i literally love u! I'm 21 and currently pregnant with my first kid. I am a super picky person and i always like to know every single detail about things. And especially now that i am pregnant i have been trying to educate myself as much as possible and you've been amazing at doing helping me in my journey. your videos have been extremely helpful too!
My placenta came right out shortly after giving birth. I didn’t even have to push. It didn’t hurt and just felt like a weird squish. I delivered in a hospital. The doctor let me see it briefly but I wish I would have had a chance to take a longer look.
We had a home birth in a birth pool. Everything went well and I didn't even damage the perineum other than the (obviously natural) stretching (I was so glad, because it made peeing after birth much more bearable!). However, the seldom case you described happened to me: the placenta stayed and my body also stopped any contractions after our baby was out. The two midwives who were there for us were very attentive and gentle, first trying some massages on my uterus, then asking me to continue breastfeeding and stimulating my nipples with my fingers, to induce more oxytocin. That didn't help, so the next step was to inject oxytocin into my thigh. But still no further contractions. This was the moment when the midwives explained to us what the situation was and that we should go to the hospital to have the placenta manually removed. My feeling also told me that my job was done, which I also shared with my husband and midwives. In the hospital, I had the choice between getting an epidural (which sounded ironic to me, since I had managed the birth process without any pain relief nor epidural, which is also not an option during home birth) or a full anaesthesia. Full anaesthesia was possible, since I hadn't eaten in the past 12 hours, ever since the contractions became intense, so I had nothing but water in my stomach. My husband held our baby the whole time I was gone for the manual removal of the placenta, which gave daddy and baby important bonding time and which maybe otherwise they would not have had. Our baby is equally being soothed by being with mama or daddy. The whole time I was not scared or concerned, probably because I was well cared for by our midwives and also our gynaecologist in the hospital (who had to be called out of her bed at 3am!) and everyone else in the hospital. Also, I knew our baby was healthy and safe with my husband. After about 45min I was back with daddy and baby. We stayed for a couple more hours, to monitor the blood loss. The blood loss continued to be normal (similar to after a natural birth of the placenta), we could go home. I agree that most annoying was to feel the umbilical cord against the then very delicate tissue of my after birth vulva. Also, my legs were exhausted from the "birth marathon", so any additional movement was taking a lot of effort and concentration from me. Of course, I would have preferred to stay at home in bed 😄 After having shared my birth experience with my mom, she shared with me that when I was born, the placenta also didn't come out by itself and that new contractions needed to be induced with a shot of oxytocin. That was quite interesting to me, that there might be a pattern in our family. So, I think that talking to your mom about her birth experiences can give us clues to what might happen during our own birth experience. Nevertheless, even though the placenta needed to be removed manually, we had an empowering birth experience and since we are embedded in a super system of health care providers (we live in Belgium), I was calm and was sure that there was never a major threat to my health or baby's health. Also, I want to mention that having watched your videos during pregnancy made me remember during the most difficult part of labor, that I indeed was born to birth, and that gave me strength to continue with the last couple of pushes until our baby was finally born. So, thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge so generously! ❤️
You still took an unnecessary risk by giving birth at home because if you would have had a placental abruption or a retained placenta that would have needed a D&C or even a uterine rupture you maybe not alive today to tell your story.
Watching your videos have really given me a piece of mind during my pregnancy. I have eight more days left until my due date. I'm going to go through and rewatch everything again that way I feel extra prepared.
