Loved the rhythm of this review! The pace of information delivery and music selection was really deserving of praise. Of course very nicely written too !
Just finished it. Went way beyond my expectations. Would love to see the battle system tweaked a bit so it's not so easy to lose ATB on skills when you get interrupted by an attack or mid-battle cinematic. Also magic is sluggish and easily avoidable by moving enemies, which was what I didn't like about Crisis Core. Would be good to have a more homing missile approach to magic so that doesn't get wasted too.
Yeah, it gets annoying to have your skill interrupted and wasted if enemy attacks. But we can do the same thing to enemies by using skills on them... so it evens out and adds a new layer of strategy in combat.
My copy got delayed and I've been seeing FFVII everywhere and I hate it since there are so many spoilers out there. Today I'm finally getting my game, so I came here, at 5 am to check EZA review in anticipation to playing today! So excited, these guys are the ones I trust the most when it comes to reviewing.
This review is unbiased? When they gave 10/10 to a trailer showing little more than the back of cloud's head? Yeah right. These guys are all products of the playstation era except for bloodworth.
I have a feeling that the open world aspect of the next installment is gonna feel right at home with the new playstation 5 SSD. Seems like a match made in heaven.
I think it should be more like FFXII honestly. Zoned areas. Or maybe something like DQXI. Either way, going _too_ open is a recipe for disaster imo. People may criticise linearity, but at least a linear game - executed well - has focus and structure. The problem with FFXV is that its open world was far too barren. There's no point in exploring if there's little to discover.
@@jsh020 I think developers have really been held back when it comes to open worlds strictly because of the technological restrains. Once you add Things like streaming assets in dynamically ( this time around much faster and with much more fidelity) you can see stuff like Horizon zero dawn become a reality. What developers should truly take a note of , is populating the world with quests that have an undeniable personal touch of the writers and artists working on the project. It is why the witcher 3 is the game of the decade for me . Not because of the technology , but the dedication and love put into the details. I just hope the next generation will make workflows like that easier.
You know I always like that I can tell what the score is going to be before it gets shown to me. Shows the writers do a good job of conveying how they feel about the game.
omensoffate "I hate the game and you should hate it too. Good reviews are just fanboy reviews" and this is why we will never take you haters seriously. This is the mentality of 95% of the haters of this game who didn't understand anything. Just hating to hate. Sheep.
I don't see why would they, the trailer suggests that they have all retained their original personalities, Cloud is still as emo as ever, Barrett is still the same, same as red, etc.... Story is obviously a bit different yes, but ultimately it's still telling the same story.
This is real game journalism. I've been with you guys since the Gametrailers era. After Gametrailers shut down I realized how bad so many other reviewers (IGN looking at you) are in comparison. I was so happy to find that you started up again with this channel! Thanks for the great work you guys keep putting out!
This is the very first 3D Final Fantasy game to be given a remake (not remastered like FF12, FFX, FF8). Final Fantasy 3 and 4 were also given remakes but they were originally 2d games. Steve Burton was originally going to reprise his role as Cloud Strife for the remake. However, due to his voice not matching a younger version of the character, he was replaced with Cody Christian. His voice over work on the game can be heard in the PSX 2015 trailer.
We are a professional review outlet. ;) I've personally been at this for 25 years. The video editor who cut this has been doing reviews for about 15 years (more stuff before that), and the writer has been doing reviews for four years. -Bloodworth
Combat in the previous game was not turn based. It was command based. In turn based RPGs all action stops when it’s your turn and you can’t be attacked ie Skies of Arcadia. FF7 was command based it can be your turn but if you hesitate long enough your opponent can continue to attack you.

