The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Diana Ross is just 24 years old here. She already had eleven (11) number one records. Diana Ross is without a doubt one of the greatest popular music performers of the 20th Century
A true, genuine SUPERSTAR.
A Goddess.
Io invece avevo 10anni
Yes as many as Madonna has now
THE SUPREMES HAD 11 HITS not just Diana
Ed Sullivan should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for championing and showcasing all the great artists of the 50's and 60's - Elvis, Beatles, these ladies and a host more of music icons. I think the way he truly loved and promoted the black acts in the 1960's when America was grappling with civil rights, really puts the man on a higher level than most - in fact, fuck the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, give the man a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize instead.
The RRHOF is so fake anymore. They have forgotten this generation of great entertainers (probably none of those who run it were even born before 1970) I'll go along with the Nobel prize for sure.
Indeed!!!
@@muffs55mercury61- 100% agreed. The fact they are inducting the likes of Jay-Z further proves your comment as 100% accurate
Now this is real music! I love the older music. They tell a story… can’t beat the classics
She was Queen of Motown!
SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS! BUT SHE WAS THE HO OF MOTOWN! GOT PASSED AROUND LIKE A SHOVEL!
RIP Mary Wilson ❤😢and I loved you ❤
Those crushed-velvet outfits are boss.
I've seen these videos dozens and dozens of times. And, I've heard people talk about these outfits, but I never noticed they were velvet. 😮
RIP Mary Wilson, stunning vocals
And what a mover, I could watch her grooving to this all day.
Diana Ross is the one who is singing, BTW 🙂
@@henry-bo3np True but shes not very easy on the eye unlike Mary who just grabs your attention.
I know. She was in her 70's. It was still a shock which a death always is.
@@henry-bo3np
Mary's backing vocals are the cherry on top.
This aired the night I was born!
This post should have a million views. Wth? This is real music 🎶
It had 20M TV viewers the night it aired in Jan 69... I was one of them!
Oh my goodness. Mary and Cindy were the absolute best. Diana up front. Best girl group ever. Love them!
It’s cool how they performed this song twice on this show
First time was a lip sync. This performance is much better.
They cleaned up their outfits. The first appearance they were going for street cred. Lol well edgy for The Sullivan show.
@@DCGuy1997 That Is what I think, first one-studio recording, sounds like the radio version...
@@mark9zeThey did that cuz Mary and Cindy didn’t record in time and Berry wanted to promote the song
@@Noirthebaee Mary was off on vacation when this song was recorded.
Love that Mary and Cindy are singing the backup vocals and you can clearly hear them!
So much talent and class! Today we have crap for music.
One of my favorite songs from the Supremes!!!!
My second, after "You Can't Hurry Love" and it this was an EXTREMELY big hit in Australia.,
Yes, love child one of my favorite as well
Best version of the song. No Andantes, Ross in great voice, band grinding.
@Damo Trent This is Wilson and Birdsong's voices, which they have prerecorded, not the Andantes - you can clearly hear Mary. The same on In and Out of Love, the Fats Waller medley, the Irving Berlin medley, the Funny Girl medley, Thou Swell, etc. Only when they are lip-synching their records (No Matter What Sign You are, other performance of Love Child), do you hear Andantes. Otherwise., the musical director in the Sullivan show worked with all three girls and got the best sound out of them too. No Andantes here.
@DeVante Cooley It’s the same person.
@@Branner upre
This is the version that was supposed to be released.
@@Branner
Who the heck are the Andantes?
Diana looked so pretty on this performance. I love her makeup and hair. Just perfect. 🤗
*in this...
It's a wig and fake eyelashes!!
Diana Ross Killing it Live
Those background vocals were *smooth* ❤ Love the _"scorned by..."_ at 1:30
Never knew that's what they sang. Thanks.
...i felt it too when Mary sang that...it was so smooth and sexy...
One of the best songs by one of the best singers ever. Usually I love 60s fashion...but performing in pajamas? Gotta love it! :D
I wish I could go back into the past to the time when this song came out.
It was always on the radio...the car radio especially.
@@Jack-ke5uv This song is not on the radio stations I listen to in New York City.☺They don't play music from the 60's.
@@daddygrace253 I was talking about when the song was released back in 1968. Back in those days all new music was released through radio and radio was the main venue for listening to new music. I don't imagine Love Child plays at all on radio today since the digital era with its preprogrammed earphone playlist has virtually killed radio as a conduit for new or old music today.
@@Jack-ke5uv OIC; thanks for the clarification. I wish radio stations played this music today and not RAP music.
I love Mary's "That Girl" wig.
In this clip I like Cindy Birdsong. She was never given the credit she deserved.
