hey caridad :) you should make a video on your experience with the competency test & board exam because i’m super nervous for both!!! i loveee how informational you are in your videos, they really help!
I got hired for the RBT position. To be honest i have no clue when it comes to working with people with autism but i read about it. Im not comfortable going to people's homes because some people's houses can be disgusting. I live in New York city so it is very rare to find a clinic location to work.
So does your BCBA give you a daily schedule/ program of what to implement with the client everyday? Like how to do know what exactly to do each session.
Remember HIPPA DO NOT EVER Download or view client profiles Before your first introduction. Even if the manager tells you to. Things change and they could cancel the day of your introduction. 1. Always study the client profile after your first session. 2. Always make sure you have a 3 plans of your day to include options to run programs 3. Always be 10min early. On introduction days he 15min early 4. Remember you will always need At least 15min to set up your session 5. ALWAYS DO SESSION NOTES BEFORE YOU LEAVE! 6. VERFIY schedules with the RBT & BCBA AKA managing tech Not the family. 7. Have reinforcers with you and SMILE, don’t pressure or force anything, provide them options to cue them to make decisions, be comfortable, showered, have clean socks and shoes incase family requests no shoes, make sure the home has WiFi and that you have your supervisor contact ready incase they don’t.
I am actually waiting on getting a case, and it will be my first time ever as an RBT. During the first session, we are basic jist meeting the family correct? Does the analyst ever go with you? I'm so nervous because this is all new to me and I haven't been explained much .
That’s great ! During the first session usually you should be accompanied by the BCBA or BCABA. In this session you usually just meet the family and client. The first couple of sessions you do not implement any interventions , you typically just take data and you build rapport with the client. This is what I have experienced, but make sure to reach out to your analyst and clear any concerns you may have prior to your first session! I hope this helps 🤍. Feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns.
Meeting family is the introduction. First session will be you alone. Make sure you study the profile after the introduction and have reinforcements with you that cue the child’s interest Just in case.
Its a year late but I’ll answer anyways, the way it works its you get a case. If the case is too much for you you can ask to be moved to a different case.
Hi my first day of an BT will be Wednesday I am so nervous cause what if I forget everything I learned even tho I took a lot of notes I don’t know if we can take the notes with us!? What will happen
Hi! Fun stuff is definitely appropriate for the first sessions and future sessions. Building rapport is very important throughout your time with the client but it is crucial in the beginning stages. Definitely discuss this with your BCBA, I am sure they can provide many suggestions!
Reinforcements are used to give as a reward. Think of training a puppy to sit and when they do it you give a treat. All children have different reinforcements, and because they are children and growing, and changing their interests will change so the reinforcements or reinforcers will change overtime. Sometimes they don’t ever change, which can be rare.. The family usually has the enforcers at the home and centers will have them or should have them set aside for each specific client. It is really good to have your own reinforcer that is similar to the one that’s at home just as a back up or something that could maybe encourage them. Like say the item you have with you is bigger or newer. It would be entirely up to you if you got a more expensive reinforcer for a specific child to have with you, and then completely up to you if you purchase it and leave it for the child. If you do that do not ever ask the family if they’d like to reimburse you.
Hi Marie! I have been nervous about session because you don’t know how the family dynamic is, also a new client, etc. if I ever feel that I am unsafe in the environment I would definitely inform my supervisor. These are good questions to ask the agency you are working with and see what protocols they have in place for these kinds of situations. I hope this helped ! 🤍

Can you choose a client ? For example if you don’t want to work with aggressive behaviors , can you do choose who to work with ?
Thank you 💕

No but aggressive clients are not given to beginner ABAs.

Caridad,
Are reinforces/toys/fun stuff taken to the first session or after? 🙈

Are you ever afraid of in-home visits? Like how do you know if the environment is safe?

Hi, can you chose a family to work with? Like maybe you know someone beforehand ?
No it’s not allowed per insurance or HIPPA
