  • Once an underutilised narrow porch situated between two overlapping villas, Urban Cabin, designed by Italian architect Francesa Perani, is now a multi purpose space that acts as studio, retreat and guest house. The living area includes a 7m long bench for seating and storage, while also unfolding into two single beds and allowing the remainder of the home to be split into a generous bathroom. Drawing inspiration from Persian design, the cabin celebrates colour and texture with indigo blue accents, and recycled OSB timber throughout; lending a striking look to this multifunctional home.

I agree with the shower part but when it comes to the beds it's more of a cultural thing. It's pretty normal in many European countries (like Italy, as we see in this video) to have single beds that are only 80 or 90cm wide (31 or 35 inches). If you grow up used to that bed size, you don't really think it's small, just normal.

This one doesn’t feel very livable/comfortable. Even for guests or temporary accommodation a soft or supportive place to sit and visit would be nice. Hard seating like this is not inviting. Like others I’m not a fan of the OSB. Maybe as an accent but for me this is too much. I love the concept of the deep window seats but a padded seat would make it place people want to be. And personally I prefer a separated area to sleep even if it’s tiny. I might have tried to make a sleeping alcove somehow.

Very clever use of space in such a narrow place. The OSB on its own throughout the whole space is just way too much for me. I would have broken it up with maybe plastering (or even just painting) the back wall running the length of the space. I would also bring in some different colours and textures by adding pillows or long seat cushions to the window seats. I like the blue in the bathroom and the contrasting white, but that window in the shower should really be frosted since the screen outside won’t give much privacy.

All together the bed will likely be very uncomfortable. Of course it might be okay for a few nights, but any more will give you back pains and it's a sorry excuse for a bed in relation to this (over)designed space and a literal villa. I find the wall coverings, light and warm, nicely contrasted with that exceptional blue. Love this space. Intelligent use of an awkward, narrow area into multifunctional living for short stays and studio work. The mesh offers privacy from outsiders looking in (as evidenced by the camera footage) whist providing good views and light for guests. I would love to stay here!

I've watched thousands of tiny house videos and never have I seen a converted porch, let alone one as long and narrow as this one. The architect is brilliant. For a converted porch, it's amazing. A sitting place, sleeping possibility, kitchenette, bathroom and shower - everything fits! I like everything about it, except the material of the walls - even painting what's there would be an improvement. I agree with other viewers that there should also be more soft furnishings, colour, pillows, to provide comfort. Overall, an excellent solution to a narrow porch!

Agree and don't really understand the point of putting a kitchen in. If I was a guest I'd rather have a proper bed than a fridge/hotplate - are guests expected to cook their own meals when they stay here? I guess it's so you can also make snacks if using the space as a home office but it ends up being an uncomfortable spare room with no proper bed and an uncomfortable office with no proper desk chair, place for monitor etc either.

I know this tiny space is for niche purpose but I love how she contrast the earthy look of the wood panel with that blue, the result looks surprisingly cool and exquisite. Easily Airbnb worthy. Definitely one of the more standout deco I've seen for a while in this channel, thanks to the designer for thinking outside the box (the minimalist trend). Me likey :D
P.s: I just read comments and see some seems don't like it and I can understand why. This type of deco definitely not practical for real home purpose but to me this design is cool for its purpose. As this is not the main residence space, it's for the temporary guests staying. My 2 cents ...

thanks a lot for your kind comment. I do understand other comments too and I guess when I designed the cabin I did try to experiment a bit in order to give a comfortable space to the clients while investigating textures combinations. It is a guest house and the materials are pre-treated and durable many are mistaking OSB as the same one they probably have seen on building sites ;-) .

All things considered I think the designer did an amazing job fitting so much in, while offering an aesthetically pleasing design. Many commenters are forgetting this space was previously just an open porch, used for semi-open bike storage in someone's yard. It's only 289sqft, and most of that area is made up of length and low ceiling height. The cabin is only 16ft x 32 ft. It is not meant to be a full-time living space, and use is instead a retreat/guest house for the owners who live in a house where the cabin is located. With all the necessary custom work due to the narrow size, it would've been cost prohibitive to apply traditional finishes to the entire interior. The touch of color warms up the space and creates visual interest without overwhelming such an open and tiny floorpan. People forget that not everyone can afford the fancy interiors seen everywhere. Anything can be made incredible by a designer who is given a carte blanche budget. Please factor in the cost of materials, construction, permitting, and design services and fairly weigh your conclusions. Why can't we appreciate an aesthetic that's on the simply side, made with non-toxic materials? Kudos to the this designer who demonstrated her creativity on this project. I think this cabin was very well designed, considering all the parameters the designer was working with.

We've added grass to the roof so that it's green. We've installed this scrap piece of metal to provide the sense of privacy but have added holes so those who want to can see through it. This metallic fence warms you by reminding you that you're not just in a wooden box, but also a metal cage. The blue symbolizes sadness which reduces your bathroom time and thus saves water for fishes. The bench becomes a single bed and you will be forever alone.

I like the use of recycled materials and the green roof. I'm always impressed when the architect can fit a washing machine in such a small space. I think there is an over-reliance on the use of OSB to create a uniform space. The original structure has many interesting features, such as the brick colonnade and weathered concrete that could have been incorporated into the new space. The use of the existing wall in the shower adds much-needed textural variety. The window seats create visual interest.

It's most ironic when she talks about how she made windows to let light in and about the beautiful view outside, both interfered by this metal screen.
Also, you must be some kind of an exhibitionist to take a daily shower there.
