My experience with Rode support has been nothing short of outstanding. We have sent NTG microphones back for repair, fully expecting a repair bill, and they've either repaired with no cost or straight up just sent us a new mic, no questions asked - both times with a 2-week turnaround (though we are in Australia and not overseas). They are just brilliant. I'll buy from Rode before anyone else simply because their support is amazing.
Its covered under warranty. Sadly this is a common issue with alot of headphones not just Rodes. Some companies actually design it in intentionally as planned obsolescence.
Your impressions of this headphone match mine exactly. Thanks for another great review. And I totally agree with you that Rode is really onto something with the design and build quality of the NTH-100. I had them for a couple days and it didn't take long for me to realize that since I already have and enjoy AKG's K371, I don't really need these as well. It's a pity that the K371 isn't built nearly as well as these or that the NTH-100 doesn't sound nearly as good as the AKGs. If someone takes the best of both worlds and combines them in a new closed-back, they've got an instant hit!
In my opinion you are pretty much spot on with your review, particularly concerning sound quality. They don’t sound bad being the Rode’s having nothing really wrong, nor anything really right (except for comfort). Certainly they can’t hold a candle in any respect to my home speakers, but I need an isolation headphone for location recording that I can stand wearing for more than 15 minutes. So I’m keeping my pair. The Rode NTH-100 is the epitome of pleasant inoffensiveness. They win by default.
Dude you won’t believe this but I found one of these at an Amazon liquidation store for $8. The right side was cracked a little, but I fixed it and now I’m rocking. They are great headphones
Really nice tip on the felt removal, love the sound with them now quite a bit more. I mostly bought them out of curiosity and love a lot of the interesting stuff they did with the build. It's solidified me on the need for Alcantara padding on everything. Need more headphones aside from Meze and now Rode doing it.
I received my generic inner foams similar to sennheiser hd6xx/600/650 inner foams and it calmed the shout just enough to make it sound refined without being muffled like the stock thick felt. I got this idea right away because the naked driver without any damping reminded me of the extra shout the senns get when removing the front foam. All in all a success. Sound and build combined, This is my favorite closed headphone in this pricerange now.
I have them, the bass boom is what most caught me but I put it down to closed back vs 6xx. They are fantastically built though, and will be trying the foam mod. Don't forget the price.
And you ,don't forget the 6xx are build by one of the bests headphone companies in the world. They are also open-back (so much better than close) The price how ever, I buy a pair of these Rode for 180 Euro and a real Sennheiser (more than 40 Years around ) HD 600 for 250! Euro So that is a " No Brainer" .Or buy a pair of Byerdynamics DT 990 Editions for 160 Euro ,they beat these on every level !! Regards Kenneth John The Netherlands
Maybe the voicing is deliberate.. Mixing using the NTH-100s help me work the mid and the top because of its voicing, so that when I compare to my Grado SR225e's mixes it sounds so much more defined and balanced. Even the Grado's agree : )
I've had this headphone since it came out and it took me till now (Aug 2023) to remove the foam pads. I like it so much better. They might be less bassy, but at least they don't sound veiled. Especially when switching between Hifiman HE-400se.
would be interested to hear sound impressions for just speech/dialogue in addition to music, as much of their use case will no doubt be for film mixing.
Thank you for that felt mod!! I ripped mine out watching this and am now way happier with these!! Im going to try and find some thinner felt, maybe try various ones and see how that goes. I know the DCA headphones come with some, maybe I can get thoes and cut to fit. I hope that an aftermarket like Dekoni makes a slightly larger ear pad as that seems to be everyone's complaint
Anyone try toilet paper yet? Look what you got me doing jeeze. I dont have a measurement rig but to me it was slightly hot with no felt, now it seems less hot with single layer of TP lol tp
Knowing Dekoni, the pad would probably be thicker and have less room for your ears. I've found that the aftermarket pads offering a larger opening always produce a poor FR.
@@TheHEADPHONEShow Very cool to hear from you! I have been liking a single layer of 2 ply toilet paper cut to size in place of the thick felt. I dont have a rig to measure with but I'm sure curious what it would be. It seems to have take away the sibilance or hotness that was there without docking clarity. Again not a golden ear like you but I too noticed the veil when I got them and dont feel like its there now. I wonder if there is any mod that could turn the sub bass up just a touch. For the money these are terrific cans! Maybe when they make version 2 they will get it just right!
