020824 MAGNOOLIA FIRE TRUCK CRASH AND RECOVERY

  • A Magnolia Fire Truck was northbound on FM 1774 when a southbound motorist turned left in front of them onto FM 149. The truck was not running emergency traffic when it struck the female driver. The impact drove the truck through the intersection striking the concrete base of the traffic signal pole, shattering the concrete base, and crushing the bottom of the pole. The truck then continued on into the ditch striking a highway illumination light and then rolling over hitting a Centerpoint utility pole shearing it off. The pole-supported wires carry 38,000 volts of electricity. It was about 2:3-0 pm Thursday when a Magnolia Firefighter came over the radio asking dispatch to notify the chief they had been involved in a crash. He stated they were checking on the victim of the vehicle. With the calmness of his voice, it was thought a minor fender bender until he asked for an ambulance for the vehicle driver and one to transport the crew to the hospital. The first chief to arrive called for a rescue truck and reported the truck to be on its side. The right-seat officer was attempting to crawl out the windshield, the others were out. The female and all 4 firefighters were taken to Tomball Hospital. The female driver of the car was taken to surgery but was stable. Three of the crew members were just banged up, However, the Officer in the right front seat suffered a fracture to the hip/ pelvis and was being kept. All southbound lanes of FM 1774 were closed. Northbound drivers were put on FM 149. Local Goodson Loop was solid vehicles as motorists who knew the area tried to navigate around the scene. DPS investigated the crash. Precinct 5 Constables and MCSO assisted with traffic control. TXDOT responded to start repairs as did Centerpoint. It was after 8pm before Centerpoint was able to stabilize the pole so crews with Harshaw Wrecker and Range 3 Wrecker could start the recovery of the truck. Firefighters from other stations responded to assist in rolling thousands of feet of firehose from the truck. By about 10pm crew was able to set the severely damaged truck back on the road. The crew had been returning from the grocery store for to supply their evening meal after running a call. The groceries were in the back seat along with a dozen unbroken eggs. Crews will be working through the night to make repairs. One lane of FM 1774 southbound is open. Northbound are still being forced onto FM 149. Currently, right now firetrucks are in high demand. Large manufacturers such as Pierce are quoting over 800 days to build a truck. Many others are the same. Magnolia recently ordered three new pumpers from Spartan which will now need another one added. It could be a year on delivery,

as an engineer, you know the physics of this crash are crazy - they had to have a lot of speed on to twist the frame like that.

@@jmWhyMe Not really, at traffic speed hitting the first light pole that was set in cement then the ditch twisted the front of the truck. There is a lot of heft behind the small cab of the fire truck. Huge amount of weight on the back end of that fire truck.
I find it shocking how folks that claim to have a degree have so little understanding of cause and effect.
The fire truck destroyed a good part of a cement base. Please read the description, then repost your retraction.
Do you realize the fire truck are measured for how they are driven? They use accelerometers to track speed, cornering, and braking.

Thank you for your comment 😊 YES I was an officer rider in the early 80s. The driver out ran the sirens going through a "RED" light. We were going to apartment Fire as a second alarm 🚨 response. We were actually ( Code Green) before we got to the Fire scene. I had a BIG tailboard talk with the crew after we got back to the station. The guy driving a ( Resident FF) just thought everyone gets out of the way or "STOPS" wish I had pictures like this on drivers training. The added Wt. With the WATER in tank just making it crazy bad on a big engine 🚒 going through Intersection. All drivers no matter if you have NEVER been in a crash, can just please think about the Wt. And power you are in control of. I never let that Resident DRIVE again if we had a response together. I have had a Chief tell me to take out a FF and do drivers training. Watching him take a turn, and the big traffic control post was just inches from the side of our brand new engine. When I got back to the station I asked the Chief "WHY" he wanted to let this FF drive. He had told the Chief
"O" yes I know how to drive trucks.

I think what concerns me the most is the post-collision damage the engine took on the ride to the ground. It looks like the frame bent or broke. We had this discussion when buying a new engne. The frame size on the more expensive rigs is bigger and equates to the cost and type. For example, the lower end Pierce models are built with smaller frames. I don't know if this is the case with Ferrara brand pumpers (which this engine is) so I would be speaking out of turn to suggest that engine is a narrow frame. BUT , the rigidity of the rig would better protect the occupants in the cab. I hope the firefighters do OK.

Retired Fire Chief here hoping no one got hurt. It may be due to driver in car didn't yield or didn't pay attention like SO many we firefighters have had to deal with over the years. Also due to trying to avoid the car, the water in the tank got moving and caused it to flip. Several years ago the fire district 2 doors down from ours a pumper responding on a very winding road they had. He went to fast water shifted fast and he rolled it. He was OK. I'm glad the power lines didn't drop on the truck. Again I truly hope the crew and the car driver are OK.
All Brothers and Sisters of fire departments, please be safe, remember your training and go home every day. I appreciate all of you.

Thank you ( Sir) for your service in Fire Rescue 😊 a big YES let's all go home at the end of shift. As a FF you do no good at scenes if you don't get there safely or not. I like how the Department is spec. Out both big Federal Qs and electric Siren 🚨
On modern rigs. The Press brief by the Batt Chief said they were NOT even responding on an Emergency call. I do like how the Wt. The water end of this Engine brand moved and kept the cab basically intact. It tells me in my Humble opinion that the design on modern Fire rigs protect the crews. Thankfully the crew is OK according to the reports.😊 This crash tells me no matter what. The driver must always be alert to traffic around them. I was just driving my 1971 SeaGrave to fuel farm to TOP off fuel tanks, everyone coming at me were BEEPING there horns. At first I thought they were just giving me a wave. NO it was because a vehicle driving in my same direction was going into oncoming Lanes. I alerted this unsafe driver as he cut across 4 lane rode and turned in front of the oncoming 18 wheeler. My moral of that story is I did see what this crazy driver was doing out of the corner of my "EYES" My 1971 SeaGrave is NOT a response emergency vehicle it is just for show and tell, but boy have I witnessed really unsafe driving around me just driving to Events. I am very careful driver with my old girl 😊
She is my pride and Joy 😊😊

Many emergency vehicle collisions occur when they enter an intersection against a red light. Sirens and Horns are a technicality and do little to prevent collisions. If you crash as First Responder, you failed your duty to make it to the emergency, and instead, created another emergency.

@marcuslorensen8306 it WAS her fault- she turned in front of the fire engine, and the fire engine had the right of way. Not sure why you keep commenting that the fire engine was at fault because they were not running emergent? WTF??

@@marcuslorensen8306 If you are making a left hand turn and have on coming traffic coming towards you, yes YOU MUST YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY TO THEM and then make your left hand turn after the traffic coming towards you has passed by your vehicle. Read the description and learn from this example given to you.

Slow down Firefighters. It’s a wonder this doesn’t happen more often with the way I’ve witnessed some of them drive. Just because you have lights and sirens you need to obey the rules of the road.

The fire truck shouldn't have twisted like that. I have seen many semis in worse wrecks like that and the frames don't twist like that. I know fire trucks are heavy but they aren't as heavy as a loaded semi.

Perfect example of when the city should be able to bring charges for reckless driving against a citizen. If you have a license you should know the laws of driving. If you don’t then get the f**k of the road and take an Uber or a bus. Stupid people shouldn’t be on the road to begin with. They cause too many accidents.

The involved FD will be praying that insurance lawyers do not get involved. If so those four crew members will probably wind up charged with the kidnapping of the lindbergh baby in 1936. Insurance Lawyers in the US are an Apex predator.
