    Resident Evil 8 is one of the greatest games ever made, and Capcom has given us a rare look under the hood at how the sausage is manufactured. Games I've worked on -
    Fortnite (Environment concept art)
    Overwatch (Environment concept art + Sprays artwork)

    Man I would love to see a video like this on Dishonored 2 concept art! Absolutely my favorite concept art. From what I have seen in the Art Of book, it all looks very oil painted in style. They definitely used 3D (especially for cutouts/cutaways) but I'd guess much of it was hand painted over 3D (or over a sketch they made on top of the 3D).

    As a starter, i didnt know people used photo bashing this much, and got depressed everytime i saw photorealistic pantings, cause i thought that they were all hand made maybe by a team of 20 drawers.
    Mh... i'll be waiting for the next video like this one.

    One of the reasons I absolutely adore Resident Evil games is the collectables and unlockables - be it models or concept art. I spent FAR too much time unlocking everything in these damn games, then buying up the art books on top. Resi 5 was a mess of concept art and I still can't get over how great it was.

    Wow, I did not think that you were going to analyse such a bunch of concept art! :o
    It is really educational though! I had a mentorship before and was crushed when I asked my mentor how the Bloodborn concept art was made - with examples - and the photobashing techniques he showed me shocked me a little bit. Like, I always thought that EVERYTHING in art books was hand painted.
    I have a question btw - in animation, there are painters that mainly focus on color keys. Is that a thing in videogames, too?
    It would be great if you would do that for other artbooks/concept arts again sometime! :)

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The color keys usually fall under the concept artists role from what I’ve seen. But maybe it’s changed.

    Awesome video. I know you were saying you were surprised they released the Lady Dimitrescu image, I seen a reference photo of her a few weeks ago on twitter. If you search her name and reference photo you should be able to find it. Idk if they did use it or not, but it is almost 1:1. Definitely looks photobashed, liquified, and painted over.
    Figured it would be cool to know :)

  • @RossCastro
    @RossCastro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I always find it really funny to see the small little misunderstandings about real world locations. Like the how the RE7 concept artists initially put windmills in their concepts but the art director had to write out notes explaining that European styled windmills don't really fit in Louisiana. It's kind of like how in the original RE2 the streets of the Raccoon City are incredibly narrow like how streets would be like in Japan. It ends up making RE2 Raccoon City appear like a mix between an American and Japanese town.
    I believe I read in an interview about a similar thing that happened where they initially did the concepts for the convenient store/gas station at the beginning of the RE2 Remake and they purposely made it really compact and small because that's how convenient stores tend to be like in Japan and the more cramped environment seemed more creepy. Of course, the Art Director explained that unlike Japan, American convenient stores and gas stations tend to be much, much bigger in comparison so they ended up reworking their concepts.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of that comes out AFTER the first concepts. So the artists have to repaint them or modify them. What they DONT show is all of the "cut" concepts that didn't get approved. This is a very limited list of images.

    Hi! I am currently writing a research about concept art and concept artists and I need some answers. And I thought you might know? I can't find actual answers for my questions and maybe some of you could help me? I would be so grateful.
    1. Do concept artists get credit for their work? I have understood that their work doesn't show as the final result but they are an important part of the process.
    2. How can they be noticed by the public? In case they made a videogame for example.
    3. How concept artists assimilate that their work will not be shown in the final product? I am genuinely interested in their/your thoughts on this matter, I'm asking respectfully ^^, thank you in advance.

    • @Red_Dun
      @Red_Dun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not a concept artist, so I don't have any insights, but I can tell you (because i want to study gaming design and therefor i did "a little bit" of research) that since concept artist sell their art to the studio, they don't own it anymore and don't have any right to claim it for credit, however in almost every game they list the names of the team in the credits and if the game has a wikipedia article or some other kind of website they usually also get listed on there.

    • @torrentthom4734
      @torrentthom4734 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      I worked on several games, marketing/localization/community support.
      1. Most times artists have their name displayed under their artwork. Since many concepts do not see the light of day, only the more developed works will be made available through promo/art-books/in-game art gallery. If an artist designed a main character(s) there's a good chance his/her art will be displayed to the public. Many works do not get shown, but are still integral part of the overall game design/feel, for ex: UI elements, items, icons etc.
      2. ArtStation portfolio/their own website/YT channel/Socials, or link to any published stuff they may have.
      3. They can't. If you are starting and are not working on main promo/splash-page pieces your work most likely will never see the light of day. You do not get to dictate what is used/shown/promoted. It's best to always work on your own portfolio of original works to show to the public through #2 answer^
      Regards.

      Japanese game dev concept artists are usually employed for life. (assuming the company is successful)They don't need a portfolio. The idea that you have to always be selling yourself is more of a western thing because we change jobs so frequently and companies let people go if they need to save money. Thats less common in japan.

      The only way he could've spoiled you was through the thumbnail and he didn't. You saw the title and clicked on it. I don't know why you would if you haven't beat the game yet.

    I do not enjoy looking at photo-bashed images, but it's clear as day that this will be the standard soon, as more AAA games are approaching realism. This will be the death of imaginative game/world design, and industrial grade conveyor-belt art will be the norm. Best to move onto comics/Indies. What say you, Trent?

      the pipeline for concept art for 3d models in this kind of games with thousands of characters is different as other kinds of work, in some studios, the concept artist works closely with the modeler and texture artist, the 3d guys need more the texture reference, the brushes and the tex and "mood" than the idea itself, cause the characters and the props are already modeled, or are based in things in their archives. Many images seem paint-overs, that are not the same as photobash, means that a character base is already modeled, and the art director needs to see versions or changes to approve it.

      @@marinamunoz7117 I don't mind paint overs or finding quick tricks to solve technical answers for the art sake of the game... I mind calling a more like archive of art decisions and "making of" art decisions as an Art book. It is not ok to not allow the artist to refine and illustrate the final decided concepts for the Art book that would be published in his or her name. Look for how the illustrative credits of the Mandalorian gives depth and clear inspiration to every scene of the show even when the characters are already as 3D models and painted over mostly.

    Thank you for this. I would be beating myself to render things for hours and would not know you can just photo bash.
