I would recommend testing the AT&T device in different areas of your house and see where the fastest test is. Even if you have to run an Ethernet cable to an AP. It can make a worlds of signal difference when you are closer to a window, and your phone was only getting 250 down and 3 up, so it can't be expected that the AT&T Internet Air device will be much better. Maybe in the most northeast window of your house, you can give that a try.
Another thing is to try rotating the box. The antenna in the ATT box looks like it might partially be blocked by the electronics. Also it would be interesting to compare signal strengths in the 2 boxes. The ATT antenna looks like it might be bigger than the Verizon antenna resulting in a higher signal level. If so, then the Verizon box sacrificed a little speed and signal strength for looks.
I just got my at&t box , i got some good speeds , 605 download , 100 upload, compared to the verizon home internet , 200 download , 40 upload , both are by the window , it really depends where you live ,
Absolutely and most definitely depends on where you live .. att used to be the worst here where I live we literally only had dsl as an option few years later .. after Verizon @85/monthly shitty boost and mint mobile/tmobile now I have all my Apple devices connected via Apple with way better coverage! they put the USB port there for if you want to hook up your devices for charging or if something calls for an adaptation that has a USB that’s basically what they put that for so you can plug that USB into the back of your modem if you wish to..
Hi Jack great question! I'm enjoying the AT&T a bit more thanks to the faster upload speeds, and besides that, the experience is very similar to the Verizon 5G whereas it just works, and we don't have to think about it.
Your antenna-signal is PARMOUNT in terms of signal quality for Wireless home internet boxes. I am sure you have found that out by now. Get those things close to a window (without the blinds messing up any signal) or get a specific antenna made for 5G Home Internet, and you'll see an improvement over letting those things just sit on an interior table.
I haven't noticed much difference because I think I'm just getting close enough to the maximum speed already. I'm doing a experiment soon to see how fast we can really get things!
Highly recommend getting a ethernet cable and trying both. I have AT&T Fiber 1Gig and when I speedtest on my phone right next to router I only get 300 down and 300 up. If I speedtest on my laptop I get around 700 down and 700 up over wifi. If I speedtest on ethernet I get 940/940. I think the limitation comes a lot in the phone.

I’ve been using Internet Air for a month now. No installation is needed. You just plug in the router where you get the best the signal. They shipped it to me but I have the home version.
I would like to know how you were able to get the ATT one, to be able to use it in a rural area where you live? In my area, they say it is not available but we have access to 5g from ATT.
I was surprised we were able to get it. We live in between 2 cities - Everett and Lake Stevens. I spot we live is rural but we are minutes away from suburbia. I hope you can get service in your area soon.
Seems like the latency is generally higher on ATT. Not a big deal but if you care about online gaming having a ping up around 80 to 100ms is not going to work very well
Have Att internet air and I do not recommend it! Att told us to trade our old modem with internet air or they will turn off our old modem and we did. Spent a whole week trying to get the internet air modem setup with 10+ errors. When we got it setup, it showed that we have slower internet speeds than our old modem😢
Yikes! Sorry to hear about your experience. I recommend wired internet anywhere it works! I chose the 5G service because our only other option is Satellite Internet like Starlink. I hope you find something that works well for you, best of luck!
6:43 I don't like that the equipment shown the app animation had 2 additional ethernet ports than was on the equipment sent to the customer here. Also, never complain about hard wiring.
Near a window or facing the closest tower will improve your upload speeds, which is what you specifically need. Just from my cellular data on AT&T inside my home the upload is trash, around 1-5 mbps, but if I put my phone on the window it goes up to like 30 Mbps. That's because I'm on edge cell, and causes a major signal difference just being at the window
So ATT doesn't suggest placing this device in a window and then checking speed? Try searching for TH-camr "NaterTater". He has lots and lots of videos covering this whole cellular home internet "thing".
Why can't anyone follow the simply directions to scan the code? Just makes you look silly. We got the ATT Air and have 552Mbps down and 43.37Mbps up. We're about 2000 feet from the tower.
Yeah lol I would recommend just scanning the code, but I wanted to just hook it up and have it work. Those are great speeds! Thanks for the tower distance, I'm wondering how much of a different the distance from the tower makes.
