This waterfall dresser needed a modern makeover, so I started off by removing the tattered wall paper with the help of some vinegar and water. Soaking it for a few minutes made it scrape off without much difficulty.
My main objective with this one was to take the regular waterfall dresser style add a midcentury modern personality. Adding the classic MCM legs after flattening the base helped with this, as well as the handles that I made using some planks of scrap pine that were collecting dust in my garage for a while.
Let me know what you thought, and if you would have done anything differently!

The handles I made for this dresser was an attempt to turn a waterfall dresser into something more modern, but I stared at the final product for a while questioning how it looked. I'm curious of your honest thoughts on them; should I have kept the original handles? :o

As soon as you rolled the dresser into view, I was hoping you'd change the handles. They were way too far apart and ugly. Your treatment was perfect. Also, the beading had to go. Fantastic work as always, you might be my new favourite furniture restorer. Looking forward to your next video.
In my opinion the original handles looked better with the dresser. The new ones are great too, but to large and it hides the beatiful grain pattern to much
I loved the handles. However, I think they may be too dark? I wonder what they would've looked like stained a couple shades lighter? It would not stop me from enjoying this in my home, though. I watch a lot of furniture restoration videos here on TH-cam, and in my opinion, you are the best! Period.
The darker handles against the lighter wood make the chest especially good looking.
Keep the original handles for another project. This dresser came out so beautiful, always amazed at your creations.
No comments, no disturbing music, just a creative guy and a magnificent result.
You are one of my favorite channels here on TH-cam

Hey congrats on getting your channel back! I unsubscribed during the spammy bitcoin hijack, hate those guys. Take care! Probably would be a good idea to make a community post to explain what happened for your viewers. Again, happy to see you.
Oh thats What happened... ill subscribe again.
When you first started sanding the trim, I questioned the idea but love the choice now. It is easy to lament the decision made by another when reworking a piece to make it more modern, but it’s how things were done throughout history. Home facades were built and removed, gowns and jackets reworked to current fashion, paintings having things retouched are all examples well documented, and furniture pieces as well. I find the work that you’re doing without fault.
That was beautiful
I was about to comment something similar, but you put it in way better words than I ever could have.
This response is more eloquent than anything I could say.
Bravo! Perfectly stated.
For myself, I still remember when someone mentioned to Antiques Roadshow that they'd tried to sand off a decoration, and was told that if they'd gotten it off, it would have removed a lot of value from a very old little table. (the table was 1700s make, valued at $400k USD at the time) Make sure you know what you have before committing to something like that!
The 1920s, 30s and 40s are my favorite styles. Won’t lie, it was painful to see the pulls, trim and bottom silhouette removed. I do restoration and stay true to original because that’s my preference. Everyone has their own vision of what they love. It’s still a beautiful piece and if it makes you smile, that’s all that matters. Enjoy!🎉
Your editing is so good. I can't imagine all the work it takes to create such beautiful pieces of furniture, but then to go and spend hours upon hours filming and editing it all? So amazing
I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it 🥲
@@ModernMakeoversWhat you like more: restoring furnitures or editing videos? ;]
I would have kept the trim. I like old things to look old. But, you are called modern makeovers.😊
Was just about the say the same. I also like old ornate stuff, but really like what he does on his channel. I wish I had half the skill and talent.
I fully understand and anyway, appreciate the result!
Was going to say the same thing.
Oh, la, la! I should have trusted your vision from the start! It is just perfect. 👍❤️🛠️
The end result is AMAZINGLY beautiful. I do like the old trim, but there’s no way to argue with this result. Well done!👍🏻
You present 15 minutes of peace this morning 😊
I’ll make my next video the duration of your entire morning
Hear, hear. Peace, indeed. My only wish is for 15 minutes longer... or more ☺
The filmmaking bits keep improving! The screw undoing itself WHILE you reached towards it with your hand?? Immaculate!
No edits, just ghosts 🤧
Omg same, I was like how? Must have taken so much time to film and edit, such dedication!
Good job. I like that you take an older object and instead of restoring it, you bring it into 21st century. It no longer looks old but the character stays. I wish you could do that to people, I’m fairly antique.
Hahaha! Me too!
Channel name checks out.
So glad you got your channel back :D
Same feeling...
Who needs ASMR videos when we have this guy, amiright?! 😆 Stunning cinematography, and a wonderful transformation for this piece of furniture ❤
It looks incredible. I can't believe someone wallpapered it.
Well it did help preserve that beautiful veneer. But a pain to remove.
Granny has bad taste in wall paper, but excellent taste in grandsons..........
Personally, I couldn’t believe it wasn’t butter.
I have run out of words to give you compliments.
WELL TRY HARDER DAMNIT!
