    Bao Living is preparing for change; by 2030 an extra 40,000 people will have moved into Antwerp's centre, driving demand for compact, affordable homes. The SAM micro apartment was built around Bao Living's SAM modules, a hybrid, modular cabinet system that encouraged a circular layout. Dividing the home into tailored zones and allowing the space to be transformed over time.

      Chris Babbitt I under stand What you mean, but I do not fully agree. If you have incorporated putting the bed back in you daily habit, you don’t have to think about it only takes 30 seconds. Best way to achieve it is buy using habit stacking. Let’s say you have a habit x you already do every day, then say after action x I will perform action y. After 14 you don’t have to think about it anymore.

      I had a murphy bed in a 2 room Brooklyn tenement flat. I'm a lazy person, but I never left it out, it so easily sprang back into the wall and gave me my large, sunny front room back! Having the bed installed allowed me to use a 11x7.5 middle room as a perm art studio. I'm now in 850 sq ft 1 br + dining room, but really miss that bed, even in the Covid lockdown here in Bklyn, I'm happy to live in one L-shaped room, haven't used my bedroom for weeks. I've been daydreaming about putting a murphy bed in my main space again; just realizing that one-room living helps my ADD a lot and cuts my anxiety.

    Small space design works best when it's tailored to the person(s) living in it. Anything more 'mass produced' will not make optimal use of the limited space. I think this is also what contributes to it feeling 'soulless' as some comments point out.

  • @1bwash
    @1bwash 4 ปีที่แล้ว +419

    Interesting, but when they talk about material costs and footprint savings, that all just goes to the developers. All these buildings, the condos and apartments still cost a premium and are "luxury." Average people can't afford these places and they're not actually helping in areas struggling with housing crisis.

    • @addbackwards
      @addbackwards 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no. Cuz as the city prospers economically, more and more people are coming immigrated and or moving to the city core. The housing needs go up. Supply and demand. Drives prices up. Even if they build more, more people will come.

    • @1bwash
      @1bwash 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Jess Cuz we’ll that was my point. They talk about cost savings and footprint savings but never say who that actually benefits. You build up these cities and small spaces that are very affordable for builders to build but then have the selling price driven up. So they have the profit margin, but it doesn’t address the fact that their are minimum wage employees who make the wheels turn in cities. Where do they live? When do they get an opportunity to buy or rent?

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1bwash they have to move outside the city. You sacrifice price for location and or space. It's a triangle of the 3 and its a matter of choosing. The supply and demand dictates and change things

    • @1bwash
      @1bwash 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Jess Cuz I’m talking about an ethical and functioning city which these designers and developers are trying to pretend they’re a part of. No, the answer isn’t, I demand you make my sandwiches for lunch but also piss off and move far outside the city because you can’t afford it. That’s not how things should work.

    Personally, I see corridor as the byproduct of an attempt to create the illusion of a full-sized apartment with different living zones through division of space, rather than a mismanagement of space. The SAM module is actually quite clever in the sense that it has elicited an apartment-living vibe in space with the size of a small studio.

    • @mmm59mmm

      It's length is especially a waste. having a ceiling high closet next to the door can add some sense of reveal and privacy (while u're paying delivery for example), but i would have personally made it less long and would have used the remaining space for an island kitchen. I love the design with storage, privacy, space saving furniture, a beautiful, private, modern bathroom, perhaps better than any other I have seen. Bright, clean and uncluttered with storage. Too many designs force a person to climb a ladder, walk right into the bed, or have no storage space. I wish I could afford it. I always thought that the fridge needs space around to not overheat. In that way the refrigeration system would be more optimal. That's what manuals says. I wonder if they leave a space in the back of the fridge and how that air gets ventilated.

    I wonder what was behind the decision to cut off usable space at the entryway? is it more about using two sizes of the system in this case?

    Dishwasher spaces in apartments always get me. I wonder if those can only be included for older people or people who really, really need them.

    Nice design and I like the materials. But I’m still not sold on modular units that divide a small space, making it seem even smaller. When everything is said and done, there still is no separate bedroom space. I understand the need for storage in a tiny apartment, but I’m not convinced that putting it against a wall still isn’t the best option. One thing I loved in this space was a comfortable looking couch that turns into a folding bed. But, once again, I don’t love the idea of a folding bed. What to do?

    I loved the first look into the small office more than the apartment. It is not bad, but impersonal.
