Lots of respect for all the disciplines you rely on, Jeff. I've been an engineer on state of-the art high tech tools and instrumentation (diagnostics, fabrication) for 30 years and I've had to learn just about every discipline in the process. It's amazing how involved each discipline can be if you're good at it. When you have to combine all these skillsets in one job, with only one person, it's almost mental saturation. So again, respect for how you keep packing that understanding in and learning more and more about these complex disciplines.
I'm in the process of building my own home myself. When designing the bedroom I built the laundry room next to my walk-in closet and separated the 2 with pocket doors. My wife is very happy.
I've literally been doing this during the summer this year! I'm almost done. We are so excited. Bringing the machines up from the basement!

This is a very much needed video for my project. My laundry room is right behind my pantry shelves and by moving the laundry to another location, possibly basement, I can have a nice big walk in pantry.

Those Saniflo pumps are lifesavers *in the right situation*. As someone that has had to troubleshoot and replace parts inside of one, it is worth quite a bit of money, trouble and time to avoid using them. Worst thing (emptying the Saniflow) I have ever done in my life.

Been watching this dude for yrs as renovate my home. Helped me out countless times. Other channels are good too but this guy is from a climate similar to mine. Building a deck in Northern Ontario is so much different than Texas for example. On top of that hes likeable. Even with the odd cheesy joke. Lol

Even tho you left out the fact you did all that electrical work forgetting you said you were going to fur out the wall so all those boxes will need to be remounted and wire lengths adjusted! 😎
Thanks for the video @homerenovisiondiy. I'm enclosing or covered breezeway and converting it to a laundry room. Luckily all I have to do is flip everything from the garage side to the new laundry room side.
Minor recommendation, remove the price stickers from the plumbing if it is at any connection. While rare, it can interfere with the solvent making a water-tight bond.
Washer hookups should have been put on left and dryer vent on right. Reason is that front load washers are all left-hinged and non-reversible. This won't matter for a top load washer, but it is a big mistake if homeowner wants a front load.

Measuring, in theory, is so easy. Measuring in practice is the most difficult thing you'll do.
that is why i like to work with the idea of having room to adjust on the fly.
I was using the pinch rings for quite some time however I never realized the problem will but I don't use those no more I actually use PEXA with the expander
How long after did the stainless steel pinch crimps failed ? Just installed a new line for washing machine and used those vs the copper rings.

Man, I'm happy to live in Europe (Netherlands to be exact). Our code is so much better / easier while at the same time safer. We put our wire in a pvc pipe and we're done. Anything is prepared for 16A (230V) breakers so I can unplug my dryer and misuse the plug for my phone charger.
Making my trade and all the trade look so easy. Just like its another thusday ! Great video !
New code is 2 inch for laundry drain
Jeff, since you opened up the ceiling, why not run the wire through the joists instead of tacked under them? You seem to have room now to drill the holes. Would prevent you from having to build a box.

In the city...I live outside in the country...where I live you must use copper for water...no pex allowed. If you use a metal electric box all electric wiring has to be inside conduit. On sewage/drainage you have to run a vent line up and out of either the attic or thru the roof...cheater air valves not allowed. Yeah. They're sticklers to things is outrageous. In the country out here...no building codes or inspectors to deal with. I still follow the old rules...do it right even if it costs more. I also still do all my electric boxes out of the thicker blue or black plastic except a junction box which is metal, with the little black plastic nut end things that when you tighten presses down against the wire stuck in the holes my wires come in thru, wires soldered, wire nuts on the ends, wrap a little tape, and covered...just to be sure. PVC for cold water, CPVC for hot.
edit...forgot to mention in the city they don't allow wall plugs and switches to use the cheater push in holes. You have to wrap the screw, and the 3rd ground has to be up...don't know why because it doesn't really matter. And no 14 gauge wiring allowed. 12 gauge is minimum on 10 to 15 amp circuits, 10 for 20 to 25 amp, 8 on 30 amp...literally 1 step larger for each. Yep. They are weird.
Why didn't you use 2" for the drain out the box? Most codes require it, and that is why the box is made for a 2" pvc glue connection.

ran plenty of plumbing in last 10 years, never had a problem with pinch clamps.
Just bought my first home. It needs a lot of tlc (built in 1948, has had minor upgrades but nothing major) and this is first on the list. My washer is against one wall and my dryer is up against another. Very inconvenient. I have a decent sized laundry room for the size of the house, hoping to get this don't asap and free up some space.

You applied solvent right on top of the barcode label on that coupling.

I would wrap the strapping around the waste drain pipe for better stability.
I use C-spanners for the 1/2” and 3/4” box fittings (Canadian tire sells them). Piece of cake to tighten them without having to use a hammer and punch.

Here code for washer drains is 2” minimum.
Careful, Ontario building code doesn't usually allow ABS pipe to be used under pressure, which in this case would be! An often missed requirement. Even sump pumps I inspect always have ABS piping, admittedly I never blinked an eye until it was brought up with coworkers.

