  • I visit the Cotswold town of Dursley nestled in the foothills of the Cotswold escarpment, and a town that has certainly made its mark on the world, as I discovered on my walk around the town.

Hello Paul. My imagination ran wild with visions of what Dursley must have been like years ago. Especially the stream running through the town. Literally the center of attention then. Thank you.👍

      Thanks Daryl.
Yes, it would have been a hive of activity centered around the stream.
After I edited this I have now found out that Pedersen Cycles are still made, but now in Copenhagen.
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
      Cheers, Paul 😊

I love the sounds you captured of the running water and the bell ringing - it was almost like they were waiting for you. Thanks for sharing!

I know - I couldn't believe how lucky I was with the timing of that! The sound wasn't dubbed - it literally was as I was walking up the steps!! Talk about good timing. Thanks, Jesse! 👍Take care, Paul 😊

Hello Paul - greetings from an even snowier Poland.
Lovely to be back in Dursley to have an even longer look at this lovely town. A superb video, beautifully photographed by you with a very interesting commentary

Thank you - Dursley is a town of much interest but it often gets overlooked. It's right on the popular Cotswold Way too. Cheers,
      Paul

Excellent introduction to a 'good in parts' curate' s egg of a town which I've always found fascinating. Wondrous soundtrack of running water and bells from the tower of St James. The church tower collapsed in 1698 and was rebuilt in 1707-9 by one Thomas Sumsion of Colerne in Wiltshire. He was one of the last master masons to carry on in the gothic style, unaffected by fashion or new ideas. He built a copy of his own church tower in Colerne, topped of by a copy of the pierced battlements at Gloucester Cathedral. Sad to see all traces of Lister's gone and soon forgotten. A small part of their illustrious history is still going strong on my son's narrowboat, mercifully...

      Brilliant!
Thanks for that additional information about the church there in Dursley, Philip.
      Much appreciated.
Unfortunately, apart from the welcome bell ringing, there was some kind of event on in the church, so I was unable to explore inside it on this occasion.
Yes, such a shame that Lister's factory has been completely wiped away - shame that some of it could not be kept, considering it's industrial heritage. There are some pieces in Dursley Museum, but, again, that was not open when I was free to explore here.
      Thanks so much,
      Cheers,
      Paul

An interesting town. I once walked there from Stroud, but don't remember much except the steep descent from the hills above, the Dursley-Pederson plaque and the bus station, where I think I caught a bus to Gloucester. Thank you for showing me how much I missed.

      Thank you Malcolm!
      Glad you enjoyed it.
That's quite a hilly and strenuous walk from Stroud to Dursley!
I only discovered the mill and Pedersen's former home a few weeks ago - there doesn't seem to be a waymarked trail for it, unfortunately.
      Cheers,
      Paul

Hi Paul, What a lot of history packed into such a small town. Maybe you caught the last colours of Autumn there?
The stream reminded me of my walks following the acequia gorda down here, found some more bits today
The news has been showing snow all over Europe, the UK as well. If you go to a bullfight you will be offered tickets for either "sol"or "sombre" sun or shade. Today the sun was perfect but the sombre was freezing!!
This week is a short one workwise, Wednesday and Friday are bank holidays so for most of us Thursday becomes a "puente" a bridging holiday.
Great video, well done, have a great week

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi David!
We have just escaped the snow here in Gloucestershire, although Shropshire, just a little further to the north of here, has had a major snow fall.
It has been particularly bad in Cumbria (The English Lake District) where a major incident has been declared.
Yes, I do think that was the very last of the autumnal colours for this year - certainly none in my next two videos!
Glad you have some time off this week - hope the sun out stays!
Take care and hope you have a great week!
      Paul

In 1971 we got married in Dursley Church and then went over to the "Old Bell Hotel" for the wedding reception, now known as "Ye Olde Dursley Hotel"

I think I prefer the old name 'Old Bell Hotel' - the current name sounds Disneyesque!

