    Drum rudiments are the building blocks of drumming. The single paradiddle is one of the most useful we have right next to single strokes and double strokes. The drum rudiments are a language. Once you learn them, they open up completely new opportunities in your playing. But far too often I see drummer's half learning their rudiments. Never taking that step to apply them to the drum-set.
    This lesson is taken from a public livestream I did in February of 2018. In it, I show you a very practical and methodical way to break out the paradiddle so that you can use it in new and creative ways. The really great thing...the method I teach in the lesson works with ANY rudiment or sticking. I hope you enjoy the lesson.

    Without a doubt one of your best lessons in my opinion Stephen! I've caught lessons of yours over the years through Drumeo, TH-cam, etc but this one really clicked with me. The system you teach here is great and I'm looking forward to applying it to my learning going forward.

    This is exactly what I am looking for currently. My teacher introduced me to Paradiddles a few Months ago and my practice is already lacking just because I never know what to do with this thing behind the kit. You messing around in your zones looks so fricking simple, I'm jealous! Thank you very much for this lesson.

    Dang after I wrote my comment I took a couple minutes to scroll through the other comments and it seems I’m not the only one who recognizes your skills as an instructor! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TH-cam video w/ this many wholeheartedly POSITIVE comments. That by itself is an achievement. But with this kind of response from viewers, I hope you do private lessons and make bank doing it (top tier -per hour- rates would be 100% justified) because you deserve to be highly rewarded for being able to give people these precious jewels of knowledge. That is all I had to say. Have a blessed day bro! ✌️

    I actually learned application of the paradiddle in groove waaaay back in da late 60’s behind Gregg Errico n Sky’s You Can Make It If You Try. The drum break is a coldblooded paradiddle applied across what’s basically your zone 4.
    However this lesson is slick because it has this ‘system’ which becomes like a one size fits all thing across the rudimentary process. It adds or rearranges notes to create new permutations of the same thing. This diverging versatility is key because while I’ve had lil to no prollum applying the paradiddle life ain’t quite dat easy fo me othawise (i.e double strokes, ratamacues...etc). Stuff either lacks power/volume or it seemingly remains in my practice bag indefinitely soon to be a home fo misfit rudiments!
    I’ll keep working.
    You’re my friend I’ve never met. You n like maybe 2 other cats.
    You’ve all helped define and further elucidate things I’ve been playin all my life.
    Thanks always man!!!!

    Mmm, this is nice. I've been hitting about an hour a day/4 days per week but I do my warm-up and then kinda...wander around for awhile lol. I'm a creature of organization and this is an excellent breakdown.
    Question for you: if you're working on a new lick/groove, how much time do you spend on it before you move on to something else in a single practice session? To the point of fatigue, to a specific goal, etc?
    You da man. \m/ ( > _ < ) \m/

      To your question...I typically set a time limit for each item. If I get to the end of the time and I'm really making headway, I will them either choose to move on or stay on it a little longer. But for the most part, I split up the time beforehand amongst the items I need to work on so that they all get the attention they need.

    Totally relate to your opening comment regarding the "gig bag..practice bag" Have you ever found yourself in a gig situation, and the practice bag licks just come out w/out thinking? If I force something from the practice bag, more than likely I'll screw it up. When I'm warmed up, feeling the tunes, I'll notice those licks from the practice bag showing up. I also am loving all the Bonham stuff! He's the reason I picked up sticks, and growing up playing mostly Zep stuff, it really made me a more musical player. Learning tunes came so much faster to me as a kid. Now I'm breaking it down, and cleaning it up (thanks in pt to you). I feel if you can play Bonhams stuff as he played it, you can play just about anything.

    it was eye opening, finally got to see how this para diddle comes in to play that I practice over and over, Ive learned how to finally understand how to move around the drums and found out thats its ok to break up a para diddle and use different zones. its awesome Im not bored with the drums again and can be creative with this to no end. Just what I needed, thanks you so much im over a huge hump drums are fun again. Finally someone that could explain this to beginners in a way that made since, when just learning how to play you dont understand how a song is played on the drums you hear it but always new there was more but you explain the rules of how to bring it all together. ha ha ha not embarrassed when others can hear me play now, almost sounds like I know what im doing. Finally get to see and hear my own character and be able to listen and know its me playing or not in my way and style i like to play, you can start to become your own instead of playing what others play and comparing yourself to other music and using that as benchmarks of your skill level are over now. felt like the karate kid did learming wax on wax off with that paradiddle, practiced it over and over asking myself wtf am i doing this and where does it come in to play, not in a marching band so i now can see! Your awesome Steve. thanks for the GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT STEVE! Merry Christmas btw.

    In my humble opinion, the one thing that sets you apart from everybody else on TH-cam and even in real time, when you teach, your presentation is not about you, or even the student it's about learning how to play drum music and how rhythm, speed, and technique are cultivated, developed, and applied. Many of the so-called drumming gurus on TH-cam will tell you all about what a paradiddle is or even is not. Then, they play it and build up to speed and it's really all about look at me look how cool I sound playing this paradiddle don't you want to sound like me? That is definitely not you man. I think you should be a drum teachers teacher.

    Thank you so much for showing this process! This is going to prove incredibly useful.
    Let us not forget orchestrating the switching of zones through an established chunk. Do Zone 1 for the first half of the chunk, Zone 2 for next half. Split a chunk into a weird number of zones!
    (but at that point am I just taking a chunk and defining it as the sum of multiple smaller chunks, where each chunk stays in one zone for the entirety of a chunk???) ;)

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yea, You gotta start zonal mixing! That's actually the next step...I just didn't have time to get to it lol. Glad it proved useful!

    Unbelievable! Steven wants to give us as much “value” as he possibly can towards the end of the video! 3 things occur to me here. Surely you should only be concerned with value if people are paying for your services? His main point was revelationary in itself and I’m sure it will play a big part in my progress on this instrument! I don’t know how everyone else feels but I switched off around halfway through the video. It’s a lot for me to take in and it requires a lot of concentration over a long time. I reckon splitting it into 2 parts would’ve been a good idea....I just hope he is making plenty of money out of it but I have no idea how?

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I want to deliver value whether someone pays me or not. I want to over deliver if there’s money involved. Just the simple fact that you spent part of your day with me (in video form albeit) makes me want to return the favor of that attention with some type of value. So you have something to take away from your time with the lesson. And yea, this type of lesson takes a long time to go through. Split it in to several parts for sure.

      @@StephenTaylorDrums Thankyou so much for replying Stephen I dno how you get chance. I guess there are so many drum tutors on YT that you kinda have to go over and above to "stick" ( bad joke I know lol) in people's minds and make them want to pay you over anyone else. However, if people can get quality for free then they will! I still wonder why YT tutors don''t do say, half a lesson, then make the viewer pay a small amount for the rest? I reckon I would pay small amounts to all my favourite YT tutors as I learn so much on here :o)

    GREAT video/lesson! Just curious.... why are you starting with the snare drum in Zone 2, as opposed to the rack tom? All the other zones, you're starting with floor (Zone 1), floor again (Zone 3), hi-hat (Zone 4) and ride (Zone 5). Just wondering why the snare drum starts Zone 2. As a lefty drummer, I feel it's totally natural to start Zone 2 with my left hand (leading hand on the rack tom) as all the other Zones start with the leading hand that way. It's a little strange to start Zone 2 on the snare instead as the angle's a little weird. Thanks, Stephen!