Gave birth a week ago today! Your videos were such a big part of me preparing for my delivery which was amazing! And now this one was some great timing!! Thank you 💛
Thank you for your videos Bridget, I’m due in 6 days and have been watching pretty much all of your videos! I am hoping for a smooth delivery. This is my first baby 💕
My placenta was a stubborn one. After 30 minutes the midwife and doctor called the senior “birth doctor” and told me “she will be much more forceful” with manipulating my stomach from the outside to detach the placenta. She was, and it hurt quite a bit but worked - but I would much rather have that than go to have it surgically removed 💪🏻😊
I had a successful VBAC birth on 7/30! I had a epidural at 7cm and progressed to 10cm within 45 minutes and pushed for about 5 minutes (2 contractions worth) and baby was earthside. Less than 5 minutes after the initial cuddles with baby, my midwife told me to give a little push as my placenta was ready to come out. I hardly pushed and the whole thing just kinda flopped out. It was so easy! But like I said, I had an epidural and couldn’t really feel anything so that definitely affected my experience. The pains are real though! Like period cramps but a little worse. Mine were the worst while in the hospital but about 2-3 days later I was just experiencing mild cramping. I’d do it a million times over, it was all so worth it for my baby girl❤️
I had the same experience. Successful VBAC, epidural at 7cm dilated, and with in an hour ready to push. Took 45 minutes to push and had only first degree tear which was een small area.
Watching this after I just had a homebirth with my second child and yes these postpartum contractions this time around feel like I’m still in labor... Definitely glad I found this video because I was a little worried. Thank you so much!
You’re amazing ! Delivered baby boy 🐣 today at 40+1 weeks and I just want to say thank You for what you do ! You’ve helped me a lot through this journey and continue to do so ❤
I’m due December 4th & I’ve been watching your videos since I found out I’m pregnant! I am SO thankful for your videos- you’re the most informative, succinct, and lovely childbirth educator I’ve ever come across!
I just gave birth to my 2nd 3 weeks ago and had a retained placenta. They had to manually remove it and then I hemorrhaged for about an hour after. Definitely a very scary situation and it took about a week for my body to recover from the blood loss specifically. But, so thankful that baby and I are okay. I've been loving your videos and they definitely helped when it came to my labor. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Wow, I'm sorry this happened to you. I also had an issue with my placenta during my first birth and hemorrhaged, needing the doctor to manually go in with their hand to find anything that may be left. It was traumatizing for sure, didnt want to talk about it for months afterwards. The birth of my BABY was beautiful though and we are both healthy. Glad you both are as well.
I was raised by my Ultra Conservative Grandmother, and Sex was rarely discussed in a positive way ! When I was a kid, I asked if giving birth hurts. She snapped at me and said ' Of Course but hurts !!! " So I've never really understood how Women can summon the mental fortitude to birth a child ( and have more kids ! ) But seeing videos such as yours are helping me understand how Woman's Bodies are built to do that, and somehow it all works out. Thank you very much !
Bridget thank you so much for these videos! I was able to have an unassisted home birth with the help of your videos! I used the breathing techniques as well as the stages so I could know what stage I was in! Now watching postpartum after having my first vaginal birth yesterday!
Can I ask why you chose to have an unassisted home birth? I’m the type to naturally lean that direction as well, then with the addition of a horrific traumatic first birth too. So why did you chose that? Did you have any family there or anyone? ♥️🙏🏽
Thank you for the information,I was really worried why I was experiencing the contractions when I start to breast feed.my baby is a day old and it's my 3rd pregnancy, you took all my worries away.thanks a lot🥰
I knew absolutely nothing about the afterbirth process the first time around. My OB never once mentioned anything about birthing the placenta and when it came to actually doing it, he didn’t say anything either. Just pulled it out while I was laying there in shock and wondering what was happening. Compared to my second birth with my midwife, we talked about it in details well beforehand and during. Such different experiences!!!
Just had a VBAC a week ago, had an epidural so I dont know if it affects how delivery of placenta feels. But I hardly felt it pass. I gave a push like I was pooping and my husband said the midwife just gave the umbilical cord a tug and it came right out... great video, you hardly EVER hear about the delivery of the placenta!