What a wonderful little town, with some lovely buildings & wonderful church bells. The handle bars of the bike looked so low, but shouldn't comment on anyone's inventions as I have never invented anything, my brain doesn't work that way.

Since editing this video, I was very surprised to learn that Pedersen bicycles are still manufactured - but this time in Copenhagen, Denmark!
It is a most interesting little town that doesn't get that many visitors, except a few walking past along The Cotswold Way.
      Thanks again!
      Take care,
      Paul

Thank you Roy - yes, I never did get the chance to have a tour of Lister's unfortunately. They also made litter bins - you can occasionally see these bins in some parks in towns.
I did have a tour of Mawdsleys factory though (they make electric motors for cars and lorries) in Dursley in the 1980s. They have since moved to Bristol.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.

Another lovely walk with you through a delightful and, surprisingly jam packed with history, town. You have such talent to relate the facts, data, stories in such a pleasant tone and easy listening way. The weather looked about on par with here. Let the winter come so we can look forward to spring. Most enjoyable Paul. Thank you. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿

Not somewhere ive ever visited or actually ever likely to but funny enough that actually makes it all the more interesting to me as learning new things i might normally pass by.

Hi Shaun, yes, although it is a Cotswold town, like Shipston-on-Stour or Fairford, and a whole host of others, it gets few visitors. It doesn't have the bling factor of the likes of say Stow-on-the-Wold or Bradford-on-Avon.
Still, it is interesting - I have still yet to visit the museum here though!
      Cheers, Paul

Another nearby town I haven’t been to and didn’t realise it’s as big as it looks. Pedersen’s bicycles look a bit uncomfortable to my eyes and what is that pointy section on the frame? Most odd.
Great video, Paul, and always good to hear the bells - there was a very brief distant peal before the main one featured which sounded good too, was it a different church?

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi Ian!
Yes, I guess we are looking at Pedersen's design through 21st C googles now - it was an improvement over other designs due to its suspension features. They are a pure cross design, and Pedersen's bikes are still made today - in Copehagen! The uniqueness of the design was the hammock seat which rode out the pot holes - and still does.
The apparent other peal of bells was just a fluke of my editing - I use either three or four parallel audio stereo tracks. It was just the fade of the last clip's audio 'bleeding' over into the next one - it usually sounds preferable to a simple cross-fade. Well spotted!
      Thanks so much,
      Cheers,
      Paul

Thanks for the tour of Dursley- somewhere I’ve not visited. Riding those Peterson cycles seemed very awkward- they looked so low! But the founder must have been successful as you said they are still trading in Denmark!
The town looked like it must have looked years ago- didn’t seem to have any ugly new builds nor did it have those ubiquitous names( well they weren’t visible) like Costa, Subway, McDonalds, Greggs( we have just got a Greggs on the High St) and I do like a hardware shop and that looked a good size! I always find something useful to buy in a hardware shop. Ours has just closed down- it was small in comparison but I bought quite a bit in there!! A sign of the times. I appreciated the church peal of bells - that was so fortuitous!

      Thank you Diana.
Yes, it is a town that isn't on the tourist trail really, despite it being in the Cotswolds, presumably because it is associated with industry, rather than agriculture.
It has much of interest though, I feel, and a lot of it is a bit hidden.
Yes, the Pedersen bikes were designed on the suspension bridge principle - it was because of the huge problem with pot holes in roads at the end of the 19th Century. Of course, we've moved on from that now, and we don't have, oh, wait! Some things don't change, and it is presumably why they are still made.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.
      Take care,
      Paul 🙂👍

      @dianarolph1770 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You made me laugh! But you know I very much doubt that the Danish roads are anything but immaculate so no need to design the bikes for potholes there! Here is a different kettle of fish!😀

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's because there are no traces of it to see these days, as far as I am aware. It was built by Roger de Berkeley, and sat at Castle Fields (possibly!) but there is nothing to see there.
