- Pearl Jam performs Masters Of War live on the late show with David Letterman. Eddie Vedder and company give a chilling rendition of the Bob Dylan Classic.
Lyrics:
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
Eddie is, in my opinion, one of the most passionate singers of our time.
2023 he still is.
You can say all you want about what this song means, or you can argue about war and politics, but I know we can all agree that this is one of the most powerful and passionate songs ever written.
Is it just me or is there something chilling about this rendition, especially when Eddie sings, "Is your money that GOOD". I also dig how eddie adds "white mansions" refering to The White House maybe? Dylan's original with all the extra verses stands the test of time and is friggin amazingď
His voice is so perfect
Amazing that this was written in the 60s and it's still just as relavant today as it was back then. Shows the genius of Dylan.
It's really scary how relevant this song is.
For sure.
Eddie Vedder is an inspiration for any music lover, musician or not.
This is why PJ is one of the most important bands around. Legendary.
It took balls for Pearl Jam to cover this song on TV. They have the best and most heartfelt version of it. Thanks.
good to see dylans classics kept alive by young brilliant bands..
They are "STILL" a great band?! They are greater than ever!
Which comment?
I saw him life twice and he's even more amazing. I get shudders. his voice is the most beautiful and simple. Love them all.
Another cover where Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam show their musicianship and taste. They're keepers.
You see the moment of silence after the song's last cord? And how still everyone was when Dave approached, all claps and smiles?
Powerful song, casts a powerful spell. Everyone was listening.
Bob Dylan ROCKS! Eddie does an insanely amazing version of this BD song! Sends chills down my spine!
this is my personal favourite live version of any PJ song
Maybe the best lyrics ever written. Even more relevant now then when it was written. Dylan is a genius.
First time hearing this version if the song. Pearl Jam's rendition was powerful 👏
this song never fails to send a chill down my spine.
damn. one of the coldest, coolest songs i've ever heard.
it's ironic and it's tragic that it's still so very relevant.
he's a living legend for me. I once read a comment about him, that said: Everything he does is state of art...
I agree ;)
One of the best covers I've ever heard.
I love Pearl Jams version of this song. My two favorite artists in the world: Dylan and Pearl Jam
One of the many reasons i've loved this guy ever since it's beacuse he sang out with this uncanny earthly flavor - something a couple of notches above from out of the plain technique - of song-writers such as Mr Bob Dylan..!
Thanks for sharing! AWESOME!
Man he kills this!!! Just murders it!!! What a great song!!!
Eddie Vedder sings this song with so much passion. Ironically Dylan wrote this before Eddie Vedder was born. This is my second favorite version (behind Dylan).
One of the best songs I've ever heard. I have goosebumps. Eddie Vedder is a legend!
classic in every way.. hope other bands will cover these great lyrics in the future and keep that song alive
damn Dylan is truly a poet.
pearl jam is amazing, one of the most beautiful bands ever.
@stratmad bob dylans 30th ann. concert.. its amazing - couldn't agree more - thats the moment eddie vedder became a name that PARENTS of pearl jam fans all of a sudden wanted to hear more from - thats certainly how it was at my house !
A powerful and magical song...
great performance!
this is completely amazing
god bless Pearl Jamrica! I love you Eddie and your Band!
Cool video, thx for spreading the word
excellent! greets from Chile
amazing voice. inspiring to any vocalist surely.
Pearl Jam-Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Powerful song!
It shows how little progress we have made
Love the "is your money that good"-part!
Solid Performance!!!
Very powerful! Great band, will go down in history as one of the greats. They will rank with Zep, Pink Floyd, The Who, the Stones and Beatles.
Thanks for this. That was awesome.
Thanks for posting lyrics too!
in the past 50 years, we reached the billionth milestone four times. A lot changed
Don't know what I was thinking...with genius like this we should all be just fine...
They came out of the music revelation in the early 90's, survived the top 40, and now play their music for just those who really appreciate it. Out of the MTV crowd is exactly where they should be.