I wish I’d seen this video before having my son this April! 😅 I was honestly a bit shocked by the intensity of the after birth pains. It was to the point that I would feel sick and not even be able to enjoy nursing my little one. 😭 DEFINITELY going to try the oil blend and tincture next time!! As far as birthing the placenta, mine did take a while to detach, so they gave me some kind of herbal tincture to put under my tongue...it came out shortly after that. I did have some tearing up towards the front/just inside , so the process of birthing the placenta was pretty painful for me, but it didn’t take a very long time, and was so worth it to be able to climb in bed and love on my sweet baby and my husband after 15 1/2 hours of labor!! ☺️❤️
Congrats on ur new pregnancy!! I was so anxious when u took that test! Also love love how u taught me to breathe with my tummy/diaphragm instead of my chest. I've had 3 kids and didnt know that. I feel so much more prepared.
@@eyebloom__ the #1 tip for an easier labor/birth video. She explained how breathing with ur tummy/diaphragm gives baby more oxygen and helps contractions do their job. As compared to breathing with your chest. Lie down Put ur hands on r tummy and fill it up then release. You get sooooo much more air!!!
@@eyebloom__ she also explains how not fighting the surges(contractions) and leaning into them with breathing will help open ur cervix. My first labor i would hold my breathe the whole contraction or cry ir cuss...lol i was young and dumb. This will be my 4th live birth. My last 2 were still born
@@MissHawes0187 ok thanks so much this is my third baby and I definitely needed some breathing Techniques...so sorry to hear about that but congratulations on your 4th live birth!!
@@eyebloom__ thank you so much!! Im super happy i found her channel. Her tips for focusing on ur breath and allowing the surges your open your cervix are spot on. Screaming yelling and crying does not help and actually stalls labor. And boy have i been going about this all wrong.. This time im going to be calm, cool, and collected so my baby can enter this world in a peaceful state. No cussing or yelling or holding my breath. Idk why i hold my breath alllllll the time.
I just had my first baby the 24th and the after pain contractions are unbearable much worse than labor. I didn’t know it gets worse the more kids u have...GREAT
Yesss I wish I knew this with my second, those pains caught me so off guard, now pregnant with #3 and I’m more scared of after pains than anything especially each time you latch baby 😫
It took me 2.5 hours to deliver the placenta. Baby was 3 weeks early so I feel the placenta was like “Wait my job isn’t done here”. It was pretty painful, harder to withstand than the birth. Probably bc I was so wore out and just desperate to hold my baby. Contractions started about 30 minutes after delivery and I cut the cord when the contractions felt almost unbearable. By then the cord was white so it was good to cut. I will note that I grazed with the baby, but I actually tore level 1/2 delivering the placenta. The whole experience was more painful and arduous than birthing my beautiful little boy!
Had my second child a week ago 😊 and the postpartum contractions were SERIOUS! I was not prepared!!! Also after an epidural, I couldn't feel my bladder anymore. Neither of those happened after my first baby.
29 weeks, with 11 weeks to go! And I will be able to attempt a vaginal birth after two c-sections! Really looking forward to hopefully being able to do this :)
I had my third a week ago. Delivering the placenta was such an afterthought while holding my new baby. I gave one little push and it was out. The after pains for the third were no joke though! When they massaged my uterus it was pretty painful and some of the contractions while breastfeeding were strong enough for me to need to breath through. They definitely got a little worse each delivery. Heating pads helped a ton!
I had a retained placenta with my first born and was rushed for surgery due to loosing alot of blood. I have my second birth in two months and am praying for a smooth birth of placenta this time 🤞
My first birth my placenta came out in 2 pieces. the doctor had to reach in and scoop out the second part. My second birth happened very quickly without my OB in the room and the hospitalist showed up and immediately started pushing hard on my belly and pulling and pushing the placenta out. It was extremely painful and I didn't understand why it was happening.
Oh mamas I am 1 week overdue, please send me some energies so I can finally can meet with my babyboy 🥰 this waiting is just soooooo long! I tried everything to induce labour but nothing helps 😭
Did you know you're not overdue until 42 weeks? As long as your baby is still moving, he or she is right where they need to be - he or she will tell your body when is the right time to be born! ❤
My after birth pains with my first were uncomfortable 😢 i hated it. Thats what i dread most with my second on the way . I wasnt prepared for the pain. Now I'm going to have everything i can to help lol.
