Thank you Malcolm. Yes, it is a most beautiful and fascinating church. My mum lived in Fairford for many years when she was growing up. Take care, Paul
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland Thank you for this magnificent video of a church I knew nothing about. Thanks to your video and to the tour by the vicar, I have learnt just how important this church is to the nation. The stained glass is fabulous
Thank you Michael! I know 'gem' and 'unique' get overused but they have throroughly earned their place here. The stained glass is incredible, and it is a miracle that they have survived intact. I think that they were taken out during WWII and put into safekeeping. Take care, Paul
Magnificent stain glass windows... but also very scary looking at the violence and monsters in Hell. You can imagine how people in the old days would have been afraid of the prospect of ending up there. 🧐🧐 🙂
Yes, that is true Cathy! I can't get over just how vivid and colourful those stained glass images are - incredible craftsmanship. It is an amazing church - my mum grew up in Fairford so I feel that I have got to know it well over the years. Take care, Paul
Thank you Paul for this magnificent video of Fairford Church. The stained glass windows are surprising. Not only for their age and their conservation, but also for their craftsmanship and pictural quality. I can easily comprehend the biblical narrative and its inspiration. The medieval wood sculptures of the « miséricordes » are stunning. Canon Caroline Symcox was a competent guide. Very clever and generous of her to show us these treasures unique of her church. Thank you so much Clément from Canada
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the tour of this church. You know, I spent a while editing this video, and each time I looked at each frame and photo of the stained glass on my laptop, I saw something new that I hadn't seen before. It truly is breathtaking, and I really cannot comprehend the craftsmanship skill levels that created these amazing pieces of glass. I am so pleased that they have survived. Thanks for watching and a lovely comment. Paul
I have been to Fairford but never visited the church- remarkable stained glass! The Last Judgement was so intricate & wonderfully made. We have lost so much medieval stained glass. Is there provision to protect these windows I wonder? I like the misericords- I remember seeing some ( don’t recall where) with inappropriate carvings! Think they were there to give some light relief besides much needed rest! Thanks Paul!
Thank you Diana! The stained glass here really is in another league, isn't it? Yes, some misericords are quite inappropriate for a church setting! Incredible how some of them were allowed in the past. They were removed (the windows ) during WWII - I think they were stored in London, not sure where. Thanks so much! Take care, Paul
What an incredible church, and those windows were amazing. I never knew about these and amazed they survived the English Civil War. So many churches were vandalised and their windows destroyed. This makes me ask the question, just how did they survive? Why weren't they touched? Just incredible to see.
Thank you Alice - always great to hear from you. Yes, incredible stained glass in this church - it really is a miracle that they have survived intact. They had a very narrow escape during the (Second) English Civil War and were removed during WWII for their safety. Quite something to have the full set! Glad you enjoyed the tour. Take care, Paul
i have never heard of a misericord! How fascinating! I really like them! Thank you for showing us around such a beautiful church and for you and the vicar sharing some of the history. I really enjoyed this and the music was very relaxing too. The windows were stunning and to think that they are so old! Amazing!
Thank you Louise! Yes, quite a few churches have them - always worth having a peek under the seats. These though are rather special - and very old! Amazing really that they spent so long carving something that is often out of view! Glad you enjoyed the video. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul - not sure if you can remember me, we spoke at Inglesham lock open day a few years ago. It is a small world - it was my son Daniel who was practicing on the organ - he has his grade 8 exam this coming Friday! Hope it didn't interrupt your filming too much.
Hi Mark! Yes, I do indeed remember you! That was an unforgettable day when the lock was opened at Inglesham for the general public - and now good news at the other end of the Cotswold Canals with the missing mile. Love to see it reopen from Inglesham to the Cotswold Water Park. All the best for your son Daniel for his exam this Friday - from what I heard inside the church he has an amazing talent! It is a wonderful organ inside there. The vicar explained that it was an important organ session and not some 'light practice'. Thanks so much and great to hear from you. All the best! Paul
Thank you Adrian! I see you were fairly close by the other day when you were at Eastleach Turville. Fairford is one of my favourite towns - remarkably unchanged, and with some good facilities too. Thanks so much! Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, I watched yesterday but ran out of time to comment. How nice that the vicar should reach out to you and give you a guided tour too. I think she must be the first female vicar I have ever seen. The stained glass windows looked in fantastic condition. I had a quick look on their site and there is a wonderful arial view, it also tells that they have binoculars available for studying the higher windows. I didn't quite know what a misericord was but it is word you often here in Spanish, misericordia, which means mercy I think and also has the same sense as in the English usage. Thinking about it you can see why!! On our recent trip to Toledo we visited a monastery full of ornate stone carvings in the cloisters many of fantastic beings animals with wings and also in the corner a monkey sat down on a bucket going to the toilet!! You made a very professional job of the filming well done. All the best!!
Thank you for your kind words David. It really is a rather special church. Glad you enjoyed the video. I think a lot of the vicars round about here are female. It was so lovely to be invited to come back and film inside the church. Take care, Paul

Lovely video of a special place, my home town. My mum and dad are both buried here and I rang the bells here before moving to the United States. I live in Keystone South Dakota now, this was a lovely surprise trip down memory lane.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I have many connections to this town too, not least of which was that my mum grew up here in the 1950s. The church here really is rather special. Take care, Paul
