      Sadly the guard doesn't fit everywhere when you are doing maintenace in the field for example. I have broken ("exloded") a huge amount of blades but never gotten injured. Positioning in relation to the blade is also beneficial.

      And the cutting angles are wrong. If they want debris to shoot toward the styrofoam cups, they need to stab the pipe on the right side of the disc and from the other side of the table since the spin is counter-clockwise. (or flip the grinder over like you normally use an angle grinder). They did not think about centrifugal force. The guy ducking under the table is actually in the unsafe zone. This kind of shows how safe angle grinders are if the guard, stock, and operator are in the correct position. It also shows that most people and youtubers do not know about physics. Angle grinders are basically mini bombs. Good video though and slow-motion camera.

    Thanks for posting this. I was the safety rep for the metal smith and machine shop on my ship in the Navy. I didn’t want to scare the new people, but always tried to instill a healthy level of respect into the new guys when it came to tools like the grinder. In all of the years I’ve been doing this stuff, I’ve never actually seen one explode. Any injuries I had seen in person were from a result of kick back or people touching the blade because the guard was removed. It would be interesting to see a test where a cutting disc was plunged into a non ferrous metal to see it it would gum up and explode like the wheels on a bench grinder.

    • @spoofer20
      @spoofer20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They explode much easier when you go past the expiry date, the expiry date is printed on the disc. Especially cutting disks, I tried to use some that were 2 years past expiration date and most of them blew up as soon as you touched something. I was wearing full safety gear but it was still scary seeing the discs go shooting out.

For any not in the know, it's worth saying that there is a use-by date on the wheels (usually printed/stamped on the metal collar in the middle of the disc). Once past, it's a good idea to just snap the disc and put it in the bin. hth.

    the beauty of the guard is that you can clamp a piece of angle iron to the work bench , this allows hanging the grinder on the vertical angle edge while the blade is still spinning. You can quickly put the grinder down without waiting for it to spin down. Use multiple cheap grinders vs one good one and keep different discs on each. Bonus...zip tie a sharpie cap upside down to the angle...allows quick one-handed use of your sharpie without it drying out.

  • @PapiSmerf
    @PapiSmerf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah.... I've used an angle grinder a lot... Exploding discs don't scare me, wear a pair of safety glasses and you're okay, you'll at worst get a few scratches if it flies in the wrong direction and the guard is more likely to cause you to bust a disc because it obscures your view of the work and how you're hitting it. *"You're not using it properly if it blocks your view"* the trolls will say. Sir troll, I retort, you have never used an angle grinder on anything but a horizontal surface sitting on a table. Get over it.
    Super thick wire wheels scare me. Wire cups terrify me. I have scars from knotted wire cups that still hurt. I've had days where I had to spend 15 minutes in front of a mirror sorting through my beard to find wires from wheels that were embedded in my skin like little spears. I've had knotted cups grab 5lb pieces of steel and snatch them out from under a set of TIGHT clamps and chuck it at co-workers across the shop.
    Disc guards do nothing to prevent any of that. They just make it happen more often.
    Edit: Oh, and loose T-shirts. Loose T-shirts have almost gotten me gutted. More than once I'm ashamed to say.

Face shield yes, grinder guards no...not in the real world on your back, laying sideways, etc. They're always in the way. Video clearly shows how even flimsy styrofoam cups aren't damaged. Get over the worry wart "could be/almost/what if" and get to work already ;-)

    Here in Australia on building site etc a number of people have been killed by thin cut of wheels exploding without the shield on. Partly it is the speed these discs are designed for and being used at on the bigger angle grinders ie; the 8-9 inch grinders. Always without the safety guard on. Other severe injuries have occurred also.

    • @olavinto
      @olavinto ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm very very hesitant to use large ones without a guard because they are not very easily controlled. Small grinders can be very well used with one hand and you can almost always keep distance and position yourself away from the line of the blade, and I've had coutless of small blades break (some "exploding" too) but never had any injuries because of it. In the field there are situations where the guard prevents the machine from fittin and your only option is to cut without it.

    Nice video and good point.
    I think if you had stressed the disks on the other side (sparks flying away from the grinder vs toward it) the centrifugal force would have carried pieces out, instead of into the guard. Normally one uses the grinder that way, anyway. Super dangerous stuff.

    99% of the time it’s user error that causes a disk to explode or fly off. Just like your first break, you are putting a “moment load” on that disk which it was never meant to handle. Use good quality discs with no defects and use them how they were intended to be used and 99.9% of the time you’ll be just fine. Also, I run an ASME pressure vessel fab shop, probably at least 25 grinders laying around and not one of them has a guard on them.

