- Why does your car audio amp keep going into protection mode? Here's an update to a video I made a while ago. If you've got a lot of voltage drop you might need a High Output alternator. This free protect mode fix might work if you own a Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, or Suburban. LINKS ↓↓↓↓

I recommend 0 gauge wire for large car audio installs.

I had this same issue in my 2008 silverado your method fixed the issue with my amps going into protect but the truck would only charge at 13.8 volts and the battery light was on i figured out how to make an adjustable voltage regulator for like 10 bucks and set the voltage at 14.8 (or whatever voltage you want between 11 and 15.5) and also keep the charge light from coming on super easy and cheap
Please post a video on this guy's need to know how to do it. Is it a 128hz 5V PWM signal generator you can adjust the duty cycle to?
@MattsShop yes exactly I don't make videos but you should. You have a way bigger reach than I would and your video is what got me started on trying to come up with a fix for the issue and as far as I can tell there isn't any videos about it on TH-cam at least not that I've been able to find I can give you all the info I have and show you what I did
Can you send me the info im very interested on this
Hello, do you know if it will work on the older 99-02 four wire alternator?
Pretty clever, never heard of a issue like that before. So when the bass hit hard it would affect your charging system & the truck would die ? If so might a capacitor help? Just thinkin. Real cool you figured that out to begin with. I probably would have gotten a bigger hammer lol.
My sub amp would go into protection intermittently because it would draw too much power. The alternator would bump up the voltage to try and help, sending the amp into protection mode. I hate car audio capacitors. It took me forever to figure out.
I did this mine a GM truck S10 chevy but it kept my batt from charging and it died out but it helped with keeping the amp on but doesn't keep my batt charged and it's a 2 wire
My battery has stayed charged like this for 8 years, no lie. It works well. Maybe the S10 alternator doesn't put out enough juice?
@@MattsShop sure does it's a brand new 300amp alternator
I have a 08 Chevy with a DR44 it has 2 pins and I felt when I disconnect it the base was a lot harder it so now I’m worried ima break my subs how would I know what’s the limit on it ? There kickers comp 10s each of them have there own box and the amp is a skar 1200watss
i know this is old but about to try this on my 2015 chevy equinox... i have a taramps 5k 2 12's tuned to 30 hz always cuts out on the high bass.. and just started recently gonna buy a new battery and try this. i have 0 from alt to bat and bat to secong bat in back and into the amp the 0 gets hot in the back for sure so wanna try it.
update DOES NOT work on 2015-20 chevy equinox lt 2 pin alts lol will be ordering a alt soon and or we have a generator shop 20 miles away that will beef up the alts for a 1$ an amp so 250 it is!
2000 Chevy silverrado
Bro I have the 2006 Silverado 5.3 and just this Saturday put over $1,200 into subs box and amp Rockford of course and as soon as it hit 15 volts charging from alternator it would go into protect mode and fkn made me angry but found your video and unplugged the two pin and dahhhhhhhmmmmm it worked and my subs pound and I’m still gonna upgrade my alternator to a 250 amp cuz I was told these stock alternator had trouble with the voltage regulator anywho thank you for the temp fix with the 2 pin! unplugged my amp is putting out 13.8 volts so good to go just deal with the battery light witch is no issue at all
You're welcome. This exactly why I made this video. This is a good temporary fix for people with Silverados that have this problem. Yea, definitely get a good high output alternator to fix the problem. You really need to have an external voltage regulator to set the voltage where you want too.
ok I have to ask is this entire video and comment section a big practical joke or something ? unhooking the alternator exciter wire to fix your obviously complete amateur hour install problems? you are disconnecting that wire and also preventing your alternator from charging !! I mean this is easily the dumbest damn video and comments section I've ever read !!! 15 volts and your fosgate amp goes into protect huh ? which amp is this ? Because fosgate dyno tests every amp they sell and it says right on the birth sheet its voltage tested range and it's always up to 16.5 volts !!! and fyi amps do not put out 13.8 volts its not an alternator nor is it charging your battery and you definitely do not need 250 amp alternator!! funny thing is I have a 350 amp alternator with full 0 gauge nvx ofc power and grounds with 2 full river 140 amp hour sealed agms im idling at exactly 14 volts maybe close to 15 in the mornings and im running 2 fosgate t1500 power series sub amps each rated certified 1900 watts rms each and t1000 x4ad 4 channel amp running 4 t2 5.25s 4t2 6.5s 6t2 1inch aluminum dome tweets and 4 t1 silk dome tweets and 4 ct sounds start 10s rated at 1300 watts each rms and after 40 years of building literally a thousand systems not once have I ever had to disconnect my alternator to fix my shitty amp that is going into protect mode!! the problem is 100 percent in your instal! or whatever swap meet louie amp you are running stop spreading total nonsense because it only creates more bad experiences and problems for people who actually want to learn how to build real nice systems !! maybe you could disconnect the brake lines because the brakes are squeaking !! that would also not be an issue at all ha ha wow I feel stupid now because I read and watched this!
@@glenramsey73 for one thing be a dick somewhere else!! We do this so we can learn thing not everyone is as smart as you and know everything or we’re you just born a dick? Yes my amp has protect mode if my alternator is giving more than 15 amps so it don’t blow up but of Course you know everything so you tell me you bc let me know what’s wrong even. Though I got it fixed a while ago you tell me what’s wrong
Whatever happened to your shed that you dismantled?
It's in the works. Finishing up my ATV rebuild first.
I believe that voltage output is my problem and i drive a big rig
Is your big rig a 24 volt system?
@@MattsShop i believe my system is both 24v for star and the way the batteries are set up, and 12 for basically everything else
My amp is going on protection mode i have a 2011 honda pilot
This didn’t work for me and my 0 gauge wire is only reading 7 wtf
Only 7 volts? That's not good. Check your grounds out!
So basically the that wire sensor is to tell you if your alternator is out or not
Pretty much. It raises and lowers the voltage to make sure it's good.
@@MattsShop but won't die out the battery will still continue to charge forsure ? Same truck votec engine mine just a Chevy suburban 1500 2003
It helped me bro thanks
You're welcome!
This is what they sell caps for.... Does suck we can't get die hard batteries anymore, real ones anyway, they were the best.
I think of caps as bandaids to a poor charging system. There are other good batteries out there like Northstar, but they are $$$
Capacitors are made for roughly a 30 second interval of discharge....after that your electrical system is going to work twice as hard to try to charge the battery to keep everything running and try to feed the capacitor...your best bet is to run an extra battery you will see far better results then a capacitor
Thank you so fucking much
