Great review! Thus far my only issue with this game is the online system. Past Monster Hunter games had a much better, more convenient online setup. This one is a mess. I hate that after quests you either have the option to return to camp or disband your party. Getting sent back to the very bottom of your hub as opposed to getting sent back to the gathering hall after finishing a quest is just a nuisance and makes you sit through way more loading screens than what should be necessary. It ends up making the online feel way less connected with your fellow hunters. Everybody tends to opt to stay in the main hub neglecting gathering hall because it's just too much of a hassle to bother with. I really hope they patch it in the future.
Exactly. This game is 2 steps forward and one step back. The online UI is abysmal and really just incomplete. I can't imagine being able to score this game above an 8 in it's current state, even if everything else was perfect. How does a 3DS game have a better online system?
Just an fyi, don't actually get separated from your friends when you go back to headquarters, you are still in the online server with them. If they post a quest it shows up on your quest board. You can also go to the gathering if you want to be "with" them. The fact you can't start from the beginning of some story quests is definitly annoying.

I actually liked the fight with the Zorah Magdaros. I guess that it's only me, because I liked the fight with Lao Shan-Lung and Shen Gaoren too, and both of them are normally considered boring. I know, I'm strange

I know Ben is kinda new to MH but i wanted to point out that fighting two monster at the time is not.new for the series , The whole concept of the devil jho(introduced in tri and the first dlc monster announced) was that he was a nomad that hunted other monsters
I really hope this game gets the attention and sales it truly deserves. It’s an amazing gaming experience that’s not your generic FPS and isn’t bogged down by micro transactions. This game and its developer deserves all the praise they’re getting!

I LOVE this game. I've loved previous Monster Hunters, but they did a great job with this one. Never before had I just enjoyed randomly running around in expedition for hours on end like in MH World
The God Emperor Never have I enjoyed going gathering more in Monster Hunter, and never have I smiled while enjoying the little things like feeding a Great Jagras meat near a sunset.

I love this game no matter how many times I face this monsters It feels fresh and they still surprise me with their actions and events that occur. For example I beat rathian like 30 times and he still feels fresh especially when rathlos shows up to help him lol. I got recked lol.

Exactly like other MH games, its fun to do quest with friends. If you do multiplayer monsters gain more health, you can join "campaign" quest with friends but you have to wait until all the cut scenes of that mission are done before you can join. Still having a blast, me and my friend beat each mission alone and then join and complete it another 2 times together to make sure we get all the parts we need to make full gear sets.
gorecreaper The multiplayer system is an absolute mess. For a game that encourages co-op, it's a joke. I haven't seen another game with a more poorly implemented system.
MP is a complete and utter shitstorm. Most medieval design system for a game so heavily based in co-op that I have ever dealt with. I'm now playing the game solo because we gave up dealing with the BS you have to deal with in order to play together.
Minst_Meat im sorry but that is just frustrating. You should be able to play through everything together without the millions of obstacles that the game puts in your way. Its 2017. And this games MP experience is ancient.
bicboi555 the game isn't for everyone, most people expect it to be a hack and slash type game when it's very slow paced and requires good positioning. But of course the game might not be for you but try to stick with it a bit longer and see what happens. If you got questions let me know btw
I was afraid as hell that the game would try to appeal to casuals becoming easy and empty as hell like that destiny 2 shit last year. I've played the game since freedom 2 and I'm happy to say that this is the most polished and best iteration of the franchise. It's a fucking masterpiece in every way and it's even harder than its predecessors. If you're on the fence, DON'T BE, BUY IT RIGHT NOW!

