My guest today is an expert in the development of self-confidence. Dr. Ivan Joseph is a high-performance coach, a sports psychologist, and the author of You Got This: Mastering the Skill of Self-Confidence. He also gave a TEDx talk on the topic, titled “The Skill of Self Confidence,” that has received 19 million views and counting!
In addition to being a phenomenal speaker, Dr. Ivan is an incredible coach, and his PH.D. in Sports Psychology has given him an inside look of how athletes perform under pressure. As a professor and soccer coach at Graceland University in 2006, Ivan developed the soccer program from the ground up. In just 5 years, he led both the men’s and women’s teams to #1 national rankings and helped the men’s team win their first-ever national championship. To this day, he’s regularly called on to support national team programs and help them succeed.
Ivan currently is the Vice-Provost, Student Affairs at Dalhousie University. He leads the university’s effort to promote interconnectedness and belonging among a diverse student body drawn from across the country and around the globe.
It was truly a pleasure to have Dr. Ivan on The School of Greatness today. We had a truly enlightening conversation on the mental and physical routines that are essential to success.
Join me on Episode 982 to learn all about the science of self-confidence and how to command your mind with confidence expert Dr. Ivan Joseph!

My takeaway is that it's very important to love yourself and believe in yourself! Also to think you can do something even if no one else does. I want to be a public speaker and reach thousands of people with my videos. I know I don't have the natural talent for it, but I still believe that I can do it!

Too many coaches try to coach every athlete the same way! But you have to coach each one individually to have success. Same with parenting, in business, and leading in any way.

The thing about lying to yourself really impacted me. I think its key how knowledgeable you are about a certain thing. The more you learn about something the more you can legitimately convince your subconscious mind. If the path of learning leads to a different outcome than you want, stop the learning process in that area once you reach a desirable state. So I guess the problem with self talk is to much, or to little information. Thanks for the awesome content!

Great interview! I really struggled with the whole "lying to yourself" issue. No matter how I adjusted my self talk, there were certain things I just couldn't believe about myself or convince myself were true about me. What changed? Jesus. I met Jesus.. for real, for real. Not some Church version of Jesus. I met the God of the universe, who shows up and speaks back. It was a slow process, but over the better part of a decade I was able to take Jesus' word (the Bible, the Truth).. and meditate on that until I began to believe it for ME. I saw huge shifts in myself. Completely defeating fear in my life. Destroying 99.99% of anxiety. Becoming a risk taker. Comfortable in uncomfortableness. Thriving on confrontation. And so much more. Maybe I was weak. Maybe my self-awareness wouldn't let me "go there.." but I had to find truth, THE Truth, before my heart would allow me to begin to believe it. I'm still, by most worldly standards "a nobody." But inside I feel like an absolute GIANT. And there WILL be a day when I step into my purpose and destiny on this plant. It's no longer if or I hope or when ... it's only a matter of time 😁⚡️Much love. Thanks for this interview! Great stuff! God bless

Energy tools deeply change ingrained beliefs & patterns. I loved seeing the beginnings of using energy by questioning & muscle testing at 49:31-51:51 (you don't have to push that hard when testing)! Now if you use energy tools to do the rest of the releasing, magic & miracles happen!

Love the rainy day notes. And ohhh boy, listening to my intuition. Confidence has been the thing that derailed me in life. AND perfectionism! BUT what happens when others place so much emphasis on perfection? I’ve lost jobs because companies didn’t understand the process - especially marketing. If you screw up while trying things and get fired? How do you interpret that for another opportunity? Do you tell them what you learned and you were let go?