😆
The sticky paper was the inexpensive diy method in the 60’s. I love what you do with these old pieces. You have a great eye to visualize a fabulous trendy look. Plus, your video editing is beyond exceptional! Love your channel ❤
The 60s existed so that this video could be made 🗣️
Thanks so much :)
@@ModernMakeovers That is a great way to look at it! 👩🏻🎨
The THX sound! Theatre ASMR before anyone knew what ASMR was. 🤣
Nothing has quite beaten that thx sound.
🔊!!
Removing the trim was a really good choice. It’s magnificent without the trim and with the new handles. Modern make-overs, that’s what you do. Greetings from The Netherlands
Wait, that’s the name of my channel! Uncanny..

6:38 YAYY THEY ARE REUNITEDD
I absolutely love watching you create these amazing pieces from old and worn furniture. You are incredibly talented. This piece came out beautifully.
Excellent videos. Thank you for not assaulting your viewers with unnecessary "music"!
Your videos are so calming to watch, although I realize the stress you are putting yourself through. I love your work and your style of no voiceovers or music. The sound of woodworking is so relaxing. My husband is a woodworker and wants our cats to be his shop kitties but they prefer napping next to me while I watch your videos. They too get so relaxed by the white noise!
Grandma would be proud of the job you did on her dresser.nice.
,
To me you are one 😢the top restorers on TH-cam. I've watched every episode of your channel. This old piece was transformed beautifully into a more modern dresser. Fantastic work.❤😂 Can't wait for more great restorations from you.😊
THANK YOU ❤️
Love your work and how you re-imagine old beat up pieces and turn them into art!
As more of a purist, I like to see restoration over makeover. That said, I think you did a wonderful job of bringing out the mid century modern themes. And I'm not going to argue with your smoothing out that bit of trim. It made a big difference in the esthetic. 👍
I'm glad that mr and miss jar are together.
So am I… so am I.
You made it look absolutely gorgeous. And you took it from a 1940s style to a mid century modern design. I love it.
I'm an absolutely massive fan of the subtleties of your editing. The little rotoscoped bit where the leg passes over the wood chips and they're gone immediately is SO CLEAN.
@6:37 awww, you put them together ☺️
Also, whether or not the dresser looked better with more of the original appearance, I think you breathed new life into it regardless. And that’s pretty amazing, as per your usual handiwork.
Grandma did a good job of creating the floral effect for her bedroom. And, in the end it was easier than removing paint. Thank you, Grandma! Can you believe how that grandson of your can remove a screw? He's so grown up! And strong, too! Andy just has a gift for working with wood. I would have removed the trim, too. I hope you like it. Eek! I hope Andy isn't smoking! At least he isn't using obnoxious rust remover! Grandma, I bet this people who are all about "vintage" wish vintage looked this good! I'll go make some tea for us.
Really appreciate your editing skills, it's the small and subtle things that makes for a great video 👌
❤️
this is genuinely my favorite restoration/furniture makeover channels on here!! the subtly deadpan humor, satisfying editing, minimal commentary, and overall process is so pleasant to watch :-)
Such an artist. Finding and bringing out beauty in everything. Another amazing video.
I must say, that was quite a treat for my Sunday evening. I love how the dresser came out. The contrast in colors is perfect, exactly the way I like it. Thank you for sharing your talents with us, keep up the awesome work.
Thank you for spending your Sunday with me!!
It's hard to believe that anyone would have papered over that beautiful wood/veneer!! I was a little upset about sanding down that trim, but seeing the final result, I'm so glad that you did. The new handles really make a statement, and I really LOVE what you did with this entire piece!! I always comment on your videography, and I'm going to do it again. You are so talented, and creative, and I love the bits of humor that you add. This channel is one of my most favorites, and I will look forward to seeing what you do next.
I appreciate chu 🙏🏻
I have this exact same dresser. It was left at a rental we were in. My husband stripped it to bare wood and then used tung oil to finish it. That was 41 years ago. It's still beautiful. ❤ However, since seeing your video, I want the upgrade! Beautiful, love everything about it.
No words can explain the work that went into this stunning piece of furniture or should I say art…extraordinary!
Oh my goodness, I just rewatched the start and the end to think about the handles question, and realized you gave us a waterfall sound. It fit so well I didn’t consciously notice the first time. Well done. Re the handles, I think the old ones would have been fine, but the more linear effect you created is quite in keeping with nature, actually. Looks beautiful and will be even easier to use.
Good catch! Thank you for your kind words 🫰🏻
This turned out beautifully!! Great save on this piece 🤩👏😍
I always LOVE watching your videos. You are so respectful of the “disregarded” piece of furniture by bringing out its natural beauty. Thanks so much.
