Well, hopefully without getting too much into the "Boo-Frickity-Hoo" of my life story, I just want to say how inspired I am bu this remarkable lady! I'm 56, played drums from childhood until my early twenties, and then, due to jobs, marriage, raising kids, living in apartments, then co-raising grandchildren, drumming stayed on the back burner for 36 years, even though I often tapped along with almost every song I heard. Dorothea One of the greatest experiences of my life was when I was working construction out in Florida the drummer from white snake in the bassist from iron butterfly own a bar in Dunnellon I asked them to let me come up on stage and play they made me wait all night but when I got up we played almost a whole set together it was something like six or eight songs it was one of the greatest happiest moments of my life As a drummer especially Enjoyable to play with real professionals I’ll never forget that moment it was amazing just thought I’d mention it since you mentioned iron butterfly
So true and inspiring. I practised the paradiddle so much when I was a kid. Now I mainly play guitar and it inspires me a lot for unusual picking and strumming patterns.
I just wanted you to know that when I first saw a Facebook video of you going to audition for the drummer position with Disturbed cover band and you inspired me to get a drum set at the age of 53! I've always loved the drums. Thank you for showing me the way to something positive in this world with so much going on. Your awesome!!! Keep rocking!!! ❤️❤️

It ain’t crazy you’ve got so many fans Dorothea. I watched you for the first time and had to subscribe. Most drummers wished they could play as well as you can. Keep the entertainment rolling for us. It’s Priceless
What she says at the beginning about only playing singles and no doubles or paradiddles is so true, I wish I had started branching out much sooner than I did. It opens up so much. I'm gonna watch the rest of the vid now!
As she said, she has music in her blood. The random song where she plays only paradiddles is convincing enough. Nice feel and great sense for the music. Beautiful.
I couldn't agree more! I wish more drummers understood this! I'm a drummer-turned-guitarist and since I have a history behind the kit, it drives me crazy to play with a drummer who just wants to roll and smash through the entire song!!! Any bass player will testify that it's sooooo much better to have a drummer who can carry a tempo, hold on to a beat, and stay in the pocket than it is to have a technical drummer who is all over the place!
Great video! Dorothea's lesson goes beyond "how to do it" and gets to "Why?" and " what?" ... articulating how this helps your playing. Going form mastering the rudiment to moving it around the kit is what most beginners seem to miss. I got there the hard way. Teaching it this way up front will help drummers get there faster with increased understanding.

My 6 year old daughter just started taking drum lessons, and I got to listen in on a lesson earlier this week and her teacher was just teaching her paradiddles. It seems so simple to me, but this video's really opening my eyes on how important that exercise is! How cool
I see that all kinds of players have been admiring this wonderful Teacher / Player. I'm 69 YO, and resurrected playing drums after over 50 Years of a Hiatus. It is in my Blood, for sure. Played in a garage band 1966-69 with HS Buddies, all of us learning our instruments as we went along. Took maybe 6-8 lessons back in 1966 at a local Music Shop in Flushing, Queens NY. Syncopation / Paradiddles were the order of the day ..... still is. I couldn't wait to get ona Drum set (that's what we called it in the day -not kit). Outstanding video, I've been a drummer for many years now and I've never heard any teachers explain the concept of inverted paradiddle or any inverted rudiment for that matter. Now it makes sense how they are used when dispersed around the set or used in beats. In all of his lesson videos, not even the great Dave Weckle explained it like this when he mentioned paradiddles and how to use them.
Dorothea is really spittin' out gold here to people like me who, despite knowing technically that a paradiddle is RLRRLRLL, was never actually shown how to apply it musically. Her 23:10 paradiddle example sounded so sweet yet normally would sound beyond my skill level. Which it was and still is because I've always been a single note player. But now that I see paradiddles with more clarity, I can start applying accents to them and stuff. I'm pretty stoked, I have had a new door to knowledge opened for me today! Dorothea Taylor rocks!
I like Dorothea's way of explaining the paradiddles. Not only for creativity, but it also helped yourself to be independent and playing dynamically.Hope one day you came to our country Malaysia, South East Asia for a drumming workshop.Love and greetings from Malaysia..!!
I'm 50, been playing guitar & bass for 35 years...so OBVIOUSLY...it's high time to get cracking. Seeing drummers like Ms. Taylor and my new sweethearts Nandie Bushell and Yoyoka Kaneai taught me that there is room for everyone on the throne.
I like how she plays, and how,she swings the sticks. I see many people play like they’re slamming the sticks, but this lady does it just right with just enough force. It looks very professional.

