rather pay a little bit more and get an RTX 4070 laptop. That's 10x performance!

The one and only problem is that a number of 2D and 3D professional graphics applications don't run properly (or at all) even in Wine emulator (and often running an old version brings problems of all kinds). For graphic professional use it is a problem . As much as I love Blender and Inkscape, it's not enough for compatibility with many professional workflows and clients. For running "solo", freelancers that can afford to only take certain kind of projects, doing your thing in graphics, I think you could do with Blender, Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus and a bunch of proprietary apps (stellar mention: Davinci Resolve) that have a Linux version, and are usually well maintained, but not for the other very common way of working, where a company or client asks you full compatibility with the latest Windows-only professional app (latest Photoshop, 3D Studio, etc), sadly.
That needs more than just regular mainstream users swapping. It needs companies swapping, all their complex workflows that they have consolidated through decades, custom apps around it, etc.
We might finally find a way, and now it is *A LOT* better than it was back in 2002 (Linux is immensely better, but also the apps... Blender was not the very high end 3D package that it is today). For now it is a problem to go Linux-only in these fields. Reason why many people keep dual booting. I have had even 4 OSes in the same machine, long ago.
There's also another problem that is neither Linux's fault. Drivers for specialized hardware. Colorimeters, certain printers, high end monitors, etc. For some reason, a number of hardware vendors don't produce Linux drivers or they don't maintain them too much.
These two problems eliminated, and I would not purchase a Windows license anymore, to only use whatever the Linux distro, like I did in the past. But until then it would always bring too many problems. If was only for mainstream use (I am barely a casual gamer, if at all, and steam games are enough) I'd have switched back to Linux a very long time ago.

The windows commercials for the surface studio and surface studio laptop with Pure Imagination, was pretty epic. As a person who has a foot in both doors, having been a long time Windows user who just a few months ago switched to a MacBook air, there are things to love about Mac OS and there are things that Windows definitely does better. Ultimately I switched because I got sick of the crashes with windows and I can say that Mac OS does seem to be a more stable operating system. I haven't had any problems, but I also can say that there are a lot of things I miss that Windows did right. The Windows management, the file explorer and the touch screens with a lot more optimized software for touch in particular are noteworthy and work really well and as a Windows user I actually really miss these things. And there are certainly a lot more gaming options for Windows than for Mac OS. But these opinions are my own based on what I value in a computer. Everyone has different uses for computers and everyone has different preferences. I don't think either are superior to the other, I just think that some people will find Mac OS to be more appealing for their needs just like some people will find Windows to be more appealing for their needs. It really depends on the user, which one is better.

I can still play older games on Windows. My Mac though a lot of my games will no longer run. Wherever it was a game back in the PowerPC/pre OSX days, or is no longer working because the program has been updated to only work on the M1 chip. They keep changing things so much it makes it hard to decide to get a new Mac or not because you don't know if some programs/games will work or not.
And yes I am aware Mac has not been really for gaming for years, but when I first got into Macs(and before I got better in dealing with windows), they were easier to use for me.
