- So you want to learn how to paint a fishing reel? Have you always thought to yourself, “Man, I hate nearly every color fishing reels come in?” or, “Why is every fishing reel either black or gray”? If you’re like me, then you too wonder why the world of fishing and fishing reels, especially baitcasters, is such a monochrome one. Black, gray, and white. Maybe a little silver trim here and there. That is pretty much the extent of most fishing reels I could find on Amazon Prime or eBay.
In this video I show you how to take it apart, how to prepare it for painting, what to use, and how to put it back together. This will produce a long lasting paint job on a baitcaster for cheap! Like I said in the video, I probably wouldn't do this to an expensive reel. The reel I used as a base is a 6:3:1 reel i got for $9(currently $13) on amazon.

How about painting metal bodied reels like abu Garcia 6500? I want to completely remove the existing paint

It does not! At least it's not advertised as such. I'd still be careful about storing it in the sun

Give it a shot! Be sure to let the paint cure well enough before handling!

How well is the paint holding up?
Still holding up well! I actually use it in a current video. To note though, in the next painting video I made I did not use a clear coat. Its less durable but feels better in your hands!
Fishing After 5 I have a old school Shimano core that a friend give me but it needs to be repainted for sure.. can you send me everything I need so I can get started on it.. what about sand paper do you know what kind I need...

They are not! I did my best to not get any paint near any moving parts using a... thorough... taping job! I still use the reels for fun weekly, actually