Great question - the jury is still out on this one. I believe you are locked to the tower near your home, however, I would like to confirm this. I did attempt to travel with the Verizon in the camper van; we drove from Washington to Moab and Lake Tahoe, and it did work in other places with it was very slow, we were definitely not getting 5G speeds (or even 4G speeds for that matter).
AT&T employee here. In a training we had to do for this product. Supposedly you will get a notification if it’s too far away from the billing address and will not work until returned back within that address for it to work. However Ive had customers say they were able to take it to different locations with not much issues and the speeds varied depending on how far you are from the nearest tower It’s “technically” design to be in one place for optimal performance.
Watching this while hating AT&T so much right now. Worst ever customer service. But hey, use what internet you need. I love reviews like this. I've been looking to just go wired. Is that bizarre? Speaking of bizarre, the AT&T Cube, lol, why did they make it that way? Does it act as some sort of WiFi worship zone? It needs to glow in colors, lol.
Hopefully I don't need to go through Customer Service, especially since I was born with the natural gift of Impatience😂 I would always prefer to go Wired when it is an option, however where I live it is not available. But yeah, the All-Fi hub looks like a Shrine. I keep it in the cabinet below the TV and it's working fine in there, although I'm concerned about heat dissipation once summer hits. Stay tuned!
That's is actually great AT&T is 75-225mbps max on the label and when I talked to an agent max speed is 225 I'm debating from Spectrum 79.99 max 300mbps is it worth saving $25 🤔 upstairs I get 278mbps but I have a nighthawk netgear router which is over kill but works great no issues Spectrum loves Netgear Routers
I got a great deal only 39.99 for faster speed ultra 500mbps for entire year then goes up $10 every year and lowered cellphone bill to 39.99 saving $55🍻
I have a lot of devices and family comes over and uses wifi, my internet from Spectrum can handle that amount of loads but I do like the fact that att internet air is available at a cheap price and no price increase after 1 year I would get it if I didn't have a lot of devices connected to wifi and ethernet and I need it to get to my garage and outside yard area and wife does a lot of work from home.
Look into getting an external antenna. With some simple calibrations outside you can point it directly at the best tower and double to even quadruple your current speeds.
@@ConsumerTechJoe yeah it requires some disassembly of the router to tap into the antenna ports. But not hard to do and no soldering required. however, some of the newer tmobile routers actually include external antenna jacks so I'm guessing AT&T and Verizon later will adopt that on their new 5g modems.
Why did you test the AT&T Internet Air with the older outdated Verizon cube? They have a new one that's taller (rectangle) that is faster than the cube version.
Great question! It is dual-radio, so it uses both. By default it only has a single SSID that is shared, but I changed mine so that the 5G radio has it's own SSID so I don't have to get bogged down by my slower devices.
I would love to! Interestingly enough, although T-Mobile's headquarters based in Factoria not far from here, their 5G home internet service isn't currently offered where I live.
Vzw throttles the 5g to 150 Mbps on the $35 plan. But my VZW phone gets 400 Mbps from the same tower. That ATT box is hideous and huge. Also, I doubt the wifi range is as good as VZW. That 5g VZW box has tremendous wifi range.
@@ConsumerTechJoe that was with wifi. I have a separate router that I use for Ethernet connected to it for more ports I don’t get as fast of wifi speeds though through my router as I do straight from the hub
Yes, that's very likely. I've also noticed that other times of the week the internet will test way faster - closer to 330Mbps down. Thursday seems to be a busy internet day here.
After 3 months of use, the AT&T Internet Air is definitely faster for uploads and is *usually* faster for downloads, but seems to be more effected by network congestion. It gets a lot slower at peak times, like in the evenings.
You want to stay with Verizon and get you a outdoor antenna in outdoor leads to hook up to the Verizon box and you'll get your speeds that you're looking for
I can see on your test that the ping is below 100ms and is around 70! That’s impressive! Thanks for the great video pal! Does your test by any chance show what the MTU is?
Great question, Speedtest.net doesn't share the MTU size used in the test. The AT&T All-Fi is set to 1430 and can't be changed. Hope this info helps a little.
Ports for antennas would be nice, there are likely some ports on the inside you could tap into. Would you run a wire from the port to an antenna mounted outside on the roof?
why is US service so slow most of the time i see it? I'm in a little village in the uk and get 200mbit+ down 50-70mbit up on 5G, only a bit slower on the download on 4G (We're not using 5G for upload atm) and I know that's a slow site. I've had 800Mbit + speeds over 5G without mmWave and that was like 2 years ago
Yeah I'm not quite sure why. Rural internet speeds where we live aren't the best; in fact, even in most of the towns it isn't very fast. Glas you're seeing great speeds in the UK!