@@debchancy2304 yea Cindy was as hot as a FIRECRACKER!
So many lyrics in the backing vocals that are much clearer than when the Andantes sang them. I *really* wish Cindy and Mary had been on the late-'60s singles. They would have made them much better.
Nice live performance. No auto tune great. Mary Wilson was as sexy as ever. RIP to her
This song captures the feel of the 60s. The Supremes were so beautiful. Great song👍.
I'm a love child too!
Mary steals it !!!!!!!
MARY MARY MARY!!!
Yes!! Mary shines in this performance, "scorn by"
Mary sexy self
This version without the Andantes is actually quite good! Mary and Cindy can be heard loud and clear! 1:53 Look at how much fun Mary's having! ))
Forever queens
INDEED!!!!!!
....after ALL these years, I STILL love this performance; The 'T-shirt / cut-offs' Sullivan performance is ICONIC for the 'shock' value at the time, but HERE, they're relaxed, professional, & ALL THREE are singing the song! ...Extra shout-out to the Wigs- Diana FINALLY got the 'Afro-Wig' right, Cindy's is soft, yet frames her face, & MARY! ...The Marilyn McCoo / 5th Dimension Wig was EXTRAORDINARY, her best EVER look!! ...SUPREME!!!
Right and they look much happier
My all time favorite from Diana Ross and The Supremes! I love you ladies!!!❤.
Devastating song. My word, the lyrics and delivery!
Love how clearly you can hear Mary❤️
Man, I was a toddler when this was out, but I still can remember the sounds of Motown being a staple in our household. Now I can really appreciate it & that time better now watching these clips.
The Supremes doing the "Four Corners" dance move....very popular in the late 60s!
Yes. the four corners dance!!
TO THIS “ED SULLIVAN CLASSIC” BLOGGER, DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES’ “LOVE CHILD” WAS THE NEWEST HIT SOUL TO BECOME #1, WORLDWIDE, AND Y’ALL, “PREVIOUS SHOW VIEWERS, ‘WHAT A SOUL’ CLASSIC!!”😺😸
A real musical work of art. And how daring, a song written in that era from the point of view of a child born out of wedlock. Like myself.
the first time was singing to the record , they had to go back to sing it live !
One of the best and one of my favorit songs from Diana.
Mary is epic here!
perfect voice is outstanding
I get the chills when she says that she will always love You @ 2:40
Beautiful song & beautiful ladies ! This is heaven !!
Motown became quite socially conscious in the late '60s and turned out some great songs. Later when I started working I bought all the 45s.
The one on the far left is Cindy Birdsong who was Florence Ballard's replacement.
I have most of all the The Supremes on "The Ed Sullivan Show". Most of the performances do not sow the full introduction from Ed. AND.....its clear! They also sing "Living in Shame" on the same show.
How do you have them? Did full episodes come out on DVD?
Every time I listen to this songs, it bring tears, cause it brings back memories of the my early teens. Now in 2021, I'm 67!🤔😢
I went to a Diana Ross concert during the 1990s. She was promoting a new album, but I think most of us were waiting for her to sing just any Supreme's songs. They are just so catchy.
By the 1990's she was firmly entrenched in her solo career glory. I think she wanted to stay away from Supremes songs.
Look how pretty they look! Ahhhh love child. In a worn torn dress.. ahhh I always love you!
SHE"S TELLING THE TRUTH.
The Supremes sure knew how to write good songs. This one is a banger
Motown writers and producers wrote them.
except they didnt write any of them.
Diana Ross es muy bonita
Spectacular live performance!
How lucky to be there watching all it live.
Go Cindy and Mary. Do those back vocals. They should've been on the recording in first place.
Mary’s wig was 🔥 lol
Had some moves going on too
To be on this Sunday Night Show...Ed Sullivan's Show.....you were at the top rung of the ladder for total talent .....the best !
Never seen a video to this song before. Bought the single over here in the UK at the time it came out, still a favourite of mine and have it on my car stereo. Still struck by the beauty and the purity of Diana's voice. Seen comments here about how only the Motown bands were competing with "the British invasion" at the time. In the UK we had no concept at all about such an invasion, indeed i only became aware that it was a phenomenon relatively recently after seeing a documentary about it, and I'm stunned at the extent of it and immensely proud of the influence of our bands over there. The world's playlist is Western popular music, created by the synergy between British and American artists competing against and taking inspiration from each other. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
these girls rocked all of them
Great song, and performance!
Complete Diva by this time
Greatest to ever do it
Outstanding. Such a powerful song for it's day.
