    A similar event occurred with the English, pushing out and occupying the best Irish land, and these consequences persist to the present. But I really doubt that the Irish will be successful in getting compensation for their land grab. It’s pretty much what one tribe has been doing to another tribe since time immemorial

      false equivalence
      the crimes of the _past_ NEVER legitimately exonerate the crimes of the _present_
      further, while one may choose to attribute the behaviour of the "primitive" "uncivilized" "savage"
      tribal peoples
      the "christian" "civilized" European monarchies / tyrannies deem themselves inherently superior
      in morals, ethics, civility and hence have implicitly, even explicitly taken upon themselves
      in their supremacist ideology ALL of the moral, ethical, spiritual, legal implications of their actions
      with no recourse to the kind of rationalization / apologism to which you refer

      People that have lives there for over seven generations have as much right to live on the land as anyone else….theyve become native themselves. The biggest problem is modern people think they own the land, but the genuine indigenous people knew they could never make that claim. We are custodians and harmonious protectors…not owners! Titles are Roman treachery and theft.

    With respect, The world continues to be deceived. Only when people recognize and cease the imposition of one's will onto another will humanity evolve for the better. When oppression ends, love will begin. Until such time the world will forever remain convinced the old ways are loving ways.
    People, any person or institution claiming to love you, only to impose its will upon you, is either mistaken or deliberately trying to deceive.
    You will resist these words to your core.

    The official name of Canada, i.e., the Dominion of Canada, directly refers to the text of the Doctrine of Discovery. No other country uses this morally repugnant title since everyone else has a modicum of decency. Though largely symbolic, changing this title should be front and centre on any path to reconciliation.

    • @Caesar316
      @Caesar316 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The government of Canada hasn't used the name Dominion of Canada since the 1960s. Its not on any official document or institution. They even changed Dominion Day to Canada Day. It also has nothing to do with the Doctrine of Discovery which was also rescinded a LONG time ago. I think we're good.

    • @reneedelacruz5103
      @reneedelacruz5103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In The United States, it was used in a 1998 court case as well as a 2005 supreme court case. The first case in which it was used was in 1823, Johnson Vs. Mclntosh and this case was the base for what The United States property Laws were based upon. Native people only had the right to occupy the land ( like a fish occupies water), and it could be taken at any time, and only white land-owing men could own and discover land. Watch the Ted Talk by Mark Charles. It's very intriguing and informative.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reneedelacruz5103 AND how legal cases work is based on precedent, meaning a cases long ago cited it, then over time as other cases built up, those would be cited rather than the doctrine of discovery because basically when you do that, people say "oh, whats that" and then you have to admit "well, it basically means the legal system is based on imperial conquest'.
      Which also technically means I can go to ANY piece of land and say "well I discovered this, therefore I own it since I put this house up and occupy it". Of course the courts would laugh at that, and what THAT means is that the entire court system is ONLY based on imperial conquest and has no justification AT ALL. Which is largely the case.

  • @jimmyurban
    @jimmyurban ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This piece is is misleading, as is the title’s primary word “Doctrine” of Discovery. It implies to many that the Catholic Church declared a formal doctrine religiously about aboriginal rights as a matter of faith or morality. The papal bulls whereby the issue of competing political land interests among the European political powers were arbitrated by the papacy to minimize the risk of military conflicts unfortunately had little respect or consideration at the time for legitimate entitlements of indigenous peoples. But this was not any formal religious “doctrine” of the Church and the term’s use here is misleading especially in that that the Church formally and specifically repudiated the colonial powers’ abrogation of indigenous rights and freedoms in a sixteenth century declaration. The term “Doctrine of Discovery” was only first coined by the US chief justice in the nineteenth century. The use of the term now politically may have more to do here and elsewhere in the current media with anti-catholic bashing and/or compensation goals.

      "..the Church formally and specifically repudiated the colonial powers’ abrogation of indigenous rights and freedoms in a sixteenth century declaration."
      Is there a name for this declaration? Which year, specifically?
      The video does clearly state that it was a US Supreme Court decision, not the Catholic Church, that used the DoD as a principle to settle a legal case.
