I'm sooo glad I'm not the only one who has to know basically every bit of dialogue and information about the book BEFORE the writing process even begins! I tell people I basically write the book twice because of this. It helps me sooo much when I do get to the writing part! :)
I used to be a pantser, but I've fallen in love with plotting now haha. I'm working on my outline now, actually! I use the snowflake method and so far it's been really helpful, but the 3-act structure is very intriguing to me and I think I might try it out! Random side note: Where did you get your laptop cover? I need a new one hahah.
Same here Alexis!! I used to be a pantser too, but I could never write well until I started hardcore plotting. Oooh I've heard of the snowflake method! and I definitely recommend the 3-act story structure - it feels a lot more intuitive to me than a lot of other story structures I've seen. I got my laptop cover from Amazon! (where I get everything else lol)
DUDE! The editing on that montage-sequence-thing at the beginning of the video is SO GOOD! I've never actually done NaNo, and I don't plan to, as the last time I forced myself to finish a first draft on a deadline I was burnt out for months afterward :/ (I'm strictly a slow first-drafter lol) but I'm hoping to try to do at least a little bit of work on my current project every day during the next few months, even if I don't stick strictly to the NaNo schedule, per say. I think that's a bit more my speed. :) Best of luck on your NaNo project, and awesome video, as always! :D

I didn't plan to participate this year but changed my mind a few days ago when I started writing an our line for chapters of my book during a phone conversation. Thankfully the idea for this story has been in my brain for a while so hopefully I won't struggle too much with preparation. I’m so glad I found your channel because I feel it is going to help me so much. Now that I’m actually attempting to try and write a finished book that I can feel good about. I’ve had a couple thousand word half stories or scene snippets I write on the spot then do nothing with since it’s lost it’s momentum. But with a fresh idea in mind I’m now getting on top of it and really trying to figure out both my story and my characters. I love your videos and your humor and your personality- I wish you had more subscribers so more people would know about your amazing content.
I love your personality, and that montage was great! I'm a crazy planner as well. I don't write 15,000 word outlines, but I make sure I understand what happens before NaNoWriMo. I've never used scene cards before, that's an interesting idea. This year I'm rewriting a novel, but I changed much of the plot and changed the antagonist. Usually I don't do a lot of prep in October, but I've been busy this year trying to understand my characters better. Now I have their goals and motives nailed down, which should make writing this novel much easier than the first time around.

This is perfect, actually. It's just what I've been needing. I used to be so, mentally unorganized as to how to keep every little part in order, but seeing this made it click, along with having seen everything else for the elements, like the characters, inciting incidents, and the plot structure, and so on and so forth. I've never done NaNoWriMo before, and I'm an English major, with an AA in that and Certificate in Creative Writing in progress. Right now I have a novel in progress, but with everything here, I feel more confident with the process. I want to make next month of July my first NaNoWriMo, so I can start getting the hang of it (Call me crazy if you will, I'll accept the compliment). My second novel idea will take place during America's colonial era, where I meet my characters, and founders of my fictional planet. Yep, there's going to be a lot going on for me. Bottom line, thanks a bunch, Abbie. :D
I just found your video. this is the first I've ever seen of you but I am totally subscribing! I'm sooo excited for NaNoWriMo.. I can't wait!!! in October most of what I'm planning to do is get into a habit of going to bed early and waking up early so I can do that in November and finishing my rough outline. I had a rough outline last year for NaNo and it made writing so much easier because I knew what was coming next and what was supposed to happen. I don't need it nearly as hyper organised as you do that idea just tires me out haha.. but yeah some organisation is amazing!

Unbelievable... the amount of prep you do. I must try it sometime as the benefits must be huge but this time I’m going in blind with just a kernel of an idea that has been germinating for god knows how long in that juicy creative part of my brain from which the ‘me’ is barred. Success!

Thank you for the great tips! I love your organization! I only learned about NaNoWriMo last week in my writing workshop, so my prep is nearly nil besides the idea I have and the long summary I've written. I just signed up on their site & I'm looking forward to the challenge! The goal before the end of October is to get the basics outlined so I know to work on each time I sit down, but otherwise, I'll be flying by the seat of my pants!

WOW, you are so organized! I like so many things about your process. I signed up for NaNoWriMo for the first time and will start tomorrow! Set up my space and told my husband and our girls. Now as tomorrow approaches, I'm slightly TERRIFIED! I know I will finish, I just don't know what comes next... I turned 40 this year. I have always been a writer, both by hobby or by career (a technical writer and several articles in local publications). I've not published anything longer than a magazine article. I do not have an agent. This will be my first novel.... And the list of worries goes on. So my plan is that I will take on November and Win! Then I guess I will worry about what comes next in December.

I do it almost the same way, just that I sometimes don't fully finish the long draft before Nov 1st. Funnily enough I do write in 3 acts but I don't use the in-depth version w story points per chapter. I kind of do that automatically as I've recently found out. Renaming the songs for a "soundtrack" sounds really fucking cool!