They are tolerable on their own, but when you wear some headphones with no audible issues with highs/upper mids and more controlled bass after NTH-100, you can catch yourself thinking: "damn, what the hell I was even listening before? 🥴"
People are disiing this headphone atm, not sure why. I have a pair and they are amazing for the price. They are an involving and detailed listen with great bass and great mids. I have 20 headphones, iems and ear buds and some are over 3 times more expensive than these but it is the Rode that I prefer listening to. All in all they are amazing value and make music sound great.
There’s so many mixed reviews of this headphone. Just decided to buy it and see what happens. If it wasn’t for the look and build, I would have gone for the akg k371.
I actually ordered some third party hd600/6xx inner foam linings to cut it down to nth100 size to put it in there. It will be much thinner than this insanely thick felt here
*update, my set cracked in the adjustment mechanism as well after 5 mo of only sitting on my head or the headphone hook. can't recommend due to this. Mine doesn't sound quite as dead in the air regions as the graphs suggest, I don't know if it's unit variation or just my ears. It also is not as boomy as something like an hd 599, and since it's a gradual clockwise tilt in the mids and not a contoured midbass hump I wouldn't say it's bass dominated at all. In terms of technical performance I find it matches at least the k361 and bests it in imaging, although that's not really a high bar. For my ears the harman over-ear target is way too sharp in the mid treble so the nth100 is more to my preference. It's also free of the treble peaks that other closed backs have at this price point.
I have no idea what you mean, I think the observation on the kitty ears adding extra sound stage was spot on, although I have found the addition of gold tinsel does improve the imaging and positioning
Do you used the aeon for mixing or just listening. I’m interested to know if you can used them for mix and mastering. Well at least to get something decent and then finish mix on monitors
Hello, quick question. I was just wondering, what headphones would you recommend up to the $150 mark for general use such as gaming, content creation and music? Thanks and keep up the great videos!
What would you recommend for someone who can't buy the K371? The AKGs simply will not seal on my head, and this seems to be a somewhat common shortcoming for this model. What do you think is the runner-up to that headphone?
Great review on this headset, I was thinking on buying this set but I think I'll look for something different. I am looking to replace my old Audio Technica ath m50 which I bought 8 years ago and absolutely love the sound signature but they hurt my ears after 20 minutes or so. I bought the famous Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 30 ohm and I will be returning such set since the midrange is low although they sound good but not for me since I love clear and clean tones and accurate bass and treble. What would you recommend for $200 dollars? I already own Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee but I'm looking for a closed back headset. Thank you Mr H
I got the K361 for a steal and as a longterm M50X user I can confirm it’s vastly more comfortable and as good or in some cases better sounding, but not built as well in a nerveracking way. A friend had the Rodes and we both are more taken with them than Andrew, but the sound isn’t as much better than the AKGs as price and aesthetic would suggest. They do look indestructible though and I’d like that peace of mind. For editing while fighting off thugs they would be top 1, though M50X, the iron man red edition no less, have served well in combat.
I've already got the open-backed DT 900 Pro X for mixing/mastering, but I'm looking for something closed-back & cheaper like the AKG K371 for monitoring vocals as i speak/sing, and also sound samples/field recordings with my Tascam recorder. So I don't need the _best_ quality headphones for that stuff, but I'd still like them to be as neutral as possible. For those purposes, would you go with this Rode, AKG K371 or DT 770?
@@itayoron - I ended up getting the AKG K371. Turns out that a lot of people have had the Rode snap in one particular spot, after only a month or two of light use. That scared me off.
Some people have been complaining about it snapping on them after 2 months of light usage. It's hard to know how systemic of an issue, but there was a TH-cam video and several comments of people having the very same vulnerability. th-cam.com/video/Ba3bX7taXXI/w-d-xo.html Almost all the reviews came out right around launch so this one might be right for a follow up.
Wondering why there is such divide on the sound attenuation on these - some say it isolates really well while others say it doesn't isolate that well (esp. when compared with the k371).
