Welcome to Home Free! Yes, they are gritty in this song but they can sing all genres and sing them well. Tim Foust, the bass, has a 5 octave range so while he can go really low he can sing tenor as well. Austin, the high tenor can yodel and do harmonica as well. All the boys can do some amount of beatboxing but Adam Rupp is superb. He has a drum solo video where you can hear his amazing beatboxing skills. Chance did the mouth harp and will use a looper for that in concert as he says it hurts his voice to do it too long. Try Helplessly Hoping, How Great Thou Art, Country Roads, Seven Bridges Road to hear their great harmonies. For Christmas time try Christmas in Dixie (with Alabama) Live, Do You Hear What I Hear, O Holy Night. They’re really good. Keep enjoying Home Free!

Love your reactions. Several of them got into the sounds on this one. Rob is responsible for the crackles at the beginning and end, Chance was responsible for the Jaw Harp, and Adam was responsible for everything else. There’s a little bit of percussion layers done in post production here so you could get all the drums and harmonica at the same time. But this is, without a doubt one of my favorites from them.

Okay, see Chance is the one that came up with the Digeridoo noise, and Tim has learned to do the harmonica sound too. They all can do some basic beat box sounds so they don't have to make Adam do it all. In concert they switch it up a bit and even bring in a repeater to carry the digeridoo through the song.
Pentatonix is great at the super tight, super precise arrangements, like a ven diagram where everybody is mostly overlapped. Homefree is better at making the diagram overlap more loosely. That allows each of them to shine more, while still keeping a solid blend. Chance being able to double as a bass doesn't hurt any either

  • @bethcoussou

So glad you reacted to this one!! There was so much going on, but it was so good!! Several of the guys, aside from Adam, are pretty good at sound effects! Chance and Austin have both contributed quite a bit of cool sounds on earlier recordings. I love what Rob did in this one! It’s kind of a scar/rap thing. I love it!! Of course, Tim’s bass, and Adam’s harmonica just blew me away! I’ve watched this so many times because I love seeing reactors facial expressions and hear their comments! Loved your reaction very much!! It’s always great to see people with musical backgrounds who really appreciate what Home Free does.

Filmed in Fairhope, AL where my mama was born almost 100 yrs ago, and you are seeing what is called an Oak Alley --- a road running through a stand of water oaks that arch over and surround the road --- each tree draped with Spanish moss....each tree an ecosystem of it's own --- a rare and precious hat-tip to the old south. A couple of places you may want to check out for more of these amazing oak trees is Mobile, AL and Pensacola, FL. Gorgeous parks in Pensacola, where each block of houses was plotted out around a square of trees and gorgeous azaleas and other flowering plants. 2 highly under-rated cities for their beauty and history.

They all meld so well together in what they are doing, each knowing what their part is and where it comes in, it's seamless and they all have the sounds that they do that helps the song. Chance was doing the deep mouth harp sound or throat singing in this song and it was not Adam Rupp although I have heard many flutelike sounds come out of Adam well as that harmonica that I have seen him do live just a few feet from me in a past concert. I still didn't know how he did it.

This group is simply amazing with EVERY song the sing - they really "own" the covers they do and I know you'll love their original stuff like "Dive Bar Saints" and their recently dropped Christmas original (written by Austin), "Cold Hard Cash for Christmas" - as well as a wonderful rendition of "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "O Holy Night".
They never cease to amaze you with so much talent but with no egos involved - every member has a place where their individual talents shine but their unique strength is their unique blend and it's awesome to see how much F-U-N they have doing what they do!!!.
I look forward to more reactions from you to this group.

Tim's solo is so beautifully haunting, isn't it?! They all do such a great job on this one. They're particularly proud of this one. In the live concert version, Austin joins Adam for a duet on the harmonica in the part before Tim's solo. Harmonica Harmony! It's so good and so cool!! Worth finding it on YT to check it out! As already mentioned, I hope you do, "Do You Hear What I Hear". It was arranged by Adam (our human drum kit) so you can imagine how good it is!! It's a very unique and incredible arrangement, not to mention, absolutely gorgeous! Thx for the reaction! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

They use a looping machine for Chance's underlying jawharp throughout the song and for Adam's beatboxing (only) when he needs to do both, the harmonica and bbx parts together at the same time.

Enjoyed your reaction. A couple of points...at 4:34 there's a subharmonic note that EVERY reactor overlooks and/or doesn't recognize. Not sure why. And at 6:01 you can watch Adam Chance do the mouth harp.
The sound Rob made in between his little "hippity hippity here we go" is scratching a record, like a DJ would do when he's mixing. I really like the way you fade out when you want to comment then fade back in. Very nice.
If I could put in a request, I'd love to see you react to "Folsom Prison Blues", "Can't Stop The Feeling" or "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"...all covers by Home Free except the latter, which is Peter Hollens featuring Home Free. Thanks!

Chance is actually doing the jaw harp sound you mentioned. You can see it very briefly at the end of the video. Did you catch that octave drop from Tim as the others came in after his bass solo? A lot of people miss it.

Adam Chance is doing the Digeridoo sound in the backing track of their live loop... so Adam Rupp can do his harmonica thing threw out the song(plus his solo too) and they can keep the beat box going threw out...

Adam Rupp is not doing the juice harp. Adam Chance is. If you'll notice at the very end of the video he's the one standing against the post wearing the hat and you can tell it's him doing the juice harp. The scratch that Rob Lundquist did. That's a old DJ move called scratching.

Yes Chance does the juice harp or diggity doo and Rupp does the harmonica. If you see the live concert on line Austin joins in the harmonica sound, harmonizing with Rupp. They are amazing!!!

I love A Capella. I first heard it in the mid 90's, a college group called BYU Vocal Point check out their "You Raise Me Up". There is also an all female A Capella group BYU Noteworthy watch "Amazing Grace" it's the best version I've ever heard, in my opinion, including Amira Willighagen's. I saw your reaction to Dimash's "Unforgettable Day". For another unforgettable day you need to hear his "Passione". There's a run in it you won't believe unless you hear it yourself.

I became a Home Fry a few months ago after watching Chris Rupp’s analysis on his channel of “Do You Hear What I Hear”, and the story of how Adam and him arranged it. 😁. It is phenomenal. I will be listening to Home Free Christmas music all year.