Because of size, there are 11 states which could fit the UK inside them and remember we have 50 states. Most of European countries are small compare to US size means, its very cheap to provide most of the country with 5g cellular towers or fiber internet wire that's 5g or fiber are cheaper and faster over there compare to US or Canada.
I understand the coverage issue, but the speed issue is totally different - unless you're running microwave backhaul, you'd be running fibre the vast majority of the time @@adamotak5145
It's just his exact location. The US has endless places that are now doing over 1 gig download and 100-200 upload over midband 5G on all carriers as long as you're close to the tower site and they have good fiber backhaul cranked up on the site as well. Ive hit 2 gbps on T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless on non-mmwave, and 1.2 gbps on AT&T
I am mortified w/ it 😩😩😩😩😵💫😵💫😵😵sick of it stating I live in Detroit when I live in Tennessee get their news etc., You should not have to find areas in your house for its best output switching like frrrfrrr
Yes, I think you're right! Where I live, fiber is currently not an option. The fastest internet we can get is 5G, and Starlink is too expensive where other things could still work.
Hi, great question. It could be several reasons - The signal could have trouble penetrating the walls of your home, try moving to near a window in the direction of the tower. Also, try moving it higher above the ground. Also, if you point the fast of the AllFi Hub towards the tower this will help as well. Ultimately though, sometimes slow speeds are a result of network congestion. Good luck with trying to improve your speed - be sure to post back here if you find something that helps.
Meanwhile stuck at 480p and buffering with the WiFi Egg. 5G has gotta be the absolute worst thing to happen. Once 5G came around LTE started acting worse.
Great question! I just logged into the modem to check, it has to be done manually and says "You should only update your device when instructed to do so by AT&T Customer Care." I assume that AT&T would have to email me the firmware file to update it.

Look into getting an external antenna. With some simple calibrations outside you can point it directly at the best tower and double to even quadruple your current speeds.
Whaaaat that sounds awesome! I'm looking into this 👍👍👍
@@ConsumerTechJoe yeah it requires some disassembly of the router to tap into the antenna ports. But not hard to do and no soldering required. however, some of the newer tmobile routers actually include external antenna jacks so I'm guessing AT&T and Verizon later will adopt that on their new 5g modems.
@@ConsumerTechJoe a quad mimo from waveform should do the trick
I got the ATT thing as soon as I opened it up, I put it back in the box and took it to UPS and sent it back didn’t even plug it in.
It was way to big
It is certainly huge.
Why did you test the AT&T Internet Air with the older outdated Verizon cube? They have a new one that's taller (rectangle) that is faster than the cube version.
Oh whoa I didn't know about the new one just tested the one that I had. I will look into this.. Thank you!
How is this for streaming online? Like Apple TV?
Great question! It's really great for streaming shows, and it's fast enough for streaming to several devices at the same time.
Is the Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz? My cameras and security requires 2.4.
Great question! It is dual-radio, so it uses both. By default it only has a single SSID that is shared, but I changed mine so that the 5G radio has it's own SSID so I don't have to get bogged down by my slower devices.
Great video Joe! It would be interesting to see you compare the AT&T Internet Air up against the TMobile solution.
That's crazy!
I have the same service(att) here in Grove City, Ohio… I’m getting 600 up and 25 down… has to be the location possibly
Whoa! Yes, that's pretty fast! Are you using Wifi or are you connected to the hub with an ethernet cable?
@@ConsumerTechJoe that was with wifi. I have a separate router that I use for Ethernet connected to it for more ports I don’t get as fast of wifi speeds though through my router as I do straight from the hub
Whenever you were testing those so close together, it caused WiFi interference, that’s why the Verizon cube was so slow.
Yes, that's very likely. I've also noticed that other times of the week the internet will test way faster - closer to 330Mbps down. Thursday seems to be a busy internet day here.
No your wrong we use wired cords for everything but moble devices because its faster and constant. Wifi is to slow
I'm going to test this theory out, and soon!
why don't we build these into our devices... why can't my TV have a built in Internet Air?
