  • John Reardon shows you step by step how to inspect a vintage Patek Philippe. Using a magnificent steel ref. 130 from 1938, John explains the Collectability inspection methodology to carefully check the case, dial, movement, strap, buckle and crystal.

John, an absolute must viewing for anyone interested in any vintage watch in general and a Patek Philippe in particular. I recently bought a vintage chronograph at auction and used all the pointers that you outline and your acronym. I am delighted with my purchase…John you are completely selfless in your enthusiasm and your energy.. greetings from the UK.

Excellent system! First time that I seen anyone use plastic when using a knife to open a case back makes so much sense and works like a charm. Wonderful chronograph exceptional condition must have been well loved. I agree on being ready to make the purchase on the spot. A good deciding factor is the answer to the question "find another one?".

Thanks for watching Dominick! I think we all have stories of wishing we pulled the trigger to buy a watch... from 10 years ago plus to last month!!

As a confirmed Patek fan I appreciate pretty much every video you make - I do kinda wish you could give us a little more macro imagery of the details though. Especially on this beauty! Just a thought.

HOW I BROKE MY PERFECT 60S PATEK IN 30 MINUTES. I followed all of this advice and read as much as I could find about my all gold gorgeous patek philippe vintage Calatrava. I checked everything and it was as new. 27 460 M automatic movement. Gorgeous. And I heard it was one of the best made. Wound easily and set the time no problem. Then I gently pulled out the crown to set the date. And it came right out of the watch. That's when I learned that the date is set by turning the hours around past midnight dozens of times to set the date. Omg.
Ooops. Big surprise. Thought it would have the feature that's in my vintage submariner and day date..... My fault for thinking patek philippe would have this rolex feature on an automatic movement. Lol.

C.D.M.S.W.C.B = Collectibility delights most strongly (in) watches (with) cork boxes! 🤓
(Kidding aside, that ref. 130 looks sensational.)

Do the markings of the stamps make a big difference on the value of the watch?

John, the point you made at the end about moving fast is important. With many pre 80's/90's models there are not many examples that are on the market. Unlike rowleks submariner. If you miss it, you may not see a similar example (condition etc) available again.

Thank you for your comment and you are right that if you miss a watch, you may not see a similar one again!

One other observation is that on the face the printing says “Patek Philippe & CIE, Geneva, Switzerland”. The E on CIE looks like the center line of the E is missing or barely visible. Finally, the I and E is smaller than the C and is underlined with the underline starting somewhat to the right of of the I.

I saw a watch repairmaker, raising the watch with his hand with the face of the watch pointing downward and looking at whether it continues to work or is there a defect. I asked him about that and he said, im looking at the balance spring weel does it work When we turn the watch upside down.

My friend paid $5000 for a Patek Philippe Pocket Watch. I know nothing about Patek Philippe or any watch for that matter. Whether or not the pocket watch is real it has no crystal. Don’t all Patek Philippe pocket watches have crystals and again even if it’s real wouldn’t the fact that it’s missing the crystal greatly devalue the watch. I just feel like he got ripped off, but what do I know.

Feel free to email me an image of the watch. These days even a Patek pocket watch with a missing crystal is often not a bad deal!
