@@karnivorouskate2364 I want to make a video that goes more in-depth about this, but for now the only way I know how to describe it is my short outline is everything that happens in the book start to finish in as few words as possible (usually 3,000-5,000 words for me) and my long outline is everything that happens in much more detail, leaving nothing out (usually around 17,000 words.) But this will obviously be different for every writer, I just love writing really long and detailed outlines 😂
Abbie, Hi, I was looking at scrivener and your video made me go out and buy it the next day. but now the reality of learning it. I dont suppose I could get a blank template of how you have yours set up? ive seen a few others and I liked yours the best. so far I have used word, several different docs for the same story. I am looking forwards to using scrivener. thank you
ayyyy a fellow fanfiction writer! honestly writing fanfiction helped me be the author i am today. it gave me an avenue to fail until i became a good writer, and writing for an audience with immediate feedback helped so much
I just got Scrivener, and I'm kicking myself for not getting it years ago, but I'm not loving learning how to use it- until now. Your presentation is clear and succinct, and I've learned more about Scrivener in the last 16 minutes than I did all day yesterday. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I'm more of a pantser than a planner, but I reach a certain point in the work where I can't easily keep track of what I've done, and your way of organizing things will be, I think, just as useful if done during the writing process as before it, for me. (Although, I'll never reach the level of detail in many of these categories that you seem to.)
Do you know what? I’m SO glad you’ve written fanfiction. Because I feel like it’s looked down on slightly, and I find it a bit embarrassing to admit that I have written it, which is absolutely ridiculous. It’s still your story, so you shouldn’t be embarrassed, so I don’t get why I am😂 I really admire you and your channel, the videos are helping me so much with the story I’m working on at the moment! :)
Found your channel yesterday, and I have to say that I absolutely love your videos!!! I've probably watched about 20 since finding you last night, and I can't wait to keep watching! Thanks for bringing such helpful information into the authortube sphere!
I adore the organized way you think as well as present. I have learned many useful, nay, profound methods for organizing within Scrivener. Not only a thumbs up, but a new subscriber. Thanks!
I've completed two novel manuscripts now and have pieced together my organization in a variety of tools, but this video has inspired me to give Scrivener another go. You have taken the collection and organization of this software to a completely different level for me. Not only in the information you track and how you do it, but also in the minimalist and non-cluttered way that allows you to have everything at your fingertips while also making it look beautiful in the process. I feel like I've found a new home to hone my craft and expand my love for storytelling. Your subscribe counter just went up by at least one more ;-)
The organization is amazing! For me, the more organized something is makes everything so much less stressful! Watching you cleanly organize all your ideas in such a meaningful way is even better than those satisfying videos of people organizing the wires behind their desk! 😂
YOOOO, fellow fanfic writer! Hell, yeah! You go, Abbie! I've written probably around 3-400k of fanfics throughout my writing career, haha, and I'm not stopping any time soon, even while I work on my OG novel (need SMTH to write when the writer's block hits, yk? lol)! I LITERALLY would not be the writer I am today without fanfic, hands down! I owe it SO MUCH for letting my practice and get better over time with patience and kindness and without pressure or scorn while I grow from a crappy baby writer to a (hopefully) full-fledged novelist armed with the tools for success! WOO! Some of these were really great! Thanks a lot!
Just finished a book WITHOUT Scrivenor. The organization part was hell. I'm in the process of transferring another half-written novel into Scrivener. Loved the details of organization you describe and will check out your other videos. Thank You.
Holy moily! Now that`s how you organize yourself. Thanks a lot for that insight, might have to build a template myself, this is amazing. I didn`t know Scrivener had that Research-Thing and you can really have what you need at your fingertips.
So, I was procrastinating getting into Scrivener, dreading the nitpicky setup. Then one evening I started hammering away, and voila, I had all the pieces loaded and a template created! Awesome video!
Definitely appreciating the goodness here. Possibly the best and most thorough real-working example of using Scrivener effectively that takes advantage of its fantastic organizational potential. Thanks so much for sharing your process!
This is an exceptionally well done video. I appreciate that you tied each part of your use of Scrivener to one of your other video topics, which I have been digesting slowly. I use Scrivener but nowhere near as well as I could.
Thank you so much! I just bought Scrivener today and you were the first person I turned to for how to set it up. Your video helped so much and I’ve filled it in with what I need to get started :)
Hey Abbie, I'm usually a panzer, I have been working on my novel for a couple years now and I kept getting stuck. I decided to use your method of outlining in Scrivener. So far, the results are promising. Thank you for this video! Please keep posting videos on your writing process, they're inspirational! Later my friend!
