Hi Todd,,lol I had to laugh as the cattle herd made their way down the street as you and Neenee were eating. Even the cattle are chill,,, just like the locals. That place you checked out on the river is very cool, but I prefer yours,,I think because of that cool old french bridge. Sunset shots had to have been superb. I too love the tradish houses on stilts. I wonder if that design style was incorporated from the needs to live in areas prone to flooding,,then people started realizing how practical it is and adopted the idea everywhere. I love it! I think it's perfect. What better place to have hammocks on a hot day than the shady middle of the house. Such a practical place too,,,animal shelter,,,storage,,warm weather living. A deck, garage and storage space all in one. I'd like to listen to the stories the old french colonial building would tell,,if walls could talk. Wonder at the age of that building too. I was told by my parents that the reason why traditional houses are built on stilts mainly for protection against flooding during heavy rain season. Also, for other practical use such as shading during a hot sunny humid day as well as keeping live stocks like chickens etc.
So the islands look amusing and the towns is very clan and comfortable, with nice people all around. Nice man you ran into and his family enjoying life on the island, you can't beat that lifestyle now can you. I noticed on the map that there is a temple due southeast on the corner of the island. Maybe you will take a stroll over and look around, maybe grab some lunch? I find this a real nice place to relax and just breath in the peace and clean air. Look forward to the next video and well you might want to make sure they have enough of your nescafe coffee drink you seem to be addicted to Todd haha. Hi Todd, really really enjoyed the 400 island vids but didn't feel the car park vid. Don't change for me, just my 2 bob. The motors are probably from a boat as they have a fan over the exhaust and fuel delivery and run a heat exchanger and not a radiator. Your vids make me jealous as we are stuck in Brisbane, you know the grass is always greener! Not too long and I will be drinking rice wine and pacing myself.
I agree with Milk when I lived in Northern Thailand the Thais told me it was because of the flooding and a few months later the monsoon started and the flood covered over 30 miles from the Mekong. Our barracks were also raised up not as much as the local houses and we had some get water in them. I was lucky my bed was on the second floor. I love your trips and videos. I also love old trains and the engine was the cherry on top.....

I think,,,,think,,,. that they want to get rid of overflows of water that may happen during the raining season. They want to get rid of snakes, spiders and scorpions, etc. And as you say, it is a good area for relaxing in the shade, where you can have animals etc. And the small thing, there may be a small breace (wind) up there, that maybe makes it a little more comfortable up there.
That is amazing, you are having dinner just after seeing the children walk home from school and then a little later cows walking the same streets. What an eye opening place. These people don’t seem to depend on the government much unlike we do in the west. I need to visit. ❤️🇨🇦❤️ Cheers!!!

Lao people have been building their houses on Stilts since they lived in China, when Lanxang established their boarder with Vietnam, they agreed that where the houses start to be built on Stilts and the land west is Lao lands and the houses built on the ground (Vietnamese) and east is Vietnamese land. There are Stone curving in Chongqing China just south of the Yangtze of Lao people whose houses are built on Stilts that go back 2000-3000 years ago, called the Nanping Lao, recorded in Chinese manuscripts. They mainly lived by rivers, which tend to flood, which is why the Lao Loum are basically the actual ethnic Lao people who live by the rivers in Laos today, who pretty much forced the indigenous peoples up to the hills and mountains when they first settled Laos.

My friend in Vientiane is from this area (Som) we did the tour to see the dolphins yrs. ago, set foot in Cambodia and had a couple of Angkor beers. lol
We rented motorbikes in Pakse in 2006, took the road south till it dead ended then went right on a dirt path towards the river. Went past one of those bamboo pole gates with a guy napping in a little shack. Figure that must have been the Cambodian border cause the beers we bought before getting on the river dolphin boat were Angkors and the change for our Lao kip was Cambodian. Do they still have all the small bamboo hut bars and restaurants out among all the hundreds of waterfalls just north of the islands or is it more built out now?
They make those houses in Thailand as well, and Tigers have not been a problem in most areas for a long time. I think it is more for spiders, snakes, scorpions, etc.

Flood during the raining season plus it’s bloody hot upstairs so it makes sense to live underneath their house since they don’t have air conditioning
The reason the house are built on stilts is because of flooding and more coolers when it not on the ground.
