As Link’s mom I totally understand the reason why an animal would be sent home if they’re stressed -which is why we were extremely happy with the service we did receive, and understanding when she wasn’t fully dry. Link hates the dryer at home and at the groomers, and doesn’t like baths & we try very hard to make a safe and calm environment when we bathe her at home. She’s okay with clipping nails and brushing but if already stressed and irritated it doesn’t work. Either way we love you and your videos Vanessa and you absolutely are a pro at what you do!

Thanks Trishani! This was of course not to be directed towards Links training, as many Huskeys are like this with the bath/dryer (as we know). Link was only used as an example of how a video may seem like I'm pushing through a groom on a stressed animal, when in reality I didn't actually complete the service and she went home still wet.

I got a 4 month old puppy and when he was almost 5 months I took him for a grooming session and the groomer mentioned that he was a bit difficult to work with. Fair enough, it was his first time and I havent done much with him at home.
After that I started bathing and brushing him regularly and the second visit another month later was a big improvement, as the groomer said he was much better.

Getting animals accustomed to being handled is also a safety issue. You don't want a dog to bite a toddler because their tail got yanked. Humans have much thinner skin than dogs, so what seems like an appropriate response to a dog could be dangerous or potentially fatal to a human.

@@donnae9566 honestly, who tf asked you?! Some cats do need to be bathed, even as regularly as every month, which is what I did for my cat. • @ItsBecauseImBored
      @ItsBecauseImBored ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@skylar_kada Well Donna is right that *generally* there is no need to bathe a cat as they usually are self cleaning (unlike a dog). It isn't "ridiculously strict rules" to not bathe cats but a common place recommendation. As RP said however there are plenty of situations where it does become necessary and I'm guessing that OP probably does it because of one of those reasons. You just shouldn't bathe a cat regularly for literally no reason as it will be unnecessary stress and can also dry out their skin. Normally cats will not just start to "smell like an alley stray" when they are healthy. Maybe try changing their diet first or have a look at their teeth if you think your cats smells. Or maybe your cat just really likes to get into dirt and you're justified in bathing it, I don't know your situation - just know that isn't typically necessary for cats.
Edit: And it absolutely does not mean a cat is not well cared for if it isn't bathed. More so the opposite. Bathing should be avoided when possible.

It seems like a good idea to find out so you can work with your furball and help them feel more confident. For example my dog doesn't enjoy having his paws handled, so we practice at home all the time. It is not the nail trimming, it is the restriction of the paw. He has never had his quick nicked but the jerking behavior of the leg could cause it and become a problem. So we work on it at home.

      1. Here’s one-
Make sure you have a brush that’s appropriate for your dogs fur or hair (There is a difference)
      2. I don’t do long strokes with your brush. Support the skin with the opposite hand. Short strokes. skin should not move and slide w/your brush.
      3. Don’t press harder or tug harder if an area is particularly thick or matted. Keep the same amount of pressure you just have to stay out of that area longer.
      4. An area of thick hair can easily be right next to an area of thin hair. You don’t want to use the same pressure on both.
Like a shepherds rear end, thick on his haunches and just below that is the hock that has no hair.
Customer was brushing the haunch (back of back leg) and accidentally going low enough to scratch the hock. So the dog didn’t like it’s back end being brushed.
Once I can get the dog to understand that mistake won’t happen again..he was fine. 😌

I worked hard on getting my dog used to being bathed, but I can't get her over her dislike for being brushed. I brush her every day, treats, etc, she just doesn't like it. The groomer thinks she has sensitive skin, so is okay with her being a bit mouthy when she's brushed. I did do bite control training, so she only grabs at the brush, doesn't bite down. Everything else is fine. Bathing, blow dry, nails, trimming. Just the brush bothers her.

My German Shepherd mix is eleven now. Had her since she was 2 months old. Showering her and soaping her paws are fine 👌but not "blow dry" and brushing her fur. She ain't no tolerate brushing 🙁I even resorted to brushing her while walking 😅Works better than brushing her at home, but my poor back and legs.
It's ok, I'll cut off her matted fur 😉

You could try grooming gloves, they are gloves with rubber bristles on the fingers and palms so you can brush your dog while petting them. It tends to work for animals that don't like the act of brushing, as they see it more as being pet.

I tried latex gloves, the ones you get on a box at the pharmacy (equigroomers are nonexistent in argentina). Both my dogs absolutely loathe brushing but are fine with the gloves because I'm basically petting and scratching them but because the gloves are different to my skin hairs tend to stick more and my hands remain perfectly clean.
Both have short-ish hair, I'm not sure this would work with a long haired breed though

Teach teacher! This is exactly what classroom teachers have to put up with from politicians and others who refuse to do the job or try to tell you how to do it. The owner/parents job to socialize the child. A teacher provides structure and learning environment, but a behavior therapist he/she is not!

It tears your body apart and finding a good place to learn isn't easy. A lot of shops are a bit "niche" in the types of people they hire/train. Some shops will throw you in as a bather and push you to go faster faster faster, some shops will keep you as a bather for as long as possible and dangle groomer training in front of you like a carrot on a stick, other shops just kind of leave you be and you have to take initiative and figure things out by yourself. There is a shortage of qualified groomers pretty much everywhere, and pay varies wildly. In the city nearby they can charge $160 for a 40lb doodle, in my town you'd only be able to charge about $65 for the same dog. You can make anywhere from like $15k-$80k+. 50% commission + tips is what you should expect, but unfortunately some shop owners will try to cheap out and offer you hourly or below 40%. You really have to pursue it on your own and take your further education into your own hands. Not many people get good mentors.

It's also pretty heartbreaking sometimes. Having to give back dogs that are clearly mistreated and neglected, seeing irresponsible ownership, watching your favorite dogs decline in health, trying to educate people and have them just believe that you want more money from them... it's especially hard when you see elderly people get dogs that they can't care for and they can't afford and they're lovely people, but the dog deserves better but the elderly need something to care for/keep the loneliness at bay. It's a pretty emotional job. A lot of people just think we make cute dogs even cuter and play with puppies all day. But it's so much more than that...

I've learned so much about grooming for your videos. Before I used to have to manhandle my dogs to get them through the hair cut process and whatnot but that was only after we had stopped letting them go to the groomers (their last service was horrendous). I ended up doing some light research for it so I could be better for all of our sanities and found your videos in my recommendations. When I tell you after I started mimicking what I see you do my grooming has gotten SO much better! Bought the clippers, shears and everything. I felt like a professional myself lol but boy is it tiring (I have seven I have to go through).
Don't let any judgemental comments get to you. You are a gem to dog owners like me. I would not be a better furmom for my dogs without emulating you and wash days would still be a nightmare for us all without you!

Several years ago, I worked at a doggie daycare that had a grooming salon. A few owners expected a full groom no matter how it was achieved. They always booked appointments with the one groomer that was in the back room. Even with the door shut, we could hear the chaos. I felt so sorry for those babies. They were labeled "difficult" and treated poorly, all because their owners wouldn't train them. And of course, each time they came back, their behavior got worse. Dogs learn who is willing to strap them down in all kinds of weird positions while using clippers on them. The whole situation was sad. I quit after a few months.

For my dog (who has a diagnosed anxiety condition), paying for our fear free groomer is 100% worth it. Her and I work together between his sessions with her and the work I do at home to make his appointments as low stress as possible. It’s definitely an extra cost though, and yes he’s there for a few hours! I wouldn’t expect to get the amount of dedicated time she gives him if I was paying a regular price.

99.9% of any dog’s “problem” behavior is usually the owner’s responsibility.
Training & positive reinforcement is possible with a dog of any age. 5-10 minutes of “problem-focused” training a couple of times per day, done consistently, can typically eliminate the undesirable behavior. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment in their relationship with their pet.

Thank you for saying this. It helps people understand better when they realize they need to work with their dog. The same is true for vet visits. Fear free is great but not everyone is trained for it and not everyone (professionals and owners alike) have the time and money. Desensitization is wonderful and positive reinforcement is amazing. But the vet or groomer cannot be the only one doing anything. Owners need to step up and do their part cause they have the most influence and time with their pets

It has to be done though. I mean grooming. One of my cats would scream and yell and hiss. My mom would joke it sounds like I was killing him. But he was all talk. When I would stop, hed come back purring and wanting pets. But he's a long hair cat who gets mats easily in his fine yet thick fluff. So it has to be done. And here he is, much older, and absolutely LOVES brushing now. It took me a long time of brushing, praising, treats, and yes.. dealing with his absolute wailing.

We have been working with them since they were months old to have them desensitized to brushing, nail clippers, bathing, blow dryers etc and they STILL have individual sensitivities
We had a groomer that was willing to work with us and we took them regularly so that it could become as normal to them as eating and sleeping and going for a walk.
To this day our female hates baths but loves brushing and our male loves baths and dislikes brushing and nail clipping. LOL. The point is they don’t over react and they aren’t highly stressed or aggressive so it’s all good and they know it’s just part of life
It is on THE OWNER to train their own dog with the cooperation of an amazing groomer like you😉

Most people either have no idea how much work it will be or dont have the time to give them the work needed.
Now, even a relatively well behaved husky can be dramatic and excitable/loud because of their high energy, but a lot of it is jus owners with NO clue what theyre getting into.

It wasn't bc he was never trained; he was just really scared of water (he's fine with brushing, getting nails clipped, etc) so when they took him to get a professional grooming session done for the first time, my parents warned the groomer about this.
Turns out that there are ways to bathe him that doesn't freak him out as much and will be a good boy as long as someone pets him while using the nozzle! I can only imagine how stressful this job would be with poorly trained dogs