Just started with Scrivener. If I had seen this years ago I probably would have bought a mac just to use for writing, but it was great to learn they had a Windows version. I was amazed at how well structured the program is! I love your structure and will use many of your ideas as I continue to master the program. Great video! Thanks for sharing and look forward to watching your other videos, but now back to learning Scrivener!
Hey Just discovered your channel today, thanks for helping us newbies to Scrivener. I know organization is the bane of my existence so having this work is going to help for Nanowrimo and other projects. Can't wait to make these ideas of mine a possible side gig but if nothing else I just want to finish a book I've been stuck for years on and now I'm actually going to complete the thing. Thanks Abbie! Wealth of knowledge on your channel.
Abbie, Hi there! I came to your video by way of looking for tutorials for my newly purchased Scrivener app for iPad Pro and though you video is not specific to iPad, I loved it! Your dynamic personality is really fun and inspiring, and I love your method for setting up your novels. I’ll be watching more of your videos on writing and seeing what I can use. So far, I have written two novels-one of which is in the final edits before publishing, and the other is still in first draft-may never see the light of day-stage. I’ve also just started a third, and two pages in, decided I needed Scrivener! Up till now, I’ve been using Microsoft Word and Notability, but I really feel that’s not as efficient as I would like, and I’m not super keen on having my work spread out across multiple platforms, and that’s why I decided to bite the bullet and buy Scrivener. As for method, so far, I’m basically a pantster who does minimal outlining and research on-the-go, but I would like to get more organized, and I think your videos may be a good source of organization information. Keep up the great work, and thanks much for sharing your knowledge and process 😁
Hey Abbie, I'm a new writer and I found this video so helpful! Gotta say, I physically recoiled when I saw your scene card template lmao. Brought back PTSD from 6th grade writing I guess. But after my 'Nam flashback, I came around to the idea, and now I'm going to use it with every scene! Thanks so much for your videos, they're a huge inspiration
Very good! Particularly that scene card stuff. I can see and understand the intellectual process. I'm not in Scrivener, but I'm going to improve my own slide show generating scripts for electronics and programming courses.
Hello Abbie. I bought Scrivener today on your recommendation (yay and thank you). Am looking forward to this minimalist structure to hold all my expansive creativity!
I have a lot of stories in my mind but do not know how to write it. I just want to say that you are awesome and very interesting to watch. Not only because of your positive energy but inspires me to write all the stories. Please continue to inspire more and more power. Don't mind my grammar. LOL
wow, this is so smart and helpful! I've been writing for fun for about five years now but I've finally decided to take it seriously. thanks for the tips!
I usually just use Google Drive and make a bunch of folders with documents with titles in the folders, but this looks really cool! I’d love more Nano videos, Like a beginners guide or something.
Hello Abbie ! Thanks for this tutorial. I hesitated too long. Your video got me to purchase Scrivener. Now I am getting organized ! Excellent presentation !
I found your video while looking for Scrivener tutorials. I think I'm actually going to use it now. Thanks for having a super awesome and easy to understand video. And I watched 10 Ways to Become a Faster Writer, and it instantly motivated me to write...while cooking and watching your video. I'm subscribed now so I don't miss anything. Please keep putting out awesome content.
Thanks for the video! I've heard of Scrivner for years, but I wasn't ready for the commitment of writing. Determined to write my memoir this year, I've taken the plunge (well, trial version to test the waters). Hoping this will help take me to the next level. Appreciate you 😘
Hi there Abbie Emmons! Just wanted to say that I really love you, your videos and your energie! :D I just started with writing and I had no idea where to begin, but your videos are such a big help. I'm currently using a trial version of scrivener, but now that I have watched a lot of your videos, I will buy it for sure! But how do you make scene card lay outs like this? The scene cards in this video are looking very useful. Do/can you make those in Scrivener? Keep up the good work, and again thank you so much for all the information and help!
It might have been helpful to show how you actually set up those various folders (e.g., pre-write task list, Act 1, Act 2, etc.) to begin with. It took me a while, but I figured it out. I'm more of a pantser, but it provides a good set of checks to make sure all the bases are covered.