I don't even remember actually delivering the placenta at all! I was so focused on my little one and my nurses were so amazing to just take care of everything while I got to snuggle. However, i do remember asking if it was all there because two weeks prior to my little one being born, there was a woman who lost her arms and legs to a flesh eating disease caused by a piece of her placenta being left inside at the very hospital I gave birth at. 😳 I made them show me it to be sure it was all out (even though obviously they know a whole lot better than I do just by looking at it hahah)
For me delivering the placenta was very easy, I didn't even have to push. What was horrible was when the midwife started massaging my belly and when they gave me stitches. I managed birth really well without an epidural but during the stitches I couldn't stop crying. I was exhausted and so tired of being strong that I fell apart. I'd do it again though. :D The prize is way too big!
I had my baby June 18th , I pushed him out at 6:03am , I was put on pitocin when I got there because of high blood pressure and I was one 1cm so I had to get epidural. My pain got so bad at the end when it was time to push I didn’t even feel the epidural and that was after getting two extra shots of drugs for the pain. I pushed him out at a 10 for pain so when the placenta was coming out I didn’t feel anything ! Only thing that was kinda annoying was the pushing down of my stomach they did to help it come out faster. Tbh the doctor could of had his hand in there taking it out and I wouldn’t have noticed lol I was so in love when my son came out. They did ask me to do a small push and I saw it come out it was very interesting to see lol.
For me birthing the placenta was super easy... shortly after my baby was born my midwife told me to give a little push and it slid right out! The one thing I wasn’t prepared for was how painful and frequent the nurses pressing my belly afterwards would be... holy cow that was rough
Karynne Baker it’s called fundal massage; It’s done to reduce bleeding and postpartum hemorrhage. It helps to get rid of any blood or clots still inside your body that need to come out and unfortunately it’s not comfortable. The word “massage” is quite misleading when it comes to this 😫😅
Mary Rudisill oh! Wow! I didn’t know this. I’m due with my first beginning of Oct and all of the after birth stuff and postpartum stuff honestly scares me more than the birth itself lol
Karynne Baker I’m due with my first in November! Congratulations! Don’t worry too much about the fundal massage, the nurse will most likely just come in and say something like “ok I’m going to press on your tummy now” and then it will be over 🙌🏽
One hour after my very smooth home birth, I had a retained placenta and though bleeding to death wasn’t a primary concern, I had to rush to the hospital for a D&C surgery to remove it.
I got an epidural with both my labors and I didn’t even have to push the placenta out, the doctor just took care of everything! And I wanted to say, my afterpains were bad but manageable after my first baby, but after my second baby they were UNBEARABLE!! I have very painful period cramps though so that may be it, but I wish I was more prepared the second time around!
I didn’t have pain birthing my placenta. Nor did I get the desire to push until I made myself push and it started coming out, it was more of a “breathless” feeling…
I started following you 4 years ago and I’m back because I still have questions about afterbirth issues. After delivering my placenta, they told me they had to massage me inside aggressively. I noticed a few days later that my belly button was bruised. I asked my OB and he said that my record said I wasn’t clotting so they had to do that. What is that condition called? My belly still looks like I’m pregnant and I wonder if it’s related.
Please I want to know what happened after a c-section of about one month and a retained product is discovered in the uterus after I complain of a serious none smelling discharge and some time blood discharge please help me cos am going crazy
I am due sept 11th and there are barely any doula’s in my area. The one I almost hired was barely responding to my texts/emails. Made me feel like I wasn’t a priority. Now i am back to having my husband as my only support partner. So my question to youuu is, is your online class more for me or my husband will get a good understanding as well? Anyone else out there that has bought her course have an opinion? thanks! i just want my husband to be as prepared as i am becoming. :) :)
Hi Amanda! The built to birth course prepares the birth partner SO well to be prepared in labor. I even talk about what to do if a doula isn’t an option! You and your partner will learn movements and positions for each stage of labor and even what you can do if labor isn’t progressing and becomes very challenging to avoid a c-section. You will both learn how to make informed decisions as well! I totally recommend working through it with your husband! It’ll be so helpful for him!