Everything I ever wanted had in this remake. Such a breathtaking game. Story and characters are just perfect. Easily my personal goty. Can't wait for part 2.
I'm 5 hours in, not skipping a single side quest since they really add something to the characters. Loving it so far. Original FF7 is my all time favorite game. Main characters graphics are on point, rest of the game is good looking/okay. Looking forward to the next part on PS5. Soundtrack is so great! Also love the remixes. I mean chocobo hip-hop? Fire! 9/10 for FF7 fans for sure, for everybody else I'd say 8/10 max. Nostalgia does play a big part here. One negative: I was reminded of FF13 level design more than I initially expected (Midgar only, linearity makes sense and was expected). If you just want to relive the story with beloved characters this works out perfectly fine.
@@poweredman Kind of. But this is also due to the fact that this first instalment of the remake takes place in Midgar only, so no open world and so on thus linearity does make sense in this case to some point. This is just my subjective initial feeling I get from it, so don't worry about this. One would probably not create a game like this nowadays but since I also want the game to stick to its roots I'm okay with this and I'm really looking forward to the next remake part with open world. Actually with the new PS5 on the horizon and what we know about it now, it makes even more sense to me to have the Midgar part as a separate chapter. I assume the new hardware capabilities will help to realise a worthy FF7 open world map (I don't expect to be able to fly around the whole planet lol.... would be nice though...).
Thanks for this review. It's to be expected that this will divide people, but the other review I read for this game had me really depressed. Glad to hear your positive outlook on it!
Hopefully once the entire game is fully finished and released Square fully remasters FF8, which is personally my favorite out of all the ones I’ve played.
@@Jenema2 Pretty sure he/she means the entire FF7. Not just Midgar section/40+ hours. The "whole" game. Playing as Vincent and Yuffie and Cidd and Red XIII etc.
@@Jenema2 Midgar isn't even 20% of the original. The last episode oft this remake won't be out until 2027 to coincide with the launch of the PS6! Look how long it took Square to produce just episode 1 of this project. I'm waiting for this to go on sale
9.0 is honestly really good for a day 1 version of a game. Personally, I'd say the PS5 version (which fixed just about all of the problems mentioned in this review) + the Intermission DLC expansion brought up the score of FF7R to about 9.8... Adjusting for the fact that "10/10 stands for a perfect game, but no game is perfect", you may as well say the PS5 edition is a 10/10 experience as far as I'm concerned.
What about characters emotions?!? I mean, Barret here looks more human than the OG. Look his expression when he tries to go back for Biggs & Jessie and realizes the "truth". I said barret but everyone's amazing telling the player more without words. Also Cloud's melting progression feels not rushed , even at the end he is not even how Cloud is at the End of OG, so pretty nicely donde there too! ON THE OTHER HAND. Whisperers of fate was a terrible choice to bring it on this game...
Pablo González part 2 will really make or break the whispers of fate. It wasn’t all too bad for now but look SE just milked the part 2 off me already rofl
Why do I know this voice? Who is the narrator? Is that Brandon from Gametrailers? Wow. Awesome to hear the voice of that famous retrospective do the review for this game.
Haha i know its a little thing, but this game makes it seem so odd that cloud walks around with his sword at all times. Like, hes just ridding the subway with a 6 foot blade. Or when hes climbing a latter and it looks like thw person below him is going to get stabbed in the face
@Águila701 yeah, the gun arm is pretty conspicuous, but at least he can hide it under a cloak. Cloude literally wouldn't be able to sit down or even kneel down with that buster sword
@Águila701 nah, i avoid trailers, most times in case they spoil stuff. Thats why i avoid most review channels too, but easy allies is usually pretty good
Hate Barrett's sunglasses, dude lives under the plate... Barret just comes off overdone IMO, I really hope there is a costume to make him look more like he used to.
The voice of the reviewer is from Gametrailers back in 2007 or something, so cool bro. Nostalgia on point. Final Fantasy 7R blurry walls and all bugs have hope gets fixed with patches.
GarnetDagger Highwind Easy Allies was formed by employees of Gametrailers after their parent company shut them down. Brandon Jones is the VO but not the reviewer, as indicated at the start of the video.
@@zacharybyus5487 Thanks, it's just that i watched Gametrailers back in the day, and hearing his voice reviewing this timeless masterpiece is nostalgia all over haha. With patches they will fix those bugs i trust.
While it might be well known, it’s worth mentioning that the game has a classic mode. Your section on combat made it sound like the old gameplay was removed in favour of the new style, when in reality classic mode is still an option.
Classic Mode is not the old gameplay mode, it is just an automatic battle mode that plays the game for you. It's still in real time and is actually detrimental to the game.
I will never understand why some games wont let you play on hard mode for your first playthrough. Why is it expected that i play the game twice in order to get the experience i want at the start.
Hard mode prevents you from using items at all and resting at benches only restores HP. Plus, all enemies get buffed. It would probably be impossible to do on a clean file since you won't have Revive.
(SPOILER WARNING) I finally understand my conflicted feelings on this remake. I initially gave it a high score and was only upset with the ending at first. But now, I realised I had only gave it a high score due to nostalgia and love for FF7 and its iconic characters. Nomura used this remake, teased us with all these memorable events that took place in the original, making us believe it was following the story we know, giving us hope..all to use this as a platform to build yet another convoluted story of his own. Sure I can accept the ending and another new story. But Zack's fate should not be changed as much as I love him. You cannot change the past by having changed the future, that is beyond ridiculous. Unless we assume Cloud and the others went back in time when they fought the Whispers. Still pretty silly since the final segment just throws all of this at you.
xKeNniii I knew nomura would fuck it up. People hated on me when I said he should have stayed way. He fucked up versus to the point a new director had to come in so it didn’t become vaporware. Kh2 was amazing, I couldn’t even get past the first stage in 3. Replayed 2 instead. Shame he’s going to run this into the ground as well.
Thank you for the great review as usual. FF VII was is one of my favorite game and I'll buy this remake as soon as it will be available on PC. The only negative aspect I see from this review is that you have only 4 playable characters.
I don't think it's the PS4. I think it's the coding/compression. There is nothing in this game detailed enough to be making that amount of pop-in. The levels are really small, the backgrounds are flat, the animation is very context locked. Compare it to something like Spider-Man or even Kingdom Hearts 3 which looked and ran better without being in HDR.
@@sugs0377 Yes and no. HDR mainly effects the way the TV processes the colors. What it does is make lighting engines look a lot more color accurate than non HDR making for crisper and more appealing images. So, for KH3 to be made with like half the storage, have bigger levels, less pop-in, no HDR and still run smoother and look overall better than this is just bizarre. Sure FF7 have some highpoints, but it makes no god damn sense it is the size of Red Dead 2 in storage. That is poor optimalization.
My only teensy-weensy gripe about this game is Sephiroth being shown too early. I liked it better when he was still a mystery that you constantly heard about but personally knew nothing about. Not until much later.
The thing about Final Fantasy games, is that reviewers always praise the new entries just to realize months or years laters that maybe they were wrong about the score they gave it. Remember Final Fantasy XIII getting 9s and 10s ? Remember Final Fantasy XV gtting GOTY nominations ?
Final Fantasy XV got GOTY noms? I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, but still. I'm cautiously optimistic about this, though. I can get behind the multipart release in theory, and at least you pay for each installement as they come, instead of all at once... But if they could just give a HINT as to WHEN AND HOW MANY!
Don't forget that both those games also had scores below the 60's as well from certain reviewers. Who would've thought different people have different opinions :P. I'm not really sure who you're referring to that might've back tracked, but Easy Allies are pretty consistent and stick to their scores. It also happens sometimes that a game will get a lot of media praise, but it won't resonate well with some people (see Death Stranding). It's all subjective. Have you tried the demo for this one? It should probably give you a good idea if you'll like it.
I'm a lucky dbag who got an early physical copy in store last week, just finished the game, thank you for this review. You spoiled less than the rest, and to hell with the rest. Sometimes people want to check a review out but still go in as blind as possible, even the ones who wisely do not watch trailers of games or films.
The bad taste in my mouth begins right after the only perfect part of the game, until right before you meet Aerith for the first time. I don't have enough adjectives as to how bad it is. Square won't see my money again, simple as that.
@@TheGameVerse won't spoil it for you, and it heavily depends if you played the original, and what you cared most about it, namely from the story. The main message of life and death, and the meaning and power of the death of someone you love is completely destroyed in this remake. P.S. in almost everything else, where it only expanded on the original, was really good
@@smashingwarden i miss the blood man...there are so many things that i feel people should be criticizing but I can't find them anywhere...just everyone praising it.