I use google document for my writing progres and i have a lot of folders in google dockument. I have maps for contry and citys so that i can found my charecters after city and Country.
love how you format, it looks so nice! i think my least favorite part of scrivener is how it auto formats haha. this was a very helpful video, thanks abbie!!💓
so i finally caved and got scrivener (well im trialing) but idk what my life even was before this program. that said, it was super overwhelming so tysm for this video
Ahhh, Abbie! THIS video was so fun to watch, and seems like it would be super helpful if I had Scrivener (why don't I yet?!? I need to look into that again haha). Also, YES, PLEASE GIVE US A VIDEO ABOUT BLURBS, thank you kindly! :D
THAT INTRO AND OUTRO!!! (Also the fact that you were flipping through either The Blood Race or Worlds Beneath at the end... EPIC!!!!) (Haha, I saw Hawk's name because I'm a superfan, not gonna lie.) I usually use notebooks and a bunch of random google docs, but I'm thinking Scrivner would be pretty awesome to have, even if I don't outline as much. I need to do more research about Scrivner and everything it does. 😜 I literally got so excited about the new intro I wanted to scream. 😂 Anyway, awesome video, as usual. I'm just mad at myself for not checking TH-cam earlier this morning before going to work. But I'm so happy to have seen the video now.
This was super helpful! Thanks so much for making these videos! I'd love to watch one about NaNoWriMo basics for first timers. I saw your Prep-tober one but something that lays out a workflow during the month, how to stay engaged throughout, and any other tips for NaNo. Thanks!
Hey Abbie, this was a brilliant tutorial on Scrivener organization. I just bought the software and will start setting it up today. Subscribed and will get notified. Thanks!
I'm super late to this Scrivener party video, but just wanted to pop in to say I loved this, it was super informative. But mostly, love that this is a Nancy Drew fan fiction! I noticed halfway through, and I thought it was hilarious but also awesome because low key (not really) obsessed with Nancy Drew and grew up reading the books and playing the games. Great content and awesome channel. (:
WAIT WAIT WAIT A FELLOW MEMBER OF THE CLUE CREW?!?! This comment brightened my day!! HAHA I was (ahem, still am?) OBSESSED with the ND games and I've written so much fan fiction for them it's a little ridiculous. 😂 I'm so glad you like my videos!! thank you for watching 💛💛💛
@@AbbieEmmons Girl, yes! SAY IT LOUD AND PROUD!!! The majority of my childhood was spent scrolling through those forums on HerInteractive. I'm still patiently waiting for them to make a new game (they've been working on Midnight In Salem for YEARS) and definitely plan to check out that new movie that just came out! Glad to have a fellow ND rep out there in the world. (:
YAAAAS! same here! I was obsessed with the message boards omg :''') I KNOW RIGHT?? haha fun fact: I was so looking forward to Midnight in Salem, I actually composed a "fan made" soundtrack. If you type into TH-cam "Midnight In Salem soundtrack" all the songs that come up are mine 😂 STILL HOPING THEY RELEASE IT THIS YEAR LOL
Abbie Emmons DID YOU SEE THERE'S A RELEASE DATE?!?!? I got the email the other day (yes I'm subscribed to their newsletter lol). November 19th!!! Our dreams are coming true! 😂😂🖤🖤
Hey Abbie! Thanks for so many great videos :) I can't seem to find the video where you speak about your scene chart! I'd love to hear you talk more about it, where do I find the video?
Hi Abbie !! I'm a mexican girl that loves reading AND writing in English, but I still have some problems with syntaxis. I also find It difficult to write in past tense (specially when mixing all past tenses )I prefer this tenses though. Could you do a video on that? Thanks!! BtW amazing videos!!!
Yay, it was so fun learning about Scrivener! And that new intro is BRILLIANT. Also, dude. Did you suddenly get 881 subs? I'm pretty sure it was 807 yesterday... (Yes, I am that person who keeps track of sub counts XD) Maybe my eyes are tricking me
Thank you for your beautiful videos, I started using this software, thanks to your organization. However, I have a question, at minute 3:04 of your video, we see in the sub-folder Act 1, associated with the same line as the chapter concerned, we see the Label. How do you do that? On another of your videos, in the thumbnails, in corkboard mode, we see in filigree the status (in progress, Done...). I would be very grateful if you give me these tips. Thank you for your videos.
