Vintage Shasta Camper Trailer Rebuild - Part 1 - Assesment

- We wanted to do a little traveling, so we bought this 1973 Shasta 1400 travel trailer. It ended up needing more repairs than I originally thought. In this video I introduce the trailer and start assessing the dry rot damage. I also remove the interior cabinets and appliances, as well as the windows.

I Just started watching your "Shasta Trailer Rehab" series 6 years after you started. I am also rehabbing a small 2014 Wolf Pup 18' Toy Hauler Travel Trailer that my Wife and I will use to take our 1992 Harley Davidson Fatboy to the 80th Sturgis, towing with our 1999 Chevy Silverado, (first year new generation, 300k MI), to the South Dakota Bike Rally for our 15th trip to the Sturgis Rally since 2005. My Wife and I are both retired after 45 years of me working in Machine Shops and my Wife raising our 2 Daughters and baby sitting our Grandkids. This is our 4th Toy Hauler and 7th RV and since retiring the need to live within a budget became more apparent so we sold our last Toy Hauler, paid off our RV loan and took the balance and bought our current 2014 Wolf Pup. It also had a little water damage which I'm repairing. Most used late model Toy Haulers usually run 10K to 15K and we bought this one for 5K in Missouri and towed back to our home in Northern California. I am repairing a 6 X 6 foot water rotten floor area in the front area and I am learning how to do all of this from watching TH-cam vidoes and people like you and your Wife! Just wanted to say Thank You!

Im preparing myself for a vintage camper renovation. Your videos are helping me a lot on what to look for, what to do for repair, and what to use. i have my eyes on a 65' aristocrat and have no idea what lies beneath the paneling. im keeping my fingers crossed that its not too rough. Ive noticed a lot of people saying 'you paid too much for that heap of junk'. After a ton of research on tiny homes vs. a camper renovation....your pretty much paying for the mobility of the camper. You would pay that if not more just to buy a trailer to build on. Its more fun rebuilding it yourself considering you can make it exactly how you want. After a vintage beauty shop remodel Id really get a kick out of what i could pull off with cheap, free, and salvaged material. Ill be watching your videos repeatedly throughout this process. Keep up the great work!

holy mother of pearl...Jake the paper title that came with this camper probably had more structural integrity than the camper itself. you are a trooper...its all about pride though
I've been watching many of these restoration videos to gather info from you guinea pigs so I can do a thorough inspection before I buy my vintage camper for restoration. Excited to see more updates.

im watching this again, 3rd time i think, but its been a while and im currently working on my 73 fleetwood prowler in similar condition. its funny to look back now and see how you start all dainty like i did then realize you have to rebuild the whole thing.

I recently bought a '73 16SC and have the same issues in the corners but thankfully no fire damage. Wishing I could take the whole thing apart like you are but not able to do that time and money wise. You're lucky you don't have a bathroom in yours, mine came with a dead mouse in the toilet :)
Mine s a 33 ft 1986 Shasta RV but with a lot of more water damage idont know if I could started and Finish it!! Thanks for Sharing!!!
Mines a 73 also, I didn't go as far you are talking. i cant wait to watch the rest of these , looks like a mega part job. LOL
I used PVC pipes, you would not believe how mush stronger it is than the old stuff. also, it will never rot. what i did was use long dry wall screws, and where I could, I would het and bend teh PVC to the shape of the trailer, i woudl double up also in parts that I thought would require extra strength, I can walk on the roof( I am 6ft 3 and I weigh 275 pounds!). that grey conduit you can get at lowes has neat Pieces that you can buy to connect it. I am talking about seriously cheap fixes here that really work well. also , not so cheap really but you don't need too many cans, when I would get all done with a section I would leave it part way open so I could inject GREAT STUFF insulation spray. you would not believe how solid that stuff will make a structure like this. plus the insulation factor is great, it expands out of any hole that is left open however so you have to go trim everything up later. I probably spent 80.00 on materials and fixed my rear structural problem in one long day. mines a dual axle and I have used it in below zero weather with no problem. this method of construction worked so well for me and learned so much about reinforcement and placement and how the aluminum works out that I have been considering making one from the ground up on a flat bed.

Nice little camper. I have 2 that are in need of restoration. One we have used, a 76, and one I just picked up for a song. It's a 65 Star? I do believe. Don't feel like going to look at the title. thanks for this video, I was wondering what these trailers looked like taken apart. I was going to buy one similar to your for $300 but now I see how flexable they are I am going to wait before I buy one now.
Man I wanted to do a project like this next. I dunno now after watching what you got. My parents bought a 36' or so bumper pull for $1000 and it didn't have near as much damage as you have. Hopefully you can get this repaired cheaply enough. Can't wait for new vids on this series and the others.
It was intimidating at first, but then I just got my mind right and told myself it's just basic construction, go for it. That 36 footer is a palace compared to mine!

Man you are crazy! I had a trailer like this and ended up ripping it down to the bare frame.. I had big projects in mind and got most of the way done when my life was turned upside down and I had to sell it as it was.