The heart and soul of what made GameTrailers great still lives in Easy Allies. I love that you are still here giving us these amazing reviews.
I would much more prefer a straightforward 1-game remake to the point that I'll easily wait for a sale for this one. Still, the big decision aside, Square has clearly done a terrific job here
Loved the rhythm of this review!
Just listen, but don't watch. Best way to avoid spoilers.

Love your reviews. By far the most unbiased and well balanced. Also having Brandon Jones narrate every review is just the best.
This review is unbiased? When they gave 10/10 to a trailer showing little more than the back of cloud's head? Yeah right. These guys are all products of the playstation era except for bloodworth.
i literally waited five years for this review.
You guys have always had the best video reviews, hands down. I'm so glad you all decided to stick to it after Game Trailers shut down.
I have a feeling that the open world aspect of the next installment is gonna feel right at home with the new playstation 5 SSD. Seems like a match made in heaven.
Hopefully it avoid open world entirely, highly detailed hub worlds are always better
Ugh, like FF15 open world? No thanks, I will take this any day instead.
Nobody semi open. I don’t want empty space and horseshit side quest fillers.
I’ve been cautiously optimistic but this review made my anxiety about the game melt away, absolutely cannot wait time play later this week.
This is a fanboy review. This game is an absolute mess.
@@omensoffate Yeah only the 6.0 reviews are totally legit right?

Superlative review as always!
Insightful and informative.
The good thing is that they didn’t downgrade Tifa’s personalities.
I don't see why would they, the trailer suggests that they have all retained their original personalities, Cloud is still as emo as ever, Barrett is still the same, same as red, etc.... Story is obviously a bit different yes, but ultimately it's still telling the same story.