Nice job! I had that original dresser (without the paper on it), gave it to my sister who gave it to her granddaughter. The thing is a tank! If I still had it, I would do this to it. Love the new handles, glad the old ones went away.
Another beautiful finish! You amaze me, first with your skills as a master craftsman, and then your video editing is phenomenal. I enjoy your videos, probably more than anyone else because it’s not a whole lot of music or talking, just showing your beautiful work. Take care, stay safe.
Thanks so much :)
I really like the way this turned out. I like the contrasting wood tones that gave it depth and the handles were a perfect compliment to the round edges on the dresser. I think you definitely made this a more modern piece of furniture. Great job - you have a good eye.
Gorgeous!! Grandma would be Proud!
I'm not into modern furniture tbh, but your work not too modern, and I agree with you that the trim with looking old, and not in a good way, I think the right word will be outdated.
Great job, love your work ,always 👏
As if we would just sit back and watch?! We're your Support Crew, Andy! I honestly thought you were going to pour a 2nd cup of coffee and offer it to us. 😂
I think you made the right choice with the trim, it would have been out of balance with finished result. The trim has it's time in the spotlight.
I think the size and shape of the new handles is cool but maybe a bit dark? Maybe? I'm not sure. 🤷🏼♀️ Amazing result as always. Glad to see the sock made it's regular guest spot. 😂😂
I can definitely relate to needing some coffee to get started on this project. Just looking at all of the wallpaper made me want some, too!
I personally would’ve tried a restoration, but your innovative design is amazing. The tri-tone finish, the smoother trim, and the new legs and handles are a great renovation of this standard dresser.
You really are one of my favourite youtubers, not only do you have a great aesthetic eye and the patient and talent of a craftsman, you do it all without annoying commentary!
Your work is incredible! Thank you for taking us on the journey with you ❤
so happy you got your account back!! i love your videos❤
Really nice job, one of my favorite on this channel. I also saw new video editing techniques which are very well executed and pleasant to the eye. All this done with a good taste means this is one of my favorite channel here. You're talented, please keep doing what you're doing.
Regards from Poland!
Thank you from Canada ❤️
I LOVE every single piece of furniture you do. You turn everything into a masterpiece 😊
I just found your channel. I relax and chill out by watching craftsmen save, recreate and renovate abused furniture. Your work is elegant, precise the results are exquisite. The new handles are perfect.
Really nice. I wasn't sure how it was going to look on legs, but your instincts are good. The one-piece continuous wooden drawer handles really give it an updated unique look. Losing the beading was definitely the way to go. Now I can see the possibilities of what to do with an old waterfall chest I have taking up space. Thanks for posting.
I can smell the air wafting out of the drawers being opened in the intro.
This outdated and impractical trim got its upgrade with new handlers. Love it!
honestly the amount of work that goes into these videos is incredible. not even talking about the woodworking part, just the different camera placements, the little jokes, the video and sound editing, it's amazing. every time you put out a new vid there's some new shots where you didn't have to go so hard but you did!!! it makes the whole experience even more interesting and fun. it shows how much you love filming these vids. hope you keep enjoying it as much as possible!
I for one love detail on furniture, but i also have great trust in your abilities. It’s amazing even with the trim vanquished
The streamlined MCM/Deco makeover look you created looks very nice. I would have kept the original trim and restored the original design as much as possible--just my philosophy.
So right to remove the trim. What a beauty with all the different stains
I personally love the new handles as well as the color of the dresser itself. Your combination really pops and looks so modern. Love how you video now. You've come a long way since I started watching your videos, BRAVO!!! 🤓
🤓🙏🏻❤️
If it aint broke, don't change it.
Resto/mod only if the piece is no longer functional.
Art Deco is itself.
❤
That said 😁 this dresser was neither rare nor high value, any makeover that keeps these beautiful old pieces from the landfill, is awesome.
❤
Love, it. Good call removing trim and adding legs, it took this dresser to a whole new level!
Dear Andy:
Every time I watch your videos I get more convinced that you have the gift of story telling.
Combined with your wood working skills, your sense of humor and exquisite videography, the end result it is simply a pleasure to watch. 🤩🤩🤩
PD: There are so many things to say, but I will just mention that I didn't like the idea of removing the trim. However, the end result convinced me. You were right.
Another stunning piece. I would buy it in a heartbeat. 🥰
First off- I’m so happy Mr. and Mrs. Storage jar are together now! Second of all- WOW!!! You made this look like modern Art Deco! More Art Deco than Art Deco! Mo-Deco! The Odie’s Oil Dark was perfect as now it will get darker with age and look even more gorgeous! The handles are perfect! The removal of the beading was a wise choice! Everything about this is perfect! Love this- I freeze framed the reveal and couldn’t stop staring at it! Absolutely magnificent!!!