As Resolve says, it's about how it's coupled to the side of the head. The RODE didn't isolate that well for me personally, but I also have quite a small head, so clamp was likely lessened as a result.
How has yours held up? I need a good mic and use it more for zoom calls and voice than music and some videos on TH-cam. I need rhe comfort which is why i liked this one. Thougts?
I can't compare it to the rode NTH 100 but I have the DT770 80ohms and they are honestly the best headphones I have used. Not a sound guy at all so can't talk any of this other technical stuff haha
I think the DT770 Pro (especially the 80 ohms) is simply the best sounding and most comfortable headphone under 500 dollars! I even owned DT 700 X and DT 1770 but the DT 770 Pro still sounded the best to my ears and was the lightest and most comfortable of all. It sounds very detailed, layered and I just love the separation between all the instruments. You can not find this quality in this price range. It is also great for gaming or move watching and sound more open than most of the open back headphones.
What headphone can I get open back style if possible for 50 usd that will sound good, I game a lot and I would prefer comfort and ok sound, bass does not matter, clarity and mids more. Thanks in advance.
If eq is an option, Superlux HD-668B are quite all right. They have a rather nasty peak around 5.5 kHz which needs taming down or else they sound quite sibilant, but still rather clear. Without EQ I second the Koss KSC75 as a fantastically option in this price range.
Great review. Love the Freq. response comparison between Stock and w/o Felt. Very interesting. Do you think they did that to highlight voices for Podcasters? They claim they are monitor headphones therefore they should be accurate for music too. I’ve had mine for four days and I find they’re pretty accurate. I’m comparing them to my Senhauser HD 58X jubilees, (volume matched) but must confess at almost 70 years old my ears hurt as good as they used to be; Although recently tested as normal hearing and I can still hear about 15 kHz.
@@keithlancaster5489 Sorry to hear that Keith. I too played in bands in my 20s, drums in several bands. This was before Metal and we we never had enough money for big amplifiers, LOL
are the parts on the head frame plastic? is the head steel part held in by the plastic or is it all one part and the head pillow secured by the black parts?
Do you think there are unit variation, my pair dosent sound as you describe, saying that I'm also not sure I like their tonal quality, maybe it's the foam insert isn't being produced to a constant spec, thinking on sending these back, is the akg 361/371 (build excluded) a better entry cost critical listening headphone without EQ do you think, or anyone else please feel free to answer if you have heard all 3. I am after a closed back entry level neutral headphone to compliment my other couple of closed backs which are colored and I love them for it
hey i have a question and i hope i can bring it across right with my english. I have the dca aeon noire 2 and i love them, but i would like to switch to iems, because they are mor comfort and so but i also own the fiio fh5 and they just cant compare sound wise to the aeon noire 2. now my question is, are the campfire andromeda sound wise much beter then the fiio fh5 so that they can compet with the aeon noire 2?
what do you recommend for a closed back version of the 1997 version of the sennheiser hd 600 with the same sound signature and same tuning? I have the sennheiser hd 600 the 1997 Ireland version. The closed back headphones that I have are the sony mdr 7506, audio technica m40x, m50, sennheiser hd 280 pro romania version . I daily drive my hd 600 and for iems use the fiio fa1. Alot of majority of my headphones are also open back like the sennheiser hd 598 brown and beige color, hifi man he 4xx, audio technica ath 900x, grado sr 80e, sennheiser game one. I used the mic on the sennheiser game one when talking on my phone when being plugged into the headphone jack lol.
