@Chris Bonilla Hernandez don't be mad because he told the truth. The Supremes were definitely not what black people would call soulful. They sung pop music and ballads mostly curated for white audiences. They had a few R&B soul hits like this one and "Someday" but they were few and far between. That doesn't take away from it's significance.
I agree. It is fantastic for sure and when you examine it closely the tension and progression of the song is so masterful it is hard to think of other songs on the same level. When this was made Motown was a hit machine loaded with talented people who would collaborate and brainstorm to give each of their artists a hit and then another and another. If you had to get bogged down in committees and contracts and disbursements with everyone demanding a share of the credit and profits it never would have happened. Sure money was important but these people were jazzed and inspired by the seemingly endless success at the time.

@@williammials6080 Diana's voice was good but in no way was she elite. She had little range.. She didn't have any real soul either. Yes women were held back in those days and their hits in 64 and 65 were amazing as a whole. Part of any successful group/act is stage presence and oh boy did they have it! I think her last hit with the Supremes was in 69 Someday and I believe is her best song of all. Ever! . Really vocally she may have had 3 octaves? Her voice was kinda dark , Smokey and even heavy. Compare her to Aretha and Whitney? Not even..It was more of the perfect time for them. They were our answer to the British Invasion. Back then as she became a diva we were all turned off by her.. She by far not the only one. I think Cher and Madonna learned a few things from her.. The way she treated Mary Wilson is well just her. But!! For her we would not have the Jackson 5 and Michael So all good! lol
@@veekatore8983 Who cares! The Supremes were selling records left and right! I'm not here to bash the Diva's that we are losing right and left! Everyone (Black) did not sing soul music in the 60's and yet they were still big as crossover artist! Nat King Cole and Dionne Warwick! Why even Tina Turner did not technically sing soul but rather rock infused with some soul. And who cares about the haters you speak of??? I'm assuming you are talking about Black people??? Anyway, the crossover successes more than made up for that so called hate!
I loved this song for the tune when I was a kid, but if I heard the words, I didn't understand them back then. What a great song. They had so many hits.
I realised all wear no shoes. Supremes was a big star by then, I cannot believe that they accepted to wear such costumes. It's my favourite song by Supremes.
I'm a love child born in 1971 apart from the dress on first day of school this song sums up my life exactly 😮 honestly from slum to be hated by parent 2nd best etc and this song is so true on in so many ways just wish my mum had listened to it properly back then lol and just sent this song to her it's 53 too late I know but hopefully she understands my meaning ❤️
It's amazing how the times have changed America's outlook on certain situations. In 1968 the Supremes are singing a song about the shame of being born out of wedlock. The shame of "not having a name" and no father in the house. Skip forward to today, and kids are told now that "they don't need a father" and women are proud to have a baby without staying with the man because "they don't need a man". That's why Black neighborhoods are war zones compared to back then. No fathers in the homes to tell young boys they're not supposed to go out and rob and steal and carjack. And I'm 70 years old and KNOW what black households were like back then, so I speak from experience.
From the "Did you know" files....... 1968 This was the Supremes' first number #1 hit not written by the team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, as the trio had left Motown in a dispute over royalties. Motown founder Berry Gordy wrote this with staff songwriters Deke Richards, Pam Sawyer, R Dean Taylor and Frank Wilson. Instead of writing about love, they came up with a much more controversial song about a child born to unmarried parents. Neither founder member Mary Wilson nor more recent addition Cindy Birdsong (replacing Florence Ballard) sang a note on this single. The test run with Motown session group The Andantes as backup singers was issued as the single. Mary claims that this was a move by Berry Gordy to make clear to her and Cindy that they were expendable and further establish his power over them as well as playing up to his protégé/lover Diana Ross. Mary further says that the miming to the number for The Ed Sullivan Show was particularly difficult, knowing she didn't sing on it.
As far as I'm concerned anyone could be singing backup on the Supremes records because Diana's lead was always the focal of all their records! Her voice carried all their hits so Mary should have been use to her role of singing or not singing on records! I always heard she nor Cindy sang on Someday We'll Be Together! I've never objected to the name change of the group or to Diana's solo career! She was doing most of the work!
@@williammials6080 I'm certainly not detracting from the fact that the supremes were defined by Diana Ross' vocals .As distinct to the supremes as Levi Stubbs was to the 4 tops.
Interestly Ballard & Birdsong weren't singing as backing on this record. Recorded on September 17, 1968 at Hitsville Studio A, Detroit, The Andantes were used as the backing singers. This performance was recorded on September 29, 1968.

Ed Loved the Supremes and often called them the girls and always had them greet him after their performance..
Everything has an ending! The 70's were around the corner!
@@williammials6080 In this case no one liked Diana. There always those that want to stay the same and others moving ahead. She was just all about her and Flo and Mary were the best part of her career. I was there, the war was getting worse, racial issues, the 60's in many ways were far better than the 70's..lol
@@veekatore8983 PLEASE! Florence and Mary were backups singers! Backup is all they will be known for! Why they did not even sing on many of hits of the Supremes! The Andantes were used. And sounded way better! Diana was the Supremes first last and always!
My dad asked me do you have any idea what that song is about…I was 12…not a clue
I’m 38 and just now really listening to the lyrics and I’m floored. I’ve always loved the melody but never paid the lyrics any mind 💀
Best Girl Group in Rock and Roll History PERIOD. Anytime you go Against the Beatles for Most Number 1 Songs in the 1960s. They are Bad MAMMA JAMMA
Agree 200%, tbey have more No.1s than any American group on the Billboard charts ever..
I still can't believe she Mary is gone. I can't handle the pain.
Good old days with good old hit song as many of their hits were simply the best.
Rest in peace Mary Wilson. You will be missed
She was going in on this song man the songs and writing back 🔙 then shiiiii
Mary Wilson so beautiful!
I realised all wear no shoes. Supremes was a big star by then, I cannot believe that they accepted to wear such costumes. It's my favourite song by Supremes.
LOVED that they were not all glammed up!
The girls even came out with no shoes and killed it. The song at 1:07 is when I get chills.
Yo. Same here
it's all about the bass!
Agree 100%
I thought I was the only one lol
Damn
What a great song
I am 52 and still here love this song and many more .♥️
Me Too
I'm 33 and grew up with this music on KRTH 101. Still my favourite music in the world.
Diana was the best of the motor city.
To my Favorite Cousin Marylou ❤ , I love And Miss You So Much ! love ❤ Peter . RIP .
Mary, wearing that bling
Never listened to the lyrics but this song is deep
From the "Did you know" files.......
1968
This was the Supremes' first number #1 hit not written by the team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, as the trio had left Motown in a dispute over royalties.
R Dean Taylor??????? He had a solo hit with INDIANA WANTS ME.
@@williammials6080 he wrote and Co wrote many more singles for other artists than he did for himself.
WE ALL SHOULD KNW ABOUT. BEING A LOVE CHILD .THIS WAS SO TRUE!!! BAC N THE DAY!!!
RIGHT
ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL!
Interestly Ballard & Birdsong weren't singing as backing on this record.
Recorded on September 17, 1968 at Hitsville Studio A, Detroit, The Andantes were used as the backing singers.
This performance was recorded on September 29, 1968.