I delivered yesterday and had this issue. it was painful when the doctor inserted her hands. Today night I had back pain frequently like contractions and when I went to bathroom got a big piece of blood clot.is there any relation between placenta and this.after that all my pain has gone.anything to worry?
I just had my baby March 9th still here in the hospital and my placenta was retained. I had a midwife and they had to find a doctor to get the placenta. Very scary moment a lot of digging and pressure and I’m still having pains now when I’m not on meds. 4th pregnancy and it was very different
My placenta fell right out about 2 minutes after my daughter came out. I didn't even feel it. However, a piece of the sack was still stuck inside and my ob had to shove her hand inside to try to get it out. That was an extremely painful experience to the point where I couldn't even enjoy having my newborn on my chest because of it.
Raquil Morgan I was on epidural but by the time I needed to push, the medication started wearing off. I felt everything once I started pushing her out. However, all the contractions I had before then, I felt nothing.
I am wondering if what happened to me was normal. I had natural birth with a midwife. After I had my daughter she basically fixed me and removed the placenta herself within minutes of giving birth. I ended up hemorrhaging and my monitors were going off. I felt cold sweats and dizzy. She put a shot in my leg that stopped the bleeding. All this was very traumatic.
So my baby came too early but I did your breathing tips and I gave birth 6 hours after water broke cause my water broke before contractions came but I was progressing really quickly I think because I used your breathing techniques labor came so quickly.
My sis gave birth to a baby a week ago..today she released a piece of placenta while doing pee ...a peach size....does it a serious problem as placenta stays in body a week and might have chances of more pieces ????
I deliver my placenta but each time a piece is left behind and i end up back at e.r. 3 days later getting a dnc and 2 or more blood transfusions. Ive almost died 2 times now😞 delivering again in 6 weeks. Scared
Not normal, hope you got that checked out. I did start bleeding heavier and lasted about 8 weeks - didn’t do fundal massage at home though , and was lifting laundry. Big no ‘ no’s
My placenta came out with my baby. It all came out at once, it shocked my nurses and doctor. It was amazing haha!
Raymee Linster that’s a beautiful thing!
lucky!!

Congrats on ur new pregnancy!! I was so anxious when u took that test! Also love love how u taught me to breathe with my tummy/diaphragm instead of my chest. I've had 3 kids and didnt know that. I feel so much more prepared.
Which video is that info from?
@@eyebloom__ the #1 tip for an easier labor/birth video. She explained how breathing with ur tummy/diaphragm gives baby more oxygen and helps contractions do their job. As compared to breathing with your chest. Lie down
Put ur hands on r tummy and fill it up then release.
Girl yes I thought since I felt good The first day after delivering baby that I was going to feel good the rest of the days lol.
Omg SAME. I was not prepared for the postpartum pains
@@CornyAdventures me either girly. Im getting random pains on my inner thighs now.
Thanks for sharing @kimberly
That helps me to prepare what to expect from my body when having our the next children 😄👍
I had a retained placenta with my first born and was rushed for surgery due to loosing alot of blood.
I have my second birth in two months and am praying for a smooth birth of placenta this time 🤞
I’m due in a month and also had retained placenta with my first. Did it happen again or did everything go smoothly?
I would love to know how your second birth went, this also happened to me & has put me off having a second ❤
Did your rest of placenter etc come out itself I am day 4/5 on baby just been toilet and had to pull and snap some meaty hanging thing out of me yuk
Hang in there! Your baby will come when he is ready. Our baby wanted to be born 10 days after due date. That's not overdue. It's right on time 🥰🤞
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 10 days overdue. I hope we both can have the birth we want!
