    I'm currently 35411 words in already. I was like, "I'm FLYING through this manuscript! This is too good to be true." And of course, that's when I hit a roadblock. Turns out there's a knot in my plotline which I have to untangle before I can move on... Luckily I'm so far ahead I can afford a couple days of outlining. To get here though, I can say I've used all of these tips, so they are definitely a big help! Good luck everyone! (ps. I love the customized notebook!)

    These tips are solid gold. I find writing the fast draft keeps my voice & style consistant throughout the manuscript. I plan to knock out 120,000 words for my next project & that begins today. I'll be using all these tips - apart from the notebook. That's not my style 😁
    Thanks for a great video!

    I'm so happy I found this video of yours! I got the habit of highlighting what I need to fix later on as most of my writing was scholarly papers / nonfiction and we have a significant amount of parenthesis! I love the idea of fast drafting and had been considering it. I wrote half of a novel's first draft in a few weeks in 2019 right before moving, then I worked on my dissertation; but my goal for this summer is to finish this first draft. So far my outline apparently works and I added some notes in it since then; but I just need to get back in it and just write so I can move forward!

    That's so funny!! I use a notebook to sort my stuff out before I write, too. It's especially helpful when I get stuck, or if I need to sort out timelines or background information that I need to know, but won't necessarily come up in the story. I use my notebook for almost every writing session and it has saved me HOURS of writing and prevented so much anxiety and stress.

    I have been watching a half dozen of your You Tube videos and lots of great advice. I have used your method of "Brain dump" getting my ideas on paper very quickly as I have them to build a chapter, which is sorta like your Fast Draft method in this video. My first copy is fast hand written chapters and my next draft is reworking it as I enter the text in word. As my book is a "How To" book on how to capture exciting pro photography (from 20 years doing it), the second draft I try to keep conversational style so it is entertaining (with some anecdotal stories) while also educational. Scott Kelby did this in his books adding humor. Your tips have helped a lot as 3/4 of book done. Thanks!

    9 days in and I just hit 20k... I'm ahead of the "official" Nano schedule and also ahead of my own personal schedule... but my friend is finishing her 50k *today*.
    I'm struggling not to compare my progress to hers, to just be impressed and proud of her and not jealous... lol
    The struggle is real, tho.
    Love the tips, I'll be doing sprints on and off all day tomorrow, I hope to get a metric ton of words in! ❤

    • @BethanyAtazadeh
      @BethanyAtazadeh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh my goodness, that's so impressive!! Definitely celebrate yourself! I understand, there will always be someone who's ahead of us / doing what we want to do. That doesn't change no matter how far we get, there's always further we could go, but definitely would encourage you not to compare! Comparison is the thief of joy and you deserve to celebrate how far you've come! :)

  • @GabrielleBGoode
    @GabrielleBGoode 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do that sometimes (highlight words), but the funny thing is that I often don't choose another word instead of the one I highlighted because that word was just fine and I was just getting writer-y doubts
    The "write at the same time" is a new experiment for me. It works better than expected, but 9 days into the experiment, I already took 2 days off. I was back on track today. Must try harder.
    Yes, deadlines work for me, too. I'm trying to put in place a system where people will expect my stories (I call them stories, though they range from 15k to 85k) or at least chapters. So far, I used pre-order deadlines as motivators, but I got a bit burned out and stopped putting up preorders. Will start again soon.

    • @BethanyAtazadeh
      @BethanyAtazadeh  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! And taking days off is totally different than taking months or years off, I think days off are very important to avoid burn out! :)

    I write very quickly and have the opposite problem where I never edit or dont ever want to. But I also put too much pressure on myself to write perfectly the first time. Now I think I've written so much so fast for so long that I've burned myself out because I can't seem to write over 50 too much these days 😖😭
    (Also the parenthesis tip is a good one. I usually never thought to just write something as filler and move on so that's super helpful)

    • @BethanyAtazadeh
      @BethanyAtazadeh  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! Everyone is different, so you know your story best, but if it's okay, I'd like to encourage you to try moving forward in the future and trust that you can rewrite the chapter later. Knowing the full story all the way through the end will almost always inform what you want chapter one to be about, so it will have a surprisingly huge impact on chapter one if you write the rest of the book! :)