Ive been to several auto accidents involving camper trailers, not knocking this one. Usually the drivers are new owners and unfamiliar with pulling a trailer, resulting in overturning the trailer and tow vehicle because of excessive speed or high winds. One accident the owner had just bought it and was bringing it home when the trailer fishtailed due to excessive speed. Trailer was a 20 foot standard tounge, both trailer and truck flipped. The trailer literally exploded, and went down a steep embankment. We spent four hours using shovels and pitchforks to clean up the debris.
Wow what a day for that owner. Happy as hell one minute and crying moments later.poor guy

i remember this one back in the day . in hindsight i might have ozone blasted it for mold ,sealed it for any further water leaks , made it as structurally sound as possible with 2x4s or metal framing and made it earn me back that $1000 i paid plus in the sticks 🌲🌳 .

Hey I just purchased a 1980 two days ago , I really appreciate you sharing , mine doesn't have as much damage , This really gives me ideas , I wish I could upload some pics to show you. I am really excited to get in there and restore it , I wanna leave the classic Winnebego paint job but really wanna modernize the inside , Do you have any sites or suggestions to get newer looking cushions , maybe even leather . I wanna put big screen in there as well as a nice system. I looked at Jc Whitnney they didnt have much , Any suggestions will help , thanks again for the restoration tips !!

Should've left the one I bought where it was.im about 3 weeks into demo and I'm considering driving to the nearest cliff and pushing this thing off and call it a total loss.not worth the trouble. Good luck.

I'm sure the old fridge is alright, they were built like tanks back then. However, if it is a propane fridge, make sure to have the gas equipment checked out.
Yeah, I'm hoping it works. I think as long as nothing has leaked it should be fine, as there are no moving parts.

Just wanted to let everyone know before watching all 20+ parts. You will be very disappointed there is no ending. You are left hanging wondering what it looked like in the end. I'm so disappointed! Exciting yet disappointing when the "end" episode was him saying sorry but I stopped making videos cause I tried the stock market...

I'm starting to work on my old Jayco trailer. I've never done much wood repair on one. Its fully assembeled still. I'm doing interior work, replace insulation, all ceiling and wall panels and whatever strapping is rotten. How would you reccomend I start with dissasembling it? One wall at a time? Strip all the walls and ceiling? Strip only the walls first then ceiling? Looking forward to some advice.

may I ask what tool you are using to cut out that plywood for the cabinets, is it a rotozip?
Trailers are built inside out so should be taken apart outside in. Won’t have problems getting large items throw the door
Yes- remove the edge extrusion screws, but leave the extrusion in place - too much work unless you are literally taking it apart like you did.
I’ve always been able to scarf pieces in without creating Lincoln Logs for campers.

That looks like a hell of a lot of work, but the aluminium skin hides all, so you can make it with anything you want and much stronger without it looking any different from the outside :-)

Never mind, im sure you will make it solid again, if you dont want to fully remake it then add loads of extra bracing toothpicks, and replace the bare minimum.
Then splash some wood sealer over everything to kill the old wood smell lol.
i was thinking about doing this but it would be too much work for me and what i want to do, so ill probably just get a used cargo trailer and insulate it and put in a couple windows
Your cabinets were screwed in from the outside just like mine... how did you pull them out?

Hello, Do you have any knowledge about how to haul a damaged camper trailer? i want to haul my Dad's camper back to where i live to refurbish it because i want to keep a piece of my Dad alive. It has no roof and i am wondering if i get it shrink wrap if that would work or do you have any ideas how to secure a damaged trailer to haul it? Its about 500 miles. Thanks in advance!
There is never enough projects as long as your wife doesnt start getting on you about unfinished items laying and tools about the house lol. I'd like to see how it turns out.

This is a very nice trailer, but definitely was worth $500 and nothing more. I just think the past owner thought it was worth way more because they had a lot of time inside of it.
What about wheel bearings and frame structure, is there any wields cracking underneath?

My Damn Channel This is my first trailer project so I don't know for sure, but I looked at some pictures of the 2100 and it looks like it's built the same as the one I'm working on. If it's not rotting away like mine, $500 is a great deal, especially if the fridge works.

Sorry dude. I understand your enthusiasm but i hope all the material you need to bring that back is free cause your gong to need a lot plus wiring, plumbing and a new roof . Wow,, in that shape, most ppl cant even give em away here in Canada.
You think? I know many vintage camper restorers in the US and in Canada and these babies are going for top dollar even unrestored. So if you find someone who wants to give one away, do yourself a favor and take it and resell it. Sorry Dude.
Dont know where you get your info about Canada, but if your so sure about what you say, Come with a flat bed and go to almost any rural dump, you'll find plenty. There are two in Duck Lake that are going to be scrapped before winter. Who are these restorers that you know in Canada, (probably only one person) they can't be very enthusiastic about picking these campers up unless they only want something in like new condition

Sitting here shaking my head... you are gifted with machines not RV's. But we all have to learn. I have owned 4 RV's, all were motor vehicles (Class A, B and C) actually two Class A's. I did research into how to inspect and main problem areas. Roof leaks unrepaired for a long time are a definite nogo. Travel trailers in general are a waste of time. A 20 foot enclosed trailer with a drop down / ramp door are best to make a "TOY HAULER". That is what I am doing right now. Reading some replies here- found that you never did a FINISH episode!? What!
"There's evidence of fire damage" Well, there is evidence of burn damage, but it's not from fire, it's from battery acid. I can pretty much guarantee a 12V battery was something added later. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

If you are into vintage trailer restoration, that price is pretty much fair....buying brand new trailer will last few years due to poor workmanship, you'd lose more with $20k new trailer than $1k vintage trailer.
You can sell each window for $100-200. You do the math.