How do they fair to the Focal listen pro? I’m currently in the market for a work from home headphones. The thing is I’m still not decided on what kind of headphones. Since i sit and stare at my computer screen for 10-12 hours a day I need something light and comfortable, good breathability would be a huge bonus. So that kind of shift us to open back design, HOWEVER working from home and living in an apartment I have to deal with some noises. Like a drilling neighbour or a barking dog or neighbour kids ogolony around. I currently own the B&O H6 2nd gen. Which i bought a few years ago to be my travel/ on the go set. But then mu original Fidelio x1 died. So I’ve been using it with some EQ and BOOM 3D dsp and eq on my MacBook Pro. They sound great, they look great, are light and comfy. However my ears are getting swetty and hot eventually. As the sheepskin leather albeit very soft is not super breathable. Fidelio’s were giving me neck pains as I often lean over the desk to sketch something ( I’m an illustrator and a concept artist ). So ideally I’m looking for an improvement in comfort ( breathabilty / less hot during long sessions ) I did get Devialet Gemini as an ANC earbud as well as B&O EQ. But I seriously cannot last more than 2-3 hours in those , but I use them ( mainly Devialet for their awesome ANC when that is needed) I was considering Focal Bathys as an end game all in one solution, but since I have an ANC setup not sure that’s a good idea. Especially since the bterry will die eventually. So all that being said, am I destined to go with a Classic like HD600/650 ( I’m from Europe, No drop stuff for me ). Or would you guys suggest something else. I could Afford Focal Utopia but I don’t believe that going over certain bracket is worth it. I’d like to stay under 1000 the cheaper the better. As being reasonable and responsible adult I have other Man toys to get as well ….😅 I listen mostly to Classic rock, bossa nova, chilly asian Lo Fi while working. Imagine Dire strata for example. But I’d like them to be an all roumder if possible
Oh and the headphones to look good would be a huge bonus. I’m a sucker for good designs being an artist an all ;) P.S No beyerynamic suggestions please, not my rade sonically nie design wise. Focal Elegia/ Elear or those rode or meze designs speak to me.
Hi there. I have my guitar plugged into an amp and now I need a headset to plug in so that I can practice silently. What headset do you recommend? Thank you
They sound so informative, revealing and the soundstage is immense. I have 20 headphones including buds, iems, Sennheiser, AKG, M4U, Grado and Sony and these are the most involving and enjoyably musical that I own. Your review makes no sense whatsoever. It's just you..
Great review! Now I'm shure it's not my cup of tea in terms of sound. I kinda liked K371, but wasn't super impressed - for me bass wasn't as good controlled, as I would like and there was something annoying in mids. I might try Shure SRH840A in near future, but for now I'll stay with Focal Listen Wireless, as they are pretty damn good closed back cans. If you like headphones focused on sub bass rather than mid bass and with very good low end control, you should try Focal.
I used to hate these cans for their weird frequency response and sound reproduction, but it turns out they can be EQ'ed with Sonarworks Reference to sound like a great pair of neutral cans with good resolution, natural mids, clear highs and fast (yet not very detailed) bass. Yet they're mediocre at best out of the box.
Shure 840a, best music audiophile closed back under 500. Your stable needs another opinion because they are a blend of V shape and pro analytics.. edit: perfect blend
I bought my NTH100 and they broke in 3 days since I bought them...I'm a bit confused ...I agree they have really good sound, but I wouldn't say it's well built. I reseached and noticed that the clips keep breaking, there are lots of complains about it ...Built quality is what it s lacking. I l iked your video, but I dont agree. I dont think the built quality is outstanding at all
Definitely was shocked listening to these and compared to the M40x & M50x, it sounded quite lo-fi. Those aren’t extraordinary headphones either by any means. Mud-fi really
Is the mod easily reversible? Anyone? I was willing to try, but wanted to know if it's possible/ easy to put the original foam back in place. I have some different density foams here and wanted to play with them to see how it turned out. But always with the possibility to return to the og.
I bought the NTH-100 and immediately returned them. These are amp dependent. They sound oK with my Topping A50s amp. But they sounded distorted with my class A Keces E40 amp, like they couldn't keep up with the signal. That amp drives my Sundara headphones perfectly.
It's kind of a deep subject, and if you're interested we cover it in this video here: th-cam.com/video/LrIoNMeo_GI/w-d-xo.html But in general, it all comes down to individual head-related transfer functions (HRTF), and the measurement rig has one as well.
Warranty not honoured. Broke after 1 month.... terrible design. Fixed chip lock with piece of plastic cutting board. An nut bolt. Wouldn't recommend at all
A note about durability - there are reports of the headbands cracking within a year. Hopefully this is something Rode can address.