This song spent two weeks at number one Dec 30 to November 7 1968 the topic of the song was very tabu dealing with a child born out of wedlock. This was a tabu subject because Marriage was a big step and this song went against the moral code but fans love this song!
This givin me vibes. Jus a lil kid then, saw it on TV aired.
Vietnam war goin on.
The Times was intense, man.
Only she has those beautiful eyes💗
Every era and genre has those who stand above the rest. Of the "girl groups" of the 60s the Supremes were unmatched, the best of the best.
What I liked about ED Sullivan show it was live. And you had to sing live in those days. No short cuts.
Ed did make exceptions toward the end. Once exception he did make was to let Gary Lewis and the Playboys lip sync Diamond Ring as it was too difficult to replicate live. I read somewhere the record company did not have faith in Gary Lewis and the Playboys and all kinds of enhancements had to be made to boost up the recording to professional level. One problem was Gary's thin voice. In the studio I read that the record company insisted that a professional singer sing along with Gary under the mix to boost up Gary's voice.
They slayedddddddd that!!!!
No auto-tune required when you can actually sing!
Goat of all time
@Adonis Castro she’s not off key, she’s out of time, the band is going really for some reason
@ArtistsCry13She’s most likely adjusting her key for Mary and Cindy
You knew Diana Ross was the queen when she wasn’t forced to lip sync like everybody else on this show.
It would had been nice to see the three of them today on stage . Come back performance
Ed Sullivan was really fond of the Supremes. How many times did they perform on the really big show?
Une of My favorite group and song of Sixties, wonderfull
Get it Diana. Old favorite song.
This song is good
Pazzescaaa ❤️🔥
Wow, this song is beyond powerful while beautiful. I've played it 10 times already. Posting this on 5-8-21
The Supremes must have made the most appearances on Ed Sullivan more than any other bands.
Wow….her voice 🎤
Rip Mary!!
Oh how I wish Mary and Cindy had provided vocals on the actual records of Love Child & Someday We'll Be Together!
Yeah and many people still don't even know about this (or the countless other recordings) Jackie Hicks actually messaged me on my old TH-cam channel about 13/14 years ago when I posted a motown medley I recorded.
Someday was a diana solo berry gordy thought it would make a good final song for the group so it was used. Mary and cindy were not meant to be on there
@@divinewilliams3055 I know it was meant to be Diana's first solo record, (I suspect it was recorded before '69) but after Berry decided to release it as the final single for the Supremes he should have gotten the engineers to re dub the track with Mary and Cindy's vocals. And called them in to put their harmonies and backing on the song.
@@Miketendo93 Agreed!
Mary and Cindy made their mark in the background as well, in comparison to the Adantes vocals on the recording.
They definitely did it
Thanks for this song. Despite the attempts at inclusivity of all people that younger generations seem to stand for, some of us will always be "second best and different from the rest". But at least someone "will always love" us.
Groovy pajamas girls!!
My favourite song beautiful ❤😊
Their big hit after HDH left Motown. I can only imagine how nervous they were not knowing, if they would have another big hit. But come on,, it’s the supremes... the Supremes is my favorite female group of all time. 💜
After HDH left the Supremes never had another hit. Love Child was recorded with the Andantes not Mary or Cindy or Flo. After HDH left only Diana was on the single recordings until she left.
@@jackjules7552 it was still Diana Ross and the Supremes, she hadn’t left yet. Them singing backup doesn’t matter she was still in the group. They did still have hits after HDH left which was my initial comment. Someday We'll Be Together, etc. HDH did not write! And the Supremes had a number of top ten singles after Diana left.
Yes, they did have many hits after Diana left and Mary and Cindy sang on all of them!@@UnboxingWithErra
DIANITA SE CARACTERIZA POR SU GRAN VOZ
INTEGRA LAS SUPREMAS QUE SI LO SON ELLAS
ÍCONO DE TEMA, CON SU ROCK MÁS INCLUIDO
BUEN ÉXITO QUE LO DISFRUTAMOS NOSOTROS.
Love this
She’s everything to me…
Amazing as ALWAYS ❤
What a swell guy that Ed, he loved Diana
What a creepy looking guy that Ed... I grew up watching Ed Sullivan, but I never realized how creepy he looked until I saw the intro to this great song.
Wow 😲 I didn't know!
Legend!🔥Diana remembers me of Michael😍

Songwriter(s) of the song "Love Child": R. Dean Taylor, Frank Wilson, Pam Sawyer, Deke Richards. So glad MJ sang lyrics like "I ain't second to none", which is so right, thanks Mike.

Amazing live vocal by Diana, what a talent
Excellent!
So so talented
Maravilloso!!
Great Diana!! ❤
