RX8s’ wankel/rotary engines are less reliable than similar-power piston engines, but the majority of problems are caused by neglect through not keeping oil topped up or switching the engines off cold (the required deflooding risking scoring). The rear bearings of S1 cars do fail, but using heavier oil helps substantially. Most of the issues can be avoided for a long time by getting a compression test done before purchase (too many unscrupulous sellers lie to get rid of a damaged car!), checking ignition coils and regular oil level checks (I’ve had many piston cars that drink oil faster). The cars are so cheap now that you can throw one away and lose little (but insist on a comp test before buying and get new coils). Did I say get a comp test done and get new coils? I’ve done over 100,000 miles in RX8s with no engine problems whatsoever.
My dad has had a Land Rover Discovery 2 since 2012. It has had some issues, like ABS, TC and HDC warning lights going off for no reason at all (one time the ABS warning light went off, and my dad had to brake on the snow; the ABS was working very well!), and a minor leak from the steering assist. We tried many times to get them fixed, but after the 6th time we undestood it wasn't worth it. Now it makes a weird screetch sound when you accelerate too hard (I think it's the engine belt). It never left us on foot though, unlike a Range Rover Sport from 2010 that we bought in 2020. That one left us in the middle of nowhere because apparently there was metal in the fuel tank, the ECU detected it and it instantly shut off the engine. We did fill up the car at a very sus looking gas pump though. Bought it for €10.000, €3000 to fix the damage. Didn't do anything weird after that. Update: It died again

