I know I'm late to this party but a MAD-4L makes a great gause sniper. It's got full stealth capabilities and jumpjets. Mine has a Gause rifle in each arm, 4 tons of ammo, 2 Er large lasers on the right torso and a mk VI targeting comp, a light 300 engine with 2 internal DHSs and a jump jet in the CT it's still got weight for nearly maxed armor (I gave up 3 points on each leg). It's an amazing build that can sit near the back and snipe while using the ER larges to whittle down more armor and if you do get flanked it's got great armor and can brawl suprisingly effectively.
Ecm is good but stealth armour is not worth it in 99% of cases. In qp you rarely use a tc bigger then a tc1, and it has erppc HSL so gauss erppc is better then gauss erll on that mech.
You are thinking of a sniper as just the standard sniper in most fps games, in mwo mechs that work like that provide very little impact on a game compared to other options. In MWO the role of a sniper is not to get sneaky kills without being seen but is actually to use range and lots of firepower to take over the map for their team by walling parts of the map off from other mechs making it so that the enemies cannot move positions without taking lots of damage, while simultaneously being able to trade with other snipers to stop the enemy team from taking over the map. This means that that having lots of firepower and armour is way more useful then stealth and speed, while ecm is very good, it is just as good for any mech and is not necessary for snipers. and you do not need stealth armour. All this means that the best snipers are actually assaults, since they have the most firepower, and armour, so that they can trade and control the map the best. And it is not a waste of tonnage at all for an assault to snipe, this misconception is way too common. For some examples of some actually good snipers if someone reading this is unsure of what to run, gauss erll or hag erll night gyr h, gauss erll or hag erll dire wolf, gauss erppc marauder 4l, light gauss erppc king crab kaiju, gauss erll or hag erll stone rhino 1 or 2, hag erll marauder IIC D, erll stalker 5s. There are other really good snipers these are just some of the best. and assaults and heavies aren’t the only good snipers but they usually are the best. The problems With the builds in the video. Thanatos doesn’t have nearly enough firepower with only 2 gauss, and the stealth armour is fairly useless, the stealth Thanatos is a meme build. if you wanna snipe with the Thanatos do either 2 gauss and 2 erll with ecm but no stealth armour, or 2 light gauss and 2 erppc with ecm and no stealth. The problem With the light gauss phoenix hawk is that it is way too heavy of a load out. If you wanna snipe with a phoenix hawk run the 7S with masc 2 erppcs and 5 small lasers. The lppc Phoenix hawk is a good build but it is not a sniper.
If you want a stealth sniper, you can easily just do both PPCs and gauss on many assault mechs, the MAD-4L marauder II variant is a great example of this, with easy to handle double gauss and double ERPPCs. You draw a lot more attention with such a large mech, but 50 pinpoint damage pretty easily cripples or outright kills most mechs, with two shots being enough to threaten even assault side torsos. If you feel too vulnerable to lights, then I'd suggest something like the Black Lanner A or the Shadowcat B with much higher mobility that's more of a harass-sniper. You can also get decent sniping performance on a Cougar E/H or an Adder Prime using dual ERPPCs, but both of those mechs are quite squishy and the Adder has no access to ECM or jumpjets. Sniping mechs are pretty tricky in this game, since you tend to either lack damage or lack mobility on most of the extreme-range builds, and keeping track of enemy movements is crucial to avoid getting caught out by an opportunistic light/medium mech that hunts you down. EDIT: Also stealth armor sucks, especially for snipers. You're so far away that the ECM handles all the stealth for you anyway, so you're better served just bringing more heatsinks/a bigger engine/etc.
The only sniper build I've found that overcomes the lack of damage problem is my 4 erppc madcat. I average in the 800s with that build. Can never replicate that with gauss :[ I love da gauss T.T
I would avoid putting stealth on anything, its not worth it. One of the reasons the marauder II is so good is because it is really good against lights, 50 ppfld is usually really scary to a light.
You can add 2 erl to the thanny with a little work. That gives you another 18 damage on back shots or when you don't care if they know where it's coming from. I like 2 erppcs on the Phoenix hawk.
But then they can trace where the gauss came from. I run mine without stealth, just the ECM quirks and with x2 light ppcs - with a light engine. It averages around 600 damage per match but is really good at disrupting the enemy
@@ctakitimu 2 light ppcs is under powered, on the Thanatos it should be either 2 erppcs with light gauss or 2 erll with normal gauss. Also lppcs are mid range not long range, so if you are playing the mech properly you won't be able to use the lppcs most of the time.
Some seriously satisfying kills with both Mechs. Great vid. I don't have many friends to play with, so I'm always looking for good sniper solo builds. I'm gonna try the PH build.
Made me sad, when I realized for 3 years I've never had a unit or friends to drop with in MWO! Ah well, carry on. Hunchback GI is so much fun with x2 light gauss, they cycle at around 1.4 seconds with skills
dude, i've went 11 years. tried paying with a unit when faction play came out. didnt care for it much. didnt like some dude who thought he was a military genius telling me what to do with my mech, because i knew he wasnt either military, or a genius. so i ditched them
Definitely a fan of the Thanatos generally speaking. The sniper build you ran is popular in the game. Unfortunately you couldn't run when you could no longer hide. Speed and mobilty are part of any good sniper toolkit. Bigger engine in the Thanny with more weight friendly weapons. ER Large is a good long range poker and weighs 1/3 what the GR weighs.
No, that is the opposite of the problem with the build, the issue is that it is under powered. it is a heavy mech not a light mech, don't try to make it fast enough to outrun lights, give it enough power to kill the lights, and to actually be a good sniper, my sniping raven has the same loadout, please don't put a light mechs loadout on a 75 ton heavy mech. should either be 2 gauss 2 erll or 2 light gauss and 2 erppcs. One of the best snipers in the game is the direwolf with gauss erll, which goes only 48.6kph.
Been a bit, but I like using the hbk-iiC with Gauss rifles. No jump jets, but nice weapon mounts and decent speed. I can’t seem to get the hang of stealth sniping, I feel I’m much more effective when informed of weak points.
Advanced targetting in the skill tree. Only needs a 1 point investment but its only worth it if you absolutely are sitting on the other side of the map, since it really limits your ability to react to things happening outside of your FOV
1st off thx for the video review, nobody is doing this content anymore. how can these be a great sniper choices, none of them are clan???? Thanatos isn't fast. XL engines are a liability on IS mechs. PH mech in 1st match was red, cored and lucky. I would have gone with the SunSpider SNS-D. They just fixed the quirks on this and with ECM and skilled out this is a very viable option. no issues with XL engines or ammo explosions. Night Gyr would work too but it's too squishy. I do a lot of sniping in my shadow cat and Cougar