The game opens with Magdaros and it’s the driving force of the plot, but to say it’s fights are boring is not a spoiler. I’ve only played a few hours (I’m only rank 6) and I’ve already come to that realisation myself.
Is it good single player? I don't know anyone interested in it, or with time to play it. Also, the beta was underwhelming, are the hunts in the full game more involved than 20 minute stints where you follow the glowy fly things and then hack and slash? I was hoping to have to properly track the monsters and have to learn weaknesses and strengths.
kif1983 The Beta was definitely more geared towards series vets like myself, letting us get a feel for the game. The hunting quests are usually 50 minutes long, but expeditions (where you just go out into the area) are unlimited time, so the limiting factor is just you and your supplies As for the gameplay, the combat's depth is determined with the weapon you choose, the way you play, and the monster you fight. If you are using a Sword & Shield, it's much easier but less in-depth than a Lance or Charge Blade or Switch Axe. So far in my playthrough, the single-player can stand on its own, but its always more fun with others, even if you can't talk to them. CONCLUSION: Much better than the Beta. Great game. Fun as hell to play, especially when compared to the handheld games.
kif1983 I've barely touched multiplayer so yeah- I'd say it's viable. Also I don't know about complexity but I do know that the Beta was grossly shortened. I've had hunts with only seconds to spare out of 50 minutes total, and I love it.
You should have given it the 5 stars it deserves. That 4 and a half feels like a cop out. Like you didn't want to feel like explaining a perfect score to people. Well if a game deserves it, it deserves it.
Over all I think this was a good game but there are somethings I would change. First being the online setup. To fix it just used the old setup from tri/4U which was 10x better. Second being make the game harder. This game is to easy compared to older ones and the only time I had a challenge killing something was nergigante WHILE using low rank odogaron armor but as soon as I got better armor he was ez. lastly there is not enough monsters in this game. Would of rather had more monsters then better graphics
This review seemed great at telling someone who has played other Monster Hunter games about it, but fell a bit short for someone with no knowledge. What's the basic gameplay loop like? How is hunting monsters different than any other 'go kill this thing' quests in an MMO? You mention nuance with the weapons, but give no examples, so it's hard to understand it's impact. I don't feel like I really know much more about this game than before the review, other than it's god a bad story and dumb final boss.
just a quick answer as a veteran to all the questions you have - gameplay loop for main quests largely resolves around missions of hunting the specific large monster (in a boss battle). side quests exist as a way to build your settlement and upgrade your facilities. expedition mode also exists as sort of an open free roam open-world mode - Monsters in this game are the main draw because they aren't just bosses. they are animals that interact with the ecosystem. They eat smaller monster, have nests, hide in different environments and so on. - nuanced weapons like charge blade have different modes that can be accessed after certain conditions are met. those give you new moves and additional effects such stun damage or elemental damage. some monsters are weak to certain types of elemental damage. another example of damage effects is that stun damage can also exhaust the monster and make their movements sluggish. - also seems like zorah magdoras is more like a mid boss then a final boss
HazeInTheRoad the game play loop is craft, hunt, kill, craft stronger equipment from the materials from your prey. That's pretty much it in the most basic terms. The fun is all of the craziness that can happen while hunting, and the depth of the things you can do with your weapon. Which over the course of a 60 hour game you are bound to learn how to use. As although you get better weapons as you go, the moveset per weapon type is always the same.
I remember back in the days when MH, would get bad reviews by guys like GT, IGN, Gamespot, etc. now it's across the board a review hit. MH have come a long way, proud of it.
I'm going through some of the podcasts from last year. Ben did you finally get Huber to play. Also, did your dream happen? "AH! BEN! I'M ON IT'S BACK! I DON'T KNOW HOW I DID THAT! HELP!" XD
The fact that capcom removed the ability to discover new monsters with your friends like in almost every monster hunter before is a serious downgrade to multiplayer. That being said. the best way to get that multiplayer experience is now based on optional quests which allow you to essentially farm the monster. They give you more and more as you progress so id almost recommend people to not attempt multiplayer until they were almost through to high rank. The systems for joining others are also cumbersome and not intuitive so learning this will also take a chunk of time from your gameplay. I am guessing this review was done before multiplayer was put some serious time into because these are large detractors from the game. I have seen many people quit this game due to the botched multiplayer and inability to share in discovery with friends.
What's with the gigantic spoilers about that mega boss? Isn't that the final story boss or something? I guess it helps to warn people expecting something awesome.
It's not even the climax of the game, wait till you see the boss monster after that! Zorah as a boss is pretty boring if you play solo, with friends it's quite fun since most of the time your chat while doing the fighting. Later bosses your chat will be literally: he is going for the ONE SHOT! LIFEPWODER! GET YOUR FLASH POD! DIVE NOW!

kif1983 I've barely touched multiplayer so yeah- I'd say it's viable. Also I don't know about complexity but I do know that the Beta was grossly shortened. I've had hunts with only seconds to spare out of 50 minutes total, and I love it.

