    Gua Sha is a little bit like dry brushing for the face in a sense that it helps with lymphatic drainage when done correctly. It also helps a lot with water retention. My mom and I started doing it a few years ago and felt a big difference. Our faces seem firmer and less puffiness. For reference I'm 27 and my mom is 52

      So what's the difference between dry brushing and gua sha?

    • @Losshe
      @Losshe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@s.8186 They both help with the blood circulation and draining of the lymphatic system. Gua Sha is less irritating because the tool has a smooth edge. You can also apply more pressure with the Gua Sha tool. Dry brushing is good for the body(altho I have pretty delicate skin and even the softer bristles scratches it), but might be too irritating for the skin on the face

    I’m a Gua Sha tool user now for the past few months. I have to say I see improvement in my skin. People compliment me on how nice my skin looks. I’m 32 and noticed before this my face looked more uneven texture wise. Also less sinus headaches than before which is a plus.

    You don't need the special jade Gua Sha tool, I used to do body Gua Sha (neck and back) for my mom when I was a kid, started around 5-6 years old. We used a soup spoon, the type you see in most Chinese restaurants. We dipped the spoon in a small amount of oil to protect the skin. It worked perfectly.

    To viewers with acne:
    I would not recommend either one of these tools for acne prone skin. These tools can cause extra friction on the skin, therefore irritating existing acne and acne prone skin.
    Aja does not seem like she has acne prone skin, so maybe its works for her for increasing circulation, and possibly reducing her breakouts.
    However, for acne prone skin I would stay away from irritating your irritable skin more!

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  7 ปีที่แล้ว +164

      Gua Sha isn't an acne treatment but is good to prevent acne. Gua Sha will clearing clogged pores and control acne and pimples. This will help you avoid getting breakouts. If your acne is caused by oily skin, using Gua Sha can increase skin moisture, reducing oil production and improve blood circulation, which can affect and improves your skin condition 😉

    • @jennyl3080
      @jennyl3080 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Aja Dang Acne shouldn't be touched more than neccesary though. Pimple sores being rolled over with a hard object with preassure can make your skin a lot more irritated.

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  7 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      I totally understand that, which is why my comment explains how it doesn't help with acne you already have but prevents you from getting further breakouts.

    • @Emily-jb2uf
      @Emily-jb2uf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      Aja Dang That is a good way to put it! Gua Sha can increase blood circulation from the friction and movement of the jade on the skin. However, I don't think it regulates oil production or skin moisture. Our skin is composed of natural moisturizing factors in the stratum corneum. Our skin is kept healthy by keeping a healthy skin barrier, so using a pH balanced around 5.5 and using moisturizer, perhaps with ceramides for extra skin function.
      The skin will produce excess sebum in response to an unhealthy skin barrier, but if the skin has sebaceous glands that are naturally very active, both tools will do nothing to regulate oil production. Therefore, they cannot help prevent further breakouts caused by oil as there is no active ingredient that can stimulate the sebaceous glands in the dermis.
      So, the gua sha tool and jade roller alone as a tool only help increase blood circulation. I wouldn't advise it to anyone who is prone to acne as the increased blood circulation isn't worth the risk of irritating your skin.
      For acne viewers not suffering from hormonal acne, I would recommend finding a pH balanced cleanser around 5.5 (cosrx has one), incorporating a chemical exfoliant such as retinoids, azelic acid, or mandelic acid to help clear and maintain the pores, and a moisturizer that isn't too heavy for the skin but not light enough where you do not get enough hydration.
      Btw, I am not a physician, but a 1st year medical student with a passion for skin and maintaining it 😊

    Just FYI for anyone watching this who is going to buy the Gua Sha tool, she is doing it wrong in the video, you are supposed to hold the tool at a 5 to 10 degree angle (almost flat). Certainly she may still have benefits doing it this way, but you get more benefits from creating the skin tension of the tool when held properly.

    • @AjaDang
      @AjaDang  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you get skin tensions either way. The way I do it, which many Asian skincare professionals do the same way as well, creates greater tension then laying it flat on your skin.

    THAT THUMBNAIL THOUGH. 💚
    I am mostly Filipino with some Chinese (and Spanish also) in my roots. I can definitely attest to jade being important to my family's culture. My mother gifted a jade ring to me on my 18th birthday, just as my grandma gifted one to her.
    I didn't take careful care of my skin in my college years and now have dark (and I mean, DARK) circles and wrinkles around my eyes. I neglected moisturizing my dry skin and didn't sleep well. Recently, I've noticed even some wrinkles/folds on my neck. I've never tried jade rolling or gua sha but have always been intrigued by both techniques. Thank you, Aja for providing some more information! I think I may try gua sha for my neck.

      Same. My rose quartz roller broke in the freezer. Guess it was too cold, harsh for it. Only had it 6 months tho:(. Going to get a gua aha; it seems more effective and even comfy anyway.

    I've never heard of either of these (yes, apparently I live under a rock) but I am definitely going to look into a Gua Sha! Especially since I am now in my late 30's. Looks like it will be a great tool for my oily, aging skin. Thanks, Aja!! Oh, and you look stunning even bare-faced!

    I've only seen a demonstration using the flat side of the tool. You're using the edge. Doesn't the sharp edge have an effect on your skin? I'd like to try this, but would like to make sure I use it correctly. Thank you!

    Are both good for dark circles, and fine lines? I have acne prone skin (possible hormonal). Should I use an oil first, then the tools and then some Clearasil cream? Should I put eye cream on at the end? Thanks :)

    thank you for this video and especially for explaining why you start from the neck instead of the forehead! that confused me, since i thought starting from the top would aid drainage, but it totally makes sense now

    • @-norsecode-
      @-norsecode- ปีที่แล้ว

      It's absolutely incorrect. The proper way is start from the forehead and work down towards the lymph, which you were doing correctly before you were misinformed by this person.

    i've heard that some of these treatments can dislodge blood clots in the neck which can be really dangerous; is that true? i know my mom was going to have some treatments on her face and neck and her doctor advised against it. does anybody know?