@@itayoron - I ended up getting the AKG K371. Turns out that a lot of people have had the Rode snap in one particular spot, after only a month or two of light use. That scared me off.
Kph40i
Some people have been complaining about it snapping on them after 2 months of light usage. It's hard to know how systemic of an issue, but there was a TH-cam video and several comments of people having the very same vulnerability.
th-cam.com/video/Ba3bX7taXXI/w-d-xo.html
Almost all the reviews came out right around launch so this one might be right for a follow up.
Yeah more people should be mentioning this.
Wondering why there is such divide on the sound attenuation on these - some say it isolates really well while others say it doesn't isolate that well (esp. when compared with the k371).
Coupling
As Resolve says, it's about how it's coupled to the side of the head. The RODE didn't isolate that well for me personally, but I also have quite a small head, so clamp was likely lessened as a result.
@@listener-reviews ah ok, so i guess it wouldn't isolate all that well for me either then
1000th like of mine :)
How has yours held up? I need a good mic and use it more for zoom calls and voice than music and some videos on TH-cam. I need rhe comfort which is why i liked this one. Thougts?
Thanks for this. I think I have my next purchase narrowed down between the K371 and the DT770, I need that clarity/detail that the R0de is lacking.
I can't compare it to the rode NTH 100 but I have the DT770 80ohms and they are honestly the best headphones I have used. Not a sound guy at all so can't talk any of this other technical stuff haha
@@Philmyster I bought the DT770 32 ohms and absolutely love them!
Hey Mates, How is the comfort level , pressure, heat, headband press? I got the Rode, and it just feels pressing from top down.
What headphone can I get open back style if possible for 50 usd that will sound good,
I game a lot and I would prefer comfort and ok sound, bass does not matter, clarity and mids more.
Thanks in advance.
Portapros maybe?
Koss KSC75, if you want more clarity/mids
If eq is an option, Superlux HD-668B are quite all right. They have a rather nasty peak around 5.5 kHz which needs taming down or else they sound quite sibilant, but still rather clear. Without EQ I second the Koss KSC75 as a fantastically option in this price range.
Superluxe 668b with cosmo pads

What's the best headphone for monitoring/tracking low hypnotic voice then and comfortable also?
Great review. Love the Freq. response comparison between Stock and w/o Felt. Very interesting. Do you think they did that to highlight voices for Podcasters? They claim they are monitor headphones therefore they should be accurate for music too. I’ve had mine for four days and I find they’re pretty accurate. I’m comparing them to my Senhauser HD 58X jubilees, (volume matched) but must confess at almost 70 years old my ears hurt as good as they used to be; Although recently tested as normal hearing and I can still hear about 15 kHz.
I am jealous. At 65, I can only hear to about 8k. To many years playing in bands, and just developed tinnitus this last summer out to the blue.
@@keithlancaster5489 Sorry to hear that Keith. I too played in bands in my 20s, drums in several bands. This was before Metal and we we never had enough money for big amplifiers, LOL
After removing the felt can it be put back without glue or does it need to be glued?
I want these but I find everywhere they break after some months :/
I wanted sennheiser
But Røde warranty makes me feel more secure, price is a big deal too, it’s a good sacrifice
What microphone are you using in this video? Vocals sound fantastic.
Looks like the Electro-Voice RE20
another hyped youtube product
What about FOstex T50rp without an amp? Would this sound better than these with some Shure pads?
are the parts on the head frame plastic? is the head steel part held in by the plastic or is it all one part and the head pillow secured by the black parts?
I'd recommend the u6t these days around that price. But Andromeda is definitely still good.
@@TheHEADPHONEShow okay thanks for the answer but can they compete with over ear headphones like the dca aeon noire 2
Sen HD569 is an undereviewed cheapish closed back HP. Any chance of you reviewing it?
hi . Do you think 770 pro is better in terms of sound isolation than nth100 ?
so, what v-shaped closed-back headphone you think is best under 500 dolars?
what do you recommend for a closed back version of the 1997 version of the sennheiser hd 600 with the same sound signature and same tuning?