2” P-trap - 6 to 18 inches from the ground. Stand pipe 18-24 inches from the ptrap.
Ptrap at least 2*pipe diameter up to 5’ to the vent, depending on vent diameter.
Slope no more than 4 “ to 1’.
I really don’t think gluing and cutting is the hard part of plumbing. It is making sure that your doing it to code and choosing the connections.
@21:54 - You are not allowed to use a aav for a pump system. (I think you’re running a separate vent for the pump though.) Aav should not be buried in wall at least needs an access panel, best to put it right under the sink.
@23:45 - Most pumps require the circuit be a dedicated run from the panel (should be mentioned so people don’t screw this up)
@28:51 - Staple every 5 ft not required where drywall is already installed.
@44:21 - should have the specs in pump spec sheet , the The Saniflo 0.3 HP gray water pump requires a 15A 120V GFCI protected circuit. You should not be suggesting people use 14-2 for 240v systems. Only 15 amp 120v!

@@TwilightxKnight13 yes, basically what I learned is that the p-trap has a height requirement that it has to be installed above the floor level, and that it must be between 6-18 inches above the floor. The standpipe itself (after the joint of the p-trap) needs to be between 18-42 inches. If the stand pipe is too long, I learned that the drainage can cause excess sloughing of drainage out of the P-trap resulting in an inneffecive water seal. If it's too short, you could overflow your drain line. In my state, it is a requirement that all drain lines for washing machines are now 2" diameter.

Code is max 1/2 in under CEC of sheathing in the device box, and 6 inches of wire
Hi Jeff. In the UK the majority of DWV is outside of the home, attached to the side of the house. either cast Iron (old) or PVC (new). Plus We don't have the risk of freezing in the discharge pipes as our temps don't hit the same as we have in The Great White North. Most places don't allow ABS as it was made from recycled crap and subject to UV light. In our Province in Canada you cannot use PVC (Go figure?!) as the code is outdated. And electrical is 220v in the UK so getting zapped really hurts a lot more, don't ask me how I know this :-) just trust me. I can tell the tale if you really wanna know? Personally, I like having the 110v system in North America, with the advent of LED lights and low voltage electronic devices the lights no longer dim every time your run the kettle and the TV during Stanley Cup advertising break.
Canada, a country based on Metric which sells lumber in feet and Diesel in liters. As opposed to the UK which was until recently part of the European Trade Union that sells lumber in mm (but everyone knows what you are asking for) and diesel in Gallons....
Not sure how i get my measurements wrong... then proceeds to count out wire at 4', 12', 16'... haha. Love it.
Jeff! You can glue in a 2"x1-1/2" abs bushing into the bottom of the dryer box using PVC/ABS transition glue. Makes it much more secure! Cheers
I actually had to change it out to a 2" line to meet the new code. always learning.
And it fits right into the bottom of the box and gives a real nice finish.

So am I correct to say that the laundry drain is now required to be 2" but the venting is still 1-1/2"?
How could that pass inspection if your standpipe is over 24" tall?
Could you add the p trap of the washing machine into the main stack clean out drain?

I noticed the reducer had a bar code label on it. And then you brushed the solvent around that reducer including over the label. Does the solvent work with the paper label between the fittings?

yup. The label is actually plastic and melts.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY It did occur to me that manufacturers would not expect plumbers to have to peal off labels the put where you brush on the solvent. I'm learning a lot for your videos even though I don't always have an immediate need. Thanks. And don't get electrocuted.
Maybe it melts with the solvent but it still bothers me that it's in the way so I remove it first

Jeffs the kinda guy that would like split neutrals *each phase uses 1 neutral instead of 2. It saves money on wire, just can't use it with in panel GFCI's.

I'm already wishing you'd started by telling us where in the building this is located (middle of building or outside wall? Near existing plumbing?). We need to work from birds eye view down to the details.
If you watched all the videos regarding the shower he just built you'd recognize this as the back of the wall he just built when he installed his shower pan and pex.
We appear to be looking at the back side of drywall rather than sheathing, and there's no insulation or vapor barrier, so I'd assume that it's an interior wall.

Thanks for this informational video. I have question. I have one drain that I want to use for a kitchen sink and a clothes washer. I know it isn't recommended to have both on same drain, but how can I make this work. I have 2 inch pipe that runs approximately 2 or 3 feet then branches off to a 3 inch abs pipe.

How do I move the laundry without the saniflow and how long and how far would I have to dig?
I wonder why isn't standard do have a floor drain in every room where there are water supply. Specially Laundry, but i'm also thinking nearby a toilet, kitchen sink, any area where it's common to have water disaster. It would save all of them, wouldn't it?

put the washer in a pan with a drain so if the pump breaks...your all good. Cheers!
You comment about water in the vent and cure it without finding a cause by adding too much slope.. Water in the pipe is not bad unless it can statically collect more than a 1/4" which means it is not using steady gravity. Too much and it can siphon a p trap. Even heavy winds can make a vent pipe evaporate a p trap on unused sink in a week or three.

I really want to move my laundry from the interior wall of the basement to external wall of the basement.
Jeff, I have asked this before, but cannot seem to find an answer. Do you use ABS vs PVC because of personal preference or local code? If personal preference, why do you prefer ABS?

This was interesting. But. Code dictates 2" PVC pipe for the drain for the washer. Also, the trap needs to be between 20 to 36 " Thats US code. The whole setup cant resemble a s trap. Which me its got to be a p trap. Also the length must be at least twice the dimeter in inches to the drain.