@@JoeMama-dl3nh OMG... that is the funniest post I have ever seen!!! Did you come up with that one on your own? Never seen that one before. Genius! I can't stop laughing!
This is a fantastic demonstration. I took her advice, used as inverted paradiddle, then swung it, split between toms, changed accents, used press rolls, doubles and flams as substitutions and made a great sounding short solo.
What an inspiration Dorothea. Learnt so much! Am now a subscriber. I've been practising on cushions & buckets for the last 3 months while saving up for my first drum kit. Thanks for the tips.
@@greatcolor Cool thanks for the advice. I've a history of buying stuff then not using it, tonnes of art canvasses for paintings never painted, fabric for designs never sewn, massage table for...massages lol. Anyway I was going to be sensible & make sure I had the habit of drumming 1st...didn't know about drum pads. Yay.
...Great information on practically applying this to the drum kit. NOW I see the importance of working on my rudiments! Now I see how to apply them musically while having fun with it! Thanks, Dorothea & Drumeo. Now, let's get back to the woodshed...
That’s David Garibaldi’s Future Sounds first exercise, permutations, accents and inverted paradiddles. So interesting. So much fun! And so very potent. Great way to bring the subject, well explained. Great job!
She just brings a huge smile to my face.....and she's a great drummer to boot!! And she's certainly right about the paradiddle. I learned it as mama papa mama papa mama papa mama papa.
You're amazing... I'm a 2nd gen drummer, inspired by my mom, who let me practice on her gorgeous 1960-something sparkle green Pearl drumset. When I was 13 got my own drumset, so we were able to jam side-by-side all through high school. Now in the process of getting my kiddo (who is already very musically inclined) into drums, for hopefully all 3 playing together.
She is brilliant, you can never get tired of paradiddles, theyre always exciting and challenging and the amount of different combinations are almost endless
This lady is awesome I am a 54-year-old grandmother who also plays the drums I started playing at the age of 50 and I love it! And I'm from Michigan and my maiden name is Taylor I wonder if we are related?
Paradiddles was what I used alot of. In high school while the band was practicing we would work on paradiddles I was the fastest. But you amaze me everytime I watch you. So smooth in your drumming. I started playing in bars and clubs at 13. I played all over the us. For 39.years But the reason I stopped playing was the last band I was in made it a job. People said what are you quitting for man dont you make good money playing, this is what people say, I said it wasnt about the money for me I loved playing, the money was just a bonus but that band made it a job and I was done. Was in drum Corp also. And I cant play with the left hand like that, buddy rich did incredible. Love listening to you play INCREDIBLE'. But just bought a new 7 piece Tama star series kit all maple rim mount awesome. And the new Alesis Electronics. No not playing just the 1st set of drums that will never be in a trailer or in and out constantly. God Bless you for doing this interview on paradiddles. I was always 1st chair and I preached it all the time. They are very very useful and are used more than people really think they. Keep Rocking, Keep teaching, Love It You Are An Incredible person. 😎🤟👍🤝☝️🥁🥁🥁🥁🙏🙏🙏🙏
Having drummed without private lessons (back in the day) I've learned to drum, for the most part) on my own. In any event Dorthia you just provided the missing link to my drumming (various ways to mix up the paradiddle and how to accent on various beats). My drumming has elevated because of what I just learned in your video. I just want to thank you for being thorough, clear, and to the point.
I've just watched an hour of Thomas Lang. He must be one of the most technically accomplished drummers on the planet - absolutely gobsmackingly amazing, fantastic, super impressive.... But ultimately, for me, quite discouraging. There was almost nothing I could take away from it - it is far too advanced and difficult, it just leaves me feeling crap about myself. Dorothea, on the other hand, most if us could take something away from, work up in a few sessions and actually use. For most of us she is a far more useful teacher.
You are totally right. Tomas Lang is one of the most talented drummer i've ever heard and believe me, at 47, started listening music at a Young age and being a drummer myself, Lang is really a beast. On the other hand, Dorothea is refreshing and so cool to see.
Thomas Lang is amazing, but Dorothea isn't a cyborg. She occasionally makes a small mistake, like clicking the sticks together or playing a 32nd instead of a 16th, but she still has 99.9% of her shit together. Op is right, it's much easier to learn from Dorothea, with no disrespect to Thomas Lang. He's so beyond advanced that you'd have to be Stewart Copeland or Danny Carey already to learn anything from him.
I see everyone is back to the rim shots on the snare for the accents. I think people should practice this because it is never EVER mentioned. It is not easy to strike the rim and the center of the snare at the same time when you are learning. I wonder why this is never mentioned on ANY drumming video I have seen on the net?
Some of my most favorite Led Zeppelin songs like When the Levee Breaks contain paradiddle variations. It was nearly the first thing my drum teacher taught me 45 years ago. It is a great exercise for loosening up and sounding peppy!
So I downloaded the paradiddle page that goes with this lesson on Drumeo and I now consider it to be drumming gold. It looks simple at first but once you play through all the inversions and get fluent with them, you will also notice the accents that are added. Playing those accents are FAR harder than I expected. I will be working on these for quite some time. Then I will apply them to the toms and cymbals. The final step will be making beats and fills out of them. This will keep me going for a very long time and actually indefinitely. All that from just one page lol. Amazing.

