  • Should you "keep your eye on the ball"? The answer is yes and no. Here is an understanding of where to best direct our focus during a golf shot. Here's a hint, it's not on the ball it's on the target.

Edward...it is great to see someone keeping the teaching of Manuel de la Torre alive and well. Thank you.
I have a quick question and am looking for clarification - Manuel said of the forward swing to use the arms (upper portion) to move the whole golf club toward the target. He stated that one of the purposes of using the arms was to "retain the coil" (established by the hands in the backswing). Can you expound upon Manuel's definition of coil and how the arms retain that? Thank you.

An important characteristic of the golf swing is its nature as a "double pendulum'. The triangle formed by the shoulders and the arms is one pendulum that swings around the sternum. The club is a second triangle that swings around the wrists.
As you end the backswing the shoulder line is optimally perpendicular to your target line. The wrists have hinged allowing the club to be optimally parallel to the target line. The resulting folding of your right arm forms an effective "coil". As you swing forward you use the forward rotation of the shoulders and arms to begin the club traveling along the target line. As the arms arrive at parallel the speed of the swing begins straightening out the arm/forearm and the wrists begin to unhinge. This is the "uncoiling" to which he refers. It is an uncoiling that we allow to happen but do not "make" happen.

@@EdLeBeauCFIinstructor - Thank you again for your thoughtful clarification and concise description. When I first stumbled upon Manuel's teachings I was struck with how precise and thoughtful his communications were....and not in his native language to boot! These videos focusing on Manuel's teachings are very helpful. I began playing golf when I retired 8 years ago. I have been all over the internet looking for the "secret". I stumbled across Manuel de la Torre and have his book and video and have been amazed at how a good setup, balance, and being target focused have improved my game! It would appear that the "secret" may be focusing on the basics and doing them well. I do have a question however. When I am over the ball and focusing on the target, I sometimes wait too long to pull the trigger and I stiffen up. Do you recommend a swing trigger (is: forward press) and, if so, do you use one? Thank you so much and thanks for posting these videos!

David that is an excellent question and a subtle aspect of optimizing performance. Do this drill: Get a sheet of paper and a pen. Now slowly print your first name is capital letters. Pause after each letter. Don't read the next paragraph until you do the drill or you won't get the best understanding.
      Drill
      Drill
Ask yourself what triggered the printing of each letter. It wasn't something physical to get the pen to print--it was mental. Your intention to print the letter activated your subconscious which in turn sent instructions to your muscles to move the pen in a way that was in accord with your intention. You intention was to write the letter--nothing more.
Some players use a physical trigger to start their swing. Here's an interesting question--what starts their trigger. Answer: a mental intention. When I am at address, I hold a mental image of the club on target. Much like when you held the image of the "D" when printing. You got the D, I got the swing directing the club to the target.
That's the best I can do as a monologue. If this isn't adequate for you, consider ordering out teaching manual ( www.lulu.com/en/us/shop/edward-lebeau/club-focused-golf-instruction/paperback/product-1nzmnryk.html?page=1&pageSize=4 ) or contact me for an online Zoom lesson.

    Hi,
Do you please have any advise on the "swing thought"? I have made great progress with my swing--focusing a lot MDLT's teaching of throwing the clubhead over the shoulder and using the arms to swing the whole club.
My problem is that I do not have good impact on the ball when I focus on bringing the club to the target. Rather, I swing better when I only think of hands back, arms forward and just trusitng that my alignment is proper in order for the ball to go straight. In other words, I only think of swinging the club back to one shoulder and swinging forward to the other.
When I think of swinging the club to the target (almost like pointing it forward for a split second) , I find myself disrupting the natural circular motion of the swing. I hope that makes sense.
Do you have any advise? I want to improve my shot dispersion (Currently a pull or a fade), but I am having trouble when I think about club to the target.

The poorer shots happen when you "think" about swing the club to the target. That leads me to believe that your "thoughts" about that portion of the swing need to be refined/improved. Let's try to ensure that you know what swinging to the target is. Start at address. Let's call that 6 oclock. At this address position the shaft is vertical (not leading forward or rearward). The shaft of the club is perpendicular to an imaginary line from your left bicept to your right bicep. The grooves are also perpendicular to that imaginary line. As the swing moves forward from 6 o'clock to 5 o'clock the shaft and grooves maintain that perpendicular relationship. Then move from 5 to 4 o'clock. The shaft and grooves maintain that relationship with the imaginary arm line. At this point (4 o'clock) the shaft should be pointing at your target. The grooves are perpendicular to your armline and the results in the leading edge of the club (use an iron) to be aligned with your spine. The clubface is almost "toe up".
I am suspecting that your intention of swing to the target does not envision the club in this position. Work on this with no ball to start with getTING Use to your swing delivering the club to this 4 o'clock position as your progress from 6 to the end of your swing. When you get use to this then make some chip shots with a 7 iron (30-40 yards). Swing so you end with the club pointing at the target with the toe up. When you get this working then move to the full swing.
At address you should be hold the mental image of the club at the 4 o'clock positgion pointing at your target. Hold this intention for the duration of the swing.

@@edlebeau6763 I actually have been thinking of the image as you described in detail. However, I am curious about your opinion on this:
Should I be thinking of swinging the whole club TO the finish, over my shoulder, in the forward direction of the target.
Or should I think of swinging TO the target in the forward direction of my target?