Just updated to Scrivener - I ran it on trial about 7 years back and then switched back to Novel Writing Software (from GSP) and yWriter5. Still getting up to speed on Scrivener and looking to sharpen up what I do. * The main genres I write are SF and Fantasy. Having read and processed many in-genre books (in the thousands) I have internal route maps of plot development. Characters get degrees of freedom from what would have happened. Though I sometimes write this stuff down, I find that this drains the fun out of writing the manuscript, so I usually internalise all but the important turning points. Words are important, a phrase is like a lover's caress in spring, encapsulating an idea that mustn't be lost. The rest is dross, to be livened up later with dialogue and events, all within the ambit of the 'what would have happened'. Does this sound unmechanical? It isn't. I keep word count records and I use lists with significant detail appended. In short, the details I add are sufficient to populate that hypothetical appendix, but no more. - Novel Writer has tabs for Characters, Events, Locations, Ideas, Notes, Charts and Submissions. Ideas are a dumping ground and Notes are where I work out alternate story progressions. The other tabs are backfilled as and when - but only on the principle of let's have appendices. Stuff I don't use: Relationships and personality settings, the timeline of events chart and submissions. As this program creates a daily backup, I have a separate folder for each story (over circa 6,000 words). Shorter pieces are collated as separate chapters into annual archive files - e.g. Archive yyyy.wnw, where the yyyy is say 2019. I set writing targets based on incremental wordcount... - The writing model for yWriter5 is different - for a start it's better pitched at longer works. The structure is: Project - made up of one or more Chapters, each of which has one or more Scenes. Narrative is entered into Scenes, I use a different scene for pov changes. Characters, Locations and Items are added at project level (I use this) - it's also possible to add these to each scene (I rarely bother with this). Scenes can have notes, pictures and goals which means shedloads of detail can be added without banging in a single word of narrative. YWriter5 saves scenes as rtf (which is useful) and auto-backs up each time it loads (which is a pain if all you want to do is check status). But it has wordcount and, importantly, Word Usage Count. Yippee! * You read through that!!? Award yourself forty winks (if you haven't dozed off already!) Many thx for your video ;-)
Hello! I've just discovered this - and YOU - and wanted to say THANK YOU - it's awesome. I'm wondering - is the scene card template something you made, or something which I just can't find in Scrivner...?
So after you make the short outline, do you copy and paste it into your long outline doc and then expand on it to make it long? Do you have several revisions within your outline until to concoct something you like? How do you go from story structure with percentages to outline? I do these things seemingly all the time, but it seems I'm making one document after another. Scrivener is just a way to keep it all in one place instead of all over the desktop. A good thing, but does not change my method. I want something that evolves into a first draft, not just more wasted time. At least on a computer, I'm not generating reams of paper that end up in storage.
Hi Abbie! I bought a folder and I’m filling it with my characters, outline and worldbuilding, but I definetly check Scrivener out. And I’m so happy that your channel is growing so fast! 😁
I don't want to spend money on Scrivener, so I just use Notion. You can do a lot of similar things on there as you can on Scrivener. I highly recommend it, it's free!
Whoa girl! If I had to do that much, I'd never have finished the 1st novel. I'm so glad I dreamed the whole trilogy. My characters wander up and do their thing, I'm just typing. They bring backstory with the baggage they're trailing. Scrivener keeps all their secrets. I have my blurb written too. It's my canned answer when asked, "what's your book about? "
can you go into more depth how to set up scrivener this way, as in a step by step process...I think this would be so very helpful for first time users, like myself. Thanks..BTW I love your channel!
What about book series? Like a 6 book series? How would you organize that? Would you do an overall 3 Act Structure Outline and then break it down into smaller 3 Act Structures in each book? How would you organize that in Scrivener? Would you have multiple manuscripts side by side and numbered?
Hey, you boss writer! I hope you liked this video. Comment below and tell me: how do YOU stay organized while writing a book?
i dont 😭 i’m bad at organization and it makes me very unproductive. definitely time to buy scrivener! lol
LOL I don't.
Do you have an example short outline and long outline? Your examples have truly helped me understand where to begin.

Leaping in to Scrivener for an ebook and I now consider you my new best friend. You had me at outlines!
I just started with writing and I had no idea where to begin, but your videos are such a big help.
I lowkey just want that whole template and just put it into mine ugh
That was so helpful! I feel like I put in a full day's work setting up my Scrivener.
Just downloaded Scrivener and I am so excited to start using it after seeing your video. Thanks for all the great information you share!
YAY!! I hope you love Scrivener as much as I do! 💛
I love how you are so organized and how you explain things!
Thank you so much!
this is super helpful! thanks for automating the process so that I don't have to!
I use google document for my writing progres and i have a lot of folders in google dockument. I have maps for contry and citys so that i can found my charecters after city and Country.
Good to know that I'm not the only original fiction writer who writes fanfiction.
Nacy drew! Joe! The mystery brothers and Nacy drew fanfic! That exists?! Yesssssss. Yesss
Also thank you for intriducing me to these apps
Your videos are always helpful, thank you. How about a video to put scrivener on Chromebook?
