      I'll take those any day over mud guards, a belt or brake pads. OK, maybe not the brake pads, because they keep you safe.

    Ryan, thank you for your positive outlook and your wonderful video's, I'm 59 and a heart attack survivor with two heart surgery's under my belt, my wife is 57 and had her hip replaced 4 months ago. Last summer I fell in love with cycling during the pandemic, at my best I was riding across Boise using the greenbelt and doing 30 mile rides. My wife wanted to ride and even bought a really nice bike, but her hip was so bad she maybe only got a mile on it before the pain became too much. Four months ago she had it replaced, once the smoke cleared I got her out on her bike, she never really rode bikes as a kid (I grew up on mountain bikes), so each day is a learning adventure and a new challenge for her. Things we never think about are huge challenges to her, like how to start riding from a standstill, but we take it day by day and I'm happy to say that she's improving rapidly. We saw your Ragbrai videos (and Kara and Nates) and she was hooked, so we started training so we can attend next summer, on each ride she recites your catch phrase. Yesterday we did 24 miles, we cheated and stopped to have a bite to eat at a park, but 4 months out of hip surgery and doing 24 miles is pretty awesome, she paid for it, but she just keeps the 'Duzer' attitude going and doesn't stop.
    We have a long way to go before next July, but we are committed. keep up the good work, and know that it's making a difference...
    Thank You
    Paul & Michelle....

      I too was inspired by the past RAGBRAI videos of Ryan’s (&. Buses Bikes & Beer) and at 66, did my first RAGBRAI! Amazing experience and looking forward to next year. You can do it, just remember it’s an event not a race and enjoy the ride! Look forward to you joining the other 15-20,000 of us this coming summer!

    My grandpa started riding a bike at the age of 71...he would meet me at my bus stop which was 3 miles away....all the kids would laugh at me...but, I didn't care..at least he was there to walk me back home...besides the bike, his next favorite was riding horses...he rode horses till he was 95...and he was always active all his life...plus he was a Veteran as well...he finally passed at the age 99.....I believe you will do whatever you set your mind on Ryan...love all your videos 💯💯🥰🥰 you rock 🎸 man ..

    Does your bike use the same brake pads for the front and back? Maybe a swap would would be possible.

    • @zenofthemoment
      @zenofthemoment 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same thought here. Rear pads are probably in pretty great shape, all things considered. Then again, I don't think I'd personally want to cruise down steep hills front brake only.

    • @dudeonbike800
      @dudeonbike800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They most certainly are. But it's funny, because people usually go through their rear pads faster. It's the go-to brake and usually used more, despite the front brake doing the REAL work!
      Silly that he didn't carry just ONE pair at the least. Riding in wet, muddy conditions really necessitate bringing spares. (And it's not like Ryan hasn't encountered mud before! 😂) Disc brakes are great, but they're not indestructible!

    So I'm just laying in bed watching this. My wife is next to me and hears you taking. She asks, who is that. I said it's Ryan Van Duzer that does all the biking and other adventures.
    Her response... the bean burrito guy?
    Yep! Good to know she listens when I tell her about you and the videos. Haha
    I'm visiting family in San Diego and brought my bike. Did 35 miles facing traffic, stop lights and hills. Your adventure seems so much better.

    Rockies appear to be the same as the Sierra's. Mid morning small puffy clouds appear and they grow till afternoon when they dump hail, water and lightning. By 8:00 in the evening it's clear again. This repeats most of the summer in the 7,000 ft and up mountains. Appreciate all the blood, sweat and tears you put into your work. Cheers from CALIFORNIA.

    Love what you do - thank you! Maybe an idea for an episode or two. You put your body through quite a bit - what do you off-the-bike to keep in shape and ready for these adventures? I think a lot of people would like to see that. You don't just hop up and decide to do these types of adventures - you have to be ready. I'd love to see you share that and give ideas for us weekend warriors.

    enjoyed another inspiring video. Thanks! Today I had a "Duzer" moment. I rode to the coast and did about 30 miles or so and then was headed back to pick up my daughter who had been working on a school project. I got a text that they weren't done and they needed another couple of hours, so I took a dinner break and then continued on for another 15 miles. When I told my wife that I was stopping for dinner on the trail, she asked me if I was eating cold beans on a tortilla :)

    I like that you keep showing the signs of your progress on your jacked up legs. I suspect you feel the same way I do about this. I've left buckets of sweat all over some of the most rugged mountains of the US, Asia and Europe; but the mountains that mean the most to me in the years after are those where I left blood, skin, and flesh from scrapes, cuts, gashes, leeches, claws, and even some fangs. You're properly earning your adventure and I give you much respect.

    To answer your question of why we do hard things? My wife asks me that, there is a lot more mental fortitude that I think we can tap into that pushes me toward hard things. It’s the let me prove this to myself. I’m running my first 50k in two weeks and it’s this thought of pushing myself past what I think I can do to push my mind toward what I can do. It’s that truth of Christ that I can do ALL things through Him who strengthens me. Thanks for sharing your adventures bro. Mike

    I hope people watching your videos learn a few things from you, the way you encourage and boost other people happiness but also your happiness when you are you biggest supporter and fun of your self is very important.
    Recently been reading 1 of the last book of Mel Robbins (The high 5 habit) and in first chapter she talking about high 5 your self in the bathroom mirror as soon you wake up in the morning it may sound silly /stupid but be a big supporter of yourself and keep pushing /motivating yourself is essential I think for happy life and it's obviously helps too in hardest moments!

    I know it’s not this video content but I really really enjoyed watching YOU enjoy being in NYC & the surrounding areas. I actually miss urban bicycling. I consider it a form of mountain biking! Constantly avoiding the cars, up and down the curbs, in and out of the roads, discovering new areas! Thanks for the content :)

    I had that brake noise when I glazed the pads after a rain. I wired brushed them and they worked fine. I hope you didn't damage the rotor. You can horse shoe an axial or snap an axial both failures can

    The San Juan is heaven on earth. My first ride in the Rockies was ascending Dry fork to the CT and blast down Hoffein's Connection. I later learned a better ride is to climb up from Junction Creek and descend Hoffeins and climb back up Dry Fork to the CT. That section of Ct back down to Junction Creek is some of the best flow on the planet. Lots of memories coming back watching you grind. From OH, but Durango is where I want to be. Congrats on this adventure.

      @@duzer I try to get a bike trip together every couple of years. I always start in Durango. You can go to Moab, Sedona, Grand Junction/Fruita, or stay in the alpine forests and go north to Salida, Vail, Breckenridge. All within a days drive. The list goes on. So many epic rides. Hermosa Creek is still my favorite ride in the San Juan. Hooked on your channel.

    I often wonder if I miss out on something if I push myself really hard when bikepacking. This trip makes me reflect on that. Do we just gain more if we push harder? Perhaps I just start asking these questions because I'm getting old myself. Great episodes though. Love the drone shots. I start my day with coffee and these pictures.

    Brilliant photography yet again and lots of respect for filming the switchback climb with steep consequences (17:10-17:30). Stay safe and watch those prairie dogs of whatever ran from you at top of 17:30 -- wouldn't want one stepping out in front on a downhill especially with only 50% brakes; yikes! Stupid squirrels here in VA as well as deer darting out are what keep me alert on the bike.