I just discovered your channel and I really enjoy it. And yes with the soundtrack. An album inspired me to write this book back in much. I relate to you so much!
My noveling process is not nearly as concise and organized, but I feel ya on needing to know everything about my story and my characters before writing. The more planning I have done for NaNo, the easier it is for me to win and finish my novel. I have a huge poster board with my scenes and character notes plastered in a chronological "tree" of plot lines; it's gorgeous. And then I have notes on each scene, complete with dialogue, character introspection and interaction, settings, et cetera, in these big clonky blocks of text. I will research the crap out of everything (for fun, though) so yeah, I have to set big limits on myself too. Unless I know absolutely nothing about something that I'm trying to describe, I try not to research during NaNo. Good luck this month! It's going to be a blast!

I've never done NaNo, but there's something about October that gets me motivated to write. I'm working on another W.I.P and I'm about to start editing Uprising with a goal of publishing in Spring 2019. I'm FINALLY feeling motivated again and I'm so excited. I've been working on aesthetics for my new W.I.P. And a playlist on Spotify because I go crazy with book playlists. 😂😂In my mind, my book will be a movie someday, so I have to have the soundtrack. Love this video. Even though there is NO WAY I could do all that planning without frustrating myself, I like watching videos about people who are plotters. I'm a total pantser. I can't work with an outline, but I envy people who can because outlines make things SO MUCH EASIER. I just can't do it. XD XD I've tried so many times and no luck. But that's totally okay. We all have different processes. Sidenote: I LOVE October, so I'm so excited for Fall to be coming! :D

This is perfect, actually. It's just what I've been needing. I used to be so, mentally unorganized as to how to keep every little part in order, but seeing this made it click, along with having seen everything else for the elements, like the characters, inciting incidents, and the plot structure, and so on and so forth.
I've never done NaNoWriMo before, and I'm an English major, with an AA in that and Certificate in Creative Writing in progress. Right now I have a novel in progress, but with everything here, I feel more confident with the process. I want to make next month of July my first NaNoWriMo, so I can start getting the hang of it (Call me crazy if you will, I'll accept the compliment).
My second novel idea will take place during America's colonial era, where I meet my characters, and founders of my fictional planet.

I just found your video. this is the first I've ever seen of you but I am totally subscribing! I'm sooo excited for NaNoWriMo.. I can't wait!!! in October most of what I'm planning to do is get into a habit of going to bed early and waking up early so I can do that in November and finishing my rough outline. I had a rough outline last year for NaNo and it made writing so much easier because I knew what was coming next and what was supposed to happen. I don't need it nearly as hyper organised as you do that idea just tires me out haha.. but yeah some organisation is amazing!

Unbelievable... the amount of prep you do. I must try it sometime as the benefits must be huge but this time I’m going in blind with just a kernel of an idea that has been germinating for god knows how long in that juicy creative part of my brain from which the ‘me’ is barred. Success!
Haha, yes, I get pretty carried away with all my outlining… 😂 But hey, sometimes it's great to fly blind and watch the story develop as you write it! Best of luck with NaNo!

Thank you for the great tips! I love your organization! I only learned about NaNoWriMo last week in my writing workshop, so my prep is nearly nil besides the idea I have and the long summary I've written. I just signed up on their site & I'm looking forward to the challenge! The goal before the end of October is to get the basics outlined so I know to work on each time I sit down, but otherwise, I'll be flying by the seat of my pants!

WOW, you are so organized! I like so many things about your process. I signed up for NaNoWriMo for the first time and will start tomorrow! Set up my space and told my husband and our girls. Now as tomorrow approaches, I'm slightly TERRIFIED! I know I will finish, I just don't know what comes next... I turned 40 this year. I have always been a writer, both by hobby or by career (a technical writer and several articles in local publications). I've not published anything longer than a magazine article. I do not have an agent. This will be my first novel.... And the list of worries goes on. So my plan is that I will take on November and Win! Then I guess I will worry about what comes next in December.

I do it almost the same way, just that I sometimes don't fully finish the long draft before Nov 1st. Funnily enough I do write in 3 acts but I don't use the in-depth version w story points per chapter. I kind of do that automatically as I've recently found out.

My noveling process is not nearly as concise and organized, but I feel ya on needing to know everything about my story and my characters before writing. The more planning I have done for NaNo, the easier it is for me to win and finish my novel. I have a huge poster board with my scenes and character notes plastered in a chronological "tree" of plot lines; it's gorgeous. And then I have notes on each scene, complete with dialogue, character introspection and interaction, settings, et cetera, in these big clonky blocks of text. I will research the crap out of everything (for fun, though) so yeah, I have to set big limits on myself too. Unless I know absolutely nothing about something that I'm trying to describe, I try not to research during NaNo.

I've never done NaNo, but there's something about October that gets me motivated to write. I'm working on another W.I.P and I'm about to start editing Uprising with a goal of publishing in Spring 2019. I'm FINALLY feeling motivated again and I'm so excited. I've been working on aesthetics for my new W.I.P. And a playlist on Spotify because I go crazy with book playlists. 😂😂In my mind, my book will be a movie someday, so I have to have the soundtrack.
Love this video. Even though there is NO WAY I could do all that planning without frustrating myself, I like watching videos about people who are plotters. I'm a total pantser. I can't work with an outline, but I envy people who can because outlines make things SO MUCH EASIER. I just can't do it. XD XD I've tried so many times and no luck.
But that's totally okay. We all have different processes.
