@carlito45two maybe you're both right. Diana was the right choice because she had the most commercial voice. (It didn't come easily; she was terrible circa 1960.) By the same token, the background singers excelled in their own right and were just as important to the group as she was.
Florence Ballard showing everyone how beautiful that voice of hers was! Thank God for these live version video clips. On the vinyl version they also lowered the background vocals and raised Diana's voice up. In the live versions Flo can be heard prominently. She had a really natural alluring sound that your ear wants to hear more of.

You have to be crazy to look at this listen to these songs another unparalleled success, and then say Diana Ross is not the perfect choice. I'm astounded that people say that. I think this one is my favorite one by The Supremes

Diana was the right choice because she had the most commercial voice. (It didn't come easily; she was terrible circa 1960.)
By the same token, the background singers excelled in their own right and were just as important to the group as she was.
Florence Ballard showing everyone how beautiful that voice of hers was! Thank God for these live version video clips. On the vinyl version they also lowered the background vocals and raised Diana's voice up. In the live versions Flo can be heard prominently. She had a really natural alluring sound that your ear wants to hear more of.
So true, despite the great lead from Diana, all i focus on is Flo, it was shocking the way she was treated -deserved so much better - at least we have these recordings to watch - her smile shines through

Oh my this is an amazing performance by them all but Flo just rocks it - never bettered - a very melancholic tune - even after 50 + years - absolute class :)