This guy's hilarious. The editor is hella apt. I typically have issues with list videos when it comes to cars cuz it's easy to produce but information can be mismatched. Love this tho
yeah but quite frankly, I can't complain, didn't lose much of that 'feeling' you get when watching a Topcarstv video... way better than had it been a boring voice actor, which is what I was worried about, but Ian actually did quite good
The thing about the RX8 is: if you truly want one, get the Facelift version. They fixed SO many issues of the engine by adding a third oil injector and increasing the oil pressure and they are generally pretty reliable. The pre-facelift ones though, if it using the premix workaround (or having the facelift improvements added) will break down eventually.
Remember the Cadiddle-yak Cimarron? The Catera? The Lincoln Versailles? The bustle-back Imperial? A Chevy Cavalier, an Opel. a '75 Granada, ans a Plymouth Volare, all dressed like a certain politician's next porn star ex-assignation, and about as expensive to maintain. And as reliable. "Lovers come and lovers go, but herpes is forever."
Rx8 original owner 130k miles. Replaced plugs wires and coills, water pump and belts, several cabin oil and intake filters, brakes and rotors. Overflow bottle, both door locks, aircontrol solenoids, clutch pedal, emissions fan. Total repair and maintenance about £4,000. Did most of the work myself. I have to keep the car and sell my much newer bmw n20 motor car due to the reliability. Bmw has lost oil cooler gasket and timing covers gaskets. Timing chains likely to fail soon. Rx8 has been more reasonable to fix.
Both the Alfa 166 2.4JTD and the Jag S-type 4.0 V8 are cheaper to maintain and more reliable than their german rivals in my experience (the Jag is better to drive too). I have spend the equivalent of 30usd for repairs on the Jag for more than 40k km (25k miles) and I drive it like I stole it every single day. I'm a fan of your videos, but this time you've got it wrong with those two.
Those S-types get more flak than they deserve to, yes they're expensive to maintain but it isn't like something breaks on those every month. I've always wanted a 4.2 S-type R.
I still have my Xtype and love it. Quite reliable and I have taken it three times across Europe already. I watch these videos from time to time but they are far from truth. Maintain any of these cars as any cars should be maintained and they will not disappoint. But then you wouldn’t get all these video clicks!!!
If it wasn't raced, it's a good car. My father has a X350 XJ8 with compressor (super V8) and it did cost 43ct/km including parking tickets and everything. With LPG. The predecessor, a X300 XJ8 4.0 97 cost 35ct/km and was cheaper than my mum's Lada Niva (38ct/km). Both cars with LPG.
My friend had a nice SL600. He went nearly bankrupt on it. Car has Engine Management System, meaning it uses 24 Sparkplugs, and a special bobbin.(needed replacing) Had to fix the ABC suspension. Did a donut, had to replace the steering pump... And then the the Mileage of that V12
Tbh E60 M5s are a good pick if you look for a bargain if the rod bearings have been done. Here in Europe you can find some with upgraded rod bearings that aren't prone to failure so fast for around 30-35k wich is a steal for what you get.
Have a non M BMW e46 that's already cost over $9000 to keep running in the first year of ownership. But at almost 300k miles it's to be expected. I'm honestly more surprised the engine hasn't blown up or the gearbox hasn't disintegrated, but everything else around those 2 just like to give up on life. The only reason I really hold onto this thing is personal attachment not wanting to give up the car I've literally grown up in.
I had a 2003 320i E46 and sorted all the standard E46 problems. Did the work myself and the parts bill, including new tyres, was £1600. Then it was stolen..
I loved the humor you added to your video! I have noticed on the car auctions that German cars are not very popular after the warranty runs out. Anyone who has owned a Porsche, Audi, or Mercedes knows what a "Check Engine" light costs!
Stype, love your content and humour, it's always great quality, Ian is good, good job Ian 👍 More videos is good but I'd rather have less and them be narrated by the author, its just more authentic. Cheers Ian Cheers Stype 👍
Also add anything made by Hyundai/Kia. Basic stuff is cheap, but if there is a failure of a part, that rarely breaks, you´re in for a very expensive repair...
The Ford Edsel was the beginning of the end for my grandfather. But it wasn't so much the repairs to the car that caused him so many problems. He invested heavily in the production of the car and he ended up blowing the entire family fortune on this venture. Also, in a position of significant responsibility he borrowed heavily against the assets of the nation which employed him to manage their funds and their economy. This was just so that he could further fund development and the redesign initiatives relating to that goddamned car. Consequently he ended up bankrupting the Republic of Nauru (Pleasant Island), and that's why it is in the state of ruin it is in today.
Hey stype, i always a fan. hope you doing good. Ian have your vibe, but i think he needs to chill a bit and have his own style. Great content as always tho
Thanks for this video, friend. I am a 27 year old guy and my dad has been teaching me how to drive (I currently live in a rural province in Canada and I need to learn how drive to get by) so this list is absolutely essential for me. Also, I have gotten pretty good. I can now control my speed, lane merge, understand most of the signs and rules, and even drive on the highway. I will be taking my road test in August.
Main thing is don't go for the luxury brands or anything really sporty, You will get a lot better vehicle for your money that way. exciting and cheap don't go together, at least when buying a car.
My 2009 Kia Borrego V8 is super reliable! I am so glad I acquired because most of the vehicles mentioned in this video I heavily considered getting off of used car lots/sites for really cheap. Thanks for the vid TC!! :)
Anyone who has ever watched Hoovies Garage or Tovarich will know exactly why you don't buy used luxury cars and supercars. Most of them didn't work right straight out the factory and were only for looking at or driving once a week. They're made in such small numbers and driven so few miles they never get the kinks worked out and don't build a new model with fixes.
Out of all these cars, I would go Lexus IS 300 or the LS 430 with a normal regular V6 or a V8. I don’t need no 12 extra cylinders even with a turbo or a spinning Dorito even though they’re soo impressive!! And Land Rovers are for sure capable… for staying at the mechanic store, while the Lexus LX (or Toyota Land Cruiser) is enjoying its off road wilderness and getting you going back and fourth all year long!! Also.. even though everyone calls it the spinning Dorito, it also breaks like a Dorito as well!! Now im soo hungry for Doritos!! 😋:)
I used to work booking appointments for a nissan dealership... Then this guy with a second hand GS lexus called and said that lexus is just so much better than that "infiniti piece of crap" (he had a q50 before) couldn't agree more with him.
2009 skoda superb... mtf "had a good service history", didn't even drive 10tkm and had dsg box changed, motor seals all renewed, locks renewed, window mechanic, seat heater thermostat, what else.. oo yes fuel injection, water pump, then i sold it with problems with trunk electronics, chain belt started becoming loose, and again gear box mtf started glitching again, ect......sold it. bought a 950€ corolla from year 2000, driven 35tkm and put 550€ on maintenance so far! Never german shit cars again, or french... staying with japanese basic models
😅😂... great ! seriously funny and real video.... I'm sharing it with my .die hard friends... who think drive 🚗 spaceships 🎉... and keep quiet the "total cost " to keep them mostly in the garage.. 😅
