Thank you! I was just studying edges today for my painting course and having a hard time understainding firm edges specially. Your explanation is perfect as always!
Just had to say that this was a kind of eyeopener to me. You've got a talent to compress solid knowledge into 20 minutes of highly informative education. Coming from a linedrawing background and struggling with a painterly approach this was a great lesson to me - I now realize how I can transcend techniques and ideas from linedrawing to painting. Thanks and chapeau!
Man I can really relate to your comment. I come from a more comic-manga background where the line is the main tool but I also happen to love the painterly style and Marco just put into really understandable words the thing that I was never been able to comprehend about paintings. Even though i knew the terminology of edges I never understood the intentionally behind them neither the brush choice criteria
This! Sometimes Marco will say something small that's such a massive eyeopener. Personally, the idea of doing master studies specifically for things like edges and values blew me away, mostly because I spent many years of my artistic development in an environment where photographic references were the only permitted ones. I have always struggled with sliding into photorealism or no longer enjoying painting at all. It was instantly so obvious why when Marco suggested master studies before photo references... Thank goodness for youtube creative content creators!
This video was a revelation to me. I struggled for so long to understand what exactly speedpainters are doing and all my art colleagues didn't want to help or show me how it was done, because they were afraid someone else could steal their jobs. Guys like you deserve a crown to share important knowledge like that!
Yeah, I've actually never painted that much in all of my life, so it's quite still a mystery how most artists are able to make the colors magically look realistic. I didn't really know anyone who could explain these things to me, but this channel really helps a lot!
When I try ‘hidden object’ games, they usually drive me crazy because most often there are only hard edges through the entire image you are searching. Thanks Marco for all of the wonderful insights!
The more of your videos I watch, the more I realise I how much I need to learn. I’ve always thought I was alright at drawing because I can draw a cat and it looks like a cat. Didn’t realise how much of a balancing act art is. Really looking forward to trying this out. Thanks so much for the videos. Happily watching them all, awed by your paintings and can’t wait to improve.
You know this video has made me feel so much better about painting. Honestly, its so hard for me to paint usually because we always talk about detail and adding in more and more detail. The thought that you can loose some of that detail where it isn't important and still come up with something good and reassuring. Its the hardest part of landscapes for me cuz I think everything has to be hyper detailed and perfect and I overwork everything. Thank you.
Over the past two years I’ve been drawing a 200 page graphic novel. During those two years of working in ink on paper, I’ve been watching your videos over and over. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had those “Eureka” moments that made so many concepts that were so perplexing to me just click. Even though I’ve been working in black and white for two years, I’ve learned more about color/painting/digital painting from your videos than in the last 10 years I’ve been making comics. Just wanted to say thanks.
I’m late to this video, but thank you for explaining the edges. I could only be dazed seeing artist drawing backgrounds that look so real, yet simple when you zoom in, never realizing they apply edges. With this knowledge I can finally step up my work
ah, this was a great video! i really like how you had a solid and actual beginners exercise. i find a lot of great videos about different art principles but theyre are always geared towards such insane experienced applications that i never actually get to properly use whatever concept they were showing in the video
Man. You. Are. A. God. This is so clear and concise. And - taking into account that I'm not a native speaker - I don't even need subtitles to understand what you're saying. This is amazing.
Marco, I, and I'm sure others, really appreciate your clear, concise articulation and instruction. So fun to watch your skill then try some of your exercises. Also, your advanced video production skills haven't gone unnoticed!
Yeah. I think Schmid said something in his book about edges being the thing that still occupies his mind, 60 years into painting. Something along those lines. They're endless.
I really love the way you paint that small, textured detail atop your painting. It makes me think it’s just been raining and I’m looking out at the city from a window with a few raindrops, scratches, etc, on it that are super in focus with the background being a little less defined and it’s so beautiful, I reallllyyy love it and the feeling it creates,
Wow, this was so interesting to watch! Thank you for this video. I feel I learnt so much new things, even though I've got so many years of art academy in the pocket.
Thanks for this! I've always struggled with this issue... making everything too blurry, getting overwhelmed with how pick the details, and being too scared that hard edges will look weird. I also liked that you gave examples of practical exercises to do for different skill levels. Also, beautiful paintings!!
wow i've never understood what was wrong with half my paintings until now.. i knew it was the edges but couldn't formulate it properly in my mind what was throwing me off and how to fix it. thank you sir, i am grateful for this video.
I thought you were going to discuss DOF but you went into a more important aspect. Yes. There is science behind how much detail we can actually see in any one moment. And it’s actually pretty small. You are really good. I’m enjoying your videos v much
Wow, that explains a lot! I've always wondered why soft edges look so appealing in some contexts, but in others it's a disgrace. This knowledge is a game changer for me, and i will be forever grateful s2
Loved this video Marco. I'm an architect from Mumbai,India. This video enhance my art appreciation ability to a new level. I can enjoy painting which I have seen many times once again with the concept of edges. Thank you again.
Is it a way to objectify the artist to make it understandable to the masses or is it a graphical education of understanding the colors and forms made by artists? Can you do with abstract art as well or only traditional paintings and photography?
You’re one the besttttt one I’ve come across on youtube, I’m learning so much from you as a beginner..please keep on making more tutorials for beginners. Many thanks!
I enjoy watching a lot of youtube artist videos but your channel is the only one I want to be notified about. Your videos are so good and inspiring! And your teaching skills are first rate. Combine all that with your awesome talent and skill and ... wow! Thank you for making these videos.
My quest for exact method of those edges has finally over..... I used to understand the principle but not this clearly.... This video is so educational and knowledgeable..... The foundation of making a good cityscape is right here in this video..... i cant thank enough🙏🙏👏👏🙌👍🤟
I love this type of study. As I continue to paint , I hope to get a variety of edges and also texture. This is what I am after when watercolor painting. Thank you! You are certainly thinking like an artist and painter!
What a great video! I have phased in and out of painting and drawing thoughout my life so not striving to be a painter or so, but this video teached me to simply look at art in a very new light! Thank you so much!
You are the best instructor in art I have ever seen so far. Thank you for everything, you really inspired me to get back at drawing & creating with a different thinking. For almost 2 years now I am reviewing the old masters paintings trying to train my eyes and learn from them and study more about human visual perception. Everything you said is true because our eyes detect edges first because they are selectively sensitive to discontinuity & high contrast rather than soft edges. Thank you very much for this amazing content.
Thank you so much for your work! I just wanted to say, i made so much progress in painting and finally understood some stuff about shapes, colors and values that i kept hearing about, but could never quite wrap my head around... all because of your channel! you are so good at explaining
that video man really openned my eyes on painting. I'm a digital artist mainly and I felt like I spent too much time on paintings and it's because I define everything too much. Using edges seems obvious yet I never thought of that. Not really. Lately I started (with the painting i'm litterally doing right now that I paused to write this comment) to use softers edge and define less the background but all the tips you gave will really help me. Thank you so much :)
Thankyou very much Marco! I just started learning painting and this topic really helped a lot, all of your videos are so helpful and I'm inspired by every art you produce as it resembles the masters of the past. THANKYOU MAN, YOU'RE A LEGEND!
Your contents always blow me away. You teach me so much stuff without ever making me confused. It's so clear yet so jam packed with information. Thank you!