Great idea, that's probably next. Watches have it already.
So they both have the same speeds?
After 3 months of use, the AT&T Internet Air is definitely faster for uploads and is *usually* faster for downloads, but seems to be more effected by network congestion. It gets a lot slower at peak times, like in the evenings.
Mine looks different and looks like the xfinity hub rectangular
That's cool I want that one!
You want to stay with Verizon and get you a outdoor antenna in outdoor leads to hook up to the Verizon box and you'll get your speeds that you're looking for
Huh?
I can see on your test that the ping is below 100ms and is around 70! That’s impressive! Thanks for the great video pal! Does your test by any chance show what the MTU is?
Great question, Speedtest.net doesn't share the MTU size used in the test. The AT&T All-Fi is set to 1430 and can't be changed. Hope this info helps a little.
70 ms ping is horrible for a home Internet connection. Even for a cellular connection that's god awful
Having the two wifi signal sources so close together can be degrading both WiFi signals
No ports to hook up external antenna? Not good
Ports for antennas would be nice, there are likely some ports on the inside you could tap into.
Because in the us the media corporations that control the internet like to screw and control their customers
I would give 3/10 for At&T 5G hub design and 10/10 for Verizon Square Internet Hub. Case closed.
Honestly, 100% agree
i feel like this i the same power supply they use for the BGW 320 fiber ONT
Crazy, maybe they manufactured this for AT&T?
It doesnt have a coax port. So the ethernet does work well
have you tried starlink
No not yet, it's more expensive and I'm mostly getting the speed I need. Maybe someday?
T-Mobile headquarters is in Seattle. Why aren’t you testing T-Mobile?
The T-Mobile 5G Home Internet isn't offered where I live, but hopefully soon.
I could have switched to AT&T if they had supported for traveling. I can move to every state with my Verizon home internet.
I have 25 megs I need anything that is better then that for sure I just ordered this rn
Nice! Comment back and let us all know how it works for you.
I'll stay with my ATT Fiber.
Nice! I'm definitely envious!
I am mortified w/ it 😩😩😩😩😵💫😵💫😵😵sick of it stating I live in Detroit when I live in Tennessee get their news etc., You should not have to find areas in your house for its best output switching like frrrfrrr
the fact that it has a 10gig port is confusing AF. the 5G on it is never reaching anywhere near that. seems like a wasted port on a cell data product.
I agree, and with just a single 10gig work it negates using it for 10gig internal network traffic. It's weird
Real Test is how well does it go through walls and 2 story Condo's?
Probably as well as a cell phone would, which is to say, meh.
I got 302 on t mobile its very good
Awesome that's fast!
your using Wi-Fi to do test so that will slow down your speed try with the ethernet directly and my see if you get improvement
Great suggestion! Let's find out where the bottleneck is!
quite silly they don't include a few hours of backup power
I agree, wish they did! Could pair it with a UPS of course 😀
As large as it is you should be able to watch TV on it🤔😆
Haha right?!?!
The future is not wireless! The radio spectrum will always be a limitation. Fiber is the ting to go after.
Yes, I think you're right! Where I live, fiber is currently not an option. The fastest internet we can get is 5G, and Starlink is too expensive where other things could still work.
Wireless is the future how are you going to get internet too everyone?
Does the speed run out like what hotspot does
No, it doesn't run out, there is no cap on data for this service like there would be for a hotspot.
If you want faster speed place it near a window
I will try that next!
Is there data caps with this service?
That was my question, too! Allegedly, AT&T says there are no caps and no throttling with this service.
having a big egg that brings you wifi is so whimsical
It definitely is!!!
Might get some stickers make it look like frizzas space ship from DBZ
Yeah it might actually BE a spaceship, can't tell for sure.
Considering what you're using, those speeds aren't bad.
Yeah I really can't complain!
my upload is under 10 very slow I live near tower so why slow?
Hi, great question. It could be several reasons - The signal could have trouble penetrating the walls of your home, try moving to near a window in the direction of the tower. Also, try moving it higher above the ground. Also, if you point the fast of the AllFi Hub towards the tower this will help as well. Ultimately though, sometimes slow speeds are a result of network congestion. Good luck with trying to improve your speed - be sure to post back here if you find something that helps.
@@ConsumerTechJoe All of these are done right don't know why still don't work
Joe so damn fine 🥹😍😍 nice video sir
Awesome, great! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Have you tried T-Mobile internet? I get almost 100 on the upload.