Did you know you're not overdue until 42 weeks? As long as your baby is still moving, he or she is right where they need to be - he or she will tell your body when is the right time to be born! ❤
I was 5 days late when contractions started on there own !! Believe it will happen, and stop thinking about it. I tired everything too lol
All the best. I am due in a week and I guess i am going to go in the same path.. hope you have a safe delivery..
Yep this is a thing. It happens with miscariages too.
Why did they need to press on your tummy?
What about fraternal twins? Do two placentas come out together? How does it work?
does not cutting the chord prevent retaining the placenta?
Bridget Teyler thank you so much! then i will def purchase ♥️
My OB had to manually pull out my placenta and it felt like so much pressure, she put me on antibiotics just in case.
I delivered yesterday and had this issue. it was painful when the doctor inserted her hands. Today night I had back pain frequently like contractions and when I went to bathroom got a big piece of blood clot.is there any relation between placenta and this.after that all my pain has gone.anything to worry?
Where did you get your top?? So cute
Were you on epidural?
Raquil Morgan I was on epidural but by the time I needed to push, the medication started wearing off. I felt everything once I started pushing her out. However, all the contractions I had before then, I felt nothing.
@@cyndi_lee I hemorrhaged and my OB had to do the same and it was so painful worse than contractions
She was shoving her hand to save your life from fatal hemorrhaging.
Birthing the placenta was very difficult for me.
All this was very traumatic.
i recently had manual delivery of placenta , very sore stitches 😅
I'm 10 days pp and the pains are so bad I can barely move is this normal ? 😔 Third baby
I had a retained placenta and my OB had to take it out with her hands. It was a lot of pressure while she was trying to take it out.
I've had a placenta that didnt want to come out but doctor gave me a shot and in about 30 mins it came out
Do you encourage eating your placenta ?
Is it possible to feel afterpains 4 weeks after?
Yes, you were exerting yourself too much. Take it easier next time.
All of my placental came out normally...I agree with yoy on the cord and feeling uncomfortable on the lady parts lol
So my baby came too early but I did your breathing tips and I gave birth 6 hours after water broke cause my water broke before contractions came but I was progressing really quickly I think because I used your breathing techniques labor came so quickly.
well done with the breathing! I bet you did a fab job! Congratulations on the birth of your baby, love, Anja xxx
My sis gave birth to a baby a week ago..today she released a piece of placenta while doing pee ...a peach size....does it a serious problem as placenta stays in body a week and might have chances of more pieces ????
I just had some hangy mestybstringing thing hanging out I’ve pulled most it out don’t no if test will
Your placenta can take hours to come out and that’s ok . Don’t fear mommas
Everyone's giving birth soon but here I am trying to find out if placenta is around the baby or not for a character I'm writing lol
Lol, my placenta shot out really fast and I soaked my poor midwife😂😬🤦🏻♀️
🌹
I deliver my placenta but each time a piece is left behind and i end up back at e.r. 3 days later getting a dnc and 2 or more blood transfusions. Ive almost died 2 times now😞 delivering again in 6 weeks. Scared
Wishing you the best for your delivery and hoping that all after birth comes out in one piece so you don’t have to go through that!❤️
Keeping you in my prayers Alana
@@_poppypowell_ thanks...im due the 24th and im soooooo nervous...espesially about catching covid during mine and babies stay😞😞
I pray that everything turns out good for your third birth
@@MissHawes0187 did everything go well for you? ❤️
Has anyone experienced bleeding months after birth?
Not normal, hope you got that checked out. I did start bleeding heavier and lasted about 8 weeks - didn’t do fundal massage at home though , and was lifting laundry. Big no ‘ no’s
The fact that doctors can refuse to give you your placenta if you want to take it home is infuriating 😤
A cold wet noodle 😆
I gave a like for the video... was cringing the whole time. EXTREMELY VITAL INFO. sad about the essential oil sales pitch.
Hope u women married first
Bet it stinky