Did you come up with that one on your own?
Never seen that one before.
Genius!
I can't stop laughing!

i know something else that was influenced by cream .... ICE and yo mama
This is a fantastic demonstration. I took her advice, used as inverted paradiddle, then swung it, split between toms, changed accents, used press rolls, doubles and flams as substitutions and made a great sounding short solo.
Hey there! I’m 70 this year and loving playing again. Your such an inspiration!
my favourite rudiment of all time, so versatile, love it- glad to see a video on this, thanks! :)
This is a great lesson, thank you - inversions, accent shifting - I had no idea paradiddle drills could sound so musical.
I absolutely love her. She's amazing, great advice Dorothea!
I got more out of this vid-lesson than from viewing dozens of other tellings/showings/playings etc Im so glad I found this.
Man, I Love watching Dorothea Taylor. She is the Wisdom of Drums to us! I say!
What an inspiration Dorothea. Learnt so much! Am now a subscriber. I've been practising on cushions & buckets for the last 3 months while saving up for my first drum kit. Thanks for the tips.
Buy a drum pad if you can in the meantime, it'll be useful forever. Doesnt have to be one with a stand, just one of the big double-sided ones.
Great job!
Holly Molly!!! Madame, You are such an example to many people...respects and love for you...from Chiapas Mexico!!
This gal is awesome...Love her story..Love her permutations...Great percussionist 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Man that lady is cool! Her drumming is so fluid.... I’m speechless
What a brilliant video. I have never seen/heard this described and demonstrated so clearly.
For 39.years
But the reason I stopped playing was the last band I was in made it a job.
This is awesome. Thank you so much for your inspiration 😁🙏
Some things just make your day brighter. This is one of them!!!!
Find his clip on using Morello's open roll warm up for your feet. Spend a month practicing from 50 bpm up and comment back.
Yeah she does a good job of breaking the technique down to common sense. That's the sign of a great teacher and someone who really knows the material
The fluidity of her technique is artistic. This is like breathing to her.
I see everyone is back to the rim shots on the snare for the accents. I think people should practice this because it is never EVER mentioned. It is not easy to strike the rim and the center of the snare at the same time when you are learning. I wonder why this is never mentioned on ANY drumming video I have seen on the net?
Lunar Landing Discussions Extremely good point. I agree 100%
You are the best female drummer I have ever heard. Congratulations !
Amazing take on the accents. I'm floored. Love this lady!💪💪💪
The Brain: Your Book of Knowledge feat. Dorothea Taylor.
That paradiddle train beat was dope.
If you like that exact paradiddle, listen to Slow Train by Joe Bonamassa
Best paradiddle lesson ever now I understand thanks Dorothea!
Some of my most favorite Led Zeppelin songs like When the Levee Breaks contain paradiddle variations. It was nearly the first thing my drum teacher taught me 45 years ago. It is a great exercise for loosening up and sounding peppy!
Can’t help but smile watching this lady rock out! She’s smooth as hell!
Amazing.
She's a máster drummer! Wow! All this paradidle variations! And wow, the way that's she hit the snare , produce a gourgeous crack sound.
The Drum teacher I wish I had when I was in school in the early 80's.
Love it that you don't have to dress in Rock n Roll outfits to be a respected woman drummer.
If you can play, you can play.
HELL YEAH! Thanks for the lesson, keep inspiring women across the music world 🤘
Best video I've watched in a long time. Great talent!!