    Cool test, don't die testing. 7:30 is similar to what happened to me about 25 years ago. I was cutting the floor pan out of a car to replace it using a die grinder at tight points. The cut wasn't finishing yet but the metal moved from the stress relief. The die grinder wheel caught the pinch and came to a sudden stop. A tiny piece of the wheel ricocheted off of something and grazed my cheek on it's way to my left eye under the safety glasses. Rushed to the eye doctor who removed it using a giant magnifier and a needle. It hurt for about a week but I fully recovered. Even when you doing the right thing sometimes you still get hurt.

    The cups are not marked or destroyed simply because they give way to the broken disc and fly with it. If it had been a very stable and heavy object or a person (or animal) the broken pieces would simply have cut its way through the object or body.
    The dis is not very large so the torque is quite low but the speed of the disc would have had enough force to permanently Injure someone.

Just goes to show how dangerous these things can be if used improperly, lots of people get hurt because they don’t understand these things can explode like that and seriously injure you or others around, also extremely ballsy sitting there making these wheels explode and not wearing any sort of PPE, come on man 😂😂😂 atleast wear some saftey glasses lol

    what is you have a too high rpm? maybe you can use a hand router fot the high rpm...

  • @Ms.Nightshade
    @Ms.Nightshade 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The grinding discs I’ve seen range from 1/4” to 3/8” and at 10 thousand RPM, things can (and will) happen...scary things.
    *ALWAYS* check the maximum RPM rating for each disc you use. If you don’t, it could cost you your life.

    I been using angle grinder cutting 100pc of hardened 6mm rod. I haven't had exploded disc . There's a technique how you lay the grinder wheel on stock, let it bite and don't push to hard let it cut it course.. even then I always use face shield regardless.

    Tu hai idee brillanti e hai un gran bel canale e sei un esempio da seguire visto quello che hai creato in poco tempo giovane come sei ma da italiano a italiano....il disco è montato rovescio,i dischi da taglio o da smeriglio o comunque i dischi ad impasto vanno sempre montati con il logo (le scritte) verso l’interno praticamente verso il corpo macchina mentre i dischi con widia il logo va all’incontrario cioè verso l’esterno in pratica come hai montato questi

    My brother in law had a 12 inch stone cuttingdisk split in two pieces cut through his t-shirt and cut a giant gash across his stumach...But also..the types of disks you used seem much different like the ones i have seen failed before...give the "dollar store" ones a try..

    _"Always uses discs that are high quality."_ My good man, high quality and Made in China are not two things that are mutually compatible.
    Thanks for doing the video 👍 and I really must get a good quality full face shield for when I use my angle grinder and the 1.5mm thick discs that I use.

    Of you use a cracked disc or a disc that is a bit broken they have a high risk of exploding or throw big chunks. Have happened to me many times.

      Does the hand guard prevent the chunks from hitting you?

  • @narancs5

    The test showed clearly that the danger doesnt arise when yor disc breaks on something. It is far more dangerous when it disintegrates on its own.

    I think a lot of the really serious injuries are due to kickback, where the guard plays a big part, but clearly catching shrapnel in the eye or arms could be catastrophic too. Has anyone ever had a flapdisk explode?

    • @Gopnik57
      @Gopnik57 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Graphic so read on your own caution
      Yes, it happend to me and around me, my boss warned us when we started out that no matter what to never remove the guard cover so we just follow this simple rule, 3 weeks later while working with the angle grinder the disc just exploded on me, simple work done it hundred times that day but that one just didnt want to anymore it skimmed my left pinky a bit thanks to my gloves it didnt do much and thanks to the safety goggles my eyes where protected aswell since some little shrapnel just flew everywhere but i can tell you without that guard id have some serious problems.
      The second time didnt happen to our crew but to another working on the same jobsite, they never used a guard and they didnt want one either, since we all went for lunch break together i asked them to put it back on but since i was 21 at that point and most of them where 30-40-50 ish they just kindly told me to F off... and i kindly let them be, 2 days later 30minutes before shift ends we hear an soul shattering scream followed by call an ambulance, they where cutting a bit of stone and the disc (not a flapdisc but a diamond cutting disc) lodged it self in to a cravis and shattered the disc in multiple pieces, ripping his left index and middle off and leaving his ring finger dangling of his hand just attached by a piece of skin, besides that i heard he a had a piece stuck in his thigh and foot and that he was lucky that his head was not in the flight path....
      so yeahh no matter what disc never ever remove the guard cover! if you can not reach there to cut use a different tool!

      @Gopnik57 that is a crazy story, glad I read it. I once unsuccessfully tried to cut the bars of a steel security door with a grinder, not knowing a thing about the danger or the fact that the disc was bought used and was old. Scary stuff.

    I was cutting rebar in construction and the safety guard was off of the grinder because it gets in the freaking way anyways the disc blew up and I caught it in the shoulder. Always wear eye protection with these things