NoI haven't yet, where is it offered? How much do you spend?
Meanwhile stuck at 480p and buffering with the WiFi Egg. 5G has gotta be the absolute worst thing to happen. Once 5G came around LTE started acting worse.
I wonder why that is, did they switch LTE towers over to 5G?
If you have a Verizon cell plan then the 5G internet is $35 a month, every month with no introductory hump.
Do you think At&t internet AIR device's Firmware is up to date?
Great question! I just logged into the modem to check, it has to be done manually and says "You should only update your device when instructed to do so by AT&T Customer Care." I assume that AT&T would have to email me the firmware file to update it.
@@ConsumerTechJoe Log In and go under each of of the settings menu and see if Software Update, or Firmware Update is evan an option.
My relative got the T-Mobile version and is getting 500+ consistently
Nice, that's fast! What state is that in?
@@ConsumerTechJoe LI/NY
looks like ping and jitter are much better on Verizon
Yeah and Verizon was more consistent overall.
My Verizon box works much better than Spectrum’s internet and it’s half the cost. I guess it depends on your location.
I think it's very location dependant. Where is Spectrum's service offered?
@@ConsumerTechJoe Spectrum covers the South East far as I’m aware. They use to be Time Warner. It’s always been subpar, but there’s been little competition until now.
I couldn't watch your video because of the background noise you added. What do you think it adds to your content? Many of us with misophonia can't tolerate the irritant. We can't hear both your voice and the background noise.
I'm sorry the video was hard to listen to, just in cast I did prepare the subtitles for folks that can benefit from them. I hope this helps 🤗
I don't know why AT&T Puts 2 ports, 1 Gbps, and 10 Gb for the LAN CABLE, even though the download speed is not more than 250 Mbps! :-) Funny, ha?
Maybe it supports mm Wave?
Yeah I'm not sure why they do that.
How did you get it to scan that blue freaking sticker so easily? It does not let me do it un fucking real.
I wish they had a better option.
Verizon Wireless Home internet in my rural area is giving 10.86 Download MBPS / 0.68 MBPS UPLOAD.!! lol
Yikes! I bet people don't stick around long for that. I hope you find something better soon!
Gonna add you to my hot sexy nerd pantheon. Hubba hubba 🤤 And great instructional video btw👍🏼
Happy to make the list! 🤣🤣🤣
The AT&T device is ugly and too big. They should have designed it as a cube similar to the Verizon device.
Yeah I totally agree!!!
had this hub for 4 months now and shouldnt need to say this but my upload speed has never reached over 5mb. not once have i got into a game and not seen ping issues. ATT is truly the wifi of all time.
It's different and unique
@@ConsumerTechJoewhy not get FiOS or fiber in general

Dude why is that AT&T device so ugly haha
Honestly, I don't know what they were thinking 😬
1:23 10GB port? 🤔
Yeah it's a 10GB port to plug into a router or straight into a computer that supports it.
Infelizmente precisamos ser francos e...que design ridículo esse do aparelho da AT&T. Realmente triste em achar que todos concordaram isso.
Si!
Concordo, é o Que é
I had the Hub for like 6 month's and it's totally garbage wifi connection and bandwidth. I only have a Xbox S connected to the Hub and I can't play my games or watch TH-cam with this bullshit 🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡💩
too much non sense zzzzz
Yeah, agreed.
Do NOT trade in your modem for this. They talked us into it & nothing but regrets. Promised faster internet & straight lied or mislead us. If it ain’t broke dont fix it so this means they are cutting back on something that will effect the quality & need your cooperation. It’s not about giving us better quality, it’s about helping them cutting back. Dont do it, we are now going with a whole new provider due to the trust breach now,
Thanks for sharing! Sorry about your bad experience. What service are you trying next?? Would love to hear!
So we have the Verizon cube and like it. How are you doing with the this new system?
If I could have fiber internet I would but the cube gives me good ping compared to my old crappy internet
65$ monthly?
I'm paying $55 monthly.
Att sucks , Verizon the best
I have had good luck with both companies so far, but if any issues come up with AT&T I will quickly switch back to Verizon.
so far my ATT works fine could be my location.
@@markrenton1093More than likely it is your location
Verizon is pretty bad too.