You should have given it the 5 stars it deserves. That 4 and a half feels like a cop out. Like you didn't want to feel like explaining a perfect score to people. Well if a game deserves it, it deserves it.

Over all I think this was a good game but there are somethings I would change. First being the online setup. To fix it just used the old setup from tri/4U which was 10x better. Second being make the game harder. This game is to easy compared to older ones and the only time I had a challenge killing something was nergigante WHILE using low rank odogaron armor but as soon as I got better armor he was ez. lastly there is not enough monsters in this game. Would of rather had more monsters then better graphics

This review seemed great at telling someone who has played other Monster Hunter games about it, but fell a bit short for someone with no knowledge. What's the basic gameplay loop like? How is hunting monsters different than any other 'go kill this thing' quests in an MMO? You mention nuance with the weapons, but give no examples, so it's hard to understand it's impact. I don't feel like I really know much more about this game than before the review, other than it's god a bad story and dumb final boss.

You summed up my feelings as a newcomer.
just a quick answer as a veteran to all the questions you have
- gameplay loop for main quests largely resolves around missions of hunting the specific large monster (in a boss battle). side quests exist as a way to build your settlement and upgrade your facilities. expedition mode also exists as sort of an open free roam open-world mode
- Monsters in this game are the main draw because they aren't just bosses. they are animals that interact with the ecosystem. They eat smaller monster, have nests, hide in different environments and so on.
- nuanced weapons like charge blade have different modes that can be accessed after certain conditions are met. those give you new moves and additional effects such stun damage or elemental damage. some monsters are weak to certain types of elemental damage. another example of damage effects is that stun damage can also exhaust the monster and make their movements sluggish.
- also seems like zorah magdoras is more like a mid boss then a final boss

HazeInTheRoad the game play loop is craft, hunt, kill, craft stronger equipment from the materials from your prey. That's pretty much it in the most basic terms.
The fun is all of the craziness that can happen while hunting, and the depth of the things you can do with your weapon. Which over the course of a 60 hour game you are bound to learn how to use. As although you get better weapons as you go, the moveset per weapon type is always the same.

This series is super popular in my country. I finally gave it a go with XX on the Switch. I can see the appeal but personally I avoid grindy games.

Now how about that PC version Capcom.
The fact that capcom removed the ability to discover new monsters with your friends like in almost every monster hunter before is a serious downgrade to multiplayer. That being said. the best way to get that multiplayer experience is now based on optional quests which allow you to essentially farm the monster. They give you more and more as you progress so id almost recommend people to not attempt multiplayer until they were almost through to high rank. The systems for joining others are also cumbersome and not intuitive so learning this will also take a chunk of time from your gameplay. I am guessing this review was done before multiplayer was put some serious time into because these are large detractors from the game. I have seen many people quit this game due to the botched multiplayer and inability to share in discovery with friends.

Erlaxis that huge boss is the first monster you meet in thd game. And you face it again very early in the game.
It's not even the climax of the game, wait till you see the boss monster after that!
Zorah as a boss is pretty boring if you play solo, with friends it's quite fun since most of the time your chat while doing the fighting. Later bosses your chat will be literally: he is going for the ONE SHOT! LIFEPWODER! GET YOUR FLASH POD! DIVE NOW!

You never were able to get throwing knives in any monster Hunter game period. You can only get them as quest items.
You don't , they're too op so you only can use them when the game says you do , thats why you can't bring them back from missions