Yummy finishes! Handles really "elevated " the design.
Very creative and thorough work. Thank you. ❤
Splendid job! At first I was opposed to your sanding down the detailed trim but you made it work with the MCM theme. The legs you put on the piece worked well. You do nice work, I look forward to all your videos.
I really appreciate that he uses common tools for his projects. The outcomes are always amazing, and I learn much from the techniques. Thank you for your creativity, ingenuity, and risk taking. Go ahead and sand off the elaborate trim - make it your own!
So relaxing to watch, it makes me sleepy...believe me that is a huge compliment. Most channels clutter my ears with repetitive generic music, while yours is void of it, and that is part of the magic of your videos!
❤️
That trim had to go really! I love the simple designed mcm themed dresser with the angled legs and new handmade handles, great job!
I can't decide if you are a cinematographer who restores furniture or a furniture restorer who is a cinematographer. Either way love the content.
I hated that old trim. I was happy to see it go. Beautiful work as always 😊
Gorgeous! Grandma would be pleased.
So beautiful!!! I love the variety you choose to do. You never fail to make a piece absolutely beautiful! DDEcker
The camera work ❤️❤️❤️
I really like it gives an old piece of furniture a modern spin 👍
First off, I loved your use of / nod to The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" from Sgt. Pepper's. Bravo! Happy for Mr. & Ms. Jar. And, as others have mentioned, I was tickled you left that label in the top drawer. Your woodworking skills are a true talent. But so are your filmmaking skills. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I cannot BELIEVE no one has snapped you up to make films for them! Great job as always.
Thank you so much for your kind words :) 🙏
Definite 'wow' factor! I love the new handles - not sure I feel the new legs 'work' in combination with them. Removing the difficult to sand 'trim' left a much cleaner profile.
MM, you are amazing!
flattening the base and adding legs is the best part i loved the most just complementing sanding of the trim
Your showmanship and editing skills are really awesome. It brings another level to what you are presenting. Let's give a shout out to mother earth for that beautiful warm reddish butterflied walnut that we can no longer get. Gorgeous.
Babe wake up a new modern makeovers video dropped
1) glad the trim went, it did date it 2) I really loved the small pause before a good final thwack around 6:50 when you’re nailing in the boards for the legs…for absolutely no logical reason, it amused me 3) I would apologize for not helping…but that’s really on you for making it more fun to watch (aka I liked the interesting transitions you tried out in this video, very cool). But next time I’ll sit on the little stool and sand if you want lol and 4) Love the end result, I hope grandma isn’t too upset
Very tasteful refresh . Lovely job and love the contrasting handles
I loved the choices you did, the staines and alterations. And using Odie’s Oil! That finish is to die for, it’s so beautiful!
Your comments and editing made me chuckle a lot as well, your editing skills has gone thru the roof! 🙌🏼
I think if you want to call it a “restoration” you have to keep the trim, but then also the skirt and handles. What you did is, as the channel name says, a makeover - which is what we’re here for anyway. 😊
Welcome back! I was worried about you, after the shit that happened this week - I hope all is back to normal, now. Take care, and thank you for the inspiring uploads! They always leave me in a crafty mood..! Beautiful work. :)
This is absolutely beautiful! Amazing to think that it was covered in wallpaper. You saved it from an ignominious future at the dump! Loved the handles and the legs too. Great job👍
❤ Oh my goodness, grandma would be very proud 👏 of you.
I appreciate that you left the sticker in the drawer!
Soooo satisfying! Love the humor and quality production. Also wish I can buy the piece.
Grandma would be proud! Looks awesome. I agree with getting rid of the trim and adding the new handles.😄
I love watching your videos so much
Edit: just realizing I've commented only twice even though I've watched most of your videos. I'll have to fix that going forward
😊 Thank you!
Magnificent work, so beautiful. You’re so talented, so creative, filmography is amazing. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece with us. I look forward to every video.
I really like the new handles. They're bold, stoic, stately, and really give the piece a commanding presence.
I did like the old handles, but the new ones give it such a fresh modern look, and I like the contrasting dark stain on them as well. Since you preserved the original beautiful veneer woodgrain with the oil application, I think any grandma would be delighted if she could see it now!
As to the ornate trim, that stuff is hard to clean & refinish evenly, so I think the sanding was the right call for you since this is a hybrid update/restoration.
Great work, as always. Keep it up.
Omg the intro text, so cute
I’d love to help ppl with projects like this tbh, big fan of this stuff and would love to learn
Wow! I have to say it, I’m impressed. I love old furniture. I’m an antique nut but this dresser really turned out awesome. Loving the different color tones of the wood. You did a fantastic job on this sharp looking dresser now.
♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟
