    I grew up in a household where we bred standard poodles. They are BRILLIANT dogs. Don't underestimate one. And don't underestimate how cute they are in a puppy cut instead of that absurd fancy shave. A house poodle is adorable! Our breeding lass was an absolute diva. If she got her paws wet outside, or, gods forbid SNOWY, she would immediately run to the bathroom, hop in the tub, and wait for a human to come wash her feet clean.

    • @lilyfox313
      @lilyfox313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      A puppy cut is actually a poodle cut used to accentuate the muscles of a growing poodle, and includes clean face and feet. I know you mean more of a "doodle" cut with beard and rounded paws, but thought I'd give you some trivia anyway!

    • @EmmaChihuahua81
      @EmmaChihuahua81 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Honestly, until I met a friend that breeds, shows, and does sporting events with her dogs I didn't understand the cut.
      It really does change the speed of a poodle in the water. The standard poodle cut is designed for maximum efficiency in the water whilst keeping them warm.
      The only two breeds of dogs that I have seen more at home in the water are labs and newfies.
      Labs and standard poodles share a similar build, but a poodle sheds A LOT less.

    The longer I've been a groomer the more I've come to appreciate the "poodle-y" parts of the traditional cut and will happily apply them to any dog that could use it. Shaved face? No gross beard gunk or waterfalls after a drink. Banded puff tail? That gets rid of the part that is usually the most matted. Clean feet? Yeah they're fussy to do but they get rid of all the mats between the toes, make it easier to wipe before they come in and are great if your pup is prone to foot yeast outbreaks or picking up burrs

      Yeah I remember when I was a kid and thought poodles weren't even "real" dogs (as in dog-like), thanks to poodles shown in cartoons and movies. As an example in the movie 'Look Who's Talking Now' they made the poodle an annoying fancy girl who didn't like the mutt in the family. As a girl who loved dogs I didn't consider them very dog-like. Thanks to exposure later in life, I've learned what awesome dogs they are. The intelligence and temperament is hardly ever short from wonderful.
      Maybe being a French breed they got some bad press due to politics and it stuck to our subconscious? I'm from Finland but consumed a lot of media from USA and UK through tv as a kid.

    A lot of people dont realise what they want is a Poodle, not a Doodle. There is no compromise between a Poodle and whatever other dog breed, that can be found in a cross-bred / “designer” dog. People think Poodles are some kind of effeminate dog, therefore they have to get some kind of Doodle. Poodles are literally hunting dogs and water retrievers, theyre very versatile and useful work dogs.
    Plenty of good breeders for Poodles too, since the standards people have for these dogs are quite high (at least in Europe). Poodle owners tend to be enthusiasts for dog training and obedience, never known a Poodle owner that didnt train their dog.

    "Hair" and "fur" apparently mean single coat (hair) and double coat (fur). Somewhat a specialized term for dogs, otherwise generally the same in most situations.
    Edit: See Rebecca Hicks' and cynthia tomlin's comments below for even more details, this got more in-depth than anticipated lol.

    • @y_fam_goeglyd
      @y_fam_goeglyd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Didn't know that. Thank you! I thought they were interchangeable terms, but having said that, I've only ever used hair for my dogs: greyhounds - short-haired, not 100% allergen free, but pretty close to it. Probably as much to do with their skin as their hair, because they can dry out if you're not careful, especially in winter. Adding a spoon of olive oil or cod liver oil to their food can help (they *love* the latter!). I occasionally feed him tuna in sunflower oil, which doesn't get drained, and is mixed up in his complete dog meal.
      Reducing the amount of meal when they stop racing is a good thing to do (I reckon it's the same for older dogs as they slow down irrespective of breed) because they can develop kidney stones if their amount goes over 16% protein. So we take some higher protein "crunchies" out and replace it with wet food, which only usually has between 6-9% protein.
      Our old blue boy, the most stoic dog I've ever known, didn't let on he wasn't feeling good, despite him being fine with vets. This one day we had no idea at all that he was feeling bad. We only discovered the blood-covered stone when he passed it, and he screamed like a human! (No exaggeration, I thought one of my toddlers has been scared to death!) Poor boy must have been in agony, as it wasn't exactly small! So be careful if you have older dogs.

    My grandparents would do a similar cut on their standard poodle. POODLES ARE THE BEST DOGS. I find it so frustrating that people discriminate against them. I love all dogs, but I seriously love a standard poodle. We lived with my grandparents on and off growing up, and their two poodles were the best. The mini came later, but their standard was around from the time I was born, until I was 13 years old. There are many pictures of the two of us, both babies together. He was a great dog. Of all the grandchildren, I was the most heartbroken when he died. I was the only grandchild who really saw him as _my_ dog, not just my grandparents’ dog. He is the dog that taught me as an infant to love dogs. He was my companion always. He came with us when my grandfather walked me to school. He once got excited and knocked me off my bike into a bunch of ivy but I found it funny. He was gentle with every baby in our family. The best dog.

    When I did dog walking, the miniature poodle I walked was probably the most delightful dog I've met and I owned a golden retriever(who I loved). An adorable wee beast with a big personality and tons of loyalty. I always thought of them as froo-froo dogs but I was really wrong.

    my service dog is a standard poodle. i’m growing him out into an asian fusion clip and he’s looking so cute! he’s very much the typical poodle temperament to me, which includes being incredibly charming, which makes sense since when i asked the groomer he’s been going to since he was a tiny baby if she missed him when she changed salons she said she’d been “missing that boy like crazy!” haha. he’s also reportedly very well behaved for whoever grooms him, which i’m endlessly proud of.

    I adore a poodle! I never gave them much thought before becoming a groomer, but now I get so many doodles with horrible and boring coats that an actual poodle booking in makes me squeal on delight! Got to do clean face and feet on a six month old miniature last month, I was completely in love. As soon as I can afford to I am buying a toy poodle and if she'll put up with it let me creative grooming side run wild! Pom poms here we come!

    I LOVE STANDARD POODLES ! You did a great cut on this boy, he looked so good..... it's funny but when you mentioned the "paw pulling back " when shaving them, I had to laugh because my poodle used to do that too, it was so funny....but after her grooming was done, she'd break into a serious session of zoomies 😂🐾💕

    “Today, just for fun, I am giving Tontu some little leg warmers….” Reminds me of a Rough-legged Hawk, which is feathered all the way down to its feet! Tontu, however, is far more adorable than fierce! 😂

    Fabulous modified Poodle cut and a LOVELY Standard Poodle. I wish more people looking for non-shedding dogs would look at the purebred Poodle over all the doodle mixes! A responsibly bred Poodle is a fabulous dog and not really that more expensive than a ill-bred doodle mix!

      It’s a shame so many people are paying big$ for “doodles” They can be delightful dogs, but at the end of the day they are crossbreeds and you never know what you’re going to get. Yes, there are breeders out there that have several generations of poodle crossbreeds under their belts. It’s important to do the research when buying a puppy.

      Edit: they aren't solidly one breed like a purebred. A goldendoodle could be 31% poodle 69% poodle et.c so they become glorified mutts. Personally though I couldn't care less; I love mutts and I believe in adoption and not purchase to each his own.

    • @stefan020290
      @stefan020290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Account-xm6vj they don't have great genetics? You are kidding right? Breeding doesnt occur in nature, at least not to the extent humans did it with dogs. The Mutt IS the natural form for canine genetics. Breeds always leed to inbreeding in the end, otherwise you cant maintain the characteristics of a certain breed. Look at Pugs or German Shepherds to see what's wrong with that. One has problems breathing and with their eyes, the other gets hip problems very early in life.

    • @Account-xm6vj
      @Account-xm6vj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@stefan020290 I worded myself completely wrong there! I mean to say a poodle is 100% poodle so the number there is solid. BUT a crossbred (goldendoodle for example) may be 51% poodle 49% golden etc. Those numbers are not solid so it is essentially a glorified mutt at the end of all of it. Crossbreds and mutts have fantastic genetics. I have a mutt and have had many mutts and they have very few health issues :)

    Poodles are such wonderful dogs, in all sizes! And also, the "show cuts" for them originate from them being used to hunt waterfowl! Ive never seen them as "froufrou" dogs really, just elegant and strong. They're naturally very beautiful, and also hardy as hell.

    There are actually 4 poodle sizes, or at least we have 4 here in Germany😊 The one that isn't recognized everywhere, is actually my favourite, the "Kleinpudel". It's a size between the standard and the miniature poodle at 35-45 cm (~14-18 in).

      My first dog was something along that size. We had a family friend who was breeding poodles, and breeding down from Standard. They gave us this dog when I was 2 years old, and I grew up with her. Her name was Scarlet O'Hara, and I didn't do the naming, but I sure did love her. She didn't much like kids, but when I grew up a little and was less loud and rambunctious, she and I were pretty tight.

    Angel dog! I remember reading about poodle history and that they began as working dogs, as you mentioned. Also read that the poodle is ranked second as the most intelligent breed of dog. Their image of poofy, foo-foo dogs is appearance based only. Tontu (sp?) is such a good boy too--I can see why you love grooming him.

    I have a mutant giant for a standard poodle. His color is the same as this one. He is the smartest dog hands down. However, he will not swim. He loves to lay in the splash pad of our pool. He also rinses his feet by running through the splash pad before coming inside after his romps outside. He is truly my joy in life. I enjoy your videos, whether large dogs or small. It’s the transformation.