Right, so I did want to provide a constructive criticism. I do not think that Ian has no talent, but I do not think that this is the way to focus on the channel either. I have read your reasoning on why Ian is there, but my opinion: Hire people that can make your work easier without removing the Stype touch. The humour is not only limited to the sentences and punch lines, as there are other factors that play key roles too. The tone and enthusiasm is also key when focusing on humour and Stype is simply amazing at that. It feels human, funny and really natural. Ian however, he seems like that one guy who goes to stand up comedies and try to beat the master of the SUP comedy show in that place, but tries too hard. Also the final "Cut" felt really unnatural. I am sorry Ian, but I think that Stype is the one that is here to stay. That said, cool voice for a subchannel, TopCars TV plus (idea?)
**TopCars TV upload new video** Me: "Finally, long time no see Styp-" Ian: *"Like you...."* Also me: *"Wait....This is not Stype's voice..... Who are you?"* Ian: *"Hi guys, New Guy Ian here's covering for Stype"* Also me again: *"Ian who?"* He's good tho, but it feels a bit weird not to hear Stype’s voice making jokes about cars
I'll be honest, I have seriously looked at the Phaeton and the M5, the Mazda RX8 and the Maserati have also crossed my mind too when I've been looking at 2nd hand cars.
Hi Stype, Fan from India. Ian's great. But I am more used to your voice on this channel. Great job Ian. Keep it up..... But I still think Stype should do a video in his voice as well.
Hey Amit, I will be doing the videos too. Ian and the others will step in while I'm too busy doing my thing. We all want videos to come out more often, right?
2:35 - 'The more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain' - Scotty, Star Trek III. I use this advice when buying washing machines.
Whew...good thing I live in Europe and parts for BMWs etc cost nest to nothing. My 1997 Audi A4 cost me 850 bucks. Done 2 repairs to it. Both together cost me 300 bucks 🤣 And, if any big problems arise, Germany is just a 4-day drive away for replacement parts. Now...American muscle cars? Ooohhh now THOSE are expensive over here.
@5:13 Yes, but that doesn't make it particularly special or reliable, unless you love the V10 sound. There are multiple reasons why people may or may not inflate prices of old vehicles.
The maintenance of that car maybe 3-4 price of car LOL, should be change with aftermarket parts or parts that make car more durable but so hard to find it 😢. The Scariest thing is the engine Will go broken after Drive for a few miles.
they are great to drive too!. i drive them onto ships for export as a part time job and i may only drive them from car parks, across the dock and onto ships but they ae so good to drive .Nice places to sit, nicely trimmed but best leased and not bought .cracking vehicles though
There's nothing more expensive than a cheap German car. Especially here in Australia, where anything European gets the price hiked for its perceived 'better quality'. And that myth of German quality is utter bollocks; in terms of quality and reliability, they aren't a patch on the Japanese or Koreans.
13 YEARS NOW. A 328i 2010 E92 with, you got it the N51 engine, M Sport Package. Hydraulic steering, suspension is one of the kings here. The car is still doing very well after 178,000 miles.. like any car the regular maintenance. Parts are very good in (their) price. "But here's the kicker", You can afford this BMW or any other, if only when you do all the work yourself. Thank goodness we are big enthusiasts and technicians. All cars.. But most of all The Ultimate Driving Machine, yup, BMW. We will drive nothing else.."Sorry" for those who don't know, but because of this habit we love this car. The rest have very big imaginations about this car, that truthfully are completely wrong. Until you really understand this car or any BMW your ownership for sure will impress you. This model that is a Stright Six,(no turbo) with extra beef. But all motors, no matter the size or package is a dream to drive. You don't need a race car on the street. But we track this car as well...! Good luck to all BMW Lovers like ourselves.
I remember my father worked for Mazda when they had the RX2. It was a good running car, but are they slacking on the rotary engines????? I remember they used to be better than that!
I’m short: no. The rotary has become far more reliable and fuel efficient to keep up with new regulations and standards, and with correct care it’s possible to take a rotary to over 100000 miles without any mishaps. However, they are still ludicrously fuel inefficient, which is why Mazda stopped developing them after the rx8.
The E60 M5 is not bad once you replace the bearings with Mahle ones and use 5W-40 oil instead. Also get the manual version instead of the SMG so you don't have to worry about the pump.
@@miloskilibarda3993 about as easy as you would expect going from an automatic to a manual. i think dounut media did a great tutorial on how to convert to manual, i used that.
This is truly funny - found myself laughing several times. Usually an automotive channel's idea of humor is about as lame as it gets, so this was quite the refreshing exception. Well done!
This is an excellent video, and hilarious. I'm so glad I watched this before I went out to buy any of my dream cars, like the Aston, Maser, BMr, or anything else I can't afford. So... I guess my PiTy Cruiser will have to do, for now.
I had the V8 2003 Mercedes SL55 AMG for 14 years, sold it five years ago, same body as the 600 but more reliable. I had some suspension repairs which is common to this series, and an oil leak repair at the transmission, apart from that and with expert regular service including the retractable top it was a gem. It was always under cover and used regularly. A good friend has a 2002 CL550 AMG coupe, same suspension problem which was fixed by the same guy who did mine, his also has been reliable with some minor repairs over the years including the pneumatic door lock pump. Timeless classic styling, the two door AMG coupe is even better looking in my opinion than the AMG SL. He still has his and it looks as good as the day it left the showroom. Beautiful classics to own, AMG has better quality interior than the standard Mercedes badge and with loving care are a wonderful car to own, they are becoming rare nowadays and seldom seen on the roads. That's my experience, expert regular service is a must with these models.
A good rule of thumb: if a new luxury car is unaffordable, an old luxury car will be unaffordable. The low purchase price will simply be the downpayment for the costly repairs.
3:29 Ugly BMW? That's a redundant phrase. I saw one the last night, it looked like somebody had photocopied their butt and pasted the print on the clay model, and the production guys didn't recognize the joke!
I would be an evil rich person. I’d buy a 20 year old Bentley Continental and do a Toyota Land Cruiser engine swap, and tell all the kids that Bentley is super reliable 😂
If you know what you are getting into, cheap rx8+ls swap would result in a resilient car relatively easy to maintain. If you are cheaper/boring, I would imagine various I4 engines from Mazda and Ford, from 2.0L (shared chasis w/NC miata, etc) to 2.3/2.5 would be relatively painless swaps.
I recently bought an 84 Thunderbird. 5.0. Power everything, car runs great. 17,500 km. $18,500 CAD. This thing is brand new. I love it. 1 recall in 38 years for a seat belt bolt. I WIN.
No, you don't win. Get ready for your car to suddenly stop working WHILE you're driving it. Out of the blue, the engine will come done to idle, and slowly crawl to a stop, while you furiously smash on the gas pedal and pray for your life. This is what happened to me. You've been warned.