So ideally I’m looking for an improvement in comfort ( breathabilty / less hot during long sessions )
I did get Devialet Gemini as an ANC earbud as well as B&O EQ. But I seriously cannot last more than 2-3 hours in those , but I use them ( mainly Devialet for their awesome ANC when that is needed)
I was considering Focal Bathys as an end game all in one solution, but since I have an ANC setup not sure that’s a good idea.
As being reasonable and responsible adult I have other Man toys to get as well ….😅
I listen mostly to Classic rock, bossa nova, chilly asian Lo Fi while working. Imagine Dire strata for example. But I’d like them to be an all roumder if possible
Oh and the headphones to look good would be a huge bonus. I’m a sucker for good designs being an artist an all ;)
P.S No beyerynamic suggestions please, not my rade sonically nie design wise. Focal Elegia/ Elear or those rode or meze designs speak to me.
Hi there. I have my guitar plugged into an amp and now I need a headset to plug in so that I can practice silently. What headset do you recommend? Thank you
Is this pair of Headphones good for Music Production as compared to other brands?
Depend in the style of music, but truly the warmer mids would commonly disturb accuracy
They sound so informative, revealing and the soundstage is immense. I have 20 headphones including buds, iems, Sennheiser, AKG, M4U, Grado and Sony and these are the most involving and enjoyably musical that I own. Your review makes no sense whatsoever. It's just you..
1:54 how ''small'' are pads openings, measures please?
I'm sorry, how do I get the sound to be in stereo?
Funny, "flat black for headphones and just about everything else." Nice review.
Am I reading the scale right and the departure from the target is about 3 dB on average?
If you're curious why strict target adherence isn't important, check out the video we did on the 10 stages of reading headphone measurements.
Im no pro so i got 2 pair.Thank You
this or m50x?
K371
Shure 840a, best music audiophile closed back under 500. Your stable needs another opinion because they are a blend of V shape and pro analytics.. edit: perfect blend
I bought my NTH100 and they broke in 3 days since I bought them...I'm a bit confused ...I agree they have really good sound, but I wouldn't say it's well built. I reseached and noticed that the clips keep breaking, there are lots of complains about it ...Built quality is what it s lacking. I l iked your video, but I dont agree. I dont think the built quality is outstanding at all
Rode is offering a lifetime warranty on them. You should send them in and get a new pair.
It's not reversible
@@TheHEADPHONEShow thank you!
What about cup quality
They break on the band lock after a while
Does this guy actually listen with his ears or simple present a graph and justify what he sees?
I bought the NTH-100 and immediately returned them. These are amp dependent. They sound oK with my Topping A50s amp. But they sounded distorted with my class A Keces E40 amp, like they couldn't keep up with the signal. That amp drives my Sundara headphones perfectly.
Okay..New Audio term "Shakira" 😂
Though it looks and feels like a tank, the Rode is done in a few months.
They have a lifetime warranty.
It's definitely a moddable headphone rode messed up by having such a dense filter imo did you measure thd after removing the filters as well?
Question if a peak is at 11khz how can you hear it at 9khz ? and no I'm not being a smart ass.
It's kind of a deep subject, and if you're interested we cover it in this video here: th-cam.com/video/LrIoNMeo_GI/w-d-xo.html
But in general, it all comes down to individual head-related transfer functions (HRTF), and the measurement rig has one as well.
Wow I took out that 4mm of bloody stupid felt and now these are detailed as fuk. Slight drop in bass compensated by 3db eq tweak no biggie.
It is a “muffled mess” did one listen and said nope. No top end. Wish I could return it
Does the sony cd900st even compete with these?
I wonder
good luck trying to find replace ear cushion...everything else works but not just can't find replacement cushion,,, you are screwed.
great. this just saved me from GAS! hahahaha thanks!!
How do you think this comparing to AKG K371?
Great headphones, but flawed design. Do not buy. the locking mechanism breaks even with gentle use.
There seems to be a pretty big unit to unit variance between sets, quite unfortunate.
Warranty not honoured. Broke after 1 month.... terrible design. Fixed chip lock with piece of plastic cutting board. An nut bolt. Wouldn't recommend at all
Not sure why the K371 is some kind of standard. They sound like shit. The Rodes have some modding leeway.
Real neutrality is borderline impossible to get for 150 dollaroos, I figured that one.