I was here to comment the same thing.... Explaining skill is 🙌🙌🙌

Some people will only say it's just kind of feeling, but you explain in a clear concept instead, which make much sense to me , really appreciate it.

Seven! Everyone knows that! ;)
@@marcobucci oh no! Am not a everyone 😭
"can you define the buildings in the foreground & background a bit more?" - clients.
"Hmmm, the scene looks too busy. Can you put more focus on the cathedral?"
This is the type of video that will stick with artists for a liftime. Thanks so much Marco.
Thanks!
This has completely changed the way I view edges, from a complete mess to an organized mess, but with far less struggles, tysm sensei

One video from you > a whole year at the university i'm studying in.
I have never watched an art channel that was so consistently mindblowing and I feel like I've watched all the art channels at this point.
Finally! Clear enough. Thank you. 👏👏👏
As someone who doesnt paint i learn a lot and believe i can paint too.thanks for that
I’m following your advice for the first two steps, thought I will jump into photos, I’m someone that love and have fun figuring things by myself XD

Now to practicing!
SUDDENLY EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE NOW! Thank you for this video! *cries happy tears*
I like the high contrast and low contrast color tip, never knew that.
i have never seen such a ratio of like and dislike. very true to the quality of information within the video
Marco, I, and I'm sure others, really appreciate your clear, concise articulation and instruction. So fun to watch your skill then try some of your exercises. Also, your advanced video production skills haven't gone unnoticed!
I think this video made me realize background could be so fun
What I remember from Schmids Alla prima II was his description of edges as elusive and hard to describe. You made the subject crystal clear. Thanks!
Yeah. I think Schmid said something in his book about edges being the thing that still occupies his mind, 60 years into painting. Something along those lines. They're endless.
Welp I'm mind blown how you managed to pump out almost 20 minutes of exceptionally useful information and not skipping a beat 👍.
Thanks! Many hours of editing goes into these lil videos :)