@@TopCarsTV ok phew! Thanks for telling me! I’m glad your fine. I understand why you didn’t post.

I wasn't sure when I first heard the new voice, but I got hooked in no time.
Good job Ian!
Side note: I think he fits as a Sonic voice actor haha
New dark era would be nice with this guy 😎
This guy's hilarious. The editor is hella apt. I typically have issues with list videos when it comes to cars cuz it's easy to produce but information can be mismatched. Love this tho
This is proof that stypes voice is the reason we come to the channel
But good job ian
yeah but quite frankly, I can't complain, didn't lose much of that 'feeling' you get when watching a Topcarstv video... way better than had it been a boring voice actor, which is what I was worried about, but Ian actually did quite good
I’m no shop tech but I’m pretty knowledgeable. I’ve always liked the idea of buying a non running RX8 and rebuilding it.
You had me at "Chinesium" 😂😂😂😂🤣💀Subscribed!
Never clicked faster than this 🤣
Edit: Wait a minute, who’s this guy Ian?
Still a good 1st day in the job imo 👍🏽
Ian did an amazing job. Your voice has built a sense of irony into itself over time but I'm surprised how well Ian did. 👏🏻👏🏻
You're talking about the series 2 right
Sadly a luxury car from 20 years ago will still cost luxury prices to fix😂
Not always, try a Lexus or Toyota Crown.
In the end.. Scotty Kilmer always wins
This guy's humour makes the whole thing interesting 😂😂
Rx8 original owner 130k miles. Replaced plugs wires and coills, water pump and belts, several cabin oil and intake filters, brakes and rotors. Overflow bottle, both door locks, aircontrol solenoids, clutch pedal, emissions fan. Total repair and maintenance about £4,000. Did most of the work myself. I have to keep the car and sell my much newer bmw n20 motor car due to the reliability. Bmw has lost oil cooler gasket and timing covers gaskets. Timing chains likely to fail soon. Rx8 has been more reasonable to fix.
Will Stype be back Ian? Would love to see both of you in the videos. Good job on your first video Ian.
I will be back. You'll be hearing both in future videos. This won't be a one-time occurrence
@@TopCarsTV I still remembered you hired someone else before, Why did he leave?
It didn't work out
wait he did? In which video?
@@elzierr1743 he didn't, but he will in the future. My apologies, I've expressed myself wrongly :)
Better buy alfa gt 3.2 busso
Had the 156 2.4jtd for 18 years no problems engine perfect. In the end underneath rusted out
If it wasn't raced, it's a good car.
Lol. One of the funniest and most informative clip on TH-cam . Subscribed.
My friend had a nice SL600.
He went nearly bankrupt on it.
Car has Engine Management System, meaning it uses 24 Sparkplugs, and a special bobbin.(needed replacing)
Had to fix the ABC suspension.
Did a donut, had to replace the steering pump...
And then the the Mileage of that V12
My advice is to pretty much stay away from anything having a fucking V12.
That intro can never be more relatable than ever.
Tbh E60 M5s are a good pick if you look for a bargain if the rod bearings have been done. Here in Europe you can find some with upgraded rod bearings that aren't prone to failure so fast for around 30-35k wich is a steal for what you get.
Also preventive replacement isnt that expensive, since you dont have to take the engine out. Around 3000€ and you are good.
That list couldn’t be complete without the Range Rover, even given for free I will not take it, Nope!
Damn, thank you for sharing, I have been looking at e46 listings recently and they look extremelly tempting
I had a 2003 320i E46 and sorted all the standard E46 problems. Did the work myself and the parts bill, including new tyres, was £1600. Then it was stolen..
Little known fact you can take the entire drivetrain of the Rx8 and transfer it to an Mx5. Including the front suspension!
...... and fuck THAT car up too!
Let me guess the three honorable mentions:
1. Late 90s - Early 00s Jaguar XJ
2. Alfa Romeo 166
3. 1992 Porsche 928 GTS
First one is a Jaguar S-Type.
And unjustified except for the 3.0 automatic
about the quattroporte:
the ZF one,is better, with a traditional torque converter
I loved the humor you added to your video! I have noticed on the car auctions that German cars are not very popular after the warranty runs out. Anyone who has owned a Porsche, Audi, or Mercedes knows what a "Check Engine" light costs!
Ian sounds nice. Would love to hear both of you in coming videos. And he got the number saying part well done