Real people playin real music is magical
uma das melhores bandas de rock dos últimos tempos.
that was awesome
awesome band !!!!!!! such passion
bring back the great bands like Alice and the Jam true music with heart and soul
...
He does. He had him play it at the 30th anniv. at MSG...another great version.
They still rock. Vedder sounds better then ever.
Eddie always sounds good live
This song will always be relevant.
i think about that when i listen to this song today.
Great song!
Dylan was such an amazing song writer, this song is incredibly deep, and was written during the vietnam era, in particular i believe this was meant for richard nixon in particular, but my god eddies voice is made for this song
Now THAT is how you cover Dylan.
@mespasticpunk amen..... one of the few who recognize......
Revolution is near! Spread the word!
It`s a song by Bob Dylan called Masters Of War, which Vedder played on the 30th anniversary for Dylan
kickass performance
awesome!
Best version of Eddie doing this one on the
Net
Beautiful cover. Honestly don't know the original, but the lyrics alone are a testament to Dylan.
amazing version.... and yes very little has changed since the song was written.
@ChristopherSEAY123 Agreed! I still remember the first time I heard that song, got chills to the spine. It is a very true song.
well said!
right on!
only must quote-brilliance---You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
@bdylanfan90
so true. you always feel their deep respect for the originals.
Cracking version and Im sure Bobby D would love it.
Powerful performance to say the least.
INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE BY EVERYONE!! " MASTER OF WAR" HAVE YOU WITNESSED THE BOB DYLAN ANNIVERSARY SHOW IN 1993? WHERE EDDIE AND MIKE FREAKIN MCCREADY AND E.G SMITH PERFORMING "MASTER OF WAR" IT'S INCREDIBLE!! I LOVE EVERYTHING PEARL JAM!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AWESOME VIDEO. RIP FOR THE HEROS IN 9/11 🇺🇲 AND THE HEROS THAT SURVIVED. 😊🩷🤘✌️
Esta se la canto a muchos poderosos.
Eddie the Vedderman on letterman how cool
that was intense
Lefty, don't beat them up....too much. This says something that we all, who have been, understand. We know what happens up there, and we do what we need to down below...Regardless, my father, who was probably the biggest Bob Dylan fan, and me, who is probably the biggest Pearl Jam fan, we will talk on the horizon......
melrich2,
According to the lyrics listed in the video description, Eddie sings it as follows:
Verse 1 :28 - :59
Verse 2 1:00 - 1:31
1st half Verse 3 1:33 - 1:48
2nd half Verse 4 1:51 - 2:04
Verse 7 2:11 - 2:43
Verse 6 2:49 - 3:22
Verse 8 3:39 - 4:12
He unfortunately didn't include Verse 5 in this version.
Hope this helps.
that was so well said!
i agree 100% man

Pearl Jam His Kingdom Come
Totally agree! :)
Pearl Jam is the shit and they are speaking out on behalf of the few American's that stand proud and truly realize what politician's and war is really about
Ed's solo project was indeed a project for a movie. Pearl Jam is touring Europe this August. Any further questions?
The version at the Dylan tribute was better, but this is still awesome.
Great post!
\m/
simply awesome..
"And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’Til I’m sure that you’re dead"...
all the kids will eat it up, if it's packaged properly. so good kurt
Bob Dylan's a genious. In my opinion.
... yes...
give these guys a medal.. restores a bit of faith about free speech since 01.
@pridden76 The Vote for Change tour was in September 2004, so around that time.
Love this song and PJ's version. Hate War. Hate that our boys die and their families hurt.
OMG no...I absolutely love EV with short hair!!!
the performance from the Dylan tribute concert is even better.
+tubewatcher38 i like the music from this one better, they added a cool beat, and eddies voice was still very good here, he could hit the high notes, not sure if he can now, but you're right, the one with just him and mcready and the snl guy was absolutely ridiculously good in terms of vocals.
+shane armendinger This one has the same intensity, but Eddie's voice doesn't sound great to me here.