Hii! I'm from Brazil and i'm loving your videos! My Scrivener became more organized too, so thanks
I'm so glad you enjoyed this video and found it helpful, Ester!! Thank you so much for watching 💛
love how you format, it looks so nice! i think my least favorite part of scrivener is how it auto formats haha. this was a very helpful video, thanks abbie!!💓
Thank you, girl!! 💛✨
so i finally caved and got scrivener (well im trialing) but idk what my life even was before this program. that said, it was super overwhelming so tysm for this video
Your energy is addicting, subscribed.
This is literally so cool but quite overwhelming😂 Seriously u r amazing tho, whenever I watch a movie now I see all the stuff uv taught
This was immensely helpful, thank you for this video! I've watched a couple of Scrivener videos recently and your video helped me the most.
This is super useful - thank you so much for sharing!
Video about book blurbs - coming right up! ;) I'm so glad you liked this one, and omg yes you need Scrivener. like, yesterday.
(also I just noticed autocorrect all-capped "this" for no reason on me? Lol)
THAT INTRO AND OUTRO!!! (Also the fact that you were flipping through either The Blood Race or Worlds Beneath at the end... EPIC!!!!) (Haha, I saw Hawk's name because I'm a superfan, not gonna lie.)
I usually use notebooks and a bunch of random google docs, but I'm thinking Scrivner would be pretty awesome to have, even if I don't outline as much.
I need to do more research about Scrivner and everything it does. 😜
I literally got so excited about the new intro I wanted to scream. 😂
Anyway, awesome video, as usual. I'm just mad at myself for not checking TH-cam earlier this morning before going to work. But I'm so happy to have seen the video now.
THANK YOU IVIE
This was super helpful! Thanks so much for making these videos! I'd love to watch one about NaNoWriMo basics for first timers. I saw your Prep-tober one but something that lays out a workflow during the month, how to stay engaged throughout, and any other tips for NaNo. Thanks!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this video!! And thank you so much for the suggestion, that's a great idea! 💛
Hey Abbie, this was a brilliant tutorial on Scrivener organization. I just bought the software and will start setting it up today. Subscribed and will get notified. Thanks!
Totally unrelated to the video but I love your hair!!!!!
Great video, Abbie! Thanks a lot for the tips!
First timer here! Love your vid & style!
Thank you so much! 😊✨
These vids are so helpful 🙏
Thank you! Well done. Impressed enough I became a mid-level patron.
Thank you Xs3! Great help!
as always, amazing writer wednesdays! and that opener! WOOO!!
Thank you so much, Abby!! 😊💛 I'm so glad you like this new opener!
Yay, it was so fun learning about Scrivener! And that new intro is BRILLIANT.
Also, dude. Did you suddenly get 881 subs? I'm pretty sure it was 807 yesterday... (Yes, I am that person who keeps track of sub counts XD) Maybe my eyes are tricking me
Just the other day, I saw 600- something subs. Abbiee's so epic, she'll have a million subs in no time. 😁
AHHH THANK YOU SO MUCH 💛✨ um yes I'm freaking out haha :''') thank you guys!!! wow so blessed I can't even
Thank you for your beautiful videos, I started using this software, thanks to your organization.
Thanks for the help. Most appreciated.
Just updated to Scrivener - I ran it on trial about 7 years back and then switched back to Novel Writing Software (from GSP) and yWriter5. Still getting up to speed on Scrivener and looking to sharpen up what I do.
*
The main genres I write are SF and Fantasy.
-
Novel Writer has tabs for Characters, Events, Locations, Ideas, Notes, Charts and Submissions.
-
The writing model for yWriter5 is different - for a start it's better pitched at longer works. Yippee!

You read through that!!? Award yourself forty winks (if you haven't dozed off already!)
Many thx for your video
;-)
This is such a helpful vide, thank you!
I tried to imagine what George R. R. MARTIN'S Scrivener setup would look like, and my head exploded. 🤯
Hello! I've just discovered this - and YOU - and wanted to say THANK YOU - it's awesome.
I'm wondering - is the scene card template something you made, or something which I just can't find in Scrivner...?
I also think of scenes in terms of music that I've heard. Glad to see i'm not the only one :).
You're definitely not alone!
i want a video about blurb! please, and thank you for this video about your process, help me a lot♡
You sound so organized, Nadia! That's awesome. I think you'd love Scrivener! 💛✨ and wow, thank you so much!
I, personally, use a mixture of Notion, Google Docs, my notebook and Wattpad to organize my writing :)
HAHA YES.. I've been told I get a little crazy with outlining 😂 A BLURB IS SO GREAT TO HAVE WHEN FACED WITH THAT QUESTION. good thinking!
can you go into more depth how to set up scrivener this way, as in a step by step process...I think this would be so very helpful for first time users, like myself.