“New” characters like Johnny?
I was about to say the same thing lol
yeah right? c'mon guys i thought you were FFVII fans.
Since Johnny wasn't an "obligatory" character to talk with, they must've missed him when playing the original lol
My nitpick too. How could anyone forget Johnny, he was the linchpin of the game :p
Oh there’s actually plenty of new characters who weren’t in OG. They don’t mean Johnny.
The quality of the review puts other professional outlets to shame, very well edited and produced

Not interested in reviews for this game until I've playet it myself. But I'll try to remember to come back and watch this.
this is a very un-spoilery review though
game is great modern and refreshing something different then the norm
Combat in the previous game was not turn based. It was command based. In turn based RPGs all action stops when it’s your turn and you can’t be attacked ie Skies of Arcadia. FF7 was command based it can be your turn but if you hesitate long enough your opponent can continue to attack you.
Richard Legarda that’s why the remake is legendary, it’s action based/command based
This review made me cry... DAMN YOU SAD EPIC MUSIC! 😭🎶

This sounded more like a 9.5, the game looks amazing and I cant wait
This felt really good to watch. Thank you for all your hard work!
Loved how the ending clip showed all the soldiers seeing Cloud set off in the train. All those soldiers are us, watching the game go into release and the future, and wishing the best for FFVII.

KingNosser Appreciate it bro!
Everything I ever wanted had in this remake. Such a breathtaking game. Story and characters are just perfect. Easily my personal goty. Can't wait for part 2.
Love you guys! Great reviews as always
Wait, seriously? FFXIII level design? So this is basically FFVII with FFXIII's skin?
@@poweredman The original Midgar was quite linear as well.
FFVII og midgar part is linear. They expanded it in the Remake. Sigh.
I assume the new hardware capabilities will help to realise a worthy FF7 open world map (I don't expect to be able to fly around the whole planet lol.... would be nice though...).
edited initial post a bit since I messed up writing on the phone. The FF13 mentioning came out a bit wrong ;P
Thanks for this review. It's to be expected that this will divide people, but the other review I read for this game had me really depressed.
Glad to hear your positive outlook on it!
XiongGou the important thing is not to believe every review you hear and to just play it yourself!
Hopefully once the entire game is fully finished and released Square fully remasters FF8, which is personally my favorite out of all the ones I’ve played.
The game IS finished, its already out in some countries. There's gonna be more games in this series so I wouldn't expect FF8 anytime soon.
@@Jenema2 Pretty sure he/she means the entire FF7. Not just Midgar section/40+ hours. The "whole" game. Playing as Vincent and Yuffie and Cidd and Red XIII etc.
SgCy this is no where near finished. More like first 5 hours stretched into 40.

Well didnt they say stats and all carry over? Maybe the hard mode is also higher lvl mobs?
Hard mode prevents you from using items at all and resting at benches only restores HP. Plus, all enemies get buffed. It would probably be impossible to do on a clean file since you won't have Revive.
@Nobody You pretty much need to be level 50 with weapons and materia maxed out to have a chance of beating it. Cause checkpoints are also removed.
This was awesome review from Easy Allies. Thank Brandon!
(SPOILER WARNING)
I finally understand my conflicted feelings on this remake.
NGL the ps5 version is going to be fire.
Since the ps4 really struggles with texture pop-ins.
Yeah, might just wait the extra year tbh. 🤔
@@HermanFalckHow does HDR effect performance?
@@sugs0377 Yes and no. HDR mainly effects the way the TV processes the colors. What it does is make lighting engines look a lot more color accurate than non HDR making for crisper and more appealing images. So, for KH3 to be made with like half the storage, have bigger levels, less pop-in, no HDR and still run smoother and look overall better than this is just bizarre. Sure FF7 have some highpoints, but it makes no god damn sense it is the size of Red Dead 2 in storage. That is poor optimalization.
Same here. Got my ps4 version but going to get again for the Xbox sex
I’ve been waiting for this!! So glad that Brad liked it, I’m so hyped!!
See you in 20 years for the complete edition.
fingers crossed
Great game. The ending is vintage Nomura and left a bad taste in my mouth, however. The guy just can't help himself.
The bad taste in my mouth begins right after the only perfect part of the game, until right before you meet Aerith for the first time. I don't have enough adjectives as to how bad it is. Square won't see my money again, simple as that.
@@smashingwarden reason?
Seems amazing to me so far..
@@TheGameVerse won't spoil it for you, and it heavily depends if you played the original, and what you cared most about it, namely from the story. The main message of life and death, and the meaning and power of the death of someone you love is completely destroyed in this remake.