You can engine-swap like I4 to Mazda and you can engine-swap stronger engines to other cars and even change transmission
That Amber joke though! 😂😂😂
Also add anything made by Hyundai/Kia. Basic stuff is cheap, but if there is a failure of a part, that rarely breaks, you´re in for a very expensive repair...

New guy did a great job covering for Stype
The v 10 in the E 60 is about as closely related to the F1 engine as I am to Noah.
Also, if it's the sound of a V10 you love, a straight 5 is pretty damn close and gorgeous sounding. Somewhat more simple, too!
Depending on your religious pieties, you might be or definitely are a direct descendent.
@@JustJay1281 Seriously, thanks for this advice, friend.
My 2009 Kia Borrego V8 is super reliable! I am so glad I acquired because most of the vehicles mentioned in this video I heavily considered getting off of used car lots/sites for really cheap. Thanks for the vid TC!! :)
Notice how almost all of these are European cars? This is the reason these European luxury cars depreciate so fast.
I can feel the “What?” when that guy found out how much to keep it running.

Good points. Thanks. I'll forward them to Ian and we will work on improvements

4-day? In Europe? You got to be joking
4 day is not close man
@5:13 Yes, but that doesn't make it particularly special or reliable, unless you love the V10 sound.
Man i wish jaguars and land rovers were reliable they look amazing
they are great to drive too!. i drive them onto ships for export as a part time job and i may only drive them from car parks, across the dock and onto ships but they ae so good to drive .Nice places to sit, nicely trimmed but best leased and not bought .cracking vehicles though
Its called ENGINE SWAP. :) If you aren't ruled by ACTAUL Fascists/Communists..
There's nothing more expensive than a cheap German car. Especially here in Australia, where anything European gets the price hiked for its perceived 'better quality'. And that myth of German quality is utter bollocks; in terms of quality and reliability, they aren't a patch on the Japanese or Koreans.
Btw I liked Ian very well, he’s very good. He was good enough to get me to subscribe! Cheers!

Also get the manual version instead of the SMG so you don't have to worry about the pump.
i got a 2007 quattroporte a few years back, put six speed manual from a challenger r/t in it, and it's never had a problem. fucker's my daily.
Manual quattroporte, that's sick. How difficult was it to put the challenger gearbox in it?

It's a new guy
3:29 Ugly BMW? That's a redundant phrase.
I saw one the last night, it looked like somebody had photocopied their butt and pasted the print on the clay model, and the production guys didn't recognize the joke!
the Rx-8 have a simple fix, swap it, or maybe you have time and money so it's completely up to you
I would be an evil rich person.
84 thunderbirds were soooooo UGLY!!!!
